• A tip: Updating Data in SharePoint 2010 using REST API

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Here is a little tip that will save you hours of head scratching. See there are two ways to update data in SharePoint using REST based API. A PUT request is used to update an entire entity. If no values are specified for fields in the entity, the fields will be set to default values. A MERGE request is used to update only those field values that have changed. Any fields that are not specified by the operation will remain set to their current value.   Now, sit back and think about it. You are going to update the entire entity! Hmm. Which means, you need to a) specify every column value, and b) ensure that the read only values match what was supplied to you. What a pain in the donkey! • Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • Process video (canon) mov files

  Well i would like to program something to process HDR made by magic lantern a canon add on. That doesnt change the format its just some kind of add on, that can produce HDR video. Its a bit complex to make such videos so i would like to use some math and make it myself and makee the software freeware (as a thanks to the creators of magic lantern). The problem with that HDR that normal converts have a lot of artifacts, and i would like to make something (for free) using some new algorithms. I have made, this works fine on individual images, my ideas work. I would want to do this on that canon 60d video format. Canons mov format, and am so far out of luck to read that out. It must be possible dough as i know in some projects they do it too. I would not like to export a movie first to jpg and then back to video as that requires a lot of disk space, i would like to retrieve individual frames, do my math based multiple frames, and then build a new movie on it. The output video can be of any type, avi or mov again. Does anyone know of a library who can do that ? (read and save), So i could use it in a C# project (i prefer C# above c++, but c++ is an option to program in to for me).

• Should I encrypt data in database?

  I have a client, for which I'm going to do an Web application about patient care, managing patients, consults, history, calendars, everything about that basically. The problem is that this is sensitive data, patient history and such. The client insists on encrypting the data at the database level, but I think this is going to deteriorate the performance of the web app. ( But maybe I shouldn't be worried about this ) I've read the laws about data protection on health issues ( Portugal ), but isn't very specific about this ( I just questioned them about this, I'm waiting for their response ). I've read the following link, but my question is different, should I encrypt the data in the database, or not. One problem that I foresee in encrypting data, is that I'm going to need a key, this could be the user password, but we all know how user passwords are ( 12345 etc etc ), and generating a key I would have to store it somewhere, this means that the programmer, dba, whatever could have access to it, any thoughts on this? Even adding an random salt to the user password isn't going to solve the problem since I can always access it, and therefore decrypt the data.

• Freeze on Boot WindowsXP

  Ok first off I know I should have Windows 7 but i don't Its a really old computer and i'm not sure if it can run the latest OS of ubuntu but i'm trying any whay so here are my specs or what i could have gathered from the computer(viruses are every where and most of the drivers are gone) Specs OS WindowsXP(it isn't letting me know which one that is blocked) Graphics card(can't access device manger it is blocked also) graphics card is 2003-2004 era though ram 512mb last time i checked USB(Drivers Gone) Wireless Card(Drivers Gone) Lan Card(Drivers Gone) Audio(Drivers Gone) CD Drive (it runs and works but i can't check its properties that's blocked to) Computer Dell Inspiron 600m Good News I have the Driver CD for everything Bad News I Don't have the OS CD I know the Computer is trash but i want to flash it anyway and just install linux(ubuntu) The second problem is it doesn't even want to load the CD all the way it is just stuck at the Ubuntu Screen with all the bubbles orange and if i resart it just does it again. any help would be nice. EDIT: okay i tried the first comment and it said i need a firmware file from http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware the firmware is b43/ucode5.fw, b43-open/ucode5.fw is there any other way of installing this firmware without being in the Ubuntu because what I have read is I need to be in Ubuntu to do this... Thanks for all the help you are giving me i have read your comments but i don't want to wait another two hours downloading that if i can get it working on this...

• Usb stick too slow to benchmark?

  I have a Core 2 Duo [email protected] with 3GB RAM. After some time using XUbuntu 10.10 on an 8GB stick I decided to switch to 12.04 and put it onto a 32GB stick (Transcend). I use an EXT4 with no journalling, noatime etc set. /tmp and /run is using tmpfs. And it is REALLY slow. MUCH slower than the old Xubuntu on the 8GB stick. Starting takes minutes, all applications "fade" because they respond too slow. I first thought that the NVidia graphics card is responsible for this, because there seem to be some known problems with that. Doing the adjustment (uncheck the sync checkbox) did not help. I believe the root cause is that the access to the USB stick is extremely slow. Running the read benchmark of the disk utility then brought the message "disk is too slow to benchmark"! BUT: When I do the same benchmark with the live CD I get around 20MB read performance and have a very responsive system! So how can I find out what is going one here?

  When a browser displays the HTML sent from a web server it parses the received markup into a Document Object Model, or DOM, which models the markup as a hierarchical structure. Each element in the markup - the <form> element, <div> elements, <p> elements, <input> elements, and so on - are represented as a node in the DOM and can be programmatically accessed from client-side script. What's more, the nodes that make up the DOM have functions that can be called to perform certain behaviors; what functions are available depend on what type of element the node represents. One function common to most all node types is focus, which gives keyboard focus to the corresponding element. The focus function is commonly used in data entry forms, search pages, and login screens to put the user's keyboard cursor in a particular textbox when the web page loads so that the user can start typing in his search query or username without having to first click the textbox with his mouse.   I wish to add the ability to zoom-in, zoom-out, rotate and move the view in a top-down view over a collection of points and lines in a large 2d map. I split the map into a grid so I only need to render the points that are 'near' the camera. My question is, how do I render a point A(Xp,Yp) assuming the following details: Offset of the camera pov from the origin of the map is: Xc, Yc Meaning the camera center is positioned on top of that point. If there's a point in Xc, Yc it is positioned in the center of the screen. The rotation angle is: alpha The scale is: S Read my answer first. I am thinking there is more optimized solution, thanks. My question is how to include the following improvement: I read in the AS3 Bible book that: In regards to ShaderInput, You can use these methods to coerce Pixel Bender to crunch huge sets of data masquerading as images, without doing too much work on the ActionScript side to make them look like images. Meaning if I am performing the same linear function on a lot of items, I can do it all at once if I use Shaders correctly and save processing time. Does anyone know how that is accomplished? • Trying to wrap my head around class structure for domain-specific language

  My work is mostly in embedded systems programming in C, and the proper class structure to pull this off eludes me. Currently we communicate via C# and Visual Basic with a large collection of servos, pumps, and sensors via a USB-to-CAN hid device. Right now, it is quite cumbersome to communicate with the devices. To read the firmware version of controller number 1 you would use: SendCan(Controller,1,ReadFirmwareVersion) or SendCan(8,1,71) This sends three bytes on the CAN bus: (8,1,71) Connected to controllers are various sensors. SendCan(Controller,1,PassThroughCommand,O2Sensor,2,ReadO2) would tell Controller number 1 to pass a command to O2 Sensor number 2 to read O2 by sending the bytes 8,1,200,16,2,0 I would like to develop a domain-specific language for this setup. Instead of commands issued like they are currently, commands would be written like this: Controller1.SendCommand.O2Sensor2.ReadO2 to send the bytes 8,1,200,16,0 What's the best way to do this? Some machines have 20 O2 Sensors, others have 5 controllers, so the numbers and types of controllers and sensors, pumps, etc. aren't static.

• Solutions for "Maintenance Mode"

  Given a web application running across 10+ servers, what techniques have you put in place for doing things like altering the state of your website so that you can implement certain features. For instance, you might want to: Restrict Logins/Disable Certain Features Turn Site to "Read Only" Turn Site to Single "Maintenance Mode" page. Doing any of the above is pretty trivial. You can throw a particular "flag" in an .ini file, or add a row/value to a site_options table in your database and just read that value and do the appropriate thing. But these solutions have their problems. Disadvantages/Problems For instance, if you use a file for your application, and you want to switch off a certain feature temporarily, then you need to update this file on all servers. So then you might want to look at running something like ZooKeeper, but you are probably overcomplicating things. So then, you might decide that you want to store these "feature" flags in a database. But then you are obviously adding unncessary queries to each page request. So you think to yourself, that you will throw memcached in to the mix and just cache the query. Then you just retrieve all of your "Features" from memcached and add a 2ms~ latency to your application on every page. So to get around this, you decide to use a two tier-cache system, whereby you use an inmemory cache on each machine, (like Apc/Redis etc). This would work, but then it gets complicated, because you would have to set the key/hash life to perhaps 60 seconds, so that when you purge/invalidate the memcached object storing your "Features" result, your on machine cache is prompt enough to get the the new states. What suggestions might you have? Keeping in mind that optimization/efficiency is the priority here.

• How do I add a boot from cd option to yaboot?

  So I'm dual-booting Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my iMac G5 powepc alongside Mac OS X and I want to add a boot cd option to yaboot because I'm trying to boot a scratched Mac OS X installation DVD that takes a while to read and the frst bootstrap moves on too fast. How do I edit the timeout for the first bootstrap anyways? So, my main question is, how do I add a cd booting option to yaboot and then, how doI boot it? The devalias from OpenFrmware tells me that 1 have 2 cd-rom instaled, on is /ht/pci@3/ata-6/disk@0 and the other on ends with a 1 instead of a zero. These are the contents of my yaboot.conf file: yaboot.conf generated by the Ubuntu installer run: "man yaboot.conf" for details. Do not make changes until you have!! see also: /usr/share/doc/yaboot/examples for example configurations. • Advice needed on Process - Service Design

  Need some advice from experts on designing a flow. Create a service that will read a csv file which may contain anywhere over 6000+ rows of individual ids as shown in the sample below. Need to read that file and go to oracle database and fetch a vname,vnumber,vid of each id in the csv and then go to document repository i.e. Oracle UCM and download all documents matching vname,vnumber,vid there can be =0 documents for each vname,vnumber,vid and save them on a file system. UCM exposes a webservice to dowload the documents. Finally create a new csv appending the filenames that are downloaded for each id. Need to keep track of any errors but need to make sure to go over the whole ids in the csv to download the documents and skip in case of errors. Need some advice on how to go about designing this as there may be over 6000+ rows in a csv file and looping it and hitting the database for each individual id and then hitting a UCM may be a bit expensive so open for any idea. How to go by designing this solution. Wondering if messaging can be helpful here or offloading process of getting the vname,vnumber,vid to pl/sql packages, creating staging tables etc. Initial csv that contains ids: **ID** 12345a 12s345 3456fr we9795 we9797 Final csv output: **ID Files Downloaded from UCM** 12345a a.pdf,b.doc,d.txt 12s345 a1.pdf,s2.pdf,f4.gif 3456fr b.xls we9795 we9797 x.doc Thanks

• How to better explain complex software process in software specs?

  I'm really struggling with my software specs. I am not a professional programmer but enjoy doing it for fun and made some software that I want to sell later but I'm not happy with the code quality. So I wanted to hire a real developer to rewrite my software in a more professional way so it will be maintainable by other developers in the future. I read and found some sample specs and made my own by applying their structure to my document and wanted to get my developer friend to read it and give me advice. After an hour and a half he understood exactly what I was trying to do and how I did it(my algorithms,stack,etc.). How can I get better at explaining things to developers? I add many details and explanations for everything(including working code) but I'm unsure the best way I can learn to pass detailed domain knowledge(my software applies big data, machine learning, graph theory to finance). My end goal is to get them to understand as much as possible from the document and then ask anything they do not understand, but right now it seems they need to extract alot of information from me. How can I get better at communicating domain knowledge to developers?

• Will Ubuntu Live CD move MFT to resize NTFS volumes?

  I have a feeling some will consider this a duplicate, but please hear me out. I've been reading tons of questions and threads around this but have never really found an answer for this specifically. I want to shrink my NTFS partition to make room for a Ubuntu install, so I can dual boot them. However when shrinking the NTFS volume in Windows disk management, it will only go so far as the MFT is sitting near the end of the volume. I've read plenty of posts about why it does this, and how difficult/dangerous it is to move the MFT etc. I've also read that Perfect Disk can apparently do it under it's trial period, but I remain cautious to try this method. I was wondering however if the disk partitioning utility included in the Ubuntu install wizard handles the moving of the MFT when dragging the partition boundaries. It all seems too simple that you simply tell it the new size you want it to be. Would it tell me if it couldn't resize by the amount you requested if the MFT was an issue, or move it for you if it were able. I'm concerned it might corrupt the MFT and the volume, even though I doubt the install wizard would be so daft. So what exactly is the deal with the partition resizing tool in the Ubuntu install wizard? Will it safely resize my NTFS volume despite the location of my MFT? Thanks in advance.

• How to structure reading of commands given at a(n interactive) CLI prompt?

  Let's say I have a program called theprogram (the marketing team was on strike when the product was to be named). I start that program by typing, perhaps not surprisingly, the program name as a command into a command prompt. After that, I get into a loop (from the users standpoint, an interactive command-line prompt), where one command will be read from the user, and depending on what command was given, the program will execute some instructions. I have been doing something like the following (in C-like pseudocode): main_loop{ in=read_input(); if(in=="command 1") do_something(); else if(in=="command 2") do_something_else(); ... } (In a real program, I would probably encapsulate more things into different procedures, this is just an example.) This works well for a small amount of commands, but let's say you have 100, 1000 or even 10 000 of them (the manual would be huge!). It is clearly a bad idea to have 10 000 ifs and else ifs after each other, for instance, the program would be hard to read, hard to maintain, contain a lot of boilerplate code... Yeah, you don't want to do that, so what approach would you recommend me to use (I will probably never use 10 000 commands in a program, but the solution should, at least preferably, be able to scale to that kind of massive (?) problems. The solution doesn't have to allow for arguments to the commands)?

• Laser range finder, what language to use? Beginner advice

  I hope this is the right place. I am a programming beginner, and I want to make a laser range finder, and I need advice about how to proceed etc. In a few weeks I will get a lot of dirt cheap 3-5V lasers and some cheap usb webcams. I will point the laser and webcam in parallel, and somehow use trigonometry and programming to determined distance. I have seen online that others made done it this way, I have purposefully not looked at the details too much because I want to develop it on my own, and learn, but I know the general outline. I have a general idea of how to proceed. The program loads in a picture from the webcam, and I dunno how images work really, but I imagine there is a format that is basically an array of RGB values.. is this right? I will load in the red values, and find the most red one. I know the height difference between the laser and the cam. I know the center dot in the image, I know the redmost dot. I'm sure there's some way to figure out some range there. TO THE POINT: 1) Is my reasoning sound thus far, especially in terms of image analysis? I don't need complete solutions, just general points 2) What I need to figure out, is what platform to use. I have an arduino... apparently, I've read it's too weak to process images. Read that online. I know some C I know some Python I have Matlab. Which is the best option? I do not need high sampling rates, I have not decided on whether it should be automated or whether I should make a GUI with a button to press for samples. I will keep it simple and expand I think. I also do not need it to be super accurate, I'm just having fun here. Advice!

• Help trying/downloading ubuntu

  I can't try ubuntu. Every time i put in my disk and press try, it shows the ubuntu sign with the dots under it than it shows a command screen basically blinking saying that it closed and canceled applications belonging to ubuntu... Than I tried to download it from the disk... same thing. Than, because I have windows, I tried to download it from the website and it worked. I rebooted my computer and went into the Ubuntu option just to find a blinking command screen again... How do I get ubuntu to work? What does happen (with the command screen) is that it shows commands that are blinking to fast for me to read the whole thing, and then it stops after like a minute or two of blinking. The only thing I do get to read is that Ubuntu commanded some applications to shut down. In the CD one it only has like 5 error messages, and when I reboot and select Ubuntu, there are over a hundred error messages. With the live-cd I have to shut down my computer to use it again. With the reboot and clicking ubuntu option it reboots by itself. I expect it to actually start up with no error messages. UPDATE I've been trying to start Ubuntu for the last couple of days, and I noticed on my last try that it said "SIGNAL 15 RECEIVED"... I know about boot repairing, but how can I use it, If i cant boot ubuntu?? I heard about terrible problems with windows 8-linux dual boot, but I really need ubuntu because of school. I read many tutorials how to install ubuntu next to windows8, but despite that a problem accured. Here is what I have done. I have MSI GE60, windows(64bit) is running on mSATA SSD C drive. HDD is divided to two partitions for windows and I left there 50GB for ubuntu. I downloaded ubuntu 12.04.3desktop-amd64(64bit), created bootable USB using Universal USB Installer (recommended on Ubuntu site). I disabled USB legacy support (that Ubuntu could be installed in EFI mode- I was following instructions on Ubuntu site), and also Secure Boot (windows is now angry with me because I turned it off- when I start windows it informs me I should enable that). I inserted USB rebooted computer and chose install ubuntu, divided free 50GB space to swap(2000MB) and rest as ext4 main storage space for ubuntu. Installation passed normally, Ubuntu then asked me to reboot computer. After reboot windows 8 started. Now I can't start ubuntu. When I restart win8 to uefi there is possibility to boot ubuntu, but when I choose it, it crashes. When I choose try ubunfu from connected USB, nothing happend, still dark screed. What is wrong? Can you help me? I am in hurry to do it because of school. Thanks.

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

• How to recover lost files after an install

  I'm a newbie learning along the way. I recently installed a 2nd hdd into my ubuntu box. Have one of about 160g which runs ubuntu 12.04. And the new hdd was 1 tb, used for holding videos. I had set up 2nd drive as ext3 I believe. And set up folders on it to hold the videos. Worked great. Also thought I had set it up for auto mount. I was able to read and write on it. Etc. Computer froze, so had to reboot it. When I did, system would not reboot: hung on the Ubuntu screen with 5 dots. I hit a few buttons and the command screen showed up, indicating that my 2nd hdd would not mount. Stopped up whole system. Tried rebooting, no go. Had to reinstall ubuntu on the 1st hdd. Did not apparently touch the 2nd one. Well, when I got it up and running, my 2nd hdd mounted automatically (yeah!), but now I cannot find my videos I already had on it. I had not put any more than about 30g of videos on it, but now when I read its Properties, it says I'm using about 50g. So, I'm wondering if somewhere in that, buried, are my 17 videos. Any help in recovering this? Thanks!

• What is the best practice for reading a large number of custom settings from a text file?

  So I have been looking through some code I wrote a few years ago for an economic simulation program. Each simulation has a large number of settings that can be saved to a file and later loaded back into the program to re-run the same/similar simulation. Some of the settings are optional or depend on what is being simulated. The code to read back the parameters is basically one very large switch statement (with a few nested switch statements). I was wondering if there is a better way to handle this situation. One line of the settings file might look like this: #RA:1,MT:DiscriminatoryPriceKDoubleAuction,OF:Demo Output.csv,QM:100,NT:5000,KP:0.5 //continues... • Problem with understanding how to start

  Okay, this might be a little off-topic but i try anyway. Sorry to bother. So i'm working as sysadmin for at least 5 years now and i quite enjoy IT field in general. Somehow i was never interested in programming much but always want to learn something at least easy and for personal usage. As sysadmin i need scripting skills so learn shell scripting without much problems, i also try to learn pascal, delphi, basic over time and must recent was python. Well, my problem is when i try to learn programming i just can't apply what i learn from the books to the real word. What i mean is i understand there are data structures, algorithms, variables, lib's, if-then logic, etc. but i just can't understand how to apply this things when i want to do real things. Like i want to get a something simple as parse web page, i draw a quick algorithm like get a web page, find a word on it and write a to file, on the paper everything look simple but when i get to the coding i just stuck pretty much from the start. I try read code of the real programs that just totally confusing especially big parts with many classes so i'm just quickly lost a trail what this code do. I think i just lack some fundamentals to see a big picture but don't really know what this might be? Or maybe i just don't have a passion to programming at all... My best bet was a shell scripting so i have really no problems to write complex scripts but this just not enough. Recently i was read around 5 or 6 python books because everyone say it's so easy even kid can code something but still no much luck, python is good and easy but i can't make something harder then a prodecurial style code like in bash for easy things but when i want harder things i'm still stuck. In college i was also not a math and tech guy and like to study non-tech stuff mostly like economy, psychology maybe that my problem? Anyway any advice would be greatly appriciated.
