  How to stop blanking screen although I am active on Ubuntu Karmic on old IBM Laptop 600E? After some time of working on the machine the screen goes blank. When I hit ESC on the built-in keyboard (not on the attached USB keyboard where I work) it comes back and everything works fine until the next screen-blanking. I suspect it is some power management issue. When I use an old keyboard that has a ps2 connector it does not happen. So my guess is that the usb keyboard does not update the power management timer that detects when the session was last used? I am using fluxbox window manager. I do not want to disable power management because it is nice that the fan only works at the necessary speed (the fan spped is regulated which I can hear) But I could disable power management for testing purposes.

• Comprehensive solution for managing patches, event viewing, change management, inventory, etc

  I'm looking for a solution that incorporates most or all of the following: Patch Management, Server event viewing/tracking, AD change management, ticketing and internal/external kb, remote access - ability to shadow user sessions or create new ones, imaging, and inventory. Our environments contains Windows Servers and ESXi Hosts (We're not completely virtual, but we're moving that direction). Various Cisco and Linksys switches and firewalls. This is a tall order, and I don't know if it can be done on a reasonable budget.   Yesterday I installed .Net Framework 4 as it was required by Liquid XML Studio, but just after installing it, My SQL Server Management Studio stopped working. As soon as open the IDE I get package microsoft sql management studio package failed to load I tried pretty much all the solution posted on the internet but could not get it working, today when I removed the .Net Framework 4, SQL server management studio started working again. Then just to test, I installed the .Net Framework 4 back ... and I started getting the same problem in management studio. I want both on my machine ! how can i do it ? PS : OS is Windows 7

One major problem, however, is that this escape string is not escaped itself, causing line-wrapping problems with commands longer than the initial line. This was annoying, so I set out looking for a solution. Turns out, simply escaping the previous escape sequence corrects line wrapping: \[\033k\]\[\033\\\] Great! My hardstatus window title still updates to the name of the currently running program, and now my longer commands wrap to the second line correctly. However, with this new escape sequence in my PS1, screen updates the window title to the actual command I am typing, not simply the name of the current program once it is executed. I am wondering, has anyone gotten this working correctly - i.e. line wrapping and proper updating of the hardstatus window title?

• Screen recording in Windows 8 makes PC unusable?

  OS used: Windows 8 Pro x64 Hi there, I got a weird problem. I tried to record my screen using different screen recording applications like Camtasia7, Hypercam, and some others. So if I hit "record" everything works fine for about 3-4 seconds. Then the PC slows down heavily caused by extremly high IO usage. The PC gets nearly unusable and laggs like hell. I can't switch applications, can't get TaskManager with Ctrl+Alt+Del, or something else without waiting 1-3 Minutes. After about 5-8 Minutes and a bit of luck I am sometimes able to end the process of the recorder and IO calms down very slow(100% IO lasts for about 2 Minutes before becoming normal). I don't know why this happens. Screen recorders that support Windows 8 aren't out afaik but at least Camtasia7 worked with Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 8 Release Preview (only had to change record method to .avi). No slow downs or something else. Is there anyone out there who knows this problem too? Is there maybe a solution to this problem?

• Dell Latitude will not boot after fresh Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Black screen

  I have an old dell latitude d610 that I've just installed ubuntu 12.10 onto, and now unfortunately it will not complete booting up. The screen flashes purple but then fades out and dies. I'm fairly sure there is an issue with graphics drivers, as I had to turn on "nomodeset" in the options when installing off a DVD to see the installer, but I'm very new to linux and don't know terribly much at all apart from what I've read on the net. I have been able to hold down shift and bring up GRUB, and entered into recovery mode, and when I enter into the low graphics mode, the xserver log file says it can detect a screen but found none with a useable configuration, then goes on to say a fatal server error has occurred and no screen have been found at all, telling me to check a log file at "/var/log/xorg.0.log" I have no idea how to check this specific log file! Attempting to actually go further than this in low graphics mode and restart the display simply artefacts the screen. It is all very strange and annoying because I did once by random have the machine boot completely for no apparent reason, but upon restarting the issue reoccurred.

• Xubuntu 12.04 : Random boot to black screen

  My xubuntu 12.04 has worked flawlessly since install in September. However, lately I randomly have the following boot issue : The computer boots to grub, and after choosing xubuntu either boots normally or boots to a black screen. Here are some observations I have made : The black screen seems to happen randomly. The black screen does not seem to happen in safe mode (- nomodeset in grub). The black screen does not allow me to ctrl + alt + F1-6 into a terminal. The black screen allows me to use SysRq keys (Alt + SysRq + K does not work though). The black screen often happens on first boot in several hours and the computer usually boots normally after a RSEINUB. When the computer boots I get "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use" at startup and "Could not write bytes: broken pipe" at shutdown. However research on these errors did not yield answers to my particular issue. Comparing Xorg.0.log (successful boot) and Xorg.0.log.old (black screen), and reading the answers to similar problem, it seems that I might have a X driver issue. However the system worked flawlessly since lately. Additional info on my system : ACER AO722 C62kk Operating system : 3.2.0-31-generic ubuntu Edit : I made a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 x64, the issue is still there ... (I have a separate /home so config. files were not erased). Edit 2 : I followed troubleshooting blank screen, so my new observations are without quiet and splash in grub : When the system boots normally, the screen goes black after grub then lights up and displays text information then goes to login screen. (After that the desktop starting time vary substantially, which is new and may be a separate issue ?). When the boot fails, after grub the screen goes black, lights up, goes black, lights up again and most times goes black again. At this point it responds to Alt+SysReq K by lighting up but no more, and has to be rebooted through Alt+SysReq+ RSEINUB. Thank you for your time and attention in advance ! Thibaud Ruelle

  Perhaps I'm just naive, but when I try to decipher the wall of tasks I'm targeted to do over the course of a week, I just can't help but think whoever builds the project schedule needs to get some remedial training on basic project management. For example, I am assigned 13 tasks today, the shortest lasting .13 days (default time metric in Microsoft Project), and the longest lasting .75 days. I can't help but think that it is blatant micromanagement scheduling projects in sub 10 minute intervals. The effects of management are becoming evident in slipped tasks, resource assignment exceeding capacity by a factor of two at some points in time, and spending more time clearing tasks and figuring out what comes next than actually doing work. How can I convince the project manager to create tasks with larger duration and to see the larger picture?

• How can we unify business goals and technical goals?

  Some background I work at a small startup: 4 devs, 1 designer, and 2 non-technical co-founders, one who provides funding, and the other who handles day-to-day management and sales. Our company produces mobile apps for target industries, and we've gotten a lot of lucky breaks lately. The outlook is good, and we're confident we can make this thing work. One reason is our product development team. Everyone on the team is passionate, driven, and has a great sense of what makes an awesome product. As a result, we've built some beautiful applications that we're all proud of. The other reason is the co-founders. Both have a brilliant business sense (one actually founded a multi-million dollar company already), and they have close ties in many of the industries we're trying to penetrate. Consequently, they've brought in some great business and continue to keep jobs in the pipeline. The problem The problem we can't seem to shake is how to bring these two awesome advantages together. On the business side, there is a huge pressure to deliver as fast as possible as much as possible, whereas on the development side there is pressure to take your time, come up with the right solution, and pay attention to all the details. Lately these two sides have been butting heads a lot. Developers are demanding quality while managers are demanding quantity. How can we handle this? Both sides are correct. We can't survive as a company if we build terrible applications, but we also can't survive if we don't sell enough. So how should we go about making compromises? Things we've done with little or no success: Work more (well, it did result in better quality and faster delivery, but the dev team has never been more stressed out before) Charge more (as a startup, we don't yet have the credibility to justify higher prices, so no one is willing to pay) Extend deadlines (if we charge the same, but take longer, we'll end up losing money) Things we've done with some success: Sacrifice pay to cut costs (everyone, from devs to management, is paid less than they could be making elsewhere. In return, however, we all have creative input and more flexibility and freedom, a typical startup trade off) Standardize project management (we recently started adhering to agile/scrum principles so we can base deadlines on actual velocity, not just arbitrary guesses) Hire more people (we used to have 2 developers and no designers, which really limited our bandwidth. However, as a startup we can only afford to hire a few extra people.) Is there anything we're missing or doing wrong? How is this handled at successful companies? • Company wants to write custom project management tool, rather then use third party product.

  At the company I work, we are really wanting to get into the agile methodology for developing software. One thing that I'm not excited about is the fact that management wants us to build a custom project management feature inside the company's Intranet. I think this is a total waste of time. There are many great third party tools available (e.g. Axosoft OnTime) that can do everything we need, and more. For how much development time it would cost us to build our own project management module, we could buy numerous licences for a third party product. One concern is that, whilst we are writing code for a client, and using our custom Intranet project management module, we find bugs in the module that need fixing ASAP. That means having to stop work on the client code to fix the Intranet. That just puts shivers down my spine. Another worry I have is lack of functionality. This custom module is going to be so basic, that it will just feel really crap to use. That might sound a bit snooty, but for goodness sake, many third party tools are so feature rich, that the idea of having to write our own tool makes feel very uneasy. In fact, I can't be bothered. What do you guys think? I'm going to raise this issue with my boss, since I feel it's such an important topic to talk about. EDIT: Thanks for the great responses, much appreciated. To summarize some of them: Money Naturally my boss does want to save money, by not forking out a few hundred £'s for licences. However, for us to write a custom tool, it will take x number of days, multiplied by approx £500, which is our costs. I don't see the business value in this. Management have mentioned that they want to sell the Intranet as a product in the future, but it's so custom to our needs (and downright basic), that in order to give it to another client, I can see us having to fork a version of the code and rebuild the majority of it anyway. So it's not like we're gaining anything there in reuse. Features Having our own custom module means not feature bloat - only the functionality we require will be in the product. My issue is that there are plenty of free, open-source project management tools out there with minimal features already. So even if cost is an issue, we could look into open-source. Again it all boils down to the fact that I don't see the point in writing a project management tool in this day and age. It's a bit like writing your own web browser - why?, what's the point? Although management are asking for this tool, just because they are, it does not mean I'm going to please them and do it just because they asked for it. If something does not make sense, then I will raise it as a concern. At the end of the day, it's the developers who write the code, it's the developers who make money for a business. Thus, as far I'm concerned, the devs have a very big role in deciding how a company should manage projects and what tools are used. • Dell D620 Windows 7 Blank screen

  When I installed Windows 7 on my Dell D620 it was all fine until a couple of days later most times when I either shut down or suspend (by closing the lid). When I unsuspend or startup the computer, there is often a completely blank screen (can't see post screen or anything), and restarting doesn't help. I've found that I can eventually bring it back up again by suspending and unsuspending a few times, but obviously this is not ideal. Has anyone else experienced this? I think it is a driver issue, that somehow the driver is putting the video card into a certain mode that it forgets how to get it back out of. • Crop and Capture screen software/plugin for windows7

  Do you know a software or a plugin for a browser that lets me capture what's on my screen and crop it by ratio. I have a photoshop but I don't want to keep opening it just to capture a simple image and then croping it and then saving it. I want to quickly select a portion on my screen save it. If it's possible it lets me crop by ratio (eg. 4:3). Most that I will capture are in my browser, I use either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. But I can't find a good plugin that meets my requirements.. Thanks for your suggestion and Merry Xmas

• Screen startup apps

  I know that most people don't bother with things like screen anymore, but I happen to really like it, even in this GUI day and age. I still do most of my development from a BASH prompt, so it's extremely useful to me. What I'm wondering is what the easiest way is to start an instance of screen (stored in a shell script or .screenrc or somewhere else) so that it starts up with set commands already running in set windows. For example, I use a django test server, so I'd like one window to come up running "python manage.py runserver" and another blank, waiting for commands. The man page is wholly indecipherable. These old unix utilities can do quite nearly everything, so I'm sure this is possible, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. I

• Building a new PC, Installing XP, blue screen of death

  I got a gigabyte barebones kit and am installing windows-XP(SP1) and the initial setup works, then it restarts and goes into the second phase of the setup. Then when installing components (I think that's what it says) it gets half way done and comes up with a blue screen saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. BUT! I had gotten past that by installing windows-XP media center addition Now I am trying to install the drivers for my Asus ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card and I get another blue screen of death that doesnt give much info something about address x0000005. Would you think there is something wrong with something in my system or do you think if I got windows 7 that would take care of things? Sorry for probably not giving enough info.
