  • Can I use CAT 6a connectors with 7a cable (and get 6a performance)?

    I'm re-wiring a building and want to get the best cable possible laid - it required re-plastering to make a change to the cables and the cables will be there for the next 10 - 20 years. Currently there appears to be cat 7a cable available but not too much in the way of cat 7a connectors. Also - I won't be using 40Gig hardware in the near future. So, my question: is it possible to use cat 6a connectors / patch panels with cat 7a cable and get the same performance as I would had I used cat 6a cable? Are there any gotchas in trying to do this?

  • Cloning single disk drive to multiple drives simultaneously

    I am looking for a way to clone single disk drive to more than one disk drive at the same time. I have prepared system images on 1TB disks, and it takes almost 2 hours to clone one disk to another, and then it goes up exponentially, in order to have say 30 disks cloned. If it was possible to clone one disk to more than single target, it would simplify whole procedure a lot. Also, is there something that prevents this kind of operation? I mean, is there some special reason why every disk cloning software that I know about supports only single target drive? Thanks!

  • What hardware would I need (approx) to run ESXi server?

    Hi, I am considering to purchase off-the-shelf commodity hardware in order to build server that will host virtual machines using ESXi server. Intended purpose for this server is NOT mission critical tasks. It will have to run perhaps 20-50 Windows XP/Vista/7 virtual machines (in total, but closer to 20 figure). Each guest would have to have 1-2 GB of ram, and probably two-three times more disk space than guest OS needs with clean install and all updates applied (that would be around 6-8 GB for XP, and i believe closer to 10-15 for win7). Those guests will act as a test ground for a new product that is network management software, thus guests will idle most of their time once initially loaded, but if I give them some task to complete, they should be able to perform reasonably well. Now, from what I have learned... CPU is usually not much of an issue (6 cores would do it), memory should not be lacking, but doesn't have to be sum of all guests, because of overcommitment... That leads me to IO, which is, as it seems, the bottleneck. Since I have very little experience with ESXi (and ESX, too) server, I'd like to ask: How much memory could I save by overcommitment, and how does it affect performance? Is 6-core cpu enough to run above described system? Would it be possible to run entire server off two (or even one) SSD drives (to host system virtual disks, with few additional HDDs (2-3) in RAID 0 to be used as secondary storage? I read somewhere that ESXi allows having something like "master image", essentially virtual machine that is "deployed" many times, so that disk space can be saved by having only differences stored by specific guests, instead of copying around whole virtual disks. Is this true, and how can this help me? Are there any other things I need to take into consideration when building this off-the-shelf solution? I should probably mention here that I'm fully aware of issues like SPOF regarding power supply, raid 0, etc, but since it's only a testing ground and not a production system, it's not so important for me.   • Can't install newer NVIDIA display driver on Windows 7

    I'm using Windows 7, and the latest version of NVIDIA display driver I can install on my computer is 275.33 (or 266.58, I can't decide now, see below). When installing newer version of the driver (e.g. 275.50 and 280.26), the installer always fails at "Installing NVIDIA Control Panel", then Windows 7 reverts to 275.33 (the newest stock version?). I tried to find installation logs but couldn't find it. I tried to completely delete (in fact I renamed) c:\progra~1\nvidia~1 folder but still couldn't install. How to resolve this problem? Any help is appreciated.

  • Upgrade manually-installed msi by assigning software through gpo

    In the past I rolled out software by manually installing it on a "golden" workstation, creating an (ghost)image from that and rolling that out to the other workstations. I try not to do that any more for simple/small software, and when possible (if it's an .msi) I assign the software through gpo. I'm having a problem with one of those. The software was manually installed on the image, which was rolled out, and now I have an update for that software (new msi) and I'd like to assign it through gpo. Don't know if it's relevant but it's user assigned. The new version gets installed alongside with the old version (this is possible since the program folder is different between those versions). When I install the same msi by hand, it properly removes/upgrades the old version though. Is what I am trying to do possible?

  • What IRC client(s) would allow me to filter out log messages?

    I have been using Empathy and more recently Pidgin as my IRC client. But there is one feature missing from both of these clients that keeps bothering me. I want to be able to see only what people are actually talking about in each channel. I often like to leave IRC channels open and go back to them and read the messages for the last few hours or days. I saw that IRC clients have been discussed in this post and a few others, but I have not found what I am looking for yet. Here is what I want to see in my IRC client: what actual people say Here is what I do not want to see message about people entering the room people leaving room people changing their status messages or what they are known as people sneezing people's cats sneezing Anyway, you get the picture. What IRC clients are available for Ubuntu that would allow me to configure what I see so that I can see what people are talking about -- and nothing else?

    Possible Duplicate: How to copy and move mysql database Dump all databases with SSH access I'm setting up a new dev machine, and I have the old one sitting right next to me. I'd like to do an exact copy of all MySQL structures and data from the old machine to the new. Nothing fancy needs to happen (it's a dev machine). No replication. I don't care about "downtimes" etc. Is there a super simple way to do this? For example, I have SSH on the old server, can I just use Nautilus, do a connect to server, and then transfer a folder over, replacing another folder with it and be done? It's the same version of MySQL on both sides. Same version of Ubuntu. Same in most respects.

  • Connecting 2 PCs using USB-to-USB (male-male) cable

Is there any Ubuntu equivalent to this? I would really love to SSH into my Ubuntu server via my Ubuntu laptop, just by connecting one end of the male USB to my laptop, and another end of the male USB to my server. I know I can always SSH into my server via the network, but then in this case of mine, there are cases the server is inside a secluded-secured network server room, and the only way for me to check things out is to go into the server room and open the keyboard console and monitor there. But, if I can just bring my laptop inside and connect to the USB there, then that would be cool. Any idea guys?

    This is not a homework question, but rather my intention to know if this is what it takes to learn programming. I keep loggin into TopCoder not to actually participate but to get the basic understand of how the problems are solved. But to my knowledge I don't understand what the problem is and how to translate the problem into an algorithm that can solve it. Just now I happen to look at ACM ICPC 2010 World Finals which is being held in china. The teams were given problem sets and one of them is this: Given at most 100 points on a plan with distinct x-coordinates, find the shortest cycle that passes through each point exactly once, goes from the leftmost point always to the right until it reaches the rightmost point, then goes always to the left until it gets back to the leftmost point. Additionally, two points are given such that the the path from left to right contains the first point, and the path from right to left contains the second point. This seems to be a very simple DP: after processing the last k points, and with the first path ending in point a and the second path ending in point b, what is the smallest total length to achieve that? This is O(n^2) states, transitions in O(n). We deal with the two special points by forcing the first path to contain the first one, and the second path contain the second one. Now I have no idea what I am supposed to solve after reading the problem set. and there's an other one from google code jam: Problem In a big, square room there are two point light sources: one is red and the other is green. There are also n circular pillars. Light travels in straight lines and is absorbed by walls and pillars. The pillars therefore cast shadows: they do not let light through. There are places in the room where no light reaches (black), where only one of the two light sources reaches (red or green), and places where both lights reach (yellow). Compute the total area of each of the four colors in the room. Do not include the area of the pillars. Input * One line containing the number of test cases, T. Each test case contains, in order: * One line containing the coordinates x, y of the red light source. * One line containing the coordinates x, y of the green light source. * One line containing the number of pillars n. * n lines describing the pillars. Each contains 3 numbers x, y, r. The pillar is a disk with the center (x, y) and radius r. The room is the square described by 0 = x, y = 100.     Hi Guys, My code appears to crash. I'm trying to setup a SensorManager for getting the Orientation of the device. I also have a listener that should update when conditions change.     The newer versions of ColdFusion (I believe CF 8 and 9) allow you to create structs with object literal notation similar to JSON. My question is, are there specific benefits (execution efficiency maybe) to using object literal notation over individual assignments for data that is essentially static? For example: With individual assignments you would do something like this: var user = {}; user.Fname = "MyFirstnam"; user.Lname = "MyLastName"; user.titles = []; ArrayAppend(user.titles,'Mr'); ArrayAppend(user.titles,'Dr.'); Whereas with object literals you would do something like. var user = {Fname = "MyFirstnam", Lname = "MyLastName", titles = ['Mr','Dr']}; Now this limited example is admittedly simple, but if titles was an array of structures (Say an array of addresses), the literal notation becomes awkward to work with.

    What is a good way to prevent a table with 2 columns, a and b, from having any record where column b is equal to any value in column a? This would be used for a table of corrections like this, MR -> Mr Prf. -> Prof. MRs -> Mrs I can see how it could be done with a trigger and a subquery assuming no concurrent activity but a more declarative approach would be preferable. This is an example of what should be prevented, Wing Commdr. -> Wing Cdr. Wing Cdr. -> Wing Commander Ideally the solution would work with concurrent inserts and updates.

    I seek a solution to the age-old problem of managing string resources. My current implementation seems to work well, but it depends on using singletons, and I know how often singletons can be maligned. The resource manager class has a singleton instance that handles lookups in the ResourceBundle, and you use it like so: MessageResources mr = MessageResources.getMessageResources(); // returns singleton instance ... JLabel helloLabel = new JLabel(mr.getString("label.hello")); Is this an appropriate use of a singleton? Is there some better, more universally used approach that I'm not aware of? I understand that this is probably a bit subjective, but any feedback I can get would be appreciated. I'd rather find out early on that I'm doing it wrong than later on in the process. Thanks!

So I'd like to get the array in this sort of shape: Array ( [12] => stdClass Object ( [type] => photo [created] => 2010-05-14 23:36:41 [user] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 760 [username] => mrsmith ) [photos] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 4181 ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 4180 ) ) ) ) preserving the first item of the group and it's created time, and supplementing it with any other groupable photos and then unsetting any items that were grouped (so the final array doesn't have key 44 anymore as it was grouped in with 12). The array contains other actions than just photos, hence the original keys of 12 and 44. I just can't figure out a way to do this efficiently. I used to use MySQL and PHP to do this but am trying to just use pure PHP for caching reasons. Can anyone shed any insights? I thought about going through each item and seeing if I can group it with the previous one in the array but the previous one might not necessarily be relevant or even a photo. I've got total brain freeze :(

    Testing out someone elses code (of course it was ...) , I noticed a few JSP pages printing funky non-ascii characters. Taking a dip into the source I found this tidbit. // remove any periods from first name e.g. Mr. John --> Mr John firstName = firstName.trim().replace('.','\0'); Does replacing a character in a String with a null character even work in Java? I know that '\0' will terminate a c-string. Would this be the culprit to the funky characters? Thanks PR

I was able to do it like this: SELECT title, year, MovieGenres(m.mid) genres, MovieDirectors(m.mid) directors, MovieWriters(m.mid) writers, synopsis, poster_url, AVG(rating) average, COUNT(rating) count FROM movies m INNER JOIN movie_ratings mr ON m.mid = mr.mid WHERE m.mid = 1 GROUP BY title, year, MovieGenres(m.mid), MovieDirectors(m.mid), MovieWriters(m.mid), synopsis, poster_url; But I don't really like that "huge" GROUP BY, is there a simpler way to do it?

  • Is it possible to play multiple audio streams from one "jukebox" to multiple Airport Express devices?

    I have set up a Mac mini as a jukebox that streams audio to an Airport Express in another room in the house, using the AirPlay/AirTunes feature in iTunes. I control this with the iOS Remote app, and this works great. At the present time, it looks like the Mac mini's copy of iTunes gets taken over by the Remote app, while streaming. If I set up a second Airport Express in room B, is there a way to set it up (as well as the jukebox) so that it can receive and play its own unique music stream ("stream B"), separate from what's going on at the Mac mini, or in room A, which is playing stream A? To accomplish this, I would be happy to buy a copy of Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil if it will allow sending multiple, separate audio streams from one computer to the multiple wireless bridges, while using the Remote app (or a Rogue Amoeba equivalent for iOS). However, it is unclear to me from their site documentation, whether that is possible or not. I'd prefer to give the points to an answer that solves this problem. If you don't know if it can be done, or do not think it can be done, please allow others to answer. I appreciate your help. Thanks for your advice.

  • Can I make two wireless routers communicate using the wireless?

    I want to make a setup like this: cable modem <-cable- wireless router 1 <-wireless- wireless router 2 in another room <-cables- PCs in another room Basically, I want to extend my network access across the house and then have a bunch of network jacks available for my office PCs. Right now, I have a cable modem going to a wireless router in one room and a PC with a wireless PCI card in it in the office on the other side of the house. I use internet connection sharing with the other PCs in the office. The problem is that ICS is flaky, especially when I switch to VPN on the Windows box to access files at work. I picked up a wireless USB adapter that I thought I could share among the PCs I work on but I'm not very happy with it so I'm going to return it (NDISwrapper support for it is poor). Is this possible? My wireless experience so far has been pretty straightforward so I have no idea what kind of hardware is available. I've looked at network extenders but those just look like repeaters for signal strength. I want wired network jacks in my office.

  • Can any iSCSI NAS appliance replicate / clone a LUN to an external drive?

    I would like to backup using Windows Imaging to some kind of NAS appliance. I believe this will require the NAS to support iSCSI. I would then like the appliance to support the replication of the iSCSI LUN to an external eSATA or USB disk connected directly to the appliance. I've found plenty of NAS appliances that can do iSCSI and replicate to an external drive, but none that I've found thus far can do both at once. That is, the devices can do iSCSI, but then the replication feature doesn't work. The idea here is to backup to an appliance located in a secure office far away from the server room. Offsite backups to external hard drive could be managed from the appliance. The benefits of such a setup would be: 1) very unlikely that fire or random theft would affect both server-room backup and "remote" backup appliance 2) offsite backups could be managed by multiple trusted people without granting access to server room 3) Windows imaging provides poor man's deduplication, so each backup volume can contain a decent backup history. I understand why this would be a non-trivial thing to implement, but I'm wondering if such a thing exists? Preferably a tabletop, low to medium cost device. Alternative solutions welcome. NOTE: I'm backing up very few but very large files, so file replication is not a good option.

  • What does a DHCP-client consider to be the "best" answer?

    We have training rooms where normally Windows XP is installed (via PXE). The "normal" DNS/DHCP infrastructure are Windows-Servers. The training room has its own VLAN (different from the Windows servers), so there is most propably an IP helper for DHCP requests active on the Cisco router where all PCs from that room are connected to. Now we wanted to convert some of the PCs to Linux instead. The idea was: Put our own Laptop with a DHCP server into the VLAN of the room and override the "normal" DHCP response. The idea was that this should work, since a directly attached DHCP server in that VLAN should have a faster response-time than the "normal" DHCP server located some hops away from that VLAN. It turned out that this did not work. We had to manually release the lease on the original DHCP server to get it working. On the Laptop we did see the client requesting the IP and "our" dhcp was sending NACKs to the Windows IP request, before that we did offer our own response. Old Question: Why did this not work out as expected? What is making the PC regain its old lease? Update 2012-08-08: The regain-issue has been explained in the DHCP-RFC. Now this explains why the PC regains its old lease. Now we do release the IP from the Windows-DHCP-server before giving it another try. Again - the Windows-DHCP-server wins. I suspect that there is some algorithm for the dhcp-client which determines the "best" dhcp-answer for the client. The new question is: How does the client choose the "best" answer?

  • Dell R320 RAID 10 with CacheCade

    I'm looking for a higher-performance build for our 1RU Dell R320 servers, in terms of IOPS. Right now I'm fairly settled on: 4 x 600 GB 3.5" 15K RPM SAS RAID 1+0 array This should give good performance, but if possible, I want to also add an SSD Cache into the mix, but I'm not sure if there's enough room? According to the tech-specs, there's only up to 4 total 3.5" drive bays available. Is there any way to fit at least a single SSD drive along-side the 4x3.5" drives? I was hoping there's a special spot to put the cache SSD drive (though from memory, I doubt there'd be room). Or am I right in thinking that the cache drives are simply drives plugged in "normally" just as any other drive, but are nominated as CacheCade drives in the PERC controller? Are there any options for having the 4x600GB RAID 10 array, and the SSD cache drive, too? Based on the tech-specs (with up to 8x2.5" drives), maybe I need to use 2.5" SAS drives, leaving another 4 bays spare, plenty of room for the SSD cache drive. Has anyone achieved this using 3.5" drives, somehow?
