  • Exam 70-448 - TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance

    - by DigiMortal
The another exam I passed was 70-448 - TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance. This exam covers Business Intelligence (BI) solutions development and maintenance on SQL Server 2008 platform. It was not easy exam, but if you study then you can do it. To get prepared for 70-488 it is strongly recommended to read self-paced training kit and also make through all examples it contains. If you don’t have strong experiences on Microsoft BI platform and SQL Server then this exam is hard to pass when you just go there and hope to pass somehow. Self-paced training kit is interesting reading and you learn a lot of new stuff for sure when preparing for exam. Questions in exam are divided into topics as follows: SSIS – 32% SSAS – 38% SSRS – 30% Exam 70-448 gives you Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist certificate.

    - by marc dekeyser
Yes it has gone quiet again for the time being! As I am in training for Exchange 2013 and have the need to keep some customers happy (well, we all have to do something to earn our keep ;)) time to write blog posts or even work on my little side projects is limited. So for the time being there are no new blog posts coming but I’d like to tell you that you can expect posts on the following topics: * Automating lab server deployments (Using WDS and MDT 2012 RU1) * Scripts to automate application installations (and integration with the above) * Exchange 2013 posts * Exchange 2013 automation scripts (since I’m already seeing where I could do something here :P) As always, I’m still taking requests…

  • Great library of ASP.NET videos – Pluralsight!

    - by hajan
I have been subscribed to the Pluralsight website and of course since ASP.NET is my favorite development technology, I passed throughout few series of videos related to ASP.NET. You have list of ASP.NET galleries from Fundamentals to Advanced topics including the latest features of ASP.NET 4.0, ASP.NET Ajax, ASP.NET MVC etc. Most of the speakers are either Microsoft MVPs or known technology experts! I was really curious to see the way they have organized the entire course materials, and trust me, I was quite amazed. I saw the ASP.NET 4.0 video series to confirm my knowledge and some other video series regarding general software development concepts, design patterns etc. I would like to point out if anyone of you is interested to get FREE 1-week .NET training pass in the Pluralsight library, please CONTACT ME, write your name and email and include the purpose of the message in the content. I hope you will find this useful. Regards, Hajan

  • Design Book–Dimensional or No Dimensional, that is..the question

    - by drsql
So, it is right there in the title of the book “Relational Database Design” etc (the title is kinda long :)  But as I consider what to cover and, conversely, what not to cover, dimensional design inevitably pops up. So I am considering including it in the book. One thing I try to do is to cover topics to a level where you can start using it immediately, and I am not sure that I could get a deep enough coverage of the subject to do that. I don’t really feel like it has to be the definitive source...(read more)

  • Why Software Sucks...and What You Can Do About It – book review

    - by DigiMortal
How do our users see the products we are writing for them and how happy they are with our work? Are they able to get their work done without fighting with cool features and crashes or are they just switching off resistance part of their brain to survive our software? Yeah, the overall picture of software usability landscape is not very nice. Okay, it is not even nice. But, fortunately, Why Software Sucks...and What You Can Do About It by David S. Platt explains everything. Why Software Sucks… is book for software users but I consider it as a-must reading also for developers and specially for their managers whose politics often kills all usability topics as soon as they may appear. For managers usability is soft topic that can be manipulated the way it is best in current state of project. Although developers are not UI designers and usability experts they are still very often forced to deal with these topics and this is how usability problems start (of course, also designers are able to produce designs that are stupid and too hard to use for users, but this blog here is about development). I found this book to be very interesting and funny reading. It is not humor book but it explains you all so you remember later very well what you just read. It took me about three evenings to go through this book and I am still enjoying what I found and how author explains our weird young working field to end users. I suggest this book to all developers – while you are demanding your management to hire or outsource usability expert you are at least causing less pain to end users. So, go and buy this book, just like I did. And… they thanks to mr. Platt :) There is one book more I suggest you to read if you are interested in usability - Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition by Steve Krug. Editorial review from Amazon Today’s software sucks. There’s no other good way to say it. It’s unsafe, allowing criminal programs to creep through the Internet wires into our very bedrooms. It’s unreliable, crashing when we need it most, wiping out hours or days of work with no way to get it back. And it’s hard to use, requiring large amounts of head-banging to figure out the simplest operations. It’s no secret that software sucks. You know that from personal experience, whether you use computers for work or personal tasks. In this book, programming insider David Platt explains why that’s the case and, more importantly, why it doesn’t have to be that way. And he explains it in plain, jargon-free English that’s a joy to read, using real-world examples with which you’re already familiar. In the end, he suggests what you, as a typical user, without a technical background, can do about this sad state of our software—how you, as an informed consumer, don’t have to take the abuse that bad software dishes out. As you might expect from the book’s title, Dave’s expose is laced with humor—sometimes outrageous, but always dead on. You’ll laugh out loud as you recall incidents with your own software that made you cry. You’ll slap your thigh with the same hand that so often pounded your computer desk and wished it was a bad programmer’s face. But Dave hasn’t written this book just for laughs. He’s written it to give long-overdue voice to your own discovery—that software does, indeed, suck, but it shouldn’t. • What's a good open source java project for students to hack on?

    - by Evan Grim
I'm working with a professor to develop a course teaching practical software development tools and methodology. We're looking for a sample code base that we can use for hands-on experience in each of the topics and as the basis for a semester-long project where students will work in a team to implement a feature or fix bugs. Here are some basic guidelines for the project that we'd like to come close to meeting: java based, ~50K SLOC, uses ant, depends upon some external library, has a test suite (preferably jUnit), friendly for development within eclipse, actively developed with a substantial history available within a version control system (such as subversion), the more "coolness" factor the better (to motivate the students), and preferably with some kind of user interface (e.g.: not just a library).

While I plan to spend some of the indoor time working my way through the new 50th anniversary James Bond box set, I will also devote some time to improve my mind rather than my martini-mixing skills by catching up on my reading. If you are in a similar situation, you might want to spend some of your time with these new technical books written by our community members: Oracle SOA Suite 11g Administrator's Handbook by Ahmed Aboulnaga and Arun Pareek Oracle SOA Suite 11g Developer's Cookbook by Antony Oracle BPM Suite 11g: Advanced BPMN Topics by Mark Nelson and Tanya Williams SOA & BPM Partner Community For regular information on Oracle SOA Suite become a member in the SOA & BPM Partner Community for registration please visit  www.oracle.com/goto/emea/soa (OPN account required) If you need support with your account please contact the Oracle Partner Business Center. • Web Development Trends: Mobile First, Data-Oriented Development, and Single Page Applications

    - by dwahlin
I recently had the opportunity to give a keynote talk at an Intel conference about key trends in the world of Web development that I feel teams should be taking into account with projects. It was a lot of fun and I had the opportunity to talk with a lot of different people about projects they’re working on. There are a million things that could be covered for this type of talk (HTML5 anyone?) but I only had 60 minutes and couldn’t possibly cover them all so I decided to focus on 3 key areas: mobile, data-oriented development, and SPAs. The talk was geared toward introducing people (many who weren’t Web developers) to topics such as mobile first development (demos showed a few tools to help here), responsive design techniques, data binding techniques that can simplify code, and Single Page Application (SPA) benefits. Links to code demos shown during the presentation can be found at the end of the slide deck. Web Development Trends - What's New in the World of Web Development by Dan Wahlin

  • Can my ikmnet test results say something about career choice I should take?

    - by Nicke
I took 2 tests via ikmnet and scored 70 % on SQL and 65 % on Java. While not bad, it can be improved. The subskills I need to improve according to the test are interfaces and inheritance, compilation and deployment, flow control, The java.lang package and "Java Program Construction" and these topics seems rather broad to me. Rather than just learning by programming, could you advice me to take a certification, follow a course or otherwise improve my skills? By the way, I enjoy python more than Java so should I market myself more of a python programmer or even a role that some companies search for which seems like a system developer with more technical writing where the title is system analysts (evaluating systems in cooperation with management rather than programming.) Thank you for any comment and/or answer.
