• What is the best way to restrict adult content on 12.04 LTS

  I bought my kids a PC and installed 12.04 (Unity) on it. The bottom line is, I want my children to use the computer unsupervised while I have confidence they cannot access anything inappropriate. What I have looked at: I was looking at Scrubit which allows me configure my wifi router but this solution would also affect my other PC and mobile devices. This is not feasible as I just want the solution to work on one PC. I also did some Google searches and came across Nanny (it seems to look the part). My experience of OSS is that the best solutions frequently never appear first on a Google search list so my question is very specific. I want to leverage your knowledge and experience to understand “What is the best way to restrict adult content on 12.04 LTS” as this is important to me. Please don't answer this question "try this or that", then give me some PPA, I am looking for knowledge and experience from someone in my situation. Thanks in advance

• Why are part-time jobs in programming an anomaly?

  I've recently quit my full time developing job at mega-corp, and I decided that I'll look for a part time job. Since then I've talked to half a dozen potential employers, and every one of them had the same reaction when I said the magic words "part-time" - they all closed up and became suspicious. Now, I understand that it might just be me, so as control I asked every one of them what if I were willing to work full time, and they all said I would probably get an offer. My question is two fold: Why, as an employer, would you give up a competent, even great, developer, simply because he wants to work 3 days a week and not 5? How do I sell the story of part time job better? I usually just list my reasons which are that I prefer that balance currently in my life and that I want to work on my own projects, but it leaves them even more suspicious - am I going to start something myself and quit? Am I just lazy?

• Telerik Releases a new Visual Entity Designer

Want a domain model designer for data access that is easy, yet powerful? Then the Telerik Visual Entity Designer is for you. Built on top of Telerik OpenAccess ORM, a very mature and robust product, Teleriks Visual Entity Designer is a new way to build your domain model that is very powerful and also real easy to use. How easy? Ill show you here. First Look: Using the Telerik Visual Entity Designer To get started, you need to install the Telerik OpenAccess ORM Q1 release for Visual Studio 2008 or 2010. You dont need to use any of the Telerik OpenAccess wizards, designers, or using statements. Just right click on your project and select Add|New Item from the context menu. Choose Telerik OpenAccess Domain Model from the Visual Studio project templates. (Note to existing OpenAccess users, dont run the Enable ORM wizard or any other OpenAccess menu unless you are building OpenAccess Entities.) You will then have to specify the database backend (SQL Server, SQL Azure, Oracle, MySQL, etc) and connection. After you establish your connection, select the database objects you want to add to your domain model. You can also name your model, by default it will be NameofyourdatabaseEntityDiagrams. You can click finish here if you are comfortable, or tweak some advanced settings. Many users of domain models like to add prefixes and suffixes to classes, fields, and properties as well as handle pluralization. I personally accept the defaults, however, I hate how DBAs force underscores on me, so I click on the option to remove them. You can also tweak your namespace, mapping options, and define your own code generation template to gain further control over the outputted code. This is a very powerful feature, but for now, I will just accept the defaults.   When we click finish, you can see your domain model as a file with the .rlinq extension in the Solution Explorer. You can also bring up the visual designer to view or further tweak your model by double clicking on the model in the Solution Explorer.  Time to use the model! Writing a LINQ Query Programming against the domain model is very simple using LINQ. • Non-disruptive desktop-clock?

  Hello, is there a clock application, that can be placed on your screen like a widget staying always on top but automatically fades away on mouseover enabling you to click through it on items below, (behaves pretty much like the Ubuntu notifications). I am aware, that there are screenlets and gdesklets widget apps, but those are buggy, look outdated, and do not comply with the criteria listed above. What I have in mind is a clock that is large, (digital), always visible (on top of all other windows), and does not disrupt your work (e.g. you can still click that scroll bar or button if it is just below the clock, since the clock fades away on hovering). • Optimistic work sharing on sparsely distributed systems

  What would a system like BOINC look like if it were written today? At the time BOINC was written, databases were the primary choice for maintaining a shared state and concurrency among nodes. Since then, many approaches have been developed for tasking with optimistic concurrency (OT, partial synchronization primitives, shared iterators etc.) Is there an optimal paradigm for optimistically distributing units of work on sparsely distributing systems which communicate through message passing? Sorry if this is a bit vague. P.S. The concept of Tuple-spaces is great, but locking is inherent to its definition. Edit: I already have a federation system which works very well. I have a reactive OT system is implemented on top of it. I'm looking to extend it to get clients to do units of work.

• Tales of a corrupt SQL log

  Warning: Im a simple dev, not an all powerful DBA with godly powers. This morning, one of my sites was down and DNN reported a problem with the database.  A quick series of tests revealed that the culprit was a corrupted log file.
