• Minimalistic flatfile-based "wall" PHP app with authentication and RSS?

  I am looking for an open-source minimalistic "message board" PHP software. Not a forum, more something like one simple facebook wall. The only thing a user can do is post a new message. With RSS, and able to run on flat files (no database) with Apache+PHP Authentication based on a configuration file, no management UI needed. • What software allows editing text with furigana professionally?

  I'm studying Japanese and need to write a lot of text with furigana. I've been using Word so far but my main concern is that entering furigana is not only quite clumsy (no hotkey) but what's more important is that once entered, you can't globally change either its font or its size; you need to change them one by one. This is a deal-breaker for me since my average text contains hundreds of entries. There is a hack you can do as pointed out by another guy on SU but I found that by using it I could (and did) break my document easily. My question is: is there a software that is specifically designed to work with Japanese text that also has its UI in English? As stated above, I need something that has furigana editing as a first-class citizen.

• Run chromium-browser on Linux with fullscreen and application modes ON

  Some time ago chromium-browser was supporting a so called "kiosk mode", which could start chromium in fullscreen and removed unnecessary titlebar and some other UI components. Right now it looks like it's no longer supported. After few updates the same script that I was using for launching kiosk mode is not behaving the same. I checked some sites and learned that recently they introduced a so called "application mode" (--app=http://mysite.com). All cool and neat, but application mode does no longer enforce fullscreen. How could I force chromium-browser to behave exactly as in previous kiosk mode?

  I use phpMyAdmin to manage all of my MySQL databases and SQL Management Studio Express to manage my MS SQL databases. Now I need to start working with Firebird, and I'm looking for a tool along the lines of SQL Management Studio to manage those databases as well. I can be flexible with the UI and can learn a new system, so if there's something freely available that will do the trick but isn't quite the same as SQL management Studio I think I could adapt. • OS X server 10.6 - how to restore default groups?

  I've set up my OS X server as an open directory master first, then (experimenting), I've changed it to standalone server, then set it back as an open directory master again. Now, all the default groups I saw before are gone (Domain Administrators, Domain users etc). Do you know how to restore these groups? Note that the groups are gone only from the Workgroup Manager UI. They do seem to be still there otherwise. id -G gives the usual list of groups. If I create an account and makes its primary group 'staff', Workgroup Manager shows all the inherited groups properly (but not on the main list). If I create an account and associate it to a new group I just created, then the account has no inherited groups...

• Reenabling the Spotlight Menubar item in Mac OS X 10.6

  I believe I followed the instructions here to disable Spotlight indexing and remove the menubar item. I reenabled indexing just fine, but when I changed the permissions back to 744, the spotlight search position came back (as in the space it would normally occupy), but the actual icon and search box will not show up. If I click that portion of the screen I get a blue box, but I can't type anything in to anything. Currently, permissions look like this: [~]$ ll /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle.bak/Contents/MacOS/ total 648 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 835K Sep 17 14:48 Search* ll is an alias mapped to the following alias ll='${LS_PREAMBLE} -hl' with $LS_PREAMBLE [~]$ echo $LS_PREAMBLE ls -GF (Ignore the .bak extension. I decided that until I found a way to fully restore it, I would just remove it entirely following the directions here) That looks right to me and obviously something is launching, but the UI elements aren't there.   Please, don't treat this like a discussion question, I'm looking for direct answers: Yes / No, because... I work on a financial company and I'm needing a tool for email archiving and auditing. The compliance sector is asking for it and I have to provide it. I've searched and found two solutions: MailStore (commercial, Windows only) and Enkive (open source, very poor UI and lack of features). I'm using Postfix as MTA and Courier for IMAP/POP access. I'm almost deciding to write it myself, I have the knowledge needed, but I'm wondering right now if it's worth to put (a lot) more hours to make it open source and user friendly. So my question is, have you ever had the same need? Would this be a helpful solution? Is there any other good tool that I haven't found? Thank you!

• Vmware server: Browser does not load user interface

  I have the latest vmware server isntalled on ubuntu 8.04 lts 64 bit. I access the user interface over this url, which matches my ip and port settings: https://10.1.1.99:11222/ui Sometimes it works in fierofox 3.6, but sometimes not. Same in Google Chrome. When it does not work, what happens is that the cert is checked, the browser is loading something, but the result is a white page. Sometimes the favicon of vmware (blue with 3 squares) appears, but only the white page. And sometimes it works. I reload many times, most of the time the whit epage appears again. On some days I succeed. But on many days not. I can give more info if someone tells me what is needed. Please help, we need this badly.

  I have installed Windows XP Virtual PC on Windows 7 to test a site that is having issues in IE7 on windows xp - the website loads up but you cannot click on hyperlinks - its like the website has frozen - now is this a browser support issue or OS issue? Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any browser tools i can use to spot any problems? Sorry if i have been too vague - not much else to say really - completely lost.. • How to change the Windows 7 taskbar icon spacing?

  At home i run Windows 7 with on a widescreen LCD with the taskbar to the left and this works well, but at work i just got upgraded to W7 on a 4:3 LCD and have the taskbar at the bottom. So what's with the taskbar icon spacing? Is there any way to change this? I.e. move them closer together? There's gotta be a registry setting or some fancy Tweak UI application that will reclaim some of that elbow room. That image above represents nearly half the width of my desktop. I know i know, white space is great and it gives it a light, whimsical look. Blah blah. Awesome, but can i get some real estate back please?

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

• "Deny log on through Terminal Serivces" insists on "Everyone"

  We've got a standalone (non-domain) server where "Deny log on through Terminal Services" contains "Everyone" -- ok, we didn't want that, not sure how it got set, but whatever. We removed it ...and "Everyone" came back. Tried adding "Guest" to the deny list, removing "Everyone" ...which ended up with the setting containing "Everyone, Guest" Clearly there's another setting somewhere that's preempting this one, but it beats me which one. Any ideas? ("Everyone" is being shown as reset upon reloading the Local Security Settings window, so it's possible that it's not actually being changed in the underlying store, and just shows the change in the UI)

  I'm looking for a good batch script that would quickly find & clean all the known safe temporary folders/files from Windows (as many variants as possible) machines (e.g. the windows temp folder, all users IE temp folders, etc.). I'm fond of UI tools like CCleaner (over Cleanmgr.exe), but when I'm trying to clean several computers quickly and/or with minimal involvement, it would be nice to have a script. Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some gestures in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this . I have also tried to reinstall the windows 7 using USB but it gives error of something UI or Boot configuration error. Even now Ubuntu 12.04 is also not reinstalling. Now what I want to do is install windows 7 and install ubuntu 12.04 in virtual box so that I can run both system as this is not working. But can't because I can't open Window 7 even can't format my drive. Please suggest something.

• Server Backup Solutions - compiling?

  Windows Copying is a real mess ever since Windows Vista. Even Microsoft claims they've improved the performance, from a user perspective, it's not quite visible. Even with single file the copying window appears too much time for 'Calculating' and then finishing the copy(Even after 100% completion some times the dialog remains active). At the same time, I was backing up some files in Ubuntu Linux. I felt it's really fast. Might be a feeling caused by faster UI updates. I read an informative post from Jeff Atwood few years back on Windows File Copying. but what my specific questions are Is (Ubuntu) Linux file performance is better than Windows-7? Are both algorithms, Windows and Linux is making use of multiple threads and pipelining mechanism to improve the speed? If yes, which one is better?

• What is the formula for HughesNet FAP calculation?

  I am somewhat frustrated with the only FAP monitor I have found on the net and discovered because it relies on a running count of bandwidth usage which (1) requires a service in the background; and (2) Tends to get inaccurate over time. Given that there is a diagnostics page on the firmware of the modem that tells the exact usage per hour, I was planning on writing a more accurate version with a better UI. However, it appears that HughesNet keeps the exact formula for calculating whether you are in FAP a secret. I have no idea why they wouldn't be more forthcoming with this information. Wondering if anyone out in SU-land had done some trial and error testing to reverse engineer the formula or had some inside knowledge to share.

  I just bought a new SSD (Vertex4 from OCZ, 256G) and installed Windows 8 with it on my laptop. I am not using an external hard drive to keep extra data (paging, temp files etc) because I am using a laptop and do not want to carry it around with me. My question is, if I disable Windows indexer (Windows Search service), does Windows still search files under the search (Windows 7 Start menu search/Metro UI Windows 8 search)? • Force Windows to cache executables without running them?

  Is there a way to force Windows to pre-load certain EXE/DLL binaries into its prefetch/superfetch cache as if they had been executed? I have a particular application that loads pretty slowly on first run but if it's "warm" (recently executed) it starts pretty quickly. I'd like to prime the cache early in the background before the application is needed. But since it shows a UI, I'm looking for a way to do this silently. So simply launching the application it isn't ideal. Thanks you in advance. Prompted by David's suggestion in the comments, I wrote a PowerShell script to memory map the files, seek to the end, and close them. I haven't done any controlled tests yet and it could just be my imagination, but Sublime Text (the application in question) appeared to load much more quickly this time around and I haven't used it for several hours.

• Stop application windows hiding when app loses focus

  How can I stop windows on my mac (Mac OS Snow Leopard) from hiding when the app that owns the window loses focus. Not all apps on the mac do this, but Photoshop and Transmission are perfect examples of apps that exhibit this behaviour. It's frustrating when you want to type notes in another app (e.g. word processor), but refer to the contents of the window that hides when you focus the word processor to start typing your notes! There must be an option (or hack) to disable this? I always thought Apple were supposed to be the masters of UI design, but allowing apps to do this seems wrong.
