  I found a tutorial with people saying it works; here are the instructions I followed. I opened a shell as root on my system and launched the following: wget http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz tar zxvf tip.tar.gz cd v4l... (whatever the newly created directory name is) make all sudo make install Then I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom and added blacklist sn9c102. After reboot, I launched sudo gstreamer-properties. However when I type tar zxvf tip.tar.gz it displays: tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' option Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information. Why? • Cannot connect to a Wifi network chipset AR9287

  After updating my newly installed ubuntu 10.10. I can't connect to the wifi network anymore although it is showing it. Tried to install manufacturer driver INF file via ndiswrapper only makes things worst - lost my wifi. Downloaded and installed the compat-wireless driver for the Atheros AR9287. After installing, i got my wifi connection again but after rebooting I can't reconnect again. The Wifi access point is showing 2/5 to 3/5 signal strength. Laptop: Acer Aspire 4741G Wifi Adapter: Atheros AR9287 OS: Ubuntu 10.10 64bit

• Battery Indicator Missing

  Duplicate of: No Battery Status Icon I have just recently upgraded from 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" to 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" on my laptop, but do not have any battery indicator (which should be located between the volume and date indicator in Unity). Done indicator-power is already the newest version. indicator-power set to manually installed. In addition, I have already tried reinstalling, but still don't have a battery indicator. What else can I do?

• Can I force window to open on top of other windows when opened by keyboard shortcut?

  I use SpaceFM as my primary file manager on Ubuntu. I typically open folder directly by keyboard shortcuts, so, e.g. Ctrl+Super+W opens my Work folder. Specifically, I use execute the command spacefm -w /home/rasmus/Work/ by the above shortcut, with the -w ensuring that SpaceFM opens a new window. However, this new window is not always open on top of the last active window on the workspace. This is rather annoying, as it means I sometimes have to "dig" for the newly opened window. So, my question is: Is there something additional I can add to the executed command that will ensure that the fresh window is opened on top? Alternative solutions to the same effect are welcome.

• How to use Btrfs with compression on external USB hard drive?

  I would like to make use of Btrfs' transparent compression on an external drive. Which tool is best for formatting the drive? Disk Utility or GParted? How do I activate the compression? During formatting or when I mount the drive? I guess at mount time. I'm using usbmount to automatically mount newly attached devices, because nobody is logged in on the desktop. Would I have to set general default options somewhere in a system configuration file to get Btrfs mounted with compression, or would I specify this via FS_MOUNTOPTIONS in /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf and how? • Cannot login other users since upgrade

  I had 10.10 with 4 users and upgraded to 12.04.1 from CD. (in the installation options it detected I had 10.10 and windows installed and I chose the option to upgrade keeping users and their homes and all possible apps) Now the main user works fine but there where none of the other users, only their home directories, so I decided to create new users with the same names and seems to worked fine, there was no extra home directory created so I assume it linked the newly created user with the home directory of the same name, but I can't log in. It accepts the password goes black and takes me back to the login screen (lightDM) If I create a new user with a different name it works fine but then it creates it's own home directory.

• vdpau on Ubuntu 13.10 and mesa 9.2.1

  I've just installed Ubuntu 13.10. I have a Radeon HD 4570 card and I want to use the hardware acceleration capabilities that were introduced with linux 3.10 in the mesa 9.2 So my question is: since I have a linux 3.11 and mesa 9.2, do I really need to compile the mesa library with --enable-vdpau option enabled? I have installed the libvdpau from the repository but no acceleration. Should I compile and then install the latest mesa(I don't want to mess my newly installed Ubuntu 3.10)? Thanks!

• Coding style advice? [closed]

  I'm a newly grad. I've got a lot of complaints from my supervisor at work during code-review sessions with regard to my coding style (Surprise!). I don't know if it's just him being cranky or my style is really that annoying to read. I come from the low-level language world (assembly, mostly), so I've been taught to use bitwise ops and all the cool tricks to do math whenever possible. I also have the habits of doing some other things that've been regarded as "too excessively dense to read". So I'm hoping to get some feedback from any experienced programmers! :) Also how should I justify between code performance and readability? Thanks!!

• The Apple iPad &ndash; I&rsquo;m gonna get it!

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple.  Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan. Commands allready used apt-get clean apt-get remove snort sudo apt-get dist-upgrade dpkg - remove - force-remove-reinstreq snort and nothing.

• Xubuntu 14.04 will not boot after preseed installation

  I recently set up Xubuntu 14.04 installation using preseed, and ran into a couple of problems during boot time. At first, right after the installation completed during first boot the system complained about /tmp not being mounted and did not proceed any further. I was able to fix that problem by making an entry for /tmp in /etc/fstab like so: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs optional,nodev,nosuid 0 0 This worked for a while (and still does for workstations that are already running), but newly installed machines are broken. They do not complain like before, but take forever to boot (2h) and it seems the root partition is mounted read only and you cannot do anything useful with the system. Any ideas on what to do? You can find the presseed file here Thanks in advance Update: If I get it to boot once via some magic in rescue mode (like simply mounting the root partition read-write, then resume boot) it will work forever. While this is a workaround, it is no option to do this for every installation.

  In my last post I went for a warts n all approach to set up a web role on Azure. In this post I’ll describe how to add an SQL Azure database to the project. This will be described with an as minimal as possible amount of code and screen dumps. All questions are welcome in the comments area. Please don’t email since questions answered in the comments field is made available to other visitors. As an example we will add a comments section to the site we used in the previous post (Länk här). Steps: 1. Create a Comments entity and then use Scaffolding to set up controller and view, and add ConnectionString to web.config. 2. Create SQL Azure database in Management Portal and link the new database 3. Test it online!   1. Right click Models folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class Comment. 1.1 Replace the Code in the class with the following: using System.Data.Entity; namespace MvcWebRole1.Models { public class Comment {    public int CommentId { get; set; }    public string Name { get; set; }      public string Content { get; set; } } public class CommentsDb : DbContext { public DbSet<Comment> CommentEntries { get; set; } } } Now Entity Framework can create a database and a table named Comment. Build your project to assert there are no build errors.   1.2 Right click Controllers folder, choose add, choose “class…” . Name the Class CommentController and fill out the values as in the example below.     1.3 Click Add. Visual Studio now creates default View for CRUD operations and a Controller adhering to these and opens them. 1.3 Open Web.config and add the following connectionstring in <connectionStrings> node. <add name="CommentsDb” connectionString="data source=(LocalDB)\v11.0;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDbFileName=|DataDirectory|\CommentsDb.mdf;Initial Catalog=CommentsDb;MultipleActiveResultSets=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />   1.4 Save All and press F5 to start the application. 1.5 Go to http://127.0.0.1:81/Comments which will redirect you through CommentsController to the Index View which looks like this:     Click Create new. Now, go to the Management portal and Create a new db.   2.1 With the new database created. Click the DB icon in the left most menu. Then click the newly created database. Click DASHBOARD in the top menu. Finally click Connections strings in the right menu to get the connection string we need to add in our web.debug.config file.   2.2 Now, take a copy of the connection String earlier added to the web.config and paste in web.debug.conifg in the connectionstrings node. Replace everything within “ “ in the copied connectionstring with that you got from SQL Azure. You will have something like this:   2.3 Rebuild the application, right click the cloud project and choose “Package…” (if you haven’t set up publishing profile which we will do in our next blog post). Remember to choose the right config file, use debug for staging and release for production so your databases won’t collide. You should see something like this:   2.4 Go to Management Portal and click the Web Services menu, choose your service and click update in the bottom menu.   2.5 Link the newly created database to your application. Click the LINKED RESOURCES in the top menu and then click “Link” in the bottom menu. You should get something like this. 3. Alright then. Under the Dashboard you can find the link to your application. Click it to open it in a browser and then go to ~/Comments to try it out just the way we did locally. Success and end of this story!

• Installing software on an offline Ubuntu server

  Assuming that I have a server with Ubuntu server newly installed on it. I was thinking of installing the very same version on Virtual Box (Or any other virtualization software), connect it to the internet and use apt-get to only download the packages for upgrading the system and the new software such as (tomcat7, openjdk6-default-headless..etc). Then copy the downloaded packages from the archive folder to the offline server's archive folder through a USB stick. So now the virtual system won't actually be upgraded nor have any new software installed. But would running the very same apt-get commands on the offline system without the download directive -d be executed without issues ? *EDIT:*This needs to be as simple as possible because I'll have to write a guide for our client to do this on his own and so it won't be acceptable to require deep Linux knowledge to do this.

• Photoshop, slice, Dreamweaver, web?

  So I am playing around with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I have created a site layout, and have used the slice function on it. Next, I saved as html & images. In Dreamweaver, I open such html file and I fill the page with content, links, etc. I have a website and everything, and I would like to use my newly created html page on it. But, obviously, if I copy & paste the html to my website it won't work because it will lack the images. But two things: I can't find the images, and apparently they are a lot. I am sure I am doing a great mistake regarding the images. Can someone help me?

• Lenovo G580 Brightness Error caused by unsupported updates. How to revert?

  I just installed the 64-Bit version of Ubuntu 12.04 on my newly bought Lenovo G580. The brightness control was working properly using the Live CD and when I first started the installed version. Then I updated Ubuntu and restarted my laptop, and suddenly now, I can't change the brightness. I think its caused by some update. And then I went and checked my update settings, and saw that Unsupported Updates were enabled by default. So now I need to fix this brightness issue somehow. What should I do to locate the wrong update and remove it? I don't even mind removing all the updates right now. Thanks for the help. :)

• Victory rewards in digital CCG

  I am currently polishing a digital CCG where people can play against friend and random opponents in a classical Magic the Gathering-like duel CCG. I plan to award the players with 20 ingame currency units (lets call them gold) for each hour they are playing, 50 for each day they are playing and X for each victory. Now, the X is what I am trying to calculate here, since I would prefer keeping the currency to a certain value, but also with to entice the players to battle. I could go with a solid figure, say 25, for beating up an opponent. But that would result in experienced players only beating up newly started players, making the experience lame for both. I could also make a laddered tier, where you start at level 1, and raise in level as you defeat your opponents, where winning over a player awards you his level x 2 in gold. Which would you prefer if you were playing a game like this. There is no gold-based scoreboard, but the gold is used to purchase new cards along the way.

• Common mistakes made by new programmers without CS backgrounds [on hold]

  I've noticed that there seems to be a class of mistakes that new programmers without CS backgrounds tend to make, that programmers with CS backgrounds tend not to. I'm not talking about not understanding source control, or how to design large programs, or a whole host of other things that both freshly minted CS graduates and non-CS graduates tend to not understand, I'm talking about basic mistakes that having a CS background will prevent a programmer from making. One obvious and well trod example is that folks who don't have a basic understanding of formal languages will often try to parse arbitrary HTML or XML using regular expressions, and possibly summon Cthulu in the process. Another fairly common one that I've seen is using common data structures in suboptimal ways like using a vector and a search function as if it were a hash map. What sorts of other things along these lines would you look out for when on-boarding a batch of newly minted, non-CS programmers.
