• How to associate an icon with a shell script?

  Environment: Ubuntu 11.10 I have a Java application as a jar file. I have created a batch file that contains the following line: java -jar ~/MyApp.jar When I execute this batch file, the Java application works as expected. To create a desktop link, I copied this batch file into my "Desktop" folder. This results in an icon appearing on the desktop. However, the icon shows "Java" on it. I would like to associate a different icon to this desktop link. Would appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction.

  I joined Sun Microsystems in December of 1996, not quite 17 years ago. Over the course of those years, it has been my great pleasure and honor to work with a many talented folks, on a many incredible projects - first at Sun, and then at Oracle. In those nearly 17 years, we made quite a few platforms and products accessible - including Java, GNOME, Solaris, and Linux. We pioneered many of the accessibility techniques that are now used throughout the industry, including accessibility API techniques which first appeared in the Java and GNOME accessibility APIs; and screen access techniques like the API-based switch access of the GNOME Onscreen Keyboard. Our work was recognized as groundbreaking by many in the industry, both through awards for the innovations we had delivered (such as those we received from the American Foundation for the Blind), and awards of money to develop new innovations (the two European Commission accessibility grants we received). Our knowledge and expertise contributed to the first Section 508 accessibility standard, and provided significantly to the upcoming refresh of that standard, to the European Mandate 376 accessibility standard, and to a number of web accessibility standards. After 17 years of helping Sun and Oracle accomplish great things, it is time to start a new chapter... Today is my last day at Oracle. It is not, however, my last day in the field of accessibility. Next week I will begin working with another group of great people, and I am very much looking forward to the great things I will help contribute to in the future. • Ubuntu won't load properly all of a sudden

  This has been the second time this has happened, but when I booted this morning my hardware wasn't detected anymore. I see both screens pop up as normal, choose Ubuntu 14.04 in the grub list and from that point onwards none of the following hardware seems to be used: VGA, DVI-D, USB, Audio jacks. This has happened before, but at that time, I still had one screen left, so I could navigate through the (non-USB) keyboard and how weird this may sound, but from the moment I opened Windows in vmware, all of my hardware started working again. This was a few weeks ago, but the same seems to have happened again. This time I can't use that little hack though, since now Ubuntu stops using both screens. My hardware is all detected, Ubuntu just doesn't want to use it somehow. Did anybody else encounter this and how did they solve this?

• Why can't dash search find a program by its full name?

  For some applications, dash search comes up empty when searching by the application's full name. When typing the first couple of letters, it works. I wonder why... MuseScore is a fine example. When I search for "muse" in the dash search, MuseScore is found. When I search for "musescore", nothing is found. This behavior makes me distrustful of the dash search... I wonder how often it misses installed programs... I like to be able to trust the software tools I'm using.

• What is proper way to get specific version of package

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS I need to use curl package. But it comes in version 7.35.0 with known SSL bug (already fixed in next version) I either need lower version <= 7.33.0 or higher >= 7.36.0 to make it works, but how can I do it? Do I need to manually install curl? I checked synaptics, "Force Version" feature is greyed out. I also checked apt-cache showpkg curl, there is no other version available. I also tried to add "proposed" repositories, no new curl version either. What should I do? I am thinking about getting .deb package from previous ubuntu release...

It is titled "The Accessibility Act – ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and I will be part of a distinguished panel exploring some of the issues the upcoming European Accessibility Act may address - with a particular emphasis in my case on the role of ICT accessibility. This morning policy dialog will be followed by a more focused workshop in the afternoon looking at specific challenges and potential solutions to those challenges. • why does our network printer not show up on some of our macs, but does show up on others? [on hold]

  We lost power in our building and now cannot get our HP laser jet 5200 to be recognized by half of our computers. We are all Macs, some running OS 10.7.5 can see the printer, others running 10.7.5 cannot, and those running 10.8.5 and 10.9 cannot. We've re-booted the router, turned off and on printer and macs—no go. The printer displays an IP address (dynamically assigned) but we can't access it. Tried to see it using CUPS—same story, can see it on some systems, not on others. Any thoughts?

• How can I play 24Bit 96000Hz vinyl rips?

  I am getting music through the Nvidia HDMI but it is all down-sampled to 44000Hz. I have spent at least 3 hours searching for an answer yesterday. I use Pulse Volume and I even changed the default settings in the Pulse folder to 96000 but it does not work. Though 5.1 sound works perfectly. They all work well in Windows 7, but I prefer to use Ubuntu. All the config files for all the programs are in the etc folder, then look in the pulse folder, and there are 3 three files, 2 of these I changed the permissions and I changed 16 and 44000 to 24 and 96000 as I had read in another forum, but it worked for them and not for me. Though 5.1 works as I have special mp4 file that can check each channel. I did alot of restarts and checking after these changes as nothing had happened, my amp tells me the freq of the signal, which does work which I have tested on Windows 7. I have also gone to systems to download the latest driver for mu Nvidia card. But even if it does not work, I guess I can always play Cd's. But I think my player have become more unstable since I changed the configs, so I may uninstall and install Pulse Volume Control again.

• DOMDocument programming: a lot of little dilemmas, how to solve them?

  I need elegance and performance: how to decide by the "best implementation" for each DOM algorithm that I face. This simple "DOMNodeList grouper" illustrate many little dilemmas: use iterator_to_array or "populate an array", when not all items need to be copied. use clone operator, cloneNode method or import method? use parentNode::method() or documentElement::method? (see here) first removeChild or first replaceChild, no avoids "side effects"? ... My position, today, is only "do an arbitrary choice and follow it in all implementations" (like a "Convention over configuration" principle)... But, there are another considerations? About performance, there are some article showing benchmarks? PS: this is a generic DOM question, any language (PHP, Javascript, Python, etc.) have the problem.

• Keyboard Shortcuts no longer working on Ubuntu 12.04 with GNOME 3.4.1 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the keyboard shortcut to minimise a window to launcher in unity? I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 (with Gnome 3.2 I think), to Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.1, and my custom shortcuts have stopped working. Opening up the All Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts, I can see that my shortcuts are still there. All of the shortcuts that I didn't change are working, and my shortcuts in the custom section are working (eg Ctrl+Alt+G to open gedit), its just that the shortcuts I had customised before the upgrade no longer work. Under Launchers, I had changed "Launch Terminal" to Ctrl+Alt+T, and under Navigation I had changed move to workspace above/below to Shift+Ctrl+Up/Down. Investigating further, it looks like the default shortcuts for these actions work (Ctrl+Alt+Up/ Down moves me up and down workpaces), so I'm guessing that there is some discrepancy between what I am seeing on the Keyboard Settings and what my computer is reading from. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to clean launch a GUI app via the Terminal (so it doesn't wait for termination)?

  Some GUI apps launch cleanly via the Terminal command line. Some don't, and they cause the Terminal to wait for the app to terminate. ...and even then, some don't "release" the command line. The mysterious ampersand "&" suffix, seems to cause the terminal to put the process into the background... (but I'm not sure what happens there). Is there a way to launch an app via the Terminal, so that there is no "hang on" effect? ... just like launching something via F2. I'd like to have the command line available again, immediately (without something still in the background and writing out system message in the terminal).

• Ubuntu Crashes @ Login Screen

  So, I've been having troubles with the newest Windows Installer for Ubuntu Desktop(http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer). When I start up up the operating system, i enter the login screen of Ubuntu. Everything is fine at that moment except my mouse and keyboard are frozen. Next I hear a "bongo" noise which is obviously the system looping and getting ready to crash. Soon enough, I enter a purple screen with white diagonal short lines in the background. I am then forced to unplug my desktop. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

• Usb/vga not recognized anymore

  I don't know what happened, but yesterday everything worked fine, but when I woke up this morning and booted my computer to Ubuntu 14.04 a bunch of hardware isn't recognized anymore. I use a dual monitor setup with dvi-d and vga, but the vga screen isn't recognized anymore and the dvi-d monitor is recognized as "Built-in Display" while I'm not on a laptop. Also every device connected through usb isn't recognized anymore either. I have a keyboard with the blue round connector, which still works, so I can still log in though. The computer goes slower than usual and I have no idea what has happened. Can anybody point me in the direction I should start looking, because this is scary! I just checked and both the front and back sound connectors stopped working also :/ Edit: The devices connected through USB are recognized as they all show up using sudo lsusb, Ubuntu just doesn't let me use them anymore.

• Simplifying data search using .NET

  An example on the asp.net site has an example of using Linq to create a search feature on a Music album site using MVC. In practice this pattern doesn't seem to scale well because as the search criteria expands I keep adding more and more conditions which looks and feels unpleasant/repetitive. How can I refactor this pattern? One idea I have is to create a column in every table that is "searchable" which could be a computed column that concatenates all the data from the different columns (SQL Server 2008). So instead of having movie genre and title it would be something like. if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(searchString)) { movies = movies.Where(s => s.SearchColumn.Contains(searchString)); } What are the performance/design/architecture implications of doing this? I have also tried using procedures that use dynamic queries but then I have just moved the ugliness to the database. E.g. CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[search_music] @title as varchar(50), @genre as varchar(50) AS -- set the variables to null if they are empty IF @title = '' SET @title = null IF @genre = '' SET @genre = null SELECT m.* FROM view_Music as m WHERE (title = @title OR @title IS NULL) AND (genre LIKE '%' + @genre + '%' OR @genre IS NULL) ORDER BY Id desc OPTION (RECOMPILE) Any suggestions? Tips?

• Dual boot (Win 7 & Ubuntu 13.10 clock problem

  I'm a "newbie" to Ubuntu, but I've been wrestling with this problem for several hours and don't seem to be able to solve it: When I set the time in Windows (Indianapolis, Eastern U.S. time zone) and then re-boot to Ubuntu, the computer time goes to Hawaiian time. When the time is set in Ubuntu, and the computer is rebooted to Windows the time is advanced by 5 hours. I've set the time in the BIOS, and it seems to make no difference. I've tried setting the time from "automatic" to "manual", all with the same result. Not a big problem, but it shows some underlying glitch. Could anyone explain?

• Gnome 3: Moving the status(?) icons to the top

  I'm not sure of any of the terminology, so I'll have to explain things simply, to make sure you understand what I'm saying. I'm using Gnome 3, and when I bring the mouse to the bottom right of the screen, a bar pops up, with icons of some things that are running in the background (at the moment, mine has "Update Manager", "Removable Devices", "caffeine-cup"). Is there any way to move these items to the bar at the top of the screen, alongside the icons for volume, network connectivity and universal access (how do I get rid of that btw)? Thanks

• Super Computer Built from Raspberry Pi Boards and LEGO Bricks

  It was only a matter of time before someone chained together dozens of Raspberry Pi boards into a serviceable super computer; read on to see how a team of Southampton scientists built a 64-core machine using them. From the University of South Hampton press release: Professor Cox comments: “As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.” The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named “Iridis-Pi” after the University’s Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under £2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi). Professor Cox uses the free plug-in ‘Python Tools for Visual Studio’ to develop code for the Raspberry Pi. • Magento: add product twice to cart, with different attributes!

  Hello all, i have been working with this for a whole day but i cannot find any solution: I have a product (lenses), which has identical attributes, but user can choose one attribute set for one eye and another attribute set for another. On the frontend i got it ok, see it here: http://connecta.si/clarus/index.php/featured/acuvue-oasys-for-astigmatism.html So the user can select attributes for left or right eye, but it is the same product. I build a function, wich should take a product in a cart (before save), add other set of attributes, so there should be two products in the cart. What happens is there are two products, but with the same set of attributes???
