• Sybase SQLAnywhere jConnect routines?

  I have a database which is part of a closed system and the end-user of the system would like me to write some reports using the data contains in a Sybase SQL Anywhere Database. The system doesn't provide the reports that they are looking for, but access to the data is available by connecting to this ASA database. The vendor of the software would likely prefer I not update the database and I am basically read-only as I am just doing some reporting. All is good, seal is not broken, warranty still intact, etc,etc.. My main problem is that I am using jConnect in order to read from the database, and jConnect requires some "jConnect Routines" to be installed into the database. I've found that I can make this happen by just doing an "Alter Database Upgrade JConnect On", but I just don't fully understand what this does and if there is any risks associated with it. So, my question is does anyone know exactly what jConnect routines are and how are they used? Is there any risk adding these to a database? Should I be worried about this?

• How to Create Deterministic Guids

  In our application we are creating Xml files with an attribute that has a Guid value. This value needed to be consistent between file upgrades. So even if everything else in the file changes, the guid value for the attribute should remain the same. One obvious solution was to create a static dictionary with the filename and the Guids to be used for them. Then whenever we generate the file, we look up the dictionary for the filename and use the corresponding guid. But this is not feasible coz we might scale to 100's of files and didnt want to maintain big list of guids. So another approach was to make the Guid the same based on the path of the file. Since our file paths and application directory structure are unique, the Guid should be unique for that path. So each time we run an upgrade, the file gets the same guid based on its path. I found one cool way to generate such 'Deterministic Guids' (Thanks Elton Stoneman). It basically does this: private Guid GetDeterministicGuid(string input) { //use MD5 hash to get a 16-byte hash of the string: MD5CryptoServiceProvider provider = new MD5CryptoServiceProvider(); byte[] inputBytes = Encoding.Default.GetBytes(input); byte[] hashBytes = provider.ComputeHash(inputBytes); //generate a guid from the hash: Guid hashGuid = new Guid(hashBytes); return hashGuid; } So given a string, the Guid will always be the same. • How to make NAnt send an email using a real account

  First of all, I have already seen this post: nant mail issues but the only answer is not satisfactory (i.e.: doesn't work for me). I am using NAnt to get latest version of source, upgrade version of the libraries and application, build the application, build the setups... all the usual things, I bet. I would like NAnt to send an email to some people confirming the conclusion of the build process; I've already checked the official (pretty ugly, IMHO) documentation for the task, but the example, once copied and customized, doesn't work. This are the NAnt target and task I'm using: <target name="sendMail" > <mail from="[email protected]" tolist="[email protected];[email protected]" subject="Subject of email" mailhost="smtp.gmail.com" message="Your new release is ready!"> </mail> </target> The error message I get is: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. It looks like that the task was designed for use by an account whose provider doesn't need authentication; but what can I do if I must use an external smtp server which requires authentication (telling my boss I need an smtp server in house is not an option)? • Selectively intercepting methods using autofac and dynamicproxy2

  I'm currently doing a bit of experimenting using Autofac-1.4.5.676, autofac contrib and castle DynamicProxy2. The goal is to create a coarse-grained profiler that can intercept calls to specific methods of a particular interface. The problem: I have everything working perfectly apart from the selective part. I gather that I need to marry up my interceptor with an IProxyGenerationHook implementation, but I can't figure out how to do this. My code looks something like this: The interface that is to be intercepted & profiled (note that I only care about profiling the Update() method) public interface ISomeSystemToMonitor { void Update(); // this is the one I want to profile void SomeOtherMethodWeDontCareAboutProfiling(); } Now, when I register my systems with the container, I do the following: // Register interceptor gubbins builder.RegisterModule(new FlexibleInterceptionModule()); builder.Register<PerformanceInterceptor>(); // Register systems (just one in this example) builder.Register<AudioSystem>() .As<ISomeSystemToMonitor>) .InterceptedBy(typeof(PerformanceInterceptor)); All ISomeSystemToMonitor instances pulled out of the container are intercepted and profiled as desired, other than the fact that it will intercept all of its methods, not just the Update method. Now, how can I extend this to exclude all methods other than Update()? As I said, I don't understand how I'm meant to say "for the ProfileInterceptor, use this implementation of IProxyHookGenerator". All help appreciated, cheers! Also, please note that I can't upgrade to autofac2.x right now; I'm stuck with 1.

• Looking for a .Net ORM

  I'm looking for a .Net 3.5 ORM framework with a rather unusual set of requirements: I need to create and alter tables at runtime with schemas defined by my end-users. (Obviously, that wouldn't be strongly-typed; I'm looking for something like a DataTable there) I also want regular strongly-typed partial classes for rows in non-dynamic tables, with custom validation and other logic. (Like normal ORMs) I want to load the entire database (or some entire tables) once, and keep it in memory throughout the life of the (WinForms) GUI. (I have a shared SQL Server with a relatively slow connection) I also want regular LINQ support (like LINQ-to-SQL) for ASP.Net on the shared server (which has a fast connection to SQL Server) In addition to SQL Server, I also want to be able to use a single-file database that would support XCopy deployment (without installing SQL CE on the end-user's machine). (Probably Access or SQLite) Finally, it has to be free (unless it's OpenAccess) I'll probably have to write it myself, as I don't think there is an existing ORM that meets these requirements. However, I don't want to re-invent the wheel if there is one, hence this question. I'm using VS2010, but I don't know when my webhost (LFC) will upgrade to .Net 4.0

• iPhone app stopped building crash reports

  My app formerly created useful crash logs. I synced my iPhone in the past and found crash logs in library/logs/CrashReporter About a month ago, my app stopped creating crash reports. When I first discovered this problem, I assumed it was due to memory corruption (a possibility in my app). I just created a new project and added a crash to it. // Implement viewDidLoad to do additional setup after loading the view, // typically from a nib. - (void)viewDidLoad { NSMutableArray *array = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; [array removeObjectAtIndex:-1]; [super viewDidLoad]; } This app does not create a crash report either. Ideas I've started to explore: My phone is corrupted (tried restoring - somehow I brought it to the state from a few months ago) My XCode is corrupt (tried reinstalling, but current download demands Snow Leopard - and I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard online). This seems possible - I may have messed with device support around a month ago (similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1224867/does-iphone-os-3-0-1-ruin-your-development-phone ) The location for crash logs has somehow moved. Suggestions?

  Why the call to ABAddressBookGetPersonCount(ab); is giving the problem? I have around 2000 contacts in my address book. When my app gets started I'm trying to read the entire address book. This works perfectly on simulator but causing crash on IPhone.   Hi, I tried doing a mvn dependency:tree and I get a tree of dependencies. The output looks like below. I want to know what is the "-" symbol that is shown at times and the "+-" symbol for other dependencies (it doesnt seem to be the scope) My actual question is, My project depends on many modules which internally depends on many spring artifacts. There are a few version clashes. I want to upgrade all spring related libraries to say the latest one (2.6.x or above). What is the preferred way to do this? Should I declare all the deps spring-context, spring-support (and 10 other artifacts) in my pom.xml and point them to 2.6.x ? Is there any other better method ? • Mysql latin1 turkish data and delphi 2010 utf8

  Hello, I have tables collating latin1_general_ci and have turkish character values. And i can use this data on delphi 7+zeos with no problem. but i want to upgrade my delphi to 2010 version but zeos too slow as i saw. so i want to use odbc+ado or dbexpress solution. dbexpress solution works fine , display my data as entered and write as entered table without any change to column charset. but dbexpress has problems as i saw. for example when i select * from table which has column types as varchar,decimal,int,tinyint,text give av errors on xp systems. vista and 7 does not give any error and work fine(not fully tested). ado solution(dbgo) works fine but its not show my data as entered.its want everything be utf. but i don't want to convert my data to utf before test everything. how can i see my data as entered and write client side utf and store latin1(as zeos or dbexpress do). i was tried many other options. eg. mysql side collation and charset parameters. sorry for my bad english. i hope someone understand me. thanks.

  I want to upgrade my jaxws to 2.2 (jdk1.6 comes bundled with jaxws 2.1). My jdk is (I did not install public jre): java version "1.6.0_20" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode) In jaxws' own doc they explain how to do it: One way to fix this is to copy jaxws-api.jar and jaxb-api.jar into JRE endorsed directory, which is $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed (or $JDK_HOME/jre/lib/endorsed) But I am not sure this is having any effect in my installation. For starters I have only defined %JAVA_HOME%. And folder $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed is inexistant, so I created and copied the two jars. But if I do (wsgen is a tool from jaxws) wsgen -version I still get: JAX-WS RI 2.1.6 in JDK 6 I also tried creating folder JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\endorsed (notice that in the doc they say JDK_HOME, but as I only have JAVA_HOME I used this path). Still same wsgen output. My questions are: What is the difference between JAVA_HOME and JDK_HOME in the doc page? anything significant or just two ways to refer to JAVA_HOME ? Is 'wsgen -version' a valid way to check jaxws version that is used or this always calls the exe in the original jdk, but it does not mean endorsed jars will be used? Anyone knows very detailed steps to install jaxws2.2 in a jdk.16?

  Hi, Several of my pages use both JQuery and Protoype. Since I upgraded to version 1.3 of JQuery this appears to be causing problems, because both libraries define a function named '$'. JQuery provides a function noConflict() which relinquishes control of $ to other libraries that may be using it. So it seems like I need to go through all my pages that look like this: <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/prototype.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/jquery.js"></script> </head> and change them to look like this: <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/prototype.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/jquery.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery.noConflict(); var $j = jQuery; </script> </head> I should then be able to use '$' for Prototype and '$j' (or 'jQuery') for JQuery. I'm not entirely happy about duplicating these 2 lines of code in every relevant page, and expect that at some point somebody is likely to forget to add them to a new page. I'd prefer to be able to do the following Create a file jquery-noconflict.js which "includes" jquery.js and the 2 lines of code shown above Import jquery-noconflict.js (instead of jquery.js) in all my JSP/HTML pages However, I'm not sure if it's possible to include one JS file in another, in the manner I've described? Of course an alternate solution is simply to add the 2 lines of code above to jquery.js directly, but if I do that I'll need to remember to do it every time I upgrade JQuery. Thanks in advance, Don

• Windows with Plesk Panel installs ActiveState Python 2.5.0 - any thoughts?

  I expect to run Pylons on a Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6 on a Virtual Private Server (VPS). Most work with the VPS is done through the Plesk 8.6 panel. The Plesk panel has a lot of maintenance advantages for us. However, this Plesk configuration installs ActiveState Python 2.5.0. The Parallels Plesk documents for 8.6 and version 9 insist that only this configuration should be installed. I'm not eager to settle for the baseline 2.5.0. but don't see any safe upgrade path. How has ActiveState Python 2.5.0 been for other users? Can you replace the Parallels\Plesk\Additional\Python with another distribution? I don't want to break Plesk, please. Previously, I followed these instructions, Serving a Pylons app with IIS - Pylons Cookbook Using the default web site IP address, I had Python 2.6.3 installing the ISAPI-WSGI dll in IIS so that I successfully ran Pylons in a virutalenv through IIS using the IP address, no domain name. I would be so happy if I could run this successful configuration for my domains while I must use Plesk. Tips and solutions appreciated.

• Porting an IBXpress Interbase 6 app to the current Firebird platform, on Delphi 7?

  Just wondering if there are any gotchas to be wary of here. We have a legacy D7 app that we developed several years ago for a client, which uses IBXpress to talk to the open source Interbase 6 build. We're having a number of issues with that platform these days (very slow to connect/start-up on new hardware being the chief one) and the client has okayed spending some time/money moving the database over to Firebird. We really DON'T want to embark upon moving it to D2010 (or D2007 which would be my preference right now) as we figure that we might have to move the database layer from IBXpress to something else to best suit Firebird anyway. And at the end of the day, the client is only looking to lessen the database pain, not overhaul/upgrade/rewrite the app. Given the ancestry of Firebird, is it a fairly painless, well-understood path from IBXpress Interbase 6 to (whatever) with Firebird? We have quite a number of sprocs, triggers (and even datatypes) etc in the existing IB database already (and the client has a number of paying customers all using this platform) so we felt that going to Firebird was more likely to be a smoother move than moving to SQL Express (or another flavour of DB entirely). Note that we're not looking for 'embedded' DB advocacy - in many of our client's customers' installations, the software is used in a multi-user client-server way so keeping that kind of approach is important.

• Node.js running under IIS Express Keeps Crashing

  I recently resinstalled Windows 7 on my machine and went back to downloading and installing the tools to help me continue developing node.js windows azure web applications. I've run windows update but it says I've got all the latest updates etc. Can I tell the powershell cmdlet to use IIS 7 instead of IIS Express? I'm guessing its something to do with IIS Express on my machine. • Weird Issues with WPMU I Can't Figure Out

  I know I should post this on the WPMU forum, but no one writes me back and I'm just trying to find a larger audience hoping you have run into this issue as well. I have built a WPMU site for a client, and I am able to upload media into the Media Library and within a Post or Page perfectly. I thought my job was finished, yet the client can't upload any media at all. I'm located in Kentucky, they are located in New England (if that even matters). I had the client record their process of uploading as I thought they were simply not following my instructions for uploading, yet they are doing everything correctly. When uploading a file it goes through the process of allowing them to select a file and it says it uploads it, yet when it is finished uploading nothing is in the Media Library or in the Post.   Hi, I'm trying to upload an iPhone app binary to iTunesConnect and keep getting the following error message "The binary you upload was invalid. the file was not a valid zip file". I had an app upload ok recently but this app is having problems. So after a while I carefully went through the following steps trying to make sure everything was ok. Any help is appreciated. The steps: renamed the project (Project-Rename... enter name into Rename project to:) to release name making sure the name has no spaces. Cleaned project Make sure references in build setting reflect new app name Create new app ID matching project name in iPhone Provisioning Portal Destroyed old developer and distributer provisioning profiles in Provisioning Portal, in XCode and on iPhone. Create new development provisioning profile using new app name. Install development provisioning profile into XCode 8) Build (Release) for iPhone OS 3.1.3 (highest my phone will upgrade to, I'm assuming current released version) Builds, Installs and Runs on actual iPhone: To me this implys App and developer ID's are OK. Create a distributor provisioning profile using existing Distributer ID. Install distributer ID into XCode Clean Checked that "Code Signing Identity" and "Any iPhone OS Device" lines in Build settings are set to Distributor ID Build for release for OS 3.1.3 Check Build results to make sure code is signed with Distributor Profile Reveal .app file and compress (alt click Compress "appName.app") Upload to iTunes connect Gives "The binary you uploaded was invalid. • Producer/consumer system using database (MySql), is this feasible?

  Hi all. I need to use something to coordinate my system with several consumers/producers each running on different machines with different operating systems. I have been researching on using MySql to do this, but it seems ridiculously difficult. My requirements are simple: I want to be able to add or remove consumers/producers at any time and thus they should not depend on each other at all. Naturally a database would separate the two nicely. I have been looking at Q4M message queuing plugin for MySql but it seems complicated to use: I have to recompile it every time I upgrade MySql (can this really be true?) because when I try to install it on Ubuntu 9.10 with MySql 5.1.37 it says "Can't open shared library 'libqueue_engine.so' (errno: 0 API version for STORAGE ENGINE plugin is too different)". There is no precompiled version for MySql 5.1.37 apparently. Also what if I want to run MySql on my windows machine, then I can't rely on this plugin as it only seems to run on Linux and OSX?? I really need some input on how to construct my system best possible.

• Development environment for ASP.NET with EpiServer

  At our company we are going to develop more for the Windows platform than we have done up until now. As this scale of Windows development is new to us it would be nice with some feedback from experienced developers. Requirements we have: 5 developers from the beginning. 15 developers a year from now. All developers should be able to develop at the same time. Be able to develop solution for ASP.NET and EpiServer 5. Our idea: A shared server which developers use for development through Terminal Services. SQL Server Express. Start with some free express edition of Visual Studio, upgrade to a commercial version if we need the additional features. Use IIS and not the web server built into Visual Studio. Questions: Are we on the right track? In terms of license costs the above should be cheapest, right? What do you think about multiple developers doing development using a shared TS-server? Do you know of any company which has a similar development environment? Are we going to miss some features of the full Visual Studio version immediately? Is using Express version a bad choice? Is IIS the best choice? If use IIS the developers may use the same port for deployment. If we use the built in web server each one has to set their own port as we're sharing a machine. Comment answer: We are thinking about a shared server as it will most likely decrease the license costs. So it's purely a cost issue. We are using CVS for version control. Our situation is that we develop on Mac and Linux, that's why buying 1 server license + Visual Studio licenses seems to be a cost effective way of starting this type of development.

• Moving to .net 4 results in System.Transactions Critical: 0

  Hi I have fully working project in .net 3.5SP1, with EF 1 ORM. I tried to upgrade to .net 4. No issue while upgrading... Then i ran the project and got a NullExecptionError, with no stack trace... and no way to debug. • Python SQLite FTS3 alternatives?

  Are there any good alternatives to SQLite + FTS3 for python? I'm iterating over a series of text documents, and would like to categorize them according to some text queries. For example, I might want to know if a document mentions the words "rating" or "upgraded" within three words of "buy." The FTS3 syntax for this query is the following: (rating OR upgraded) NEAR/3 buy That's all well and good, but if I use FTS3, this operation seems rather expensive. The process goes something like this: # create an SQLite3 db in memory conn = sqlite3.connect(':memory:') c = conn.cursor() c.execute('CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE fts USING FTS3(content TEXT)') conn.commit() Then, for each document, do something like this: #insert the document text into the fts table, so I can run a query c.execute('insert into fts(content) values (?)', content) conn.commit() # execute my FTS query here, look at the results, etc # remove the document text from the fts table before working on the next document c.execute('delete from fts') conn.commit() This seems rather expensive to me. The other problem I have with SQLite FTS is that it doesn't appear to work with Python 2.5.4. The 'CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE' syntax is unrecognized. This means that I'd have to upgrade to Python 2.6, which means re-testing numerous existing scripts and programs to make sure they work under 2.6. Is there a better way? Perhaps a different library? Something faster? Thank you.

• Selenium and Firefox 9's "Will you help improve Mozilla Firefox" popup

  I'm trying to test a Java web app using Selenium 2.16.1. When Selenium opens Firefox, I see a band at the top of the page with message "Will you help improve Mozilla Firefox" For some reason this breaks selenium.click("id=submit"); selenium.waitForPageToLoad("60000"); which is trying to log in - it becomes a no-op, and the test fails because it's then expecting to have logged in. If I break on the click line and clear the 'will you help' band before continuing then the form submit succeeds. Is there a way to suppress this band from appearing? (I expect that would mean setting a property in Firefox's default profile - where do I find that?) Or is there a way to get Selenium to spot and dismiss this first? Thanks! I'm using Firefox 9.0.1. Solved - thanks Danny! Just in case it isn't clear from the answers and comments below: This was an issue with 2.16.1 and IMO the best solution is to upgrade to 2.17 or later.

  Whenever two concurrent HTTP requests go to my Rails app, the second always returns the following error: A copy of ApplicationController has been removed from the module tree but is still active! From there it gives an unhelpful stack trace to the effect of "we went through the standard server stuff, ran your first before_filter on ApplicationController (and I checked; it's just whichever filter runs first)", then offers the following: /home/matchu/rails/torch/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:414:in `load_missing_constant' /home/matchu/rails/torch/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:96:in `const_missing' which I'm assuming is a generic response and doesn't really say much. Google seems to tell me that people developing Rails Engines will encounter this, but I don't do that. All I've done is upgrade my Rails app from 2.2 (2.1?) to 2.3. What are some possible causes for this error, and how can I go about tracking down what's really going on? I know this question is vague, so would any other information be helpful? More importantly: I tried doing a test run in a "production" environment just now, and the error doesn't seem to persist. Does this only affect development, then, and need I not worry too much?

• WiX: Forcefully launch uninstall previous using CustomAction

  I'm writing a new major upgrade of our product. In my installer I start by finding configuration settings of the previous version, then I'd like to uninstall the previous version. I have found several guides telling me how one should make a MSI suitable for such upgrades. However, the previous was not an MSI. It was not according to best practices. It does, however, in registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{GUID} specify an UninstallString. Using a RegistrySearch I can easy find the command below, which I store in UNINSTALL_CMD. RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\10\01\Intel32\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{GUID}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly 4: I cannot get the hang of the CustomAction needed to perform the actual uninstall. <CustomAction Id="ca.UninstPrev" Property="UNINSTALL_CMD" ExeCommand="" /> The MSI logs says: Info 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action: ca.UninstallPrevious, location: RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\10\01\Intel32\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information{GUID}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly, command: Anyone seeing what I am doing wrong here? • WS-Security using the ASMX file in ASP.NET 3.5

  Basically I need to setup my ASMX file so that when I pull it up in a browser to display the WebMethod specification the Soap Header conforms to this format: <soap:Header> <wsse:Security> <wsse:UsernameToken wsu:Id='SecurityToken-securityToken'> <wsse:Username>Username</wsse:Username> <wsse:Password>Password</wsse:Password> <wsu:Created>Timestamp</wsu:Created> </wsse:UsernameToken> </wsse:Security> </soap:Header> Back-story: I'm integrating with a client application that is already built (and owned by another company). Basically this client application already has their soap messages all set up from its past integrations with other companies. So we've opted to just build a web service using an ASMX file that matches the WSDL that they're already setup to consume. Is it possible to get WS-Security working on an ASMX file or is ASMX too simplistic and I have to upgrade to WFC (which I really don't want to do)?
