• Abstract Factory Method and Polymorphism

  Being a PHP programmer for the last couple of years, I'm just starting to get into advanced programming styles and using polymorphic patterns. I was watching a video on polymorphism the other day, and the guy giving the lecture said that if at all possible, you should get rid of if statements in your code, and that a switch is almost always a sign that polymorphism is needed. At this point I was quite inspired and immediately went off to try out these new concepts, so I decided to make a small caching module using a factory method. Of course the very first thing I have to do is create a switch to decide what file encoding to choose. As far as I can tell, I either have to use a different pattern and have separate methods for each object instance, or accept that a switch is necessary to "switch" between them. • Herding Cats - That's My Job....

I remember turning to the people I was watching the game with and telling them, “You just watched my job description”. Releasing software is a multi-facetted undertaking. In addition to making sure the code changes are complete, you also need to make sure the other key parts of a release are ready. For example when you have a question about the software, will the person on the other end of the phone be ready to answer your question? If you need training on that cool new piece of functionality, will there be an online training course ready for you to review? If you want to read about how the software is supposed to function, is there a user manual available? Putting all the release pieces together so they are available at the same time is what the JD Edwards Program Management team does. It is my team’s job to work with all the different functional teams so when a release is made generally available you have all the things you need to be successful. The JD Edwards Program Management team uses an internal planning tool called the Release Process Model (RPM) to ensure all deliverables are accounted for in a release. The RPM makes sure all the release deliverables are ready at the correct time and in the correct format. The RPM really helps all the functional teams in JD Edwards know what release deliverables they are accountable for and when they are to be delivered. It is my team’s job to make sure everyone understands what they need to do and when they need to deliver. We then make sure they are all on track to deliver on-time and in the right format. It is just that some days this feels like herding cats.

• Kindle App for WP7 arrives

  If you had asked me if I was interested in owning a Kindle device, then my response a couple months back would have been a flat out no back then. So what has changed between now on then you might be asking me then? I would have to say watching my wife enjoy the many books in digital form has peeked my interest to start with now. Was that enough for me to buy a Kindle though? Not just yet, but that is where the Windows Phone 7 comes in for me once again. It’s no secret that I’ve wanted this device and yes it does have a number of Apps that I think I’ll really enjoy. The latest must have App for me, will most certainly be the Kindle App for Windows Phone 7, released from Amazon today. I’ve already started playing around with the PC version of Kindle software and I’m looking at purchasing any future books in digital form now. So it’s a given once I have a Windows Phone 7 device, that I’ll be enjoying some of my favorite books, while I’m on the go I think and via this App. Tonight I actually had a chance to check out the WP7 Kindle App on a friends device and I was really pleased with how it looked and performed. Now if the planets could only manage to lineup for me and allow Verizon and Microsoft to come to terms on the releasing of WP7 CDMA devices, I just might be able to really enjoy some of this on my own. Do I rule out ever having an actual Kindle device? Not at all, but I do plan on having the WP7 device well before that day ever comes though.

• Building a complete program?

  Reading books, watching videos, and reviewing tutorials is all very easy. Taking notes and actually learning the material may be slightly harder, but even then, anyone with a decent brain and a fair amount of interest, it's easy enough (not to mention, fun). The thing is, it doesn't really prepare you to write a full program or website. Let's say you're those teens (only in highschool, no true (college level) computer science or programming courses, and no real world experience), and you come out with Groupon. Or even Mark Zuckerburg, sure he was a genius, and he was a very capable programmer... but how? How do you recommend that people who are not necessarily new to programming, but new to programming real applications and real programmers go about developing it? What is the "development process" - especially for single programmers (or maybe 2-3 teens)? Also, as far as web development goes, what is the process? Was something like Facebook or Groupon written with a framework (like CodeIgniter or Zend for PHP)? Or do they develop their own frameworks? I'm not asking how to come up with a great idea, but how to implement great ideas in an effective way? Does anyone have advice? I've read a couple of books on both C and C++ (primarily the C Programming Language and the C++ Programming Language) and taken AP Computer Science (as well as read a few additional books on Java and OOP). I also have read a few tutorials on PHP (and CodeIgniter) and Python. But I'm still in highschool, and I'm technically not even old enough to work at an internship for a few more months.

• External display resolution issue

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I've 'dabbled' in the past but Windows was annoying me too much so I finally made the change. One thing I use my laptop for is outputting the screen onto an external monitor. In Windows this usually works fine (but when there is an issue, it's a pain to resolve and has crashed my computer on many occasions). In Ubuntu it's a very simple case of "plug and play" because it displays the content immediately with no major problems. However, I can only alter the resolution of the external display to 4:3 formats, whereas the external monitor is 16:9, so the picture is stretched. In Windows there's loads of resolutions to choose from. If I disable the laptop's screen, it still doesn't allow me to display the correct resolution externally (on VGA). Further to that, if I close the laptop it keeps the external screen as it is, but when I reopen the laptop, the laptop screen doesn't turn back on until I restart. If it's a video I am watching, I can use VLC to alter the aspect ratio so the video looks fine, but it's quite an annoying work around. I used terminal to find my graphics controller, which is "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)" (not great, I know... the laptop was a free gift with my mobile!) Any idea of how I can get the resolution on the external monitor to be correct?

• why doesn't my computer resume after sleeping overnight?

  i'm having a weird, weird bug that's been haunting me since 11.10. if i listen to music or watch a video and my computer automatically goes to sleep at night, it won't properly resume in the morning. otherwise, suspend and resume works just fine. what happens is that the wi-fi and bluetooth indicator (that turns from white to orange when suspending) stays orange, the display doesn't turn on, and the only option i have is to hard reset the machine. here's what i've tried so far: installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling) laptop-mode-tools switching the proprietary wireless driver (broadcom-wl) to the open source one (brcmsmac & bcma) and back unloading (and blacklisting) all bluetooth modules (rfcomm, btusb, bnep, bluetooth) and stopping (# stop bluetooth) and disabling (# echo 'manual' /etc/init/bluetooth.override) the bluetooth service creating a custom pm sleep action as suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11926504 not watching youtube / any stuff that uses flash before going to sleep (i have flashblock, and i checked $ ps aux | grep flash) because i suspected flash to be the culprit trying out different versions of fglrx (the one from the repos, then installing the latest one from amd's site via generated .deb files, then back to the official ones) none of these worked. i remember back in the days of 10.04, there was a gconf key called network sleep: i thought about disabling that, since re-enabling the wireless card seems to be the problem (according to the indicator led), but the option appears to be missing from gnome 3 (unity-2d, whatever). does anyone have any ideas? thanks, bamdad

• Consecutive verse Parallel Nunit Testing

  My office has roughly ~300 webpages that should be tested on a fairly regular basis. I'm working with Nunit, Selenium, and C# in Visual Studio 2010. I used this framework as a basis, and I do have a few working tests. The problem I'm running into is is that when I run the entire suite. In each run, a random test(s) will fail. If they're run individually, they will all pass. My guess is that Nunit is trying to run all 7 tests at the same time and the browser can't support this for obvious reasons. Watching the browser visually, this does seem to be the case. • Wireless connection disconnects and reconnects with a Netgear WNA1000

  Ever since I made the permanent switch from Vista to Ubuntu i've had wireless connectivity problems. From watching the network manager when it disconnects it seems like it turns off the receiver for some reason. Could it be bad drivers? I used their install software and the site doesn't really offer driver downloads. The adapter is a Netgear WNA1000 if memory serves, and I don't know much about the router except that it's a Motorola Surfboard.   I operate a small company that charges $99 for a piece of software. I'd like to know what would be a fair price for non-US customers. Today I sold a license to a party in South Africa. He told me he had been watching the project for two years while business justification could be made for the purchase as SA's currency is nine times weaker than the US dollar. I am aware that many software companies charge prices in local currencies that equate to the price in US dollars. I am aware that my costs remain fixed, and I obviously I cannot discount the rate at which my time costs me. I'm OK with earning less per sale as I would rather get my software onto the desktops of those that need it rather than having them try to write it themselves. Support is light and I can usually point a user to an existing blog or forum post. Being a resident of Hawaii, I am aware that certain goods and services cost more here. Power is up to six times as much per KWH as it is in, say, Seattle, and wages are approximately 60% of what they are for my profession (programmer). I'd like to offer my software at a price that would be fair for everyone around the globe. If a currency is 2 foreign units to 1 US dollar, and goods and services cost 50% more and pay for an equivalent job is 50% of what it is here, should I charge, say, $50 instead of $99? Is there a resource which would allow me to input a price in US dollars and adjust for a list of international locations?

• Multiple Issues - USB booting Ubuntu 12.04

  I've been using a Ubuntu 12.04 off a bootable USB stick so I can have a portable OS. Also, OS variety. I've been using it for a while and I'm still have a few issues. First and most annoying, it often lags/freezes. I'm not sure what word you would use for it, windows will often stop working and go dark/not responding from anywhere between 10 seconds to a full minute and on some occasions, even longer. However, the window eventually starts working again. Similarly, sometimes the whole system will freeze, not just the window. The mouse will still move, but nothing will work. No clicking, no menus, not keyboard shortcuts. Again, it will usually start working. I'm liking Ubuntu a lot, but those issues can make it annoying to use sometimes. For example, it will ALWAYS freeze at some point if I try to watching a Youtube video and I'll have to wait for a minute or so until it starts responding, again. Aside from the lag/freezing, anytime I download packages, it will always say "package operation failed" when it's done, though it does seem to download/install. Another issue I'm having is with shutting down. If I open the logout/shutdown menu and click shutdown, it just logs me out and takes me to the login screen. If I try shutting down through the login screen, it won't do anything. As if I didn't even go to it. I've been using the terminal to reboot or shutdown when I need to. I've looked around for answers for all of these problems and still have yet to find a solution that works. Are these just normal issues with USB booting? I haven't installed Ubuntu to any computers, I've always done USB booting.

• DVD wont mount Ubuntu 12.04

  I can't seem to be able to mount my optical drive. I have tried numerous solutions from this site with no results. I am not able to see the device inside the file browser either. There is a DVD in the drive. I am running 12.04 on an HP g60-235dx portable. I have a link below to the specs. I will also list what I have tried (that I can find back right now.) I know the drive is functioning, because just before Windows 7 crashed and my MBR went fubar I was watching movies just fine. I am fairly new to linux, so don't assume I know anything. • Two Sessions All Humans Should Watch Right Now

  At conferences, I definitely prefer technical sessions over any other kind of session. That's partly because I want to walk away from a conference with new libraries and APIs to play with, such as the AT&T ARO tool that I've been blogging about over the past few days thanks to being introduced to it in a great session by Doug Sillars at Oredev, in Malmo, Sweden. I only say the above to set the scene. And the scene is that I avoid sessions that deal with "agile topics" or whatever that means. I mean those sessions where you're meant to reflect on some way you're developing nothing in particular and then come away with new ways of doing that. I avoid those. Not because I don't necessarily like those or think I have nothing to learn, both of which I don't (or do, depending on how you read double negatives), but because there are so many sessions to attend that I focus on those that actually give me more technical knowledge that I can do something with immediately. Having said all that, here's two absolutely wonderful sessions (and probably many more but I really liked these two) presented at Oredev over the last few days, one by JB Rainsberger and the other by Woody Zuill, both very nice people who I met for the first time during the last few days, and who aren't paying me to promote them, and who're still struggling to figure out how to say my name. Whether you're a developer or manager or whatever you are, take this on trust, and simply watch these screencasts, hey, at most you're going to lose two hours of your life that you would've spent doing something else: Speaking for myself, I'm going to be watching both these presentations again several times in my life, that's for sure.

• Drupal migration failed

  First of all, I'm new to Drupal and the work I have to do is some kind of too hard. My old colleague (webmaster) had a server with a multisite Drupal 6 installation. Sites and their dirs were (e.g.) Sites Site directory b.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/b.a.mycompany.com c.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/c.a.mycompany.com d.a.mycompany.com /drupal_install_dir/sites/d.a.mycompany.com Unluckily my colleague moved and server hdd aren't in my hands: all I have is a backup of /drupal_install_dir and three sql dumps (one for each site). I had to restore three sites, but changing them as z.mycompany.com/b z.mycompany.com/c z.mycompany.com/d Beeing a sysadmin, I Extracted tar.gz backup file under wwwroot (let's call full path to extracted directory /new_install_dir) Restored three databases Created mysql users and give them correct GRANTS on databases Then (trying to restore at least first site) I changed /new_install_dir/sites/settings.php putting correct database connection data and new basepath. But there is no way I can see my new site, simply it doesn't work. Watching /var/log/apache2/error.log I saw Drupal searching for main drupal database; so I created that db too setting user and grants, but dump file is empty. Well, now I can run something like install.php or update.php, but my site is not shown. Is there something I can do? Do I have to walk another way? Consider I searched the web, but I'm not able to find a guide that can help me for my problem. Ah, I forgot: before producing the backup, my colleague set site in maintenance mode. When I try to run z.mycompany.com/?q=user (trying to login) nothing happens. I'm really stuck...

• How "commercially savvy" should software developers be? [closed]

  I have been watching answers to many questions on this site, and have come to the conclusion that commercial pragmatism does not factor into many software development discussions. As a result, I seriously wonder at the commercial skills within the industry, specifically the ability to deliver projects on time and to a budget. I see no indication from the site that commercially successful project delivery is a serious concern, yet the industry has a reputation for poor performance in this. Rarely, if ever, does the cost of time factor into discussions. I have never seen concepts such as opportunity cost, time to market, competitive advantage or cash flow mentioned, let alone discussed in technical answers to questions. How can you answer virtually any question without understanding the commercial background on which it is asked? Even Open source projects have a need to operate efficiently and deploy their limited resources to providing the most value for effort. Typically small start-ups have cash flow issues that outweigh longevity concerns, yet they are typically still advised to build for a future they probably won’t have if they do. Is it fair to say that these problems are solely the Managers and Project managers to solve, or are we, as developers, also responsible for ensuring successful on time, within budget delivery of projects, even if those budgets do not allow use to achieve engineering excellence?

• Android: Not able to experiment on own?

  I have just started learning Android App Development a few days ago, with prior knowledge of C/C++, HTML and CSS. This is the situation I am facing Repeatedly: I am learning from a Video Tutorial Series, after each video, or each few videos, I say myself: Let's use what I have just learnt in the simple (and also "meaningless") app that I have made so far by watching the tutorials. I start implementing it, but then after a few minutes, I realize that I cannot do it because I do not know a few other syntax related to the particular thing, (or) I do not know whether these things can be combined with these other things by the use of . (dot). Whatever I try, I get either an error in eclipse or "Sorry...the app com.example.simple has stopped unexpectedly...." when the app runs. Then I search StackOverflow, Google and learn that what I want to implement requires learning about a few more classes, syntax and creating a few more java classes. I am not able to experiment on my own. Is it normal? Is it the HARD-WAY in which one is supposed to learn? Should I first learn Java and then come back to Android - would that be helpful?

• How do I force the system to look for new sound devices?

  I have a small flat screen TV (Toshiba) that I often connect via HDMI to my laptop (an HP Pavilion dv4) and use as a computer monitor. When I do this, I prefer to use the TV's speakers, particularly when I'm watching video, because the sound quality is much better. However, when I connect the HDMI cable after turning on my computer (rather than having it plugged in before booting up), Sound Settings does not list the TV as an output device, and I am forced to reboot. I was curious if there is an easier solution to this, perhaps a CLI command to check for new sound outputs. Does anyone know of something like this or have another solution? To clarify, I believe this is a software problem. The HDMI always works, and I can switch my desktop over to the TV at any time. The issue is that, if the HDMI wasn't connected during start up, the TV will not appear as an output option in the Sound Settings GUI. So, unless I'm mistaken, my question is not HDMI specific, but rather a general usage question about manipulating sound settings from the command line.

• Java single Array best choice for accessing pixels for manipulation?

  I am just watching this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwUnMy_pR6A and the guy (who seems to be pretty competent) is using a single array to store and access the pixels of his to-be-rendered image. I was wondering if this really is the best way to do this. The alternative of Multi-Array does have one pointer more, but Arrays do have an O(1) for accessing each index and calculating the index in a single array seems to take one addition and one multiplication operation per pixel. And if Multi-Arrays really are bad, can't you use something with Hashing to avoid those addition and multiplication operations? • Xenserver 5.5 U2 a bit unstable with an unstable W2003 VM

  In the last week I had to reboot the host system twice and the second one by means of the power button. The system is a Dell PE 6950 (4 Opteron dual core, 2,8 Ghz, 16 GB RAM, 900 GB disk in a RAID 10 array composed by 4 450GB 15000 rpm disks) with XenServer 5.5 U2. We're installing it and at now there are working in production a 2003 32 bit Windows server VM with 2 GB RAM, 3 vcpu and about 200 GB disk in 4 partition (12 GB boot, 20 GB program, 80 GB user data, 80 GB other data). The first time I was compressing many Windows 2003 folders (some tens GB by means of W2003 compressed folder option) from a Windows remote console and some hours before my colleague installed Backup Exec agent that was alredy installed and that required a reboot (that was pending). The console stopped responding, it was no more possible to connect by means of remote console or by means of the console of the XenCentre, it was still possible from the network to use the shared folder of the VM and the programs on it (2 db and a GIS program), but the print server didn't work any more and I couldn't give remote reboot from other domain controller hosts. I couldn't stop the virtual machine neither from the XenCentre, neither from the command line of the host also forcing the reboot. I had to reboot the host server. Yesterday it has been worst. I installed a template of another VM, CentOS 5.3 and then, put the DVD in the drive of the host. Then, before the install and after the boot I checked for defect the DVD and the W2003 VM began to respond slowly (I was connected by means of an administration remote console) the task manager showed only mid or low load, it is, only the first of the 3 vcpu was loaded (about 70%), while the other two were about at 20% and also the disk I/O was not so heavy. Then the users were not so happy because they couldn't any more use the MS word docs on the server. I immediately stopped the check of the DVD (to do that I had to force the stop of such Centos 5.3 VM), then some users could again use their docs, but other had still problems, so I decided to reboot the VM, but it doesn't stopped, neither from XenCenter, neither from command line, neither forcing the reboot. Then I tried to reboot of the host, but it didn't worked, neither from the XenCentre, neither from the host prompt (shutdown -r now as root: it told that it was shutting down, but then it didn't did that). So I had to power off by means of the power button of the server (before I tried some Magic SyS REQ, but I saw that Xen isn't compiled with this option enabled). What could you suggest about my problem, what can I look, search and see? In the W2003 VM logs there are no errors or warning to explain what happened. • How can I Setup overloaded method invocations in Moq?

  I'm trying to mock a mapping interface IMapper: public interface IMapper<TFoo, TBar> { TBar Map(TFoo foo); TFoo Map(TBar bar); } In my test, I'm setting the mock mapper up to expect an invocation of each (around an NHibernate update operation): //... _mapperMock.Setup(m => m.Map(fooMock.Object)).Returns(barMock.Object); _mapperMock.Setup(m => m.Map(barMock.Object)).Returns(fooMock.Object); //... However, when the second Map invocation is made, the mapper mock throws because it is only expecting a single invocation. Watching the mapper mock during setup at runtime, I can look see the Map(TFoo foo) overload get registered, and then see it get replaced when the Map(TBar bar) overload is set up. Is this a problem with the way Moq handles setup, or is there a different syntax I need to use in this case?

• How to set foreground Window from Powershell event subscriber action

  I have a FileSystemWatcher instance running in the background of my PoSh session watching for changes to text files. A PoSh event subscriber is attached to this event and, when fired, it launches a console program by calling Start-Process. This program steals de focus from the current foreground window (my PoSh console). Calling SetForegroundWindow from the PoSh event subscriber to return the focus to my PoSh console doesn't work. SwitchToThisWindow does work most of the time, but according to the MSDN docs, it shoulnd't be used. Can I prevent Start-Process from stealing the focus in this situation or set it back from the event subscriber to the window that had it before this event is fired?

  I’ve just enabled config transformations on a .NET 3.5 project in VS2010 RC after watching Scott Hanselman’s video on web deployment. Unfortunately every time I go to publish I now get the following error: The "TransformXml" task failed unexpectedly. System.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The URI is empty. at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind) at System.Uri..ctor(String uriString) at Microsoft.Web.Publishing.Tasks.TransformXml.Execute() at Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.TaskExecutionHost.Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.ITaskExecutionHost.Execute() at Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.TaskBuilder.ExecuteInstantiatedTask(ITaskExecutionHost taskExecutionHost, TaskLoggingContext taskLoggingContext, TaskHost taskHost, ItemBucket bucket, TaskExecutionMode howToExecuteTask, Boolean& taskResult) If I take a brand new VS2010 web application which already has the config transformations by default I don’t have a problem so I suspect my issue is project related. Has anyone come across this before or have any ideas on a fix?

• Screencasts vs Articles - which do you prefer?

  Recently, I've noticed that I've lost all patience with programming articles, and started watching screencasts instead. For example, the ASP.NET MVC site had lots of screencasts, so I watched those and got coding in no time. I was therefore wondering what the community thinks about screencasts and articles, particularly as I'm considering contributing material, and am pondering the format.
