• Oracle Database Security Protecting the Oracle IRM Schema

  Acquiring the Information Rights Management technology in 2006 was part of Oracle's strategic security vision and IRM compliments nicely the overall Oracle security set of solutions. A year ago I spoke about how Oracle has solutions that can help companies protect information throughout its entire life cycle. With our acquisition of Sun this set of solutions has solidified and has even extended down to the operating system and hardware level. Oracle can now offer customers technology that protects their data from the disk, through the database to documents on the desktop! With the recent release of Oracle IRM 11g I was tasked to configure demonstration and evaluation environments and I thought it would make a nice story to leverage some of the security features in the latest release of the Oracle Database. After building these environments I thought I would put together a simple video demonstrating how both Database Advanced Security and Information Rights Management combined can provide a very secure platform for protecting your information. Have a look at the following which highlights these database security options.Transparent Data Encryption protecting the communication from the Oracle IRM server to the Database server. Encryption techniques provide confidentiality and integrity of the data passing to and from the IRM service on the back end. Transparent Data Encryption protecting the Oracle IRM database schema. Encryption is used to provide confidentiality of the IRM data whilst it resides at rest in the database table space. Database Vault is used to ensure only the Oracle IRM service has access to query and update the information that resides in the database. This is an excellent method of ensuring that database administrators cannot look at or make changes to the Oracle IRM database whilst retaining their ability to administrate the database. The last thing you want after deploying an IRM solution is for a curious or unhappy DBA to run a query that grants them rights to your company financial data or documents pertaining to a merger or acquisition.

• Copyrights concerning code snippets and larger amounts of code

  I am designing a public code repository. Users will be allowed to post and edit whatever amount of code they want, from code snippets to entire multi-file projects. I have a few major legal concerns about this: Not getting sued/shut down - I feel the site would be a much easier target than tracking down an individual user to sue. I have looked around a bit and see links to legal info in the footer of each page is common. What specific things should I do--and what does does a site such as YouTube (which I see copyrighted material on all the time) do--for protection? Citing sources and editing sourced code - If a user wants to post code that isn't theirs, what concerns/safeguards should I have? Will a link suffice, and what do I need further to allow the code to be edited (to improve it for example)? What can happen if a user posts copyrighted code without citing it? Large chunks of code - What legal differences should I look out for as the amount grows? Not having a mess of licenses for the site - I would like to have a single license (like RosettaCode) that keeps things simple for interaction on the site. I want the code to be postable and editable. I have looked into StackOverflow's CreativeCommons license a little and it says that If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one. And on RosettaCode: All software found on Rosetta Code should be considered potentially hazardous. Use at your own risk. Be aware that all code on Rosetta Code is under the GNU Free Documentation License, as are any edits made by contributors. See Rosetta Code:Copyrights for details. What other licenses are like this? Commercializing the site - In what ways can I and can't I make money off of a site that contains code like this? All code will be publicly visible. Initial thoughts are having ads or making money by charging for advanced features.

• Outstanding Silverlight User Group Meeting last night

  We had a great Silverlight User Group Meeting in Phoenix last night! Before I go any farther I want to say thanks again to David Silverlight and Kim Schmidt for coming to talk to us! And not to forget Victor Gaudioso over the wire :) David, Kim, and Victor talked to us about the Silverlight User Group Starter Kit they are working on with an extended stellar list of talented developers. Don't bypass looking at this by thinking it's only for a User Group... this is a solid community-supported full-up application using MVVM and Ria Services that you could take and modify for your own use. Take a look at the list of developers. Chances are you know some of them... send them an email of thanks for all the hard work over the last year! David and Kim discussed the architecture and code, demonstrating features as they went. Then Victor came in through the application itself on a high-intensity live webcast from his home in California. The audience of about 15 seemed focused and interested which says a lot about the subject and presentation. Tim Heuer came bearing some gifts (swag) ... a hard-copy of Josh Smith's Advanced MVVM , and couple cheaply upgradeable copies of VS2008 Pro that were snatched up very quickly. We also gave away a few copies of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, some Arc mice, and some Office 2007 disks... so I don't think anyone left empty-handed. Personal thanks from me go out to Mike Palermo and Tim Heuer for the surprise they had waiting for me that's been over Twitter, and to Victor for only mentioning it at least 3 times in a 5-minute webcast.   Google Chrome’s default search engine is Google. This makes perfect sense; the only problem is that it uses localized Google – for example, Google France or Google Israel. This impacts the interface language, and sometimes even the text orientation. Here’s how you can fix this and get “international” Google results with an English interface. First, we need to figure out what search query we’re going to use. Go to Google.com and execute a simple query for a single word – say “cats”. If you get real-time results, hit Enter so that the address bar updates with the query URL. The idea behind the “Microsoft Mondays” program is to help you become more proficient in the products and technologies that you use and help you utilize their full potential.   Test Driven Development in Visual Studio 2010 Level – 300 (  Intermediate – Advanced ) Test Driven Development (TDD), also frequently referred to as Test Driven Design, is a development methodology where developers create software by first writing a unit test, then writing the actual system code to make the unit test pass.  The unit test can be viewed as a small specification around how the system should behave; writing it first helps the developer to focus on only writing enough code to make the test pass, thereby helping ensure a tight, lightweight system which is specifically focused meeting on the documented requirements. TDD follows a cadence of “Red, Green, Refactor.” Red refers to the visual display of a failing test – the test you write first will not pass because you have not yet written any code for it. Green refers to the step of writing just enough code in your system to make your unit test pass – your test runner’s UI will now show that test passing with a green icon. Refactor refers to the step of refactoring your code so it is tighter, cleaner, and more flexible. This cycle is repeated constantly throughout a TDD developer’s workday. It takes a bit of navigating to get there, so bear with me: Tools Database SQL Formatter Oracle Formatting Click ‘Edit’ on the profile Other Case change: ‘Keywords Uppercase’ It’s easy to find once you know where to look? You can tell it to leave the case alone, upper everything, upper only the keywords, lower everything. Accessing the Formatter Options We allow separate formatting options for different RDBMS. You need to make sure you’re accessing the ‘Oracle Formatting’ page in the preferences. You can then choose to edit the default options OR you can do what I have done – save the defaults as a new set of options. I’ve called my profile ‘JeffCustom.’ I can now switch back and forth now through different sets of formatting options. You need to hit the ‘Edit’ button to get to the formatting options editor. • You Can't Win on Price

  This year I did the majority of my Christmas shopping from the comfort of my home office. There aren't many things in stores you can't find online these days. I find it easier to search, research, and compare products online rather than walking the mall anyway. But there's a segment of the population that likes to be in the store, touching the products. For those people, smartphones avail them some of the e-commerce features I mentioned right there in the aisles. First it was RedLaser, then TheFind, ShopSavvy and many others. But the one that should be scaring retailers is Amazon's PriceCheck application. It lets you scan the product barcode, take a picture of the product, or speak the product's name. Once the product is identified, it shows the online prices, with Amazon at the top of the list. Within 10 seconds you can order the item and Amazon Prime members get free 2-day shipping too. I don't think fashion and grocery retailers need to worry much, but I have to believe smartphones are helping Amazon win a little more of the brand-name hardgoods market. So what's a retailer to do? Best Buy has begun to put QR Codes on their shelf labels that are easily scanned by smartphones and take the consumer to a Best Buy Web page where they can get extended information about the product. The consumer is getting the additional information they want, and Best Buy avoids the price comparisons. Of course if a consumer chooses to use the Amazon PriceCheck app, then all bets are off. That's when Best Buy has to hope the in-store experience and customer service will save the sale. My point is that the internet makes information available to everyone, and smartphones make it available anywhere. Unless you want your store to be Amazon's local showroom, you need to be price-competitive but differentiate on other aspects of the shopping experience. With the cost of running a physical store, you can't win on price.

• NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? • The Other "C" in CRM

  Folks who know me know that I rarely, if ever, talk politics. And I never talk politicians. Having grown up in a household with one parent leaning left and the other leaning to the right it was the best way to keep the peace. This isn't about politics. It's about "constituents" and the need to improve the services and service levels for people--at the city, county, state/province, etc. level all the way up to national governments. As a citizen and tax payer it's also important to me that these services be provided at a reasonable cost. If there's a better and more efficient way to do something then it's my hope that a public sector organization takes advantage of technology the same way private sector companies do. Social services organizations have a complex job. They provide the services that people need, from healthcare and children's assistance to helping people find jobs. But many of these organizations are still managing these processes manually or outdated, home-grown applications that could have been written up to 30 years ago. A lot has changed in technology. On the (this is as political as I'm going to get) political front, stakeholders like you and me are expecting greater transparency on where and how funds are spent. I'll admit that most of the time, when I think about CRM systems, I think about my experience as a customer of my bank, utilities company or cable operator. But now that I'm older, have children and a house--I find myself interacting more and more with agencies and services organizations. My experiences are sometimes good and sometimes not so good. Along those lines, last week's announcement of Siebel CRM 8.2 for Public Sector caught my eye. You may not work in the public sector, but you are a constituent of some--actually a lot--of public sector organizations. I don't know which CRM systems city and county utilize but I'm going to start paying closer attention.

• Unable to install Win XP nor Win 7 after installing Ubuntu 11.1

  I'll try to make this scenario as clear as possible. Laptop Specs HP dv6-2189la: 500 HDD 4GB Ram Intel i7 Personal Specs - Linux newbie running for the first time. Quite confused :( I had Windows 7 x64, decided to start fresh new so I planned on formatting. Since I use it for work and didn't require it for another week, I didn't rush into installing Win 7 immediately as I wanted to try Ubuntu for quite a while. 1) Downloaded Ubuntu 11.1 2) Burned ISO to CD 3) Installed Ubuntu using the full HDD of 500GB erasing Win7 4) Ubuntu ran awesome (especially for me being a Linux Newbie from scratch) I used Ubuntu for a while, but now I need to get back to work with Win 7. Tried running the installation CD for Win 7 and it just skips to Ubuntu without loading. Checked BIOS, tried other discs, even tried the disc on another computer and it works. Since that didn't work, I tried running Win XP. This CD does load, it starts loading files, drives, kernel, blah blah and before even getting to install it Blue screens with error 0x0000007b. I already used Gparted and created up to 250 GB space for Windows. Formatted to NTFS. I really don´t know what do now. I've tried almost everything I know within my knowledge. I could say I'm an advanced PC user, but I bumped into the Linux wall starting from scratch. All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!
