• Wessty: Live with HTML 5 (2011 Speaker Tour)

  That’s right: Wessty is on tour. Okay, the banner and the tour is a little over the top, but I am really excited about my upcoming speaking engagements to spread the word about HTML 5! I have already kicked off the tour with the Winnipeg Code Camp last weekend with the world premiere of HTML 5 for .NET Pro presentation, and the turn out fantastic. It was the last presentation of the day, but we still had some great questions about the new standard and got to see how HTML 5 can fit into .NET web applications today. In any case, above you can see the confirmed presentations that I will be doing so far in 2011, but there are a few more events that I have heard about that I hope to add to that list. Ultimately, expect that list to be updated over the course of the year as the year is young and there are plenty of conferences coming up! Presentation Resources As the tour continues, I will be posting the slides and the source code for the demonstrations up here on my site. They will be free of charge and give you the chance to review the demos and hopefully take advantage of some of the cool things you see in the presentations. • PASS Summit 2011 &ndash; Part I

  What an amazing week I had at PASS Summit 2011 in Seattle, WA!  I hadn’t attended a PASS conference since September of 2005 when it was in Grapevine, Texas.  It has grown so much since then.  I am not sure how many people attended back then, but I’d guesstimate about 1500.  They announced that at this year’s conference there were 4000 attendees.  WOW! Here are my favorite aspects of this conference: Networking! – Not only did I meet a lot of new people, but I also got to meet people in person that I’ve known on the Internet for years like Mladen Prajdic (blog|twitter) and Rob Volk (blog|twitter).  I even met someone that I’d recently helped out in the SQLTeam forums.  Learning – I took a lot of notes during the sessions I attended and plan on blogging very soon about them.  It is amazing the amount of things you learn and the things that you unlearn.  Yes I said unlearn.  Some of the stuff that I thought I knew was either out-dated or just plain wrong.  Fun, fun, fun – To say that this conference was fun would be an understatement.  I had a blast!  I attended the “Welcome Reception and Quizbowl” on Tuesday night, the “Exhibitor Reception” on Wednesday night, and the “Community Appreciation Party” at GameWorks on Thursday night.  There were many other after-hours events to attend, but I had to make my kids a priority at night so I had to get back to my hotel room before 9pm so that I could Skype with them.   It was very entertaining reading and posting with #sqlpass on Twitter.  Twitter has changed the conference experience for the better.  I will definitely be able to do my job better due to attending this conference.  The return on investment is HUGE!

• Let Devoxx 2011 begin!

  Devoxx 2011 is kicking off today and Oracle will be well represented for all its Java efforts. Here's a quick rundown of the Java EE and GlassFish side of things. Cameron Purdy, now responsible for the entire Oracle middleware stack (WebLogic, GlassFish, TopLink, Coherence) will host the Java EE keynote, mostly focused on Java EE 7. There will be sessions on individual JSRs by spec leads : Nigel Deakin for JMS 2.0, Marek Potociar for JAX-RS 2.0, and Greg Luck (EHCache) for JSR107 / javax.cache. Oracle's Shaun Smith will also cover JPA 2.1 with some of the unique EclipseLink features such as multi-tenancy. BOFs on Java EE.next and CDI are also planned during the week. Finally, Arun Gupta will be delivering a complete Java EE 6 hands-on lab. There will also be GlassFish-related sessions. A first one will focus on the current state of the community and product (3.1.x) with customers production stories, while GlassFish architect Jerome Dochez will walk you through the enhancements the team is working on for Java EE 7 and GlassFish 4 - virtualization, PaaS, elasticity and more. Last but not least, our good friends from Serli will discuss their latest GlassFish contributions on Application versioning and high-availability rolling upgrades.

• 2011 Tech Goal Review

  A year ago I wrote a post listing my professional goals for 2011.  I thought I would review them and see how I did. Release an Android app to the marketplace – Didn’t do it.  In fact, haven’t really touched Android much since I wrote that.  I still have some ideas but am not sure if I will get around to it. Contribute free software to the community – I did do this.  I have been collaborating with others via github more lately. Regularly attend a user group meetings outside of Java – Did not do this.  Family life being what it is makes this not that much of a priority right now. Obtain the Oracle Certified Web Developer Certification – Did not do this.  This is not much of a priority to me any more. Learn scala – I am about 50/50 on this one.  I read a few scala books but did not write an actual application. Write an app using JSF – Did not do this.  Still interested. Present at a user group meeting – I did a Maven presentation at the Java user group. Use git more, and more effectively – Definitely did this.  Using it on a daily basis now. Overall, I got about halfway on my goals.  It’s not too bad since I did do a few things that weren’t on my list. Learned to develop applications using GWT and deploy them to Google App Engine Converted one of my sites from PHP to Ruby / Sinatra (learning to use it in the process) Studied up on the HTML 5 features and did a lot of Javascript development

  Hi All, I have the this bit of code in a VBA class which is to workout the number of days between a property of the class (a date) and today’s date. Dim EmailDate As Date EmailDate = Me.Email.DateReceived Debug.Print EmailDate, Date Debug.Print NetworkDays(EmailDate), Date, Range("BankHolidays")) When I run it I get the following output 23/04/2010 19/05/2010 [GetMacroRegId] 'NETWORKDAYS' < [GetMacroRegId] 'NETWORKDAYS' -> '699990072' > Error 2015 I have tested it in a module, using dummy data, and get the correct answer. Can anyone see why this would be giving an error in a class? I have referenced atpvbaen.xls. Edit: I have found that when I run the code through a menu option I have created on the menu bar it fails, but when I run it via a button or through the VB Editor it works fine.   How can you make the .xla file if you want to create your own xla? I have the code, classes, shapes, etc....what is the process to making an xla file to point to? I know that I have to put it in my program files folder, and then go through the steps to adding an "add-in" in xls...but i mean actually saving an xla file to point to.... can i simply write all this in xls and then save it as file type xla?? because i have tried to do that but I get an error that it is not a valid add in when I am in a spreadsheet trying to point to it? thanks!
