Ubuntu doesn't load, can't even open a terminal to type commands, even after boot repair

When I start Ubuntu I only get my desktop picture and am unable to open a terminal to type any commands. When I try a Guest session all I get is a red Ubuntu backdrop, nothing else. I tried boot repair but no improvement. Summary information following boot repair: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8109809/ I can paste some of it here if someone can tell me which part of it is relevant. This all occurred after I tried to remove compizconfig (which I might not have completed), because it's been using up my CPU (running at 50-60% with compiz at the top in System monitor. My laptop has been running very slow since installing Ubuntu so I've been trying to fix that, also website videos play slow and the startup of Ubuntu has been faulty. I also installed a proprietory Nvidia driver (304) before this launcher issue occurred, in an effort to fix my video problem (didn't help anything). Laptop is Dell 620m with Intel Core 2; 1.83GHz, 2 GB RAM, Ubuntu 14.04 (new to Linux); 66GB Ubuntu partition. Everything works fine on the small XP partition of my laptop, but I've moved all my files to the larger Ubuntu portion. I wanted to try some answers I found to similar questions but they all seem to involve commands in a terminal and I can't open a terminal. How can I get the launcher back, along with access to my programmes etc? Thank you for any help.

I'm having problems with cache, I think. I have a website in Joomla, and I have some .css (layout.css, position.css, .... ) and I have at home of the website, 3 buttons, I tested in localhost, and when I see the home well, I upload everything to production, to my server. Now, I just edited some styles of these buttons, for example, the width, in order to see them better...but I'm having a problem with the cache, because sometimes I see them with new changes, but other times I see with the old styles.....I realized that this happens especially with chrome Could you help me, please? I've trolled the internets to make hdmi work on my system Ubuntu 12.04 software center kernel 3.5 uname: Linux ubuntu 3.5.0-18-generic #29~precise1-Ubuntu SMP...x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux open source radeon drivers vgaswitcheroo (hybrid intel/radeon gpu): I boot with intel, not radeon, running. (and recall that with kernel 3.5, vgaswitcheroo now gives info on a third item, "DIS-Audio"; it indicates pwr on my system) ( /etc/rc.local: chown user:user /sys/kernel/debug/ # change "username" with your user name echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch ) grub indeed now has "radeon.audio=1" for testing audio, I did aplay -l which gave me the card and device, which made me try aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and lo! I get crystal clear sound on my hdtv. If I play an mp3 file as the argument to that command, I get noise as, I guess, aplay interprets the mp3 code as a wav. If I play a .wav that is not in the /usr/share/sounds/alsa/ directory, I get nothing. Internet flash video in browser plays no sound over hdmi. Both system sounds control and pavucontrol have hdmi cedar selected. Alas, I can not get sound for any gui test (left, right). Why would only aplay, and only when directed with "-D plughw", yield sound over hdmi? I've also tried only using one sound program at a time, if it was a limitation of alsa, so I tried aplay with web browser and even the sound control gui closed. I tried each of the last two, running alone. No improvement. alsamixer only shows hda intel and I think it's only the intel audio, not the hdmi.

If this is not posted in correct place, please migrate it I kept a .htaccess file in my public_html folder inside the root. When I view the website it is giving server misconfiguration error. my .htaccess file contains this only php_value upload_max_filesize 100M php_value post_max_size 100M I wonder what may be wrong. Django: cannot pass variable to included template?

Hi, I got a problem where I want to use template including in Django. Here is the real example: I got 3 file: home.html (will get the context variable passed from Views), base.html (the skeleton template file) and the header.html (included by base.html). If if put the code below directly in base.html without including the header.html, the {{title}} variable passing from home is correctly called. But if I include the header.html in base.html, the {{title}} variable's value cannot be called. <title>{% block title %}{% endblock %} | {{ SITE_INFO_TITLE }}</title> Is there any solution to this problem? Tomcat 6 configuration example for Ubuntu Linux?

I'm very new to Tomcat and I'm having some issues figuring out how to set it up. I set it up on Ubuntu Linux and started reading and trying to follow the information given on the apache website here: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/deployer-howto.html Apparently I'm missing something. I have a WAR named MyWebapp.war and it's in a directory /home/mywebapp. In /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost/MyWebapp.xml, I have the following line: <Context path="/MyWebapp" docBase="/home/mywebapp" antiResourceLocking="false" /> Everything else is the default configuration that came with tomcat6 via the Ubuntu package. When I restart Tomcat and try to go to http://localhost:8080/MyWebapp, I get a 404. The WAR file isn't unpacked and nothing seems to be working. I'm going to be deploying two Grails applications on this server with Tomcat. Is there a more straight forward way to do this?

Hello, I need to parse a text file that has a lot of levels and characters. I've been trying different ways to parse it but I haven't been able to get anything to work. Building a linux system

I am worried about hardware compatibility. I have several older PCs with various hardware and wish to install Linux onto them. I have several ideas about what I would like to do. first, I am a novice and know just enough to get me into trouble in a lot of areas. I can not find adequate descriptions of the usage between a desktop and a server version of Linux. When would you want to choose to build a server instead of a desktop and can you change a desktop to a server if you need higher functionality? I wonder if I should use 32 or 64 bit? I believe 32 bit on older (P1 or P2 systems) would be the safe way to go. what is the extent can these systems be used? Can they used to play high end graphics on-line games or just simple browsing and word processing? How do I determine what programs the system can use? I have pondered on the idea of linking several systems together to make one big computer. I know this can be done with some functionality improvement. Any Ideas about this?

Project freezed - what should I leave to the people after me?

So the project I've been working on is now going to be freezed for unknown period of time. May be when the project unfreezes it won't be assigned to me or anybody of the current team. Actually we did also inherit the project after it had been freezed but there was nothing left by the team before us to help us understand even the basic needs of the project, so plenty of time passed by until we got to know the project well. My question is what do you think we should do to help people after us to best understand the needs of the project, what we have done, why we've done it, etc. I am open to other ideas of why should we leave some tracks to the others that will work on this project also. Some steps we already have taken: technical documentation (not full but at least there is some); source-control system history; estimations on which parts of the project need improvement and why we think so; bunch of unit tests. What do you think of what we've already prepared and what else could we do?

cannot access localhost using ip

I have done a small web development project using eclipse. It runs well when I try running it on browser with url localhost:8080/myproject/home.html. But if I want to access it on another machine (laptop, mobile, etc. using the same wifi) it is not possible; it is not able to connect. After Googling for a while found out that I have to use the IP address instead of 'localhost'. So I tried 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html, but still does not work. In fact i am unable to open that url on the same machine (where localhost:8080/myproject/home.html works fine). I also added a new Inbound rule in control panel firewall settings, allowing access to all ports for protocol TCP. Still have problem in running application with the url 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html (both on same machine as well as laptop and mobile). How can I improve my isometric tile-picking algorithm?

I've spent the last few days researching isometric tile-picking algorithms (converting screen-coordinates to tile-coordinates), and have obviously found a lot of the math beyond my grasp. I have come fairly close and what I have is workable, but I would like to improve on this algorithm as it's a little off and seems to pick down and to the right of the mouse pointer. I've uploaded a video to help visualize the current implementation: http://youtu.be/EqwWcq1zuaM My isometric rendering algorithm is based on what is found at this stackoverflow question's answer, with the exception that my x and y axis' are inverted (x increased down-right, while y increased up-right). Here is where I am converting from screen to tiles: // these next few lines convert the mouse pointer position from screen // coordinates to tile-grid coordinates. cameraOffset captures the current // mouse location and takes into consideration the camera's position on screen. How to stop an Android Service ONLY when there are no other activities in my app running?

Is there a way I can test if there are any other activities in my app still alive? I am looking to stop a service in an onDestroy method, but only want to do this if there are no other activities from my app still alive on the stack. I have the call stop the service in the main activity's onDestroy() method. This works perfect EXCEPT that if a user launches my app, then launches a few activities in my app, then hits the home screen and RELAUNCHES my app, they will subvert my order and the main activity will now be above other activities of my app. From this state, if they hit the back button and 'back out' of my home screen they will trigger the onDestroy() method and kill the service even though there are other activities open on the stack. I want to avoid this by stopping the service ONLY if I am sure there are no other activities of mine open on the stack. Possible?

Recently I had an interview with dev team in a company. The team uses agile + TDD. The code exercise implements a video rental store which generates statement to calc total rental fee for each type of video (new release, children, etc) for a customer. The existing code use object like: Statement to generate statement and calc fee where big switch statement sits to use enum to determine how to calc rental fee customer holds a list of rentals movie base class and derived class for each type of movie (NEW, CHILDREN, ACTION, etc) The code originally doesn't compile as the owner was assumed to be hit by a bus. So here is what I did: outlined the improvement over object model to have better responsibility for each class. use strategy pattern to replace switch statement and weave them in config But the team says it's waste of time because there is no requirement for it and UAT test suite works and is the only guideline goes into architecture decision. The underlying story is just to get pricing feature out and not saying anything about how to do it. So the discussion is focused on why should time be spent on refactor the switch statement. In my understanding, agile methodology doesn't mean zero design upfront and such code smell should be avoided at the beginning. Also any unit/UAT test suite won't detect such code smell, otherwise sonar, findbugs won't exist. Here I want to ask: is there such a thing called agile design in the agile methodology? Just like agile documentation. how to define agile design upfront? how to know enough is enough? In my understanding, ballpark architecture and data contract among components should be defined before/when starting project, not the details. Am I right? anyone can explain what the team is really looking for in this kind of setup? is it design aspect or agile aspect? how to implement minimum viable product concept in the agile process in the real world project? Is it must that you feel embarrassed to be MVP?

Very large log files, what should I do?

(This question deals with a similar issue, but it talks about a rotated log file.) Today I got a system message regarding very low /var space. As usual I executed the commands in the line of sudo apt-get clean which improved the scenario only slightly. Then I deleted the rotated log files which again provided very little improvement. Upon examination I find that some log files in the /var/log has grown up to be very huge ones. To be specific, ls -lSh /var/log gives, total 28G -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 14G Aug 23 21:56 kern.log -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 14G Aug 23 21:56 syslog -rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 390K Aug 23 21:47 wtmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 287K Aug 23 21:42 dpkg.log -rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 287K Aug 23 20:43 lastlog As we can see, the first two are the offending ones. I am mildly surprised why such large files have not been rotated. So, what should I do? Simply delete these files and then reboot? Or go for some more prudent steps? I am using Ubuntu 14.04.

I'm using Cucumber (0.6.3), Cucumber-Rails (0.3.0), Webrat (0.7.0), and Rails (2.3.5) for some tests. The following scenario passes just fine: Scenario: load one page Given I am on the home page Then I should see "Welcome" The following, however, fails: Scenario: load two pages Given I am on the FAQ pag When I go to the home page Then I should see "Welcome" The problem is that the second @response.body is blank. Steps to send patch to Launchpad

With a Git/Github background and knowing very little about Bazaar VCS, I would like to occasionally report a bug to Launchpad and even send a patch. I'd like to do it in a "proper" way so that it's ready for merging or improvement while not getting in way. I can't seem to find a decent simple How-to suited for my needs. So what I did so far: I have created a Launchpad account, reported the bug, installed Bazaar and setup SSH keys etc. Now if it was Github, I'd fork the repo, clone the forked repo, create a sanely named branch and do the work, commit + push, create a pull request using Github WUI. But it's not Github, and both LP and Bazaar architectures seem quite different from their Github/Git cunterparts. So could a kind soul save me from drowning in tons of documents and complile a straightforward step path, mainly the second part? Possibly including relevant CLI commands when they are needed? Edit: It seems that I should clarify if I'm asking specifically about Ubuntu packages (whatever it means) or Launchpad packages. I don't really care much about distinction between Ubuntu packages and non-Ubuntu packages. Any software could be in Ubuntu today and out of it tomorrow, or vice-versa. The development is what matters much more than distribution. Ao I was assuming that not every single package distributed in Ubuntu is hosted on Launchpad, an "official" or "default" workflow for Launchpad exists (well if all devs can agree on using Bazaar, why couldn't most of them agree on a patching workflow?), so I'm asking about the Launchpad way, not the Ubuntu way. And I chose AU because since the intersection is vast, I guess it's pretty on topic here.
