• Where do I start in regards to making a Gnome/Unity Form Application

  Ok so I am familiar with developing Form and Console applications on Windows using Visual Studio .Net with C#, but where do I start when it comes to Linux distro's like Ubuntu, is there an equivalent? How would one go about matching what they can do in a Windows environment with .Net and C# in a Linux environment without .Net coding in something like Java or C/C++? I am aware of Eclipse, does eclipse have a form designer or do you have to code the design of any Gnome/Unity forms manually? Can I use eclipse to write the Linux equivalent of a console application, that you just double click on to run? I also know about Mono, but the idea is that I want to learn how to develop software without using anything in the Microsoft stack and am not sure where to start. What is the standard language/framework used to develop these types of applications on Linux? As I become more proficient with Visual Studio, C# and .Net, it has struck me that without these Microsoft tools, I am nothing. I am only capable of developing for the Microsoft OS and this scares me. This isn't some anti Microsoft thing, Microsoft makes some incredible Software/Hardware/Operating Systems/IDE's, but it is generally a bad idea to put all of your eggs in one basket so if I want to learn how to develop Terminal and Gnome/Unity form applications where in the world do I start? I have used Linux on and off for years, but Windows has been my primary OS. However I have watched Linux get better and better and as much as I love Windows 7, I am dubious about Windows 8 (I for one will sorely miss my start menu)! Obviously MS aren't going anywhere anytime soon and I could spend the the next couple of decades developing for .Net without any issues but just because you can get away with something doesn't always mean it's a good idea. • Logging in to a locked computer

  Just recently I have stumbled across an old family laptop that has been out of use for nearly two years. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium so I'm not quite as enthused about my find as I originally thought I was going to be. However, when I power up the computer it immediately bring me to a login prompt. No one in the family remembers the password it is set to and I am eager to get into this machine. Does anyone know of a way to work around this issue and get into the computer to be able to find out what was configured and saved on it two years ago. Without re-installing the OS I want to bring it back into commission within the family.

• Will unbinding a server to an Open Directory Master remove its own file shares

  According to this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3180?viewlocale=en_US I am required to remove the ldap binding of my second Mac OS X Lion server before I set it up as a replica server. I initially set the server up as a replica, or so I thought, and created file shares (it refers to the first server's ACL) before I realized it was never promoted as a replica server. So as of now it's running and shares files with correct ACL permissions but if the Master goes down all the file shares seize up. I want to set it up as a replica so this is not an issue; however, I don't want to lose the file shares and their permissions as I remove the binding and restart the server-- apparently I must remove the ldap binding to the OD Master (also a Mac OS X Lion server) before setting it up as a replica.

  We're looking for a good place to host our custom Django app (a fork of OSQA) and its postgresql backend. Requirements include: Linux Python 2.6 or (ideally) Python 2.7 Django 1.2 Postgres 8.4 or later DB backup/restore handled by the hoster, not us OS & dev-platform-stack patching/maintenance handled by the hoster, not us SSH access (so we can pull source code from GitHub, so we can install python eggs, etc.) ability to set up cron jobs (e.g. to send out dail email updates) ability to send up to 10K emails/day good performance (not ganged up with a zillion other sites on one CPU, not starved for RAM) FTP or SCP access to web logs dedicated public IP SSL support Costs under $1000/month for a relatively small site (<5M pageviews/month) Good customer service We already have a prototype site running on EC2 on top of a Bitnami DjangoStack. The problem is that we have to patch the OS, patch postgres, etc. We'd really prefer a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering, like Heroku offers for Rails apps, where all we need to worry about is deploying our code instead of worrying about system software patching and maintenance. Google App Engine is closest to what we're looking for, but they don't offer relational DB access (not yet at least). Anyone have a recommendation?

• Internal Mic not working on Dell Adamo 13

  So I'm using Elementary Luna Beta (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) on a spare HDD after successfully using Jupiter release (based on 10.10) for many years. In Jupiter I had my internal mic work out of the box and with Skype installed from deb it was all setup without having to step foot inside the terminal. In Luna Beta the internal mic is not recognised by the OS and so also not recognised by Skype. I believe the hardware is this (from sudo lshw): *-multimedia description: Audio device product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 03 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 resources: irq:46 memory:f8600000-f8603fff As well as this I ran cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec which gave me: Codec: IDT 92HD73C1X5 Codec: Intel Cantiga HDMI How do I tweak Luna to get this hardware working properly? I'm able to switch out my Luna HDD with the Jupiter HDD to help troubleshoot what the differences are between the two and why the more recent OS can't find / use the mic correctly. • "blue screen" occurs when using VPN

  I am using the VPN client "Tunnelblick" for getting access to the restricted sites of my university. This is working quite fine, until sometime out of a sudden a "blue screen" occurs which is telling me to restart the computer. I am using Mac OS X Lion on a 4,1 MacBook Air. The error report tells me, that the system crashed somewhere during processing the ipconfig thread. Is someone known to this or similar problems with Mac OS X Lion and VPN and has kind of a solution?

• LTS 12.04.1 will not resolve domain.local websites

  I have done a brand new installation of the Ubuntu server (v12.10) with bind configured to have a dns zone of gdos.local and apache configured for said domain. With a brand new installation of Ubuntu desktop LTS I try to connect to www.gdos.local and all I get is: Server not found Firefox can't find the server at www.gdos.local. Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com However if I change the domain to gdos.tmp and type in www.gdos.tmp, I get the internal website. If I change it to mybusiness.local , I get the same error message. If I use a Microsoft os, this works fine, all three domains resolve to a webpage. I have searched the internet flat for the past week on dns issues but have not come up with a solution. I have followed instructions from removing dnsmasq to editing like resolv.conf (in some very strange places) and I still have no joy on getting the .local domain extension to work. I can safely say the issue is not with the server but with the desktops because if the issue was server related the Microsoft OS's would not resolve it either. I have done several installs of the desktop in an effort to make sure that I did not break anything while trying to fix this. Please can anyone point to a workable solution for fixing the .local domain extension. Thank you Mark Hollander

• Why is my vhosts file interfering with my apache deployment?

  When I enable my vhosts file (i.e. uncomment this line: Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf) I am unable to reach localhost. I /am/ able to reach the last virtual host listed in my vhosts file: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/epwbst" ServerName epwbst </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/pxproj" ServerName pxproj </VirtualHost> Typing pxproj in my browser brings up the expected web content. But I am unable to reach epwbst or localhost. If I re-comment the vhost line in my httpd.conf, I am able to reach local host (i.e. "It works!") but obviously am unable to reach my virtual hosts. I don't know how to continue troubleshooting this. Why can't I reach localhost when I've got my vhosts turned on? OS: Mac OS X 10.7 Server version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix)

• Use one home directory for more than one operating system

  I want to configure the same user account across multiple operating systems. Right now, I'm set up for general use in Mac OS 10.6.6 "Snow Leopard," and I have about 200gb of files in my home directory (/Users/justjake/). I want to use this user (and home directory) for other operating systems on other partitions. For example, I have Mac OS 10.5 installed on a 12gb partition. How can I share permissions, user accounts across my two operating systems? Would moving the my /Users directory from 10.6 to it's own partition then mounting it using /etc/fstab solve my issue?

  I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors... • Lag spikes at full CPU usage, maybe video card

  I am posting this thread in hurry so few things may be missed (I will update tomorrow). My PC specs: Motherboard Name - Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 CPU Type - DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, 1800 MHz (9 x 200) OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate OS Kernel Type - 32-bit OS Version - 6.1.7601 I bougth a new video card one month ago. GeForce 210. I didn't have any problems. I wanted to overclock it, in other words: "Play with it". So I installed Gigabyte EasyBoost from CD and overclocked the GPU 590 + 110 mhz, memory to max to 960mhz from 800mhz. Benchmarks showed a little bit bigger score. Then I overclocked shader clock from 1405 to [..] (don't remeber really). So I was playing Modern Warfare 2 when off sudden computer froze when I wanted to select team, I was afk before that. I had to reset CMOS. After that I had problems with Skype: unread messages and no sound. Then I figured it out that when ever I open EasyBoost - Skype starts to glitch again. Now I use EVGA Precission X. Now after a month, I cleaned computer and closed the case, it was open all the time. I started to overclock GPU clock only (just a bit) because there was no problems that would stop me. So sometimes on heavy CPU load graphics starts to lag. Dragging a window is painful to watch too. Sometimes the screen freezes for 5 to 10 seconds (I can see that hard disk activity is maximal). You may say that CPU fault it is, isn't it? But sometimes lag spikes starts randomly when CPU load is at maximum. All 3 benchmark softwares (PerformanceTest, NovaBench and MSI Kombustor) shows that performance of my video card has dropped about 25%. BUT! CPU score is lower too. I ignored these problems but when I refreshed Windows Experience Index I was shocked. Month before (in latvian language but not so hard to understand): Now (upgraded RAM): This happened when I tried to capture Minecraft with Fraps on underclocked GPU to 580mhz (def: 590mhz): All drivers are up to date. Average CPU temperature from 55°C to 75°C (at 70°C sometimes starts these lag spikes). Video card's tempratures are from 45°C to 60°C (very hard to reach 60°C). So my hope is that the video card is fine, cause this card is very new and I want to upgrade CPU anyways. Aplogies for my mistakes in vocabulary (I am trying to type this as fast I can).

• Ubuntu Lenove OCZ Agility3 - No Grub after install

  I've tried a dualboot (Win7 + Ubuntu) installation it on a Lenovo E330 with Agility3 240 Gigs... Conclusions: Ubuntu:: Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 ( 21.06.2012 ) is not able to install grub in a bootable way. Grub will be installed and does update-grub during Installation, recognizes also the Win OS. But after a restart it boots directly to Windows.This is directly connected to the OCZ Agility3. On a good old fashion harddisk (those with the moving parts) Ubuntu is capable to install grub with no problem in a bootable manner. PinguyOS:: PinguyOS 12.04 LTS x86_64 (which is a Ubuntu based distro) is able to handle the Grub installation on OCZ Agility3. However they both use Grub 1.99... What i did:: Installed Windows. Installed Ubuntu. Installed PinguyOS. Grub Updates:: Grub updates are only through Pinguy OS possible, this means you have to edit the Ubuntu Grub entries manually after Kernelupdates on Ubuntu, in the PiguyOS sytem.. What i've already tried: Firmwareupgrade OCZ (livestick, successfull) Install Ubuntu Grub to sda Install Ubuntu Grub to sdc (Ubuntu Partion) Install Ubuntu Grub to /boot update-grub manually after install restore grub any ideas appreciated..

  The need - This question is relevant for all of those who want to bypass their corporate's annoying VPN, and access their work/corporate network from their private computer, especially if the corporate VPN client software can't run on their private computer. Homework: this question is very similar to this one and this one, which aren't answered :( The challange - Can't run the corporate VPN client from the private computer, so converted the work laptop to a VMWare Virtual Machine. The VPN client is working fine inside the Guest VM, now we want to share it with the Host (the private computer) The specs: * The private computer (Host OS) is Mac OS X Lion 64bit * The corporate laptop (Guest VM) is WinXP 32bit, running in Bridged network mode * The VPN client on the Guest VM is is Checkpoint SecuRemote NGX R60 HFA03 * While the VPN is running in the Guest VM, the Host can still ping the Guest and vice versa

• Volume size doesn't match Disk size after gparted expansion

  I just expanded a basic disk on a Windows XP VM from 15gb to 40 gb using GPARTED LiveCD (0.5.2-11). I didn't notice anything unusual during the expansion; but after I rebooted back into Windows, the disk capacity doesn't match the disk size as it should (only 1 volume on the disk). The disk shows as 40gb; but the C: volume still shows the original size. I've tried expanding the disk again with GPARTED (no change), and using VMware converter and have it adjust the size of the volume during the process (complains about a lack of space of snapshot error inside the os). The volume has 27% free space so I don't think it is a space issue. Chkdsk doesn't seem to find anything wrong either. The OS seems to run just fine, it doesn't see the additional space however. Any ideas?

• qemu/virt-manager no permisson on shared folder

  I have a strange problem. Iam trying to create a shared folder via the add-hardware-filesystem option. For Type and Modus i choose Passtrought and for Driver Path. The Source Path is /free and target is mytag. I mount it with: mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio mytag /mnt/test -oversion=9p2000.L Everything worked without problems. But when i enter /mnt/test and do a ls, i get "ls: Öffnen von Verzeichnis . nicht möglich: Keine Berechtigung" in english something like "ls: cant open folder . no permission" I set permissions of /free to 777 recursivly but nothing changed. Also tried some other modes in virt-manager but nothing changes. Do you have any clues, what i am doing wrong? The guest-os ist Ubuntu 12.04 and the host-os is Ubuntu 11.10 Thank you for your help.

• Partitioning a bootable Flash drive

  Is it possible to have a 2 partition Flash drive that looks like the following: A partition that is bootable to OS X (this will require a GUID partition table) A second partition formatted either FAT32 or NTFS that is readable on both OS X and various flavors of Windows I have set up a disk using Disk Utility on the Mac, and it boots fine with a second FAT32 partition... but Windows does not see it. Any flavor of Windows wants to format the entire drive. Has anyone done this, and if so, can you explain the steps you followed? EDIT: Making it bootable is no problem. I have that. I'm wondering how to make the second partition on a Flash drive visible to Windows. It's possible that the "second partition" is the problem, and I need Windows to be first, and HFS to be second. I'll try that tonight.

My problem: I want to create a bootable dvd to be able to restore same state(OS, configuration and apps) on another hardware(server). Some notes: I prefer ubuntu but my linux can be a different distributions if needed. w I prefer final result (bootable dvd) be simple and easy to use as installing a linux(ubuntu). I prefer a bootable DVD but if it's not possible, any other solution like partial backup/package even if needed to install first OS and then apply the package/backup/... can be good.   Hi there, I'm not quite sure if such questions are allowed on SU. I was just wondering whether there is a sketch program like Adobe Ideas for iPad that has an infinite canvas but for OSX. It need not be feature rich and all that. Very simple, just for sketching out some stuff without thinking about the space. I was thinking about some vector tool where I could infinitely zoom in and draw. I'm sure you get the idea of what I am looking for. Any hints? OS is OS X.

• How to get which file is requested to open using a mac application?

  i have created an mac application which can be open my file extensions. But when i tested it, i dont get the path of the file requested to open using the application, instead i got the "psn_0_151589". I checked it for itunes, textedit, xcode and other applications. • Non-OEM Biometric Software?

  Most of us with fingerprint readers and such devices probably use the software provided by the vendor, to enable biometric OS login or single sign-on functionality. However, I've recently wondered if there is any third-party software that will do the same thing. This would be similar to how you don't need the manufacturer's software to use a scanner, printer, or webcam - you just use their drivers and your choice of software. Is there anything like this for fingerprint readers or other biometric devices? Free or Open Source projects are preferred, but I'd be interested in learning about any existing solutions regardless. I personally am particularly interested in Windows-compatible software, but I'll leave the query open for any OS.

• dell vostro 1310 with nVidia 8400M display problem

  Hi everyone, i hope someone can help me with this problem. I have a Dell vostro 1310 Laptop with 32 bit vista and a 8400M nVidia chip. Recently i have noticed performance issues when my girlfriend was playing Sims 3, and then one day i turned it on and all i got was a thick white line at the bottom of the screen. i heard the OS start up so automatically i thought it was a damaged screen, but i had doubts so i plugged it into an external display via the vga port. it worked but everything appart worm the OS choice menu looks distorted beyond belief. even the bios screen had multicoloured lines running down the screen. The resolution is non existant, the screen only shows a 256 colour pallette and is heavily distorted. i barely managed to get to the device manager where i found the gfx card with an exclamation mark. does anybody have suggestions? should i buy a new mobo or are repairs possible? thanks in advance

• non-GUI connection to local Hyper-V VM without network

  I have a virtual machine on Hyper-V manager (Windows 2008 R2) without a network configured on the VM. From a powershell script running on the host Windows server, I would like to query into the OS of that local VM for certain information (i.e. if a given process has finished completion). I am using codeplex's pshyperv module (https://pshyperv.codeplex.com/) to interact with Hyper-V manager, but the only cmdlet to connect to the vm is 'New-VMConnectSession', which launches a 'vmconnect.exe' connection to the VM. Since vmconnect.exe is essentially RDP, this is not very script-friendly. From within a host's powershell script, is there any way to send a command to a local virtual machine's OS and receive output, if no network is configured on the VM? (I believe Vmware's 'vmrun' utility has this capability) Another way to ask this question: Does Hyper-V have a non-GUI-based form of vmconnect.exe? (PS. Not sure if this was more stackoverflow or serverfault)
