• SQL JOIN with two or more tables as output - most efficient way?

  I have an SQL query that executes a LEFT JOIN on another table, then outputs all results that could be coupled into a designated table. I then have a second SQL query that executes the LEFT JOIN again, then outputs the results that could not be coupled to a designated table. In code, this is something like: INSERT INTO coupledrecords SELECT b.col1, b.col2... s.col1, s.col2... FROM bigtable AS b LEFT JOIN smallertable AS s ON criterium WHERE s.col1 IS NOT NULL INSERT INTO notcoupledrecords SELECT b.col1, b.col2... bigtable AS b LEFT JOIN smallertable AS s ON criterium WHERE s.col1 IS NULL My question: I now have to execute the JOIN two times, in order to achieve what I want. I have a feeling that this is twice as slow as it could be. Is this true, and if yes, is there a way to do it more efficiently?

• SQL Server 2005: When clicking "Add" database I keep getting 'verify that the path or file exists'

  When I right click on "databases" in Sql Server 2005 Management Studio and then Attach... Add I get the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\SQL Server Management Studio\ Projects\Path\To\MDF\And\LDF\Files\ cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. The answer is easy - the MDF and LDF files where removed when Nant (by way of my dev machine) issued a drop command. But, after replacing the MDF and LDF files, I want to reattach the database but the above error keeps coming up when I select "Add". Also, I have already "unattached" the database in question and it no longer appears on the left under "databases". I have tried to replace a copy of the MDF and LDF files in the folder being referenced and that didn't work. Any ideas as to how to gracefully get rid of this error?

I thought I could do some self-joins to deal with this, but I am worried in the cases where the non-key fields have the same data in multiple rows.

• Disabling DNS Registration on Server 2008 R2

  I want to tell a server 2008 R2 machine to NOT register it's IP addresses in DNS. I go into the Advanced tab on IPv4 and turn off "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" simple! But... the addresses are updated in DNS anyway! And actually the A record is eventually removed from the DNS server. I've confirmed that the checkbox is off by looking at it myself, and by checking the RegistrationEnabled registry value for that adapter. Both confirm that the registration is off. I've turned of DNS debug logging on the DNS server and I can see DNS Update requests coming from the server in question! This should not happen. What's even odder is that eventually (several hours) the A record for the server (which I added by hand!) is removed from the DNS server. I've also confirmed that scavaging is off on both DNS servers in the domain. Ideas? Edits: Per the comment: The server has static IP addresses. However, it's got two of them on one adapter. Since I'm in a VM (HyperV) environment I just spun up a second adapter and moved the second IP to the second adapter. I set the first adapter to auto-register (since that's the IP I want anyway) and the second adapter to NOT auto-register. We'll see if this is any better. Not any better. On a reboot of the server the registration was removed from DNS. Seems both cards are still contacting the server. Based on the DNS log the card that shouldn't register in DNS is registering a 'delete' request. And then the card that should register is registering an add request but that's ignored. I'm totally confused at this point.

• Unable to ping domain.local, but can ping server.domain.local

  I have a single windows 2008 server running active directory, group policy, and DNS. DHCP is running from the firewall (this is because there are multiple branch locations, and each location has its own firewall supplying DHCP. But, for this problem, the server and workstation are at the same location). On an XP workstation, if I try to visit \\domain.local or ping domain.local, the workstation can't find it. A ping returns Ping request could not find host domain.local. If I try to visit \\server or \\server.domain.local or ping server or server.domain.local, I'm able to connect normally. If I ping or visit domain.local on the server, I'm able to connect normally. A-Records are in place in the DNS service for server, domain.local, and server.domain.local. A reverse lookup zone also is enabled and PTR records are in place. If I wait 20-30 minutes, I am eventually able to ping and visit domain.local--but, when attempting to ping, it takes 30 second to return an IP address. I am also unable to join a new workstation to the domain during this wait period. If I try, the error message returned is "network path not found". Is there something I'm missing?

• SMO restore of SQL database doesn't overwrite

  I'm trying to restore a database from a backup file using SMO. If the database does not already exist then it works fine. However, if the database already exists then I get no errors, but the database is not overwritten. The "restore" process still takes just as long, so it looks like it's working and doing a restore, but in the end the database has not changed. I'm doing this in Powershell using SMO. The code is a bit long, but I've included it below. You'll notice that I do set $restore.ReplaceDatabase = $true. Also, I use a try-catch block and report on any errors (I hope), but none are returned. Any obvious mistakes? Is it possible that I'm not reporting some error and it's being hidden from me? • How to diagnose repeated "Starting up database '<dbname>'"

  I have a SQL 2008 server which is predominantly used as a development server, in the last two weeks it has been having occasional "fits", I have isolated the cause of these fits as CHECKDB being run almost continuiously, the following log information is logged to the Windows Event Log (Source: MSSQLSERVER, Category: Server): Event: 1073758961, Message: Starting up database 'DBName1'. Event: 1073758961, Message: Starting up database 'DBName2'. Event: 1073759397, Message: CHECKDB for database 'DBName1' finished without errors on 2010-07-19 20:29:26.993 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required. Event: 1073759397, Message: CHECKDB for database 'DBName1' finished without errors on 2010-07-19 20:29:26.993 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required. This is repeated every 1-2 seconds untill SQL Server is restarted or the offending databases are detatched. I initially thought that it was a problem with the databases so I took a backup and restored them to a SQL Express instance, all of the data is in tact, and CHECKDB runs without problem. The two databases that were causing a problem last week were not being used; so I took full backups of them and detached the databases, this resolved the problem. However at 0100 GMT this morning to other totally unrelated databases started showing the same problems. There is nothing in the event log to suggest that something happened to the server such as a restart, there are no messages about processes crashing or issues being detected with the storage controller. Speaking to the owner of the company this computer has suffered from "gremlins" in the past, however advice was taken and the motherboard was replaced and the computer rebuilt, memory and processor are the same. Stats: O/S: Windows 2008 Standard Build 6002 CPU: 2x Pentium Dual-Core E5200 @ 2.5GHz RAM: 2GB SQL: 2008 Standard 10.0.2531 Edit: someone posted then deleted a comment about AutoClose, it was turned on on the databases affected. It seems that best practice is to disable it so I have done that with the folllowing. EXECUTE sp_MSforeachdb 'IF (''?'' NOT IN (''master'', ''tempdb'', ''msdb'', ''model'')) EXECUTE (''ALTER DATABASE [?] SET AUTO_CLOSE OFF WITH NO_WAIT'')' I won't know if the problem recurs for some time so I am still open to further answers.

• Why isn't the backup file created when running sqlcmd from remote machine?

  I tried running the sqlcmd from a remote host to do a simple backup of a sql 2008 database. The command goes something like this: sqlcmd -s xxx.xxx.xxx.xx -U username -P some_password -Q "Backup database [db] to \ disk = 'c:\test_backup.bak' with format" I get a succesfull message but the file isn't created. When I run this on the sql manager on the same machine, it works. I thought it was permission problems, but I'm using the same username in both cases. Any thoughts?

  Continuing from Part 1  , our Migration Checklist continues: Step 5: Update statistics It is always a good idea to update the statistics of the database that you have just installed or migrated. To do this, run the following command against the target database: sp_updatestats The sp_updatestats system stored procedure runs the UPDATE STATISTICS command against every user and system table in the database.  However, a word of caution: running the sp_updatestats against a database with a compatibility level below 90 (SQL Server 2005) will reset the automatic UPDATE STATISTICS settings for every index and statistics of every table in the database. You may therefore want to change the compatibility mode before you run the command. Another thing you should remember to do is to ensure the new database has its AUTO_CREATE_STATISTICS and AUTO_UPDATE_STATISTICS properties set to ON. You can do so using the ALTER DATABASE command or from the SSMS. Step 6: Set database options You may have to change the state of a database after it has been restored. If the database was changed to single-user or read-only mode before backup, the restored copy will also retain these settings. This may not be an issue when you are manually restoring from Enterprise Manager or the Management Studio since you can change the properties. However, this is something to be mindful of if the restore process is invoked by an automated job or script and the database needs to be written to immediately after restore. You may want to check the database’s status programmatically in such cases. Another important option you may want to set for the newly restored / attached database is PAGE_VERIFY. This option specifies how you want SQL Server to ensure the physical integrity of the data. It is a new option from SQL Server 2005 and can have three values: CHECKSUM (default for SQL Server 2005 and latter databases), TORN_PAGE_DETECTION (default when restoring a pre-SQL Server 2005 database) or NONE. Torn page detection was itself an option for SQL Server 2000 databases. From SQL Server 2005, when PAGE_VERIFY is set to CHECKSUM, the database engine calculates the checksum for a page’s contents and writes it to the page header before storing it in disk. When the page is read from the disk, the checksum is computed again and compared with the checksum stored in the header.  Torn page detection works much like the same way in that it stores a bit in the page header for every 512 byte sector. When data is read from the page, the torn page bits stored in the header is compared with the respective sector contents. When PAGE_VERIFY is set to NONE, SQL Server does not perform any checking, even if torn page data or checksums are present in the page header.  This may not be something you would want to set unless there is a very specific reason.  Microsoft suggests using the CHECKSUM page verify option as this offers more protection. Step 7: Map database users to logins A common database migration issue is related to user access. Windows and SQL Server native logins that existed in the source instance and had access to the database may not be present in the destination. Even if the logins exist in the destination, the mapping between the user accounts and the logins will not be automatic. You can use a special system stored procedure called sp_change_users_login to address these situations. The procedure needs to be run against the newly attached or restored database and can accept four parameters. Depending on what you want to do, you may be using less than four though. The first parameter, @Action, can take three values. When you specify @Action = ‘Report’, the system will provide you with a list of database users which are not mapped to any login. If you want to map a database user to an existing SQL Server login, the value for @Action will be ‘Update_One’. In this case, you will only need to provide the database user name and the login it will map to. So if your newly restored database has a user account called “bob” and there is already a SQL Server login with the same name and you want to map the user to the login, you will execute a query like the following: sp_change_users_login         @Action = ‘Update_One’,         @UserNamePattern = ‘bob’,         @LoginName = ‘bob’ If the login does not exist, you can instruct SQL Server to create the login with the same name. In this case you will need to provide a password for the login and the value of the @Action parameter will be ‘Auto_Fix’. If the login already exists, it will be automatically mapped to the user account. Unfortunately sp_change_users_login system stored procedure cannot be used to map database users to trusted logins (Windows accounts) in SQL Server.   I've got this kind of situation: I've got windows 2003 server with dns server on same machine. It is binded to adress for ex. siteA.com Now i want to add to this machine website which name will be siteB.com. I created a new website on IIS6 server with name siteB.com but I dont know how to set up a dns server. My primary DNS administrator created me an alias for my server and he describe it to me like this: 'site siteB.com is an aliase for siteA.com' and then he said that I have to configure my DNS server by my own. I've tried to add new alias in my existing DNS zone (for siteA.com) but it's binding FQDN name like this: siteB.SiteA.com which is wrong as I supose. Can anybody explain me how can I bind this 2 webiste to my server?

• How can I map a Windows group login to the dbo schema in a database?

  I have a database for which I want to restrict access to 3 named individuals. I thought I could do the following: Create a local Windows group on the database server and add the named individuals to it. Create a Windows login in SQL Server mapped to the local Windows group. Map the login to the "dbo" schema in the database, so that the users can access all objects without having to qualify them with the schema name. When I try to do step 3, I get the following error: Msg 15353, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 An entity of type database cannot be owned by a role, a group, an approle, or by principals mapped to certificates or asymmetric keys. I have tried to do this via the IDE, the sp_changedbowner sproc, and the ALTER AUTHORIZATION command, and I get the same error each time. After searching MSDN and Google, I find that this restriction is by design. Great, that's useful. Can anyone tell me: Why this restriction exists? It seems very arbitrary. More importantly, can I accomplish my requirement some other way? Other info that might be pertinent: The server is fully up to date with service packs and hotfixes. All objects in the database are owned by the "dbo" schema, and it's not feasible to change that. The database is running in compatibility level 80, and it's not feasible to change that to 90 yet. I am free to make any other changes (within reason, depending on what they are).

  I've started getting some errors in the App event log of one of our database servers (Windows 2003 & SQL Server 2005). The nightly full database backups are completing successfully however immediately after the job success is written to the event log there is a run of entries that say: SQLVDI: Loc=CVDS. Desc=Release(ClientAliveMutex). ErrorCode=(288)Attempt to release mutex not owned by caller. There's five of these logged - the server itself has more than 20 databases on it which are all backed up successfully. The server is backed up by Bacula using a VSS backup. Has anyone got any ideas what would be causing the errors? They seem to have started after a re-boot on Friday to install some patches which included KB960089. Edit: After getting the errors for a few days they've now stopped without any action on my part other than letting the backups continue as they were. It may be a coincidence but they stopped after Bacula completed its weekly full rather than the daily incremental backup.

  Hi, I'm searching for a Windows 2008 server in Europe, preferably in Germany or UK or anything with good routing to Denmark (as its where the primary traffic will be generated from). The server will be used as web server (asp.net mvc, php), mail server and database server. We are running a few sites with around 200 concurrent users, which isn't much, but we intend to expand in the near future and the server should be easy to scale in form of adding more RAM and HDD space - if its possible. I think a virtual server may be the best choice - hyper-v or virtuozzo? - considering cost vs specs - but i'm open to suggestions. The max budget is in the range of $1000-1200/year. You guys have any suggestions? Let me know if you need further info.

In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http://server:8085 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache http://server:90 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM http://server:8081 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http://apache.server or http://apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http://fdm.server or http://fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http://jdownloader.server or http://jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how? Even if it's possible only for Internet, I would like to know how to do it, if there's a way.

• Windows server 2008 rejecting packets from client

  We deployed a server application in .NET 4.0 that is going to run on Windows Server 2008 R2. Strangely, the clients cannot connect to the server given an external IP and the server port. I've ran wireshark diagnostics on the server computer and verified that the packets are arriving to the NIC without any issue so it seems Windows Server 2008 is the culprit here. I've tried to temporarily disable the firewall and add the server port into inbound/outbound rule but it still doesn't solve the issue. How can I solve this issue?

• Windows Storage Server 2008 hangs at logon

  We have a Dell PowerVault NX-3000 server running Windows Server 2008. Every now and then, when I try to login, the server seems to hang at the Welcome screen after I type in the password. However, all other services on the server are running fine - users are able to print off the print server and access their files. It just won't let me login. Any idea why this is happening? P.S.: I can't look at the server logs, because it won't let me login in the first place. Remote administration is also disabled on the server, so I can't use Remote Administration tools to look at the logs.

The link is provided by a 100-Mbps point-to-point line. I have always understood that you should not have more than one DHCP server on a network. However, we are planning to put a domain controller on each building, and each domain controller will be a DNS server and a DHCP server as well. The intention is that a machine booting up in building A gets its IP address from the DHCP server closer to it, in building A, while a machine booting up in building B gets an address from the DHCP server in building B. Since the two buildings will be linked and the network will be only one, will this work? How can I avoid that a machine booting up in building A gets an address from the DHCP server in building B (or vice versa)? Thanks.
