  What is the best method to rip/encode a standard definition DVD, to be streamed to a Xbox360 from a Vista Media Center pc (preferably using free software). I’ve found tons of tutorials on the web explaining how to create wmv’s from vob files using FFMpeg, but every combination of settings that I have tried has resulted in very poor video quality. I’ve also tried various video conmversion tools, but everything seems to result in poor video quality, or audio that is out of sync with the picture. Please help!

• How can I send audio input as chunked HTTP?

  I am trying to create an interface with an external server, and don't know where to start. I would need to take audio as input to my computer, and send it to the remote server as a chunked HTTP request. The api that i'm trying to connect to is described here p1-5 http://dragonmobile.nuancemobiledeveloper.com/public/Help/HttpInterface/HTTP_Services_for_NDEV_v1.2_Silver_Version.pdf I have never worked with audio programmatically, so don't know what would be the most straighforward way to go about this? Are there solutions that exist out there that already do this? I've come across references to Shoutcast, VLC, Icecast, FFMPeg, Darkice, but I don't know if those are appropriate for what I'm trying to accomplish or not. Would appreciate any guidance, Thanks

• Error opening .wmv file

  I tried to open a .wmv file in Thunderbird. I was asked to download files in order to have it accessible. At the end of the installation An error occurred - Location not found. error message displayed with just the OK button available. Now when I press the Play button just the error message displays so I am not sure which packages need to be installed/uninstalled. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 (32-bit) with open-jdk-7. Error was generated when installing: GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin It seemed that it took a while to have the process completing all steps of the download / install before the error message displayed.

• How to play .mp4 movies?

  I have a .mp4 movie (it's an .mp4 file, and the "video codec" is Xvid, and the "audio codec" is mp3) that I want to play, but when I try to open it in MPlayer, it says "The steam is encrypted and decryption is not supported." I tried to apply the answer from this question and this wiki page, but neither worked. Any suggestions?   I would like to create a short clip of me playing Minecraft, an OpenGL game. The usual screencast recorders do not properly record OpenGL. What kind of software is available for this purpose? My experience with the software in the similar (but no longer duplicate) question: kazam: very low framerate despite setting to 60 FPS, no sound, unity menubar constantly flashing through the fullscreen window. RecordMyDesktop: max framerate setting is 50 FPS, but the video becomes extremely fast if not using the default 15 FPS. xvidcap: not available on 12.04 tibesti: not available on 12.04 wink: does not run ffmpeg: very low quality video and no sound with the recommended settings, might be tunable though (no gui unfortunately). kdenlive: uses recordmydesktop, and the recorded clip becomes corrupted aconv: video sped up, often broken image, no sound

• Choppy video in vlc even with hardware acceleration on ATI Radeon HD

  After installing Catalyst 11.12 and studying instructions (1, 2) to enable hardware acceleration I ended up with the following command: sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 vainfo && \ vainfo && \ vlc --verbose 2 --ffmpeg-hw video.1080p.x264.mkv The output confirms that it's using the VA API: avcodec decoder: Using VA API version 0.32 for hardware decoding. But even after a reboot the video still looks choppy. There's no vlc output to indicate that the codec is having trouble, or that it's skipping frames. Any idea what could be the problem? Using vlc 1.1.12 with default settings. Also tried (in sequence): sudo apt-get install libva-glx1 sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core Rebooting No luck yet. • Which of VLC's dependencies causes sound device detection?

  I am setting up a headless music server based on the minimal Ubuntu image. After having installed the packages openssh-server,pulseaudio, libmad0,flac,liboff0,libid3tag0,libvorbis0a,ffmpeg, mpd,mpc,mpdscribble, paman,paprefs,pavumeter neither my internal soundcard nor the external DAC where detected by pulseaudio, that is pactl list did only list the dummy devices. Several reboots did not change that. The hardware devices are detected properly: ~$ lsusb | grep Texas Bus 002 Device 002: ID 08bb:2706 Texas Instruments Japan ~$ lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Following a hunch, I installed vlc with all dependencies. After a reboot, both devices are detected! ~$ pactl list | grep "Sink: alsa_output" Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.usb-Burr-Brown_from_TI_USB_Audio_DAC-00-DAC.analog-stereo Now I would like to remove VLC again but keep the devices. The question is: which of the many dependencies of VLC enables proper device detection? And why on earth is it not a dependency of pulseaudio?

• 12.04's music players won't stream radio stations

  I cannot get any music player in 12.04 to stream radio stations. My previous OS (ubuntu 10.04) had no problems with this. I have tried Rhythmbox and Exaile. neither works in 12.04 (but both work fine in 10.04. I inputted this stream: http://ummedia12.rs.itd.umich.edu:8004 I see that an internet connection is established by "Python" and I hear the "Advertisement" that plays right before the stream begins. But then just silence. The stream works fine in VLC, but I like to use the music players because they "store" the URL and have a tab that says Radio. I can find no way to "store" the URL in VLC. Anyone know what's wrong and why it's not working in the music players? I have fluendo plugins installed. I have python installed. I have ffmpeg installed.

• All video players display black screen.

  I'm working in 10.04 Lucid. All my video players (Movie Player and VLC) and the preview windows in editors (OpenShot and Pitivi) will only display a black screen when playing a video. The sound is fine and the videos work fine on other computers. I have tried multiple formats from varying sources .MOV taken from old ffmpeg projects, .AVI straight from a camera, .MP4 using h.264 from OpenShot on another system, .OGV from a gtk-recordmydesktop session on this very computer. I even get a pure black screen in the viewer when starting a remote session in VNC. This box has a GeForce 8400 GS using the Nvidia drivers in case it may be a card problem or setting.

No matter what I do I just cannot get this to work. Can any one tell me how to 'burn-in' subtitles using avconv (or ffmpeg) ?

  Our site currently is going to require our users to download a player to view videos they will want to view on our site. The videos get uploaded by users from various sources (smartphones in 3gp format for example). However most people have Flash on their machines. I am trying to 'make a gentle stand' and tell the team that requiring a download of a video player is not acceptable. My thinking is this: instead of allowing people to upload 3gp and other formats then re-serving the exact format on REQUESTs from our site's users we will instead use a video converter such as FFMpeg to convert every uploaded video to FLV for viewing on flash. so when a user requests to view one of the videos on our site -- boom they probably already have Flash installed so we just play the video in their Flash player. I feel serving up FLV flash video is best. Does it ring true that requiring, say, a 3gp player download just to view a video is the wrong approach?

• Strange behaviour when screencasting

  Since an update I did yesterday I am not able to screencast any video using Kazam, Recordmydesktop or even ffmpeg/aviconv. After the upgrade to some libraries (A normal update that showed in Update manager) the problem was this: When doing the screencast, scrolling inside an Apps window like Firefox, Chrome or Gedit is not shown. The video only shows the last image it recognized before I started scrolling. For example with Gedit, I have a lot of text on it and when I start to scroll down, the video only shows what I had in the beginning while I listen to myself talk about what is in the rest of the file (Which is not shown in the video). When opening a window, for example again Gedit or Chrome it might not show in the video, it will just show the desktop without the window opened. I do not see any error with dmesg, syslog or others. What can I check to debug this problem?

In there, I learned that: I should avoid too high a volume, to prevent clipping I should avoid too low a volume, to prevent loss of resolution The question now is: What is too high a volume? What is too low? I am setting the volume via the GUI for sound config. It has an unamplified setting, a 100% setting, and volumes beyond 100%. After 100%, is there still resolution loss? How can I tell if there is clipping going on (given that my recording program is the non-GUI ffmpeg)?

  I'm developing an android app. It has multiple threads reading from and writing to the android SQLite db. I am receiving the following error: SQLiteException: error code 5: database is locked I understand the SQLite locks the entire db on inserting/updating, but these errors only seems to happen when inserting/updating while I'm running a select query. The select query returns a cursor which is being left open quite a wile (a few seconds some times) while I iterate over it. If the select query is not running, I never get the locks. I'm surprised that the select could be locking the db.... is this possible, or is something else going on? What's the best way to avoid such locks? Thanks TAO

• First iPhone App View Position Problem

  I am closely following the instructions given in the tutorial "Your First iPhone Application" on apple ADC. In the interface builder, I have set up a button positioned on the top according to the Apple Interface Guidelines. It runs without trouble if I simulate the interface in IB. However, if I run the built app, I get what is shown here. If you look at the view clearly, you will see that the entire view has been shifted up. And the magnitude of the shift is exactly the height of the status bar. And that's why the there is blank space at the bottom of the window, which was white instead of red. I have tried turning on the "Simulated Interface Elements", but that doesn't work either. The problem persists on real devices as well. However, using the "Simulate Interface" from IB looks fine. • Tips/tricks/gotchas for using System.Diagnostics.Process and Process.Start

  I've used Process.Start to shell out and call 7zip to archive stuff I've also used it to call ffmpeg to compress video files. That was a while ago..but I rememeber there was some issue about the pcocess stalling if you don't read off the standardoutput/error. I don't remember everything about it. Does anyone have experience using System.Diagnostics.Process for the purposes of initiating a long running process and waiting for it to finish? Thanks
