• Ubuntu 12.10 + Windows 7 - No option to install alongside windows 7

  I have a 64-bit Windows 7 OS installed at the moment. I have used GPartEd to shrink the current Windows 7 partition on my 720GB HDD to 200GB. I have then made a new NTFS partition of 200GB which I will keep for later on as a shared drive between both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. So in GPartEd I now have 3 partitions which were all automatically there from the Windows 7 installation, I only shrank the 3rd one from the 698GB or so that it was to 200GB and created the 200GB for the shared drive. I first tried creating another 200GB partition at this stage to install Ubuntu too but when I burnt the DVD and loaded it, Ubuntu gave me no option to install alongside Windows, only the option to erase the entire disk and install Ubuntu on the blank drive...not what I want to do. So I tried installing it through clicking 'Something else', it downloaded all the install files but didn't install. I then had a lot of problems with getting the DVD drive to work and what not but now have this fixed so I can use Windows again. So now I've used GPartEd to delete the partitions so again I'm now left with the 3 partitions there which Windows 7 automatically installs and a 200GB NTFS partition I will later use as a shared drive. Booting up from the Ubuntu disc and again there is no option to install alongside Windows 7. How do I get it to do so? All I would like is Windows 7 and Ubuntu on a dual boot, with a 200GB NTFS partition to dump my work onto so that I can access it from both OS's. Thanks.

• Ubuntu installation on Windows , I can't find my way back.

  So recently I have installed Ubuntu as an OS in addition to my Windows because it looked good and I have used it in the past and I liked it. Before I installed Ubuntu, they (the website) have given me a help list that shows that I will have the option of having Windows aside to Ubuntu (dual install), while I work with the Ubuntu OS. They told me that if I either put it in a CD or USB drive, I'll be okay. So there I was, installing Ubuntu, saving the Ubuntu file on my USB drive first, then afterwards clicking it and therefore proceeded to install. The problem is once I installed Ubuntu, it directed me to the 'login' page without giving me an option for dual-installing (you know, the language portion and so on). Now I tried both to suspend and shut off, and it seems like I cannot access my Windows files/account anymore and it really is unfortunate. Now I am FREAKING out, because this is a shared computer that my family uses (it's like a main computer in the house) and everyone's files are on this. It is extremely crucial for me to get these Windows files back because if I don't, my life will end tonight. Please, if someone can help me, I will love you forever. Please just help me, this is urgent. I'm sure a lot of people have experienced this too, but I have found nothing on the website helpful for me as Ubuntu is a very new thing for me. • Is dual boot via wake on lan possible?

  Is it possible to set up a PC so it can Wake on Lan and then have the option of which OS to boot into? I want to have a secondary PC with Windows and a *nix variant installed. I want the PC to be in a remote room so I can connect via a wireless hub to it and then boot it up as and when required and choose which OS to boot into. If it is possible how would I go about it? Any recommendations on how to do it or where I can get more info on how to do it? Thanks.. Ian

• How to check system performance?

  Hi all, I am a new Ubuntu user and really like the look and the features of the OS. However, I have a feeling that the performance could be better. With that I mean: Somehow the scrolling within firefox of sites seems laggy. I do not know how I should measure it but there is a difference. Not that it is unusable but it is aggravating. Java programs are running really slow. As a comparison (I know it is not a fair one), I tried to run a game using wine. The graphic specifications using windows were much higher (1600x1200) with a high level of detail, and in ubuntu with the lowest level of detail 1024x768 was the maximum. (My graphics card is a GeForce GTS 450 with 1gb RAM) Coming to my question: Is there a way to measure the performance of 3D acceleration, java applets, firefox scrolling etc. with a tool and compare it with lets say a windows OS or other users having almost the same hardware? Maybe it is a setup issue where some fundamental drivers are missing or something!? Any help, link, suggestion is appreciated! Cherio Woltan

• Order files in Ubuntu server in alpha order?

  I have a PHP script that is for personal use that goes through a folder and lists all the pictures in the folder. The pictures are pages from a book, so it is important that they be in order. They are named so that in alphabetical order, they are also in the correct page order. I had it running on my Mac OS server, and it worked fine, listing them in order because Mac OS apparently keeps files alphabetically. Now, since I've switched to Ubuntu, it is listing them in a seemingly random order. Is there any way to order files in Ubuntu server so that they are in alphabetical order?

• Create bootable partition from image

  I have a Macbook Pro with a dead CD drive. I don't have easy access to a replacement drive. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I can't get the MBP to recognize a USB stick as a bootable media (I believe MBP's have issues with booting from USB in some cases). Is it possible to take a disk image and write it to a partition on the HDD so that I can then boot from that partition and then install the OS onto a third partition?   Most of us with fingerprint readers and such devices probably use the software provided by the vendor, to enable biometric OS login or single sign-on functionality. However, I've recently wondered if there is any third-party software that will do the same thing? This would be similar to how you don't need the manufacturer's software to use a scanner, printer, or webcam - you just use their drivers and your choice of software. Is there anything like this for fingerprint readers or other biometric devices? Free or Open Source projects are preferred, but I'd be interested in learning about any existing solutions regardless. I personally am particularly interested in Windows-compatible software, but I'll leave the query open for any OS.

• winusb formatting and installation error, lost data storage on 32gb flash drive

  i recently purchased a pny brand 32gb usb drive to use for configuring a dual boot on my computer, and for hdd files backup. i also recently installed zorin os 6.1 as my main os, and then downloaded winusb for linux, and set it to install the iso for windows 8 release preview as the activation code is still good untill jan.2013, and there was an error on the installation. i rebooted the computer, plugged in the usb drive, and i went from 32gb usable space to somehow having a partitioned drive (mounted as two separate drives) one being 3.7gb, and the other being i believe 25gb or so... i then formatted the drive with gparted back to fat32, and it still read as a windows usb with the installation files on it still? so then i took my usb drive to my library which runs windows 8, i installed bootice, and completely reformatted my usb drive, and somehow it is usable, but still not perfect. it reads i only have 29.9gb usable space... i have already thought of the non usable area, and that doesnt account for this error as when i first bought the drive and plugged it in on linux, it read total drive space was 32.2 and exactly 32 was usable. somehow i am short by 2gb of space which is very critical for what i am doing. i love linux, i only needed windows for bluray playback with daplayer as it wont work well in wine, but if i keep losing space on my usb drives im afraid ill have to switch back. any help would be appreciated as i already visited pny's site, and they have no support for this issue, and im not that fond of partitions, file systems, or formatting.

• How to add LDAP user to existing local group in RHEL?

  I'm attempting to add some of our LDAP users to a locally defined group on our RHEL server, however I get an error stating that the LDAP user is not found in /etc/passwd. What would be the best way to allow LDAP users to be added to local groups? My feeling is that this must be done manually. I could edit: /etc/group and add the LDAP group to the list. Would that be ideal? • Windows 7 Via Hyperion 4-1 drivers

  I have a clean install of Win 7 on some relatively old hardware. Everything works pretty well however my cpu is pegged at 100% most of the time. Task Manager shows srvchost as being a main culprit of course but also system interrupts. I have a Biostar socket 478 MB with Via chipset. I have tried to find Windows 7 drivers for this but when I download and try to install what VIA/BIOSTAR say should be good for all OS's it will not load. I get a message saying can't find components for this OS. Anybody have any idea where I might find suitable drivers for the Chipset? BTW I'm not using the integrated graphics on the board but have a radeon 4500 pci-e card.

  I am working on implementing a custom server application that should be capable of handling a very large volume of traffic. I am aware that this type of question has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a good answer. What I'm really looking for is for a server with given specs which OS will be able to handle a larger traffic faster and more reliably. I do not care about rights management or any other features. I am fairly good with both platforms, and so I would like to pick the OS with better performance on a clean install, and with nothing else running. Thanks in advance.

• Recover from a recover partition when F11 doesn't work and windows is corrupt

  I have someones presario V3000 laptop. It has a D drive which is the recovery partition. The user brought it to me and windows would no longer even boot up. I could only reload XP and try to find a way to recover from the recovery partition. However haven't been able to. I read, hold F11 down when booting up, but that didn't do anything, and the other item I read is to create the CDs from the software installed in the OS from the factory. Well that is the OS that went corrupt and is no longer there. A new reloaded version of XP is there now. Is there still a way I can either create recover CD's/DVD's or boot from the recovery partition?

I have a Lenovo notebook with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional x64. I just did a clean reinstall with retail installation Win7 Professional x64 disk I got from MSDNAA programme I'm member. I wanted to install the OS as Lenovo OEM with the same key I had before, but when I tried to activate the newly installed Windows, it gave me 0xc004e003 error. So the question is, can I use my OEM key for Win7 installed as retail? If not, can I somehow change the installed OS to OEM? The other think is, the OEM key I have tried is just some key I found in my notes, because I don't have any Windows sticker on beneath my laptop as it used to be on all my previous ones. Can I somehow find out "what is the origin" of the supposed key I'm trying to use?

• Missing disc when installing windows 7

  Hi, when I was installing windows 7 on my new bought computer it asked me on which disc I would like to install the OS on, either the 1 tera byte disc or the ssd disc, I chose to install it on the ssd disc. But now when I have installed the OS, the 1 tera byte disc isn't visible in "my computer" and I don't know how to access it, I didn't do anything strange in the installation, that by the way is idiot secure. So my question, what do you think have happend and how do you believe that this issue is solved? Regards Anders

• Is this an apt-get issue or network issue?

  I just installed my first Ubuntu server (12.04) instance and immediately am noticing a few things: Running apt-get install or update fails (see below) Running ifconfig produces peculiar IP addresses starting with 10.x.x.x and my router does not see the server at all in its "Attached Devices" page (its a consumer grade Netgear) When I run apt-get I get 50+ of the following errors: Failed to fetch <some-http-url. Temporary failure resolving <blah.ubuntu.com I read up on this error for 12.04, and found some similar posts on this forum and on serverfault that recommended going into /etc/resolv.conf and adding an entry: nameserver 8.8.8.8 To my surprise, I found that /etc/resolve.conf was a symlink pointing to somewhere else and I had to delete it first, then create a new one with the entry indicated above. I restarted the server and tried running apt-get again: same results. How do I start diagnosing the problem (I'm a relatively new Linux/Ubuntu user)? Additional details that may help: This is actually a virtual machine running as a VirtualBox guest OS The physical host that is running this VM is my laptop which has a wireless connection; I'm wondering if (somehow) the laptop is getting the network wirelessly, but perhaps either the VBox VM and/or the Ubuntu server OS isn't configured for wireless and so nothing is "getting through"? Thanks in advance for any pointers!   Can anyone tell me what the main differences between i.e. MBR vs GPT or any other partition scheme are? Why would one choose one over the other? I am not an expert but from new release of Mac OS X which includes a feature called Time Machine, which I find highly useful. GPT is the requirement for Mac OS X Lion ... so on this basis I would say that GPT is more useful than MBR. What other partition schemes are there and which one should be used in which situation?

Just in case, you have WLS 10.3.6 running in 32-bit mode and the JDK being used is installed for 64-bit mode [On Solaris OS, JDK 64-bit installation comprises of installing 32-bit JDK followed by a patch for 64-bit JDK].  Verification of the mode being used One can verify the mode of Weblogic Server in the following ways Either check the commonEnv.sh script located at $MIDDLEWARE_HOME/wlserver_10.3/common/bin where $MIDDLEWARE_HOME refers to the install directory of Middleware. Look for the patterns - SUN_ARCH_DATA_MODEL and JAVA_USE_64BIT in the file. For 32-bit mode, the parameters would appear as shown belowSUN_ARCH_DATA_MODEL="32"JAVA_USE_64BIT=false Check the server console logs; which JDK is being used during start-up By checking which JDK is used by the running process of Weblogic Server Configuration Steps Take a backup of the commonEnv.sh script located at $MIDDLEWARE_HOME/wlserver_10.3/common/bin where $MIDDLEWARE_HOME refers to the install directory of Middleware Modify the commonEnv.sh script for the following parameters: The values should be 64 and true respectively for 64-bit modeSUN_ARCH_DATA_MODEL="64"JAVA_USE_64BIT=true  Restart the weblogic server. • How to stop receiving an error reading iCal invitations on Mac sent from Thunderbird?

  When I open an iCal invitation (Mail Attachment.ics file) in Mac Mail.app sent to me from someone using Thunderbird, I receive the following error: The only solution that I've found to date is to save the Mail Attachment.ics file somewhere like the Desktop, open it in a text editor, and delete the blank lines at the beginning and end of the file. This problem appears to only happen when I'm receiving invitations from people using Thunderbird under Windows. Does anyone know of a better way to solve this problem? Is this a bug in Apple iCal, or is Thunderbird not meeting the iCal spec?
