• Logging in to a locked computer

  Just recently I have stumbled across an old family laptop that has been out of use for nearly two years. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium so I'm not quite as enthused about my find as I originally thought I was going to be. However, when I power up the computer it immediately bring me to a login prompt. No one in the family remembers the password it is set to and I am eager to get into this machine. Does anyone know of a way to work around this issue and get into the computer to be able to find out what was configured and saved on it two years ago. Without re-installing the OS I want to bring it back into commission within the family.

• Outlook 2010: Cached Exchange Mode, File Storage and Security

  I'm in an environment where profile space is a premium, and most users have "frozen" machines, meaning that on restart, the C: drive is returned to its original state. Cached Exchange Mode sounds interesting to me, but I'm wondering if we can take advantage of it without causing other issues. Where in the file system does the cached data get stored? Is it in the profile? A temp folder? Is the cached file secured in some way to keep others from seeing it?

  What is it? And what causes it? Is it only for uncorrectable DIMM Errors(Troubleshooting DIMM errors)? When an UCE occurs, the memory controller causes an immediate reboot of the system. During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case.   I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors... • Why does WMI Provider Host ( WmiPrvSE.exe ) keep spiking my CPU ?

  I generally keep my laptop on 24x7, and at the end of the day it's really annoying to have my thighs burnt because over overheating. The overheating seems to be a result of WMI Provider Host ( WmiPrvSE.exe ) spiking the CPU utilization to 25% every few minutes. Any ideas why this is happening ? I have an HP Envy 14 (w/ the HP bundled crap) running on Windows 7 Home Premium. (Note: Based on @nhinkle's past observations, it seems that HP Wireless Manager might be the culprit, is there any way to confirm this ?)

• Can I grant permissions on files in windows 7 using a security identifier from another machine

  I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup). • Domain name is forwarding to my localhost, no idea why

  On my local development machine, I have a WAMP setup (Windows Vista Home Premium, Apache 2, MySQL and PHP 5). One of my projects is rehash.dustinfineout.com, which may be related to the problem... For some reason, when I try to visit http://www.rehash.com in a browser, it forwards automatically to 127.0.0.1 loopback/localhost. I discovered this entirely accidentally. I have already looked at the http.conf and extra/httpd-vhosts.conf Apache configuration files and these are not causing it. I also checked the windows hosts file but that had no entries in it either (C:/WINDOWS/System32/drivers/etc/hosts - maybe there is another location I need to check). Any ideas? Just to clarify, rehash.com is NOT my domain.

• Can't connect Alienware M11x wireless to internet thru families router

  Morning All, Have an Alienware M11x loaded with Win 7 Premium with the Dell half card wifi. Also have a Netgear and Belkin USB external adapters (b/g and N to include dual radios. No joy either. Families Internet is served thru Charter and they use a Motorola Router. No matter if we reset the router, I cannot connect to the Net but can talk to the router. BTW... my brother only uses WEP as a number of connected items are old and my folks are not in a high threat area for attacks. Frustrated, as I know what I'm doing but this really has me stumped. Any thoughts? Much appreciated, Jim

• Can't see any YouTube videos

  I have a problem with watching YouTube videos. It says: "An error occurred, please try again later". I've tried loading different videos and that's what it says to all the videos I try to watch. I've tried using another browser, clearing cache + cookies etc, but none of that really worked out. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, I use Google Chrome as my browser. And the YouTube videos was able to be watched earlier. I suspect that it has something to do with the PC, since I've got YouTube working on my laptop earlier. Not sure if it still works on my laptop though. Hope I've given enough information for you to help me out with this problem. Feel free to ask if there's anything else you need to know. Anyone who can help me out?

• How to Shutdown PC by Pressing Power Button

  I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power. What I want is that upon pressing Power Button it should at once start shutdown without asking any more confirmations System details: Win-7 Home Premium 64 bit Intel i3 530 Asus P montherboard EDIT: It is Desktop PC

• Artefacts during HDV capture

  When I try to capture HDV video stream from a Canon HV20 camera to a Dell Studio 1558 (Intel i7 720qm) laptop running Win 7 Home Premium x64, the image appears with a very annoying noise - it contains block artefacts. Something is wrong with the Fire Wire controller (Ricoh 1304 OHCI host controller, build-in). Tried changing the driver to legacy one to no avail. This does not happen with DV stream. I'm using a Belkin cable. The capture works OK on another machine.

The specs written on the dock where the battery goes are: NSTNN - Q35C My questions are: How to calculate the number of cells. I've read some post how to calculate but I don't know the nominal voltage. I saw batteries with 8,12 cells and 106Wh and 7000mAh, can I use it on my laptop or it can make damage. In other words, what the max mAh and Wh I can use for battery in my notebook?

• Determine which software product a Microsoft Product Key activates

  Without a product key being labelled, is there is any way to identify what Microsoft software product a given product key is meant to activate? Let's say for example I had the product key ABCDE-FGHIJ-KLMNO-PQRST-UVWXY, but I had no clue if was meant for Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium, Vista Ultimate, or even Office 2010. Does Microsoft (or anyone for that matter) have any kind of tool that I could paste the key into and get a result that identifies the software product the key is meant for (or at least a good estimate)? Note: I have searched and searched many times on the Internet, but the only results I ever find are how to recover a lost product key by using something like Nirsoft ProduKey. This is not what I am looking for.

  I have a dell studio 1555 laptop with a GPU inside. The details are below; Hardware details Software details I can play games in widescreen in Vista, but not in 7. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the latest Catalyst Control Center. Instead of widescreen, the games are running in a classic style, say 1024x768 ratio. When I play need for speed underground, the maximum possible resolution is 1024x768 (all other games are like this). I have no problem with HD videos and anything else. How can I fix this? • cannot run CMD script from Vista windows explorer

  I am running Vista Home Premium. I tried to write a script to do some simple automation.... it does not work! even the most simple script like: @echo ON dir . does not get executed and only an empty CMD shell pops open when started from explorer. From the cmd windows there is no problem. This is really weird and I have never seen this before (but wrote many CMD scripts before) ftype cmdfile and batfile are unchanged from "%1" %* virusscan done - no problems Is there a policy setting that might have changed? Any ideas?

• Sony Vaio: I can't type 'less and greater than' signs in TR keyboard layout

  I have a strange trouble with my Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX. My laptop has a Turkish Q keyboard and I'm using TR keyboard layout on Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. The problem is, I cannot find a usual way to type less than or greater than signs unless I switch to EN keyboard layout. These signs are showed on the keyboard together with the Turkish letters "Ö" and "Ç", as you can see from the below photo of my laptop's keyboard. So, how can I type these signs without switching to EN keyboard layout? I tried Fn and Alt keys but it doesn't work. I need to use TR layout since I need Turkish letters while writing my documents and e-mails.

• RAID 1 not performing as expected

  I recently bought a new 320Gb hard drive for my computer to set up RAID 1 on it for some added security. Installation went as smooth as could possibly be (plug in power, plug in data cable, start up computer, Intel software recognized new drive, right click create RAID 1, done!). However, for some inexplicable reason, I seem to have strange test results when using BENCH32. On my old configuration, a single 7200 rpm drive, I achieved about 60 MB/s write and 70 MB/s read. With a new RAID 1 configuration, I would expect the write to be slightly diminished but read to be significantly improved (though not exactly double speed). However, with the new configuration, I am getting 90 MB/s write and only about 80 MB/s read. I should NOT be getting improved write performance, especially NOT better than read! What's going on? My system setup is: q6600 2.4ghz CPU 4Gb DDR2 667mhz RAM on board Intel ICH9R "RAID chip" 2x Seagate 7200 RPM 320GB drives in RAID 1 Widows 7 home premium 64-bit

• What would cause a CMD window to open after windows starts?

  As of the past few weeks, when I start windows, A CMD window opens and stays open after all the programs and applications launch. I have just been exiting or closing the box, but I have been wondering what would cause it to open in the first place? I have checked to see what is in start up (and I have been looking for CMD or RUN) but I don't see anything out of the ordinary. How can I get this to stop? I have windows 7 Home premium 64.

• Will disabling NAT on my wireless router cause a performance hit on my DSL router?

  I have a Thomson TG508v2 router/modem and a brand new AirPort Extreme connected to it. At first, I set the AirPort Extreme to "share a public IP", which enables DHCP/NAT. Everything works great but I was having the Double NAT error. So I set the AirPort Extreme as bridge mode, which disables DHCP/NAT and let my crappy modem handle my internal network IPs. Will this cause any performance hit in my network? I'm worried because I'll outsource this job from AirPort Extreme (premium hardware) to the crappy modem. Before you suggest, I tried setting my modem as a bridge and configuring PPPoE on the AirPort Extreme, however it wouldn't connect to the internet, so I just dismissed leaving the modem as bridge.

• Word 2007 "Out of Memory or Disk Space" Error on launch.

  Word 2007 is installed on a Vista Home Premium machine and whenever it starts up it opens what appears to be a dynamic installer to do something and then throws up the "Out of Memory or Disk Space" error. Word 2007 never completes starting up. Reinstalling Word hasn't helped and if I can avoid reinstalling Windows until Windows 7 is released and get Word working in the mean time, that would be ideal. I've been looking around for a solution, once of which seemed to point to a problem with the user account. I created a second user on the machine and Word still had the same problem. The other solution that seems possible is a corrupted normal.dot/normal.dotm file. However, even in the location it should be, I can't seem to find it. Am I going in the right direction with this? Is there another solution I haven't come across that will fix this? If it is possible that renaming normal.dot/normal.dotm how can I find it?

• Machine only responds to network requests from machines it is pinging

  I have two machines. WOPR: Ubuntu server edition 10.10 LTS 32 bit Adam Selene: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit / Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 LTS 64 bit I want to be able to SSH from Adam Selene to WOPR, so I connect them to the same network. Here's where things get weird. I cannot connect to WOPR in any way under normal circumstances. But, if WOPR is pinging Adam, then it starts responding to ping requests, HTTP gets, and SSH tunnels. I'm an amateur, and brand new to Ubuntu server, so I suspect there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but there's an off chance it's a bug in the OS. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior?   Hello, i have a WD Mybook Premium (wd5000h032) it used to work just fine but suddenly i can't access to it. The blue lights turn on but the drive doesn't start, it makes no click, nor any other sound, it just like if it was disconnected from USB, of course my PC doesn't detect it, i've tried with trhee different USB cables two PCs and one laptop and nothing. Is it really dead? how can i recover the information stored there? i think the problem could be the case, if so, could i take out the disk and connect it as an internal drive? or could i buy another case?

• Color Calibrate Dual Monitor XP SP2

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• Creative software leftovers - ASIO error message

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?
