  • Lost desktop settings in KDE

    After next unsuccessful attempt to install ATI fglrx drivers, when I also changed GRUB config a bit (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"). When I restored everything to default (uninstalled fglrx, restored default values in GRUB config and xorg.conf) KDE logged me into completely new desktop, with (I suppose) default configuration. Is there a way to restore my previous desktop settings? What could be the cause? SOLVED: Something was messed out with display settings. Search for 'Display Configuration' and there deselect one display. Or is there a better option?

    I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Desktop, but I don't know what flavor is the better for my system. What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements? What kind of CPU? How much memory? Should I have Hardware Acceleration? What flavor should I use? This is an attempt of a canonical answer. My answers have the "official minimal requirements", the recommended are a mix of official sources and opinion based (along with the answer it's told the source). You can comment or edit if you feel that the information is obsolete or incomplete. Is a good rule of thumb that any system capable to run Windows Vista, 7, 8 x86 OS X will almost always be a lot faster with any Ubuntu flavor even if they are lower-spec than described below.

  • Catalyst forgets monitor settings after reboot or log out in 12.10

    I have a Samsung monitor connected to my ATI Radeon graphic card via HDMI. By default the screen has a black border around, but I can disable it in the Catalyst menu to get full screen. (There is a scalebar that I have to set to the highest value.) My problem is that every time I turn off and on my computer it changes back and I have to set it up again. It is really annoying. Is there any way to make this setting permanent? Notes: 1. I open Catalyst with admin rights. 2. When I open the Catalyst settings menu, it looks like that it keeps my settings, because the scalebar stays at the highest point, but still it doesn't scale up my screen until I move back and forth the scale bar to the same point

  • How to reverse file ownership and permission settings

    I installed LAMP and WordPress on my system a week ago. Since I couldn't create Child Themes in WordPress and work with PHP folders for my other projects collocated in var/www without using Nautilus I wanted to solve the permissions issue. I hoped to bring a solution carrying out the commands on this page for my WordPress folder: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/FileSystemPermissions. This allowed me to play with any file in the folder like creating and modifying .css files through WP Admin, etc. But after a restart I discovered that I can't change DNS settings of my network connections in the list anymore because it is asking me the root password and even though I enter the password it doesn't let me do the action giving "insufficient privileges" error. Can you help me correct the mistake I possibily made during the configuration and, maybe, configure again the permission and ownership settings for var/www/somefolder as it is adviced to be configured under general circumstances?   • Is there a way to use a dictionary or xml in the Application Settings?

    I have to store a complex type in the application settings. I thought that storing it as XML would work best. The problem is I don't know how store XML. I prefer to store it as a managed XML rather than using just a string of raw XML having to parse it on each access. I managed to set the Type column of the setting to XDocument, but I was unable to set its value. Is there a way to use XDocument or XML in application settings? Update I found a way, simply by editing the .settings file with the xml editor. I changed it to a custom serializable dictionary, but I get the following error when I try to access the setting-property (I set it to a serialized representation of the default value). The property 'Setting' could not be created from it's default value. Error message: There is an error in XML document (1, 41). Any ideas will be appreciated.

There are some file path settings and permissions details that differ on the two (and there is nothing I can do to change this). Is there some way of detecting which machine the app is sitting on (it's only one of two), either by detecting the operating system or the computer's name so I can then using the appropriate settings.

    I'm just putting together an internal data system for a client, which is ASP.NET VB, backed by an SQL database, on an in-house IIS7.5 dedicated server. I want to store certain global settings, such as the age limit for news articles, admin contacts etc, in a file NOT within the database (i.e. to avoid unnecessary database query's) Where would the best place to store this be? global.asax? app.config? or a custom XML file? how would i import these at runtime? (probably to session variables) ETA: Also - the settings must be editable from within the site, i.e. an admin section i'm yet to build

  • Is there a way of leveling/compressing the sound system-wide?

    As a Laptop user, I'm sure that a lot of people, even the ones using Netbooks would have already gone through this problem. Especially when listening to podcasts, and using it as an example, the sound might have loud moments and quiet moments, one person speaking loud and the other speaking very quiet in the same episode. Thereby, I always wanted the sound to be compressed system-wide, and I just noted the other day, that in Windows, some Realtek drivers already offer this function. We have already a pulseaudio plugin for equalization system-wide, and although it still has problems like not letting us change its values and listen the change in real time, or cracking the sound while changing pulse volume, I do love it and use it. Now I'm just missing something to keep the sound around 0db (or near the volume level you're using) as a leveler plugin for pulseaudio. Any suggestion?

    I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. So what is it that you can't change? The CPU? Motherboard? Thanks for any replies

    Hi All: Having an issue installing the CCMsetup client on desktops. The CCMSetup makes it to the PC, files are there, it gets added to the services for automatic start, it starts, but quits almost instantly. Logs on the desktop show a entry like this. <![LOG[Failed to successfully complete HTTP request.   • How to get partition information from non-booting server?

    Need to manually rebuild a mirrored array on a server and am in the process of reinstalling SBS 2003 on it. However, it's a Dell server, and know that there's the Dell FAT32 diagnostics partition, a system partition, and a data partition, but do not know the size of each. Planning on reinstalling SBS 2003, all applications on the server, and then doing a System State restore, but figured that not having the correct partitions will cause some grief: am I right? Almost thinking that the size of the partitions shouldn't matter, but not positive. Question: should I care about the size of the partition? If so, how can I get this partition information from a non-booting drive? We have an Acronis image of the one working disk and the partitions are mounted/viewable in Explorer on a workstation, but I'm not sure where the Logical Disk Manager/Disk Management data is stored and/or if there's a way to retrieve it without having a working Windows installation.

I found the sar command, but wanted to know the difference between sar -B and sar -W I read the man page, and I understand that -B gives me the paging statistics and -W gives me the swapping statistics. What I would like to understand is the following: What is the correlation between the two sets of statistics. When should I be concerned about -B and when about -W? ie, what values from each command should I be concerned with? Which statistic is more closely related to system performance Thanks

    I have a bunch of touchscreen machines that I want to display a webpage on and have users interact with the webpage via the touchscreen. Right now, this is done with a full-blown OS with a browser set to run at startup. I think maybe the ideal solution is to use a Linux-based OS that boots up, starts X, then starts a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or whatever) in full screen mode. What kind of options do I have? I really want to avoid using a full-blown OS like I do now. It looks unprofessional and takes a while to boot up. I was thinking maybe Chrome OS or something, but I wouldn't know how to set it up for my purposes, since it's still designed to be used as a desktop OS instead of a kiosk-type OS.

  • System Centre Essentials 2007 Clients Losing Status

    Clients that have been reporting their state fine suddenly start reporting "Windows 0.0" for their OS and "Not yet contacted" for their Last Contacted date even though previously these values were present and correct. Any idea why this might be happening? I've spend a long time playing with wsauclt etc and just when I think I've the problem it comes back again! Thanks.
