• What is so great about Visual Studio?

  In my admittedly somewhat short time as programmer, I have used many development environments on many platforms. Most notably, Eclipse/Linux, XCode/OSX, CLI/editor/Linux, VisualDSP/Blackfin/Windows and MSVC/Windows. (I used each one for several months) There are neat features in pretty much all of them. But somehow, I just can't find any in MSVC. Then again, so many people really seem to like it, so I am probably missing something here. So please tell me: What is so great about Visual Studio? Things I like: Refactoring tools in Eclipse Build error highlighting in XCode and Eclipse Edit-all-in-Scope in XCode Profiler in XCode Flexibility of Eclipse and CLI/editor Data plotting in VisualDSP Things I don't like Build error display in MSVC (not highlighted in code) Honestly, this is not meant to be a rant. Of course I am a Mac-head and biased as hell, but I have to use MSVC on the job, so I really want to like it.

• LNK2005: delete already defined error in VC++

  Hi, I asked this question earlier as well: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2773168/lnk2005-delete-already-defined-error-in-vc The answer I got was that I should be using dynamic version of DLLs. I did that and it compiled fine. Now, but when I gave the exe to one of my colleagues to run, they told me - they can't run it as it requires some shared dll, so they need a static one. When I try to do static build then I get the error as mentioned in my previous link. Do, I need to provide some other file as well with exe. I have got .lib file as well in the build directory. Shall I provide taht one as well? I can run it fine on my m/c in whichever directory I put it. Any help is much appreciated as I am really stuck. Thanks in advance, Suchita

• why a .net 1.1 code gets compiled in 2.0 and throws an error?

  Hi I have a web projects which is build in VS2003/1.1 framework and deployed in a webserver with IIS setting specified to 1.1 framework.lets say project X I also have another web project which is build with VS2008/2.0. IIS setting - ASP version 2.0 is selected and all pages are assigned to run with 2.0* dlls. Lets say project Y Now the problem seem to be when I hit project x, sometimes it throws errors like "error BC30456: 'Initialize Culture' is not a member of 'ASP.**" During troubleshooting this issue, I browsed through 2.0 Temporary ASP.Net files "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\" and found temp files generated for project X. (HUH?) How/why 1.1 project gets compiled in 2.0 only when it errors out.( or we could put it this way that it errors out every time it gets compiled in 2.0 which it is not supposed to) I'm confused as to why this is happening when project X has nothing to do with .net 2.0.

• Resize a DIV when its text changes

  I wanted to build a custom html button without using any solution like bootstrap etc. but from scratch. I decided to use a div to build my button with very good results. However, when the text changes its length that does not mean the div will change its width as well. Should I approach this using javascript or is there a CSS solution I am missing. Apologies for missing code: div { position: relative; width: 121px; height: 30px; } I need a minimum width and not a dynamic this is why I used a fixed one. In case there is not a CSS alternative then I will use a javascript approach.

• Zend Framework 2 without MVC

  I'm currently using Zend Framework 2 for all my web tier development using the MVC module that's shipped with the framework. However, I want to implement my business logic in a separate layer, call it the business tier which is a non HTTP layer and expose it through AMQP, and I'd like to reuse my knowledge of PHP for implementing this. Since there is a lot of "stuff" that I need in this business layer such as configuration, a service manager, database access, etc, etc, I'd like to use all the goodies shipped with Zend Framework 2 for this. Are there any examples or tutorials out there on how to build a Zend Framework 2 application that is not build for the web tier and doesn't require the MVC module?

  I apologize if this question is vague, but I want to build a drop down header, very similar to the one on StackOverflow that alerts you whenever you have earned a new badge, or on Twitter whenever a new tweet comes in. I've been looking around on the internet for a tutorial, but I'm having trouble googling exactly what I'm looking for. I assume there is a way to do this in jQuery, or there may be a jQuery plugin for it, but I haven't had any luck finding one. The idea would probably be to make an AJAX request every so many seconds, and if a new alert-worthy item is found, display it for the user. If someone could point me to a resource to learn how to build one, and/or an existing plugin, that would be great.

  I hope to create a single app that supports both the iPhone and the iPad. The app works in the simulator for both devices as desired. Now I'm trying to build and deploy it. I set the "Icon File" in the plist to the 57x57 .png image and when I build and try to submit the app ItunesConnect complains about needing a 72x72 .png image for the iPad. If I specify the "Icon File" to the 72x72 .png ItunesConnect complains about needing a 57x57 image for the iPhone. How do I specify both icons in a single plist?

• Fastest method for SQL Server inserts, updates, selects

  I use SPs and this isn't an SP vs code-behind "Build your SQL command" question. I'm looking for a high-throughput method for a backend app that handles many small transactions. I use SQLDataReader for most of the returns since forward only works in most cases for me. I've seen it done many ways, and used most of them myself. Methods that define and accept the stored procedure parameters as parameters themselves and build using cmd.Parameters.Add (with or without specifying the DB value type and/or length) Assembling your SP params and their values into an array or hashtable, then passing to a more abstract method that parses the collection and then runs cmd.Parameters.Add Classes that represent tables, initializing the class upon need, setting the public properties that represent the table fields, and calling methods like Save, Load, etc I'm sure there are others I've seen but can't think of at the moment as well. I'm open to all suggestions.

• Can a SQL Server 2008 database support both a REST and SOAP web services within two different endpoints?

  Say you have a SQL Server 2008 database. You build a SOAP web service. You then deploy or publish this using Visual Studio 2010 in one website. Now, using the same database, you build a REST web service, in a different solution. You deploy this on another website. Can you consume the endpoints and/or .svc file of both the SOAP and REST web services, though they reference the same SQL Server 2008 database? I don't see why not, but before I go down this path and spend days I'd like to make sure. Also if there's a performance hit to the database if it is running both SOAP and REST at the same time--again, I don't see why it would matter, but I must make sure. Thanks.

• Jenkins to not allow the same job to run concurrently on the same node?

  I have 4 nodes and 2 jobs. Any node can run 2 jobs concurrently and any job can be executed concurrently. I want to be able to restrict running the same job concurrently on the same machine. For example: Jobs: J1 and J2 nodes: N1,N2,N3 and N4 I can run J1 and J2 on the same node at the same time. I can run J1 on N1 and N3 at the same time. BUT I do not want to run J1 and another build of J1 on the same node at the same time. I have tried "Locks and Latches", "Jenkins Exclusive Execution", "Exclusion Plugin" plugins, and these will work well when trying to coordinate different jobs. But my case is trying to manage different build-instances of the same job.

• Mobile web apps - Is this the right approach?

  I need to build a cross platform mobile app (iphone, android, etc). The app is for a company like a cellular operator (Tmobile, ATT). The app needs to do the following: Show previous bills (cached so that it does not have to download everytime) Need an internet connection to download newer bills, view recent data, etc. Can I build a mobile web app to handle this? I understand that there is offline storage and iPhone has good support for web apps (full screen, good icons, offline, etc). Will a web app be the best approach to take as the app requires to be online? The app will not be used by lots of people, just customers of the website who don't want to use an existing website. We are all web developers and a mobile web app looks like the best way to approach this.

• memcpy does not copy the data

  I am caught up with a weird problem. I have one build that copies data using memcpy, while another build does not. I don't understand why, because the relevant file is still the same. I am using following code: memcpy(pxCurrentInfo, &pxInfoBuffer->axgInfoBuffer[0], sizeof(tInfo)); Data in pxInfoBuffer is fine. When I check pxCurrentInfo they are all 0s. tInfo is a structure. To give a pointer, when I put the break point and change the value pxCurrentInfo->xDL.eMethod=0 it automatically updates/copies all the correct info from pxInfoBuffer->axgInfoBuffer[0], afterwards. I don't know why.

  I have a dozen of build plans managed by a unique build agent. What I want to do, is to get the total number of triggered/scheduled builds (without counting them manually from the interface). So, question is, is there a kind of counter on the server? UPDATE #1: I'm using the v2.2.1. UPDATE #2: On the server interface (Administration - System - System Information), there are some statistics including how many builds the server performed. But, this number is reinitialized when the server goes down.

  I have been a PHP developer for about 10 years now and until about a month ago I have never used a framework. The framework I am now using due to an existing codebase is cakePHP 1.2 I can see certain benefits of the frameworks with the basic helpers like default layouts. I can definitely see the benefits of MVC keeping the logic separate etc. But the query building just seems to be bloated. Is this expected? Am I likely to be able to build better queries than the framework could build? I just feel I could get my apps running better without a framework. What are your thoughts?

  I'm aware of the android-x86 project and as far as the end result (bootable live/install iso), I am looking to do the same thing. The difference is, I'm looking to do this with the ice cream sandwich branch from android master repo. Ice cream sandwich adds full support for x86 hardware and even sports a build target specifically for running the OS in virtualbox. So my question is, is anyone aware of any documentation for building and deploying to that target? Just in case it's not clear, I'm not just using the android-x86 project because they haven't yet put up a build for anything later than android 3.

I thought at one point I could create a Select Statement to build my custom data and use that as the datasource for my Insert Into statement. i.e. something like INSERT INTO MyCustomData (ColumnKey, Column1, Column2) From (Select Top 50000 Row_Count(), 'Custom Data 1', 'Custom Data 2') I know this doesn't work, but its the only thing I can show that seems to provide an example of what I'm after. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

• javax.naming.InvalidNameException using Oracle BPM and weblogic when accessing directory

  We are getting this exception when we start our cluster (2 managed servers, 1 admin), we have deployed only the ears corresponding to the OBPM 10.3.1 SP1 in a weblogic 10.3. When the server cluster starts, one of the managed servers (the first to start) get overloaded and ran out of connections to the directory DB because of this repeatedly error. • ovs-vsctl: "eth0" is not a valid UUID

  I'm trying to setup an open v-switch inside my Ubuntu 12.04 Server VM. I have created three interfaces for this VM and I want to create a port mirror inside of the VM using these there interfaces and open v-switch. There are three Host-Only Adapters: eth0, eth1, eth2. The idea is that three other VM's will be connected to these adapters. One of these VM's will stream UDP video to eth0 and I want the vswitch'd VM to mirror those packets from eth0 onto eth1 and eth2. Each of the VM's connected to eth1 and eth2 will get the same video stream. I performed the following steps to install open v-switch: $ apt-get install python-simplejson python-qt4 python-twisted-conch automake autoconf gcc uml-utilities libtool build-essential $ apt-get install build-essential autoconf automake pkg-config $ wget http://openvswitch.org/releases/openvswitch-1.7.1.tar.gz $ tar xf http://openvswitch.org/releases/openvswitch-1.7.1.tar.gz $ cd http://openvswitch.org/releases/openvswitch-1.7.1.tar.gz $ apt-get install libssl-dev iproute tcpdump linux-headers-`uname -r` $ ./boot.sh $ ./configure - -with-linux=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build $ make $ sudo make install After installation I configured as follows: $ insmod datapath/linux/openvswitch.ko $ sudo touch /usr/local/etc/ovs-vswitchd.conf $ mkdir -p /usr/local/etc/openvswitch $ ovsdb-tool create /usr/local/etc/openvswitch/conf.db Then I started the server: $ ovsdb-server /usr/local/etc/openvswitch/conf.db \ --remote=punix:/usr/local/var/run/openvswitch/db.sock \ --remote=db:Open_vSwitch,manager_options \ --private-key=db:SSL,private_key \ --certificate=db:SSL,certificate \ --bootstrap-ca-cert=db:SSL,ca_cert --pidfile --detach --log-file $ ovs-vsctl –no-wait init (run only once) $ ovs-vswitchd --pidfile --detach The above steps I got from this tutorial and it all worked fine. For this reason, the filesystem calls used by PHP will use the legacy "ANSI" API and so the C/C++ libraries linked with this version of PHP will first try to convert yout UTF-8-encoded PHP string into the local "ANSI" codepage selected in the running environment (see the CHCP command before starting PHP from a command line window) Your version of Windows is MOST PROBABLY NOT responsible of this weird thing. Actually, this is YOUR version of PHP which is not compiled correctly, and that uses the legacy ANSI version of the Win32 API (for compatibility with the legacy 16-bit versions of Windows 95/98 whose filesystem support in the kernel actually had no direct support for Unicode, but used an internal conversion layer to convert Unicode to the local ANSI codepage before using the actual ANSI version of the API). I can't confirm whether this is my problem or not. I used phpinfo() and did not find anything interesting, but I wasn't sure what to look for.
