    I have a couple of concerns, I'm busy building a normal .mobi site for a client, so basically how I understand this is keep it simply since most phones do not support JavaScript and have a small screen etc. So I build a mobi site using only content and basic links. Now my question is how do mobi widgets work on a mobile site? I've googled and could not find a answer? Is this possible at all?

  • 3D Web Sites and Applications

    I have for the last several years been struggling to understand why the Internet has so few actually useful 3D web applications. It's 2009 and still everything looks like pages from a Sears catalog. You can turn on your TV and find flying logos every night. After that you can get nostalgic and flip on ol' N-64 and play some Zelda or Mario Kart. On the PC, Sims 2 is approaching 6 years old already.. And then there's WoW. Current generation of users - the Facebook crowd, let's say - has ~no~ problem dealing with multi-dimensional environments.. And yet, nothing really immersive seems to happen on the web. I've been hearing about VRML and X3D for at least 10 years and ... pffft .. - nothing earth shaking going on there. Java 3D ? .. cool ! .. but ...... Still .... waiting and waiting. Do you think it will take a killer-web app before people become accustomed-to or will seek to use what could more more engaging web experiences? I am not talking about Second Life and other dedicated downloaded applications. I probably am more focused on apps like Lively or SceneCaster or Hangout or a half dozen others that are delivered 'painlessly' directly into web pages. My own particular interest is in the domain of virtual stores and immersive shopping. Its been a challenge trying to understand why an average user would not want to browse and wander a changing mall-space - like in the real world -- entertained by unexpected discovery. Is the 3D web always going to be 5 years in the future ?

    Hi, I've run into codility.com new cool service after listening to one of the recent stackoverflow.com podcasts. In short, it presents the user with a programming riddle to solve, within a given time frame. The user writes code in an online editor, and has the ability to run the program and view the standard output. After final submission, the user sees its final score and which tests failed him. Quoting Joel Spolsky: You are given a programming problem, you can do it in Java, C++, C#, C, Pascal, Python and PHP, which is pretty cool, and you have 30 minutes. And it gives you an editor in a webpage. And you've got to just start typing your code. And it's going to time you, basically you have to do it in a certain amount of time. And it actually runs your code and determines the performance characteristics of your code. It is intended for job interview screenings, but the idea seems very cool for code-golfs and for practicing new languages. Do you know if there's any proper open replacement? Adam

  • Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

    Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

  • What is the technical reason that so many social media sites don't allow you to edit your text?

    A common complaint I hear about Facebook, Twitter, Ning and other social sites is that once a comment or post is made, it can't be edited. I think this goes against one of the key goals of user experience: giving the user agency, or the ability to control what he does in the software. Even on Stackexchange sites, you can only edit the comments for a certain amount of time. Is the inability for so many web apps to not allow users to edit their writing a technical shortcoming or a "feature by design"?

    I had always assumed that AJAX-driven content was invisible to search engines. (i.e. content inserted into the DOM via XMLHTTPRequest) For example, in this site, the main content is loaded via AJAX request by the browser: http://www.trustedsource.org/query/terra.cl ...if you view this page with Javascript disabled, the main content area is blank. However, Google cache shows the full content after the AJAX load: http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:JqcT6EVDHBoJ:www.trustedsource.org/query/terra.cl+http://www.trustedsource.org/query/terra.cl&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us So, apparently search engines do index content loaded by AJAX. Questions: Is this a new feature in search engines? Most postings on the web indicate that you have to publish duplicate static HTML content for search engines to find them. Are there any tricks to get an AJAX-driven content to be crawled by search engines (besides creating duplicate static HTML content). Will the AJAX-driven content be indexed if it is loaded from a separate subdomain? How about a separate domain?

    Hi. I am trying to build a web site with ASP.NET MVC, I'm new to this. My question is: how can I display the default login dialog? I am not referring to a custom dialog, like the jQuery Dialog, there is a default pop-up for credentials, which looks different depending on browser, same as with javascript alert(), but I don't know how to display it. To know what I mean, go to http://fit.c2.com/wiki.cgi?WelcomeVisitors, there is a Login button at the bottom of the page, when you click it a pop-up appears. That is what I want to display. Any ideas?

    Hi, On my MOSS site I am trying to save a publishing site as a site template. Then create subsites from this template. I am able to sucessfully create the site template and it is populated in the site template gallery.   • Monitor web sites visited using Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome, Firefox and Safari in Python

    I am working on a project for work and have seemed to run into a small problem. The project is a similar program to Web Nanny, but branded to my client's company. It will have features such as website blocking by URL, keyword and web activity logs. I would also need it to be able to "pause" downloads until an acceptable username and password is entered. I found a script to monitor the URL visited in Internet Explorer (shown below), but it seems to slow the browser down considerably. I have not found any support or ideas onhow to implement this in other browsers. So, my questions are: 1). How to I monitor other browser activity / visited URLs? 2).     I've built a web site on ASP.NET MVC and one little section of it should be a blog. I'm looking for a blog to integrate. In the worst case scenario it'd be a WordPress with a custom skin and RSS integration to the rest of the site. The best would be to have an ASP.NET MVC add-on, but I can live with ASP.NET WebForms. Do you have any recomendations on the engine? I've been checking out BlogEngine.Net and I'd like to have some other ideas to compare. Anything in particular you can point to regarding this integration?
