• Which Subversion do I install for Windows?

  I was reading this article on Coding Horror: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2008/04/setting-up-subversion-on-windows.html I went to the downloads and am confused. I would have just downloaded the first entry but I am afraid it would break my server or something if I don't have apache. We use IIS only and I wouldn't want to break it somehow. I don't even need a web or webdav front end. Which one should I install on this page, please: http://subversion.tigris.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=91 thank you for any help. edit: thanks for information, but I am hoping to stay free with the "regular" subversion. I plan on using TortoiseSVN for the client.

• another file_exists with special chars problem

  I have some folders with special characters in their names. I run currently at a test-computer with Windows OS, but later I will use LINUX. My problem is that the folders with special chars in their names cannot be recognized somehow. ex: file_exists('../Bilar/27733691_1.jpg') // TRUE file_exists('../Båtar/27733691_1.jpg') // FALSE because of the special char in folder name... How should I solve this? I plan to run LINUX in the future when website is online... would that matter? Please explain thoroughly because I am a newb at this Thanks

• Will iPhone App with future "Availability Date" show up in "New Releases" on that day?

  I plan to submit my first iPhone game "The Twiggles" to the iPhone app store today. Like many people suggest, I want to set the "Availability Date" to a date way in the future and change it later. But there are two different opinions on what to do once the app is approved: A: Some people say, I have to quickly change the "Availability Date" to the date the app is approved by Apple right after I get the "app approved" mail. Otherwise it won't show up in the "New Releases" list. B: Some people say, this is not necessary (or maybe no longer necessary). I can set the "Availability Date" to some date in the future (for example, next weekend). The app will be released on that day and will show up in the "New Releases" list on that day. Who is right?

• C++ associative array with arbitrary types for values

  What is the best way to have an associative array with arbitrary value types for each key in C++? Currently my plan is to create a "value" class with member variables of the types I will be expecting. For example: class Value { int iValue; Value(int v) { iValue = v; } std::string sValue; Value(std::string v) { sValue = v; } SomeClass *cValue; Value(SomeClass *v) { cValue = c; } }; std::map<std::string, Value> table; A downside with this is you have to know the type when accessing the "Value". i.e.: table["something"] = Value(5); SomeClass *s = table["something"].cValue; // broken pointer Also the more types that are put in Value, the more bloated the array will be. Any better suggestions?

• Is it safe to unset PHP super-globals if this behavior is documented?

  I'm building a PHP framework, and in it I have a request object that parses the url as well as the $_GET, $_POST and $_FILE superglobals. I want to encourage safe web habits, so I'm protecting the data against SQL injection, etc. In order to ensure users of this framework are accessing the safe, clean data through the request object, I plan to use unset($_GET, $_POST, $_REQUEST); after parsing those variables. I will document this in the method comments, and explain in the framework documentation that this is happening. My question is: Would this be desirable behavior? What are the potential pitfalls that I have not foreseen?

• drawbacks of storing all ''things' in a central table

  Hi, I am not sure if there is a term to describe this, but I have observed that content management systems store all kinds of data in a single table with their bare minimum properties while the meta data is stored in another table in form of key value pairs. for eg. everything (blog posts, pages, images, events etc) is stored in one table and considered as a post. I understand that this allows for abstraction and easy extensibility we are considering designing our new project this way. It is not exactly a CMS but we plan to keep adding modules to it in stages. Lets say initially there will be only posts and images on which comments can be posted. Later on we might add videos which will also have the commenting feature. what are the drawbacks of this approach ? and will it work for a requirement like ours ? Thanks

My job and personal experience covers many project-specific Swing client frameworks as well as the Eclipse RCP, and every one of them had some original and clever concepts, but also drawbacks and rigid realizations. My plan is to incorporate the best of those concepts and features into a new framework whose core is very open and extendable. For my must-have-features list, I'm counting on your input and hope you can share some concept pearls & diamonds you've encountered in other frameworks, or features you always wanted to have or have in a better way.   If I have an enumeration of dictionaries IEnumerable<IDictionary<string, float>> enumeration can I perform a Linq query on it so that I can select by a value from each dictionary in the enumeration using the same key? I can do this in a loop: float f; foreach (var dictionary in enumeration) { if (dictionary.TryGetValue("some key", out f)) { Console.WriteLine(f); } } (The eventual plan is to compare the performance of the query verses the equivalent nested looping statements (the enumeration itself is formed from either another query or an equivalent set of loops).)

• Forking Multiple Apps Under Python Subprocess

  Hello all. I have been looking through Google and SO for something that could help me solve this but I have run into a block. I am a bit new to Python but I am looking for a way to run multiple apps that will continuously run in the background. For example, I need 4 apps to start up with a param -appnum set to a different value. I would like to use python to count up and then start up a new app that will continue to run. I assumed I would use subprocess but I feel a bit overwhelmed by the documentation. I also plan to have the app print out sequences of numbers and would like to redirect this to a file. I noticed some of the SO questions talked about this, but I am a little confused on what to do. -Mike

  i have hosting accout in go daddy its a delux plan so i can assign more than one url right now i got two of them they both registerd throgh go daddy in the same account. right now i would like to give some storage space to a freind that have a url ( also go ddady) in a different account . and i do not know how to do it . i think he needs to set up his name servers as my name servers so he did and than i should add his url in the domain maneger i did that also and even installed joomla on this particular folder that i assinged to his url nothing happenend . am i missing somthing ? plz help if you can :)

• Widget_Controller for different types of data (MVC)

  Hello, I have a few widgets I need to show on a site - they are all relating to different types of data (e.g user, house). Each type of data and its relations is represented in specific models, but as far as a controller or helper is concerned, is it an ok plan to have a generic Widget controller/helper which generates the necessary widgets, even though each widget is dealing with distinct data? I don't really want to generate these widgets within the User and House controllers, as these controllers are dealing with different types of functionality. I'd imagine that the Widget_Controller could just contain static methods for generating these widgets, e.g: Widget_Controller::user_panel(); Does that make sense? Cheers!

• Git: Make one branch exactly like another

  I am relatively new to Git, and I'm still not very comfortable with it. Right now, I'm looking for the command/options/magic that can make the current branch look like another branch; that is, to merge them, but when a conflict arises, to always choose the difference in the branch that is being merged into the current one. My situation is thus; I have an stable(ish) application on the "master" branch. I also have another branch, called "feature". I basically want to make changes/additions/deletions to feature until I like the new feature I'm working on. Once I feel it is ready, I want to make the master branch look identical to the feature branch. I know this probably isn't a best practice, but as I said, I'm new to Git. I plan on learning how to do more complicated things in the future, but for now, this is all I need. Thanks, SO!

I created so many blocks, pages with View. so it makes my site to so much depend on database. should not I do that? can it be the reason of my site's no working now. appreciate helps!!!!

  I want to pass a function that takes a parameter to the ThreadStart Constructor in C#. But, it seems that this is not possible, as I get a syntax error it I try to do something like this Thread t1 = new Thread(new Thread Start(func1(obj1)); where obj1 is an object of type List<string> (say). If I want a thread to execute this function that takes in an object as a parameter, and I plan to create 2 such threads simultaneously with different parameter values what is the best method to achieve this?

  Hi, We're developing a layered web application. The specs: 3 layers, data layer, business layer, ui layer. Programmed in C# Data Layer uses the entity framework Currently we plan on having the data layer return IEnumerable<T> to the business layer via linq 2 entities, and the business layer will return data to the ui layer. Since the ui layer has no knowledge of the existance of the data layer, how would it handle a result of IEnumerable passed to it from the BLL, where T is defined in the data layer? Are there any GOOD example out there on how to do this. Please note that I'm extremely new to factories / interfaces / abstraction to loosely couple layers. I saw the question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/917457/passing-data-in-an-ntier-application and it was recommended to have the entity layer shared amongst all layers... however I do not want the other layers to be able to query the database.

• PHP exec() hangs, Error 500

  So, my plan is to make small thumbnails of URL's with PHP and IECapt. IECapt works well, a nice command line tool, gets the full sized image of specified URL in 1 to 4 seconds. But my problem is to execute it trough PHP. This is the code I've trying to get working: exec('IECapt.exe ' . escapeshellarg($URL) . ' ' . escapeshellarg($Filename)) $URL is of course the URL, and $filename is a simplified version of the URL. Sometimes I get the IECapt to snap the image(trough PHP), but it takes awfully long (30-60s), and in the end I always get a 500-error, with no error messages to tell me what's wrong. Both variables are fine, they work manually with commandline: IECapt http://google.com Google.png My server set-up is IIS7 and PHP5.2.9, if relevant. (Windows Vista, all on my personal computer, so full access.) Any ideas?

• When does code bloat start having a noticeable effect on performance?

  I am looking to make a hefty shift towards templates in one of my OpenGL projects, mainly for fun and the learning experience. I plan on watching the size of the executable carefully as I do this, to see just how much of the notorious bloat happens. Currently, the size of my Release build is around 580 KB when I favor speed and 440 KB when I favor size. Yes, it's a tiny project, and in fact even if my executable bloats 10 x its size, it's still going to be 5 MB or so, which hardly seems large by today's standards... or is it? This brings me to my question. Is speed proportional to size, or are there leaps and plateaus at certain thresholds, thresholds which I should be aiming to stay below? (And if so, what are the thresholds specifically?)

  My situation: We have a mobile version of our website, and want to start redirecting mobile users to it. The plan is to do this in Apache httpd.conf or .htaccess, using something like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} (iPhone|Blackberry|...) RewriteRule (.*) mobile/$1 However we want there to be a way for users to override our default action of redirecting them. One way we thought to do it was to show a link on the mobile site directing back to the regular site, and store a cookie when they use that link. Could the Apache configuration file check a cookie before redirecting? Is there a better way?

  I am trying to write a function [offset,coffset]=findLowNhbr(map) that for each pixel in a map finds the eight neighbors to the pixel, and returns two matrices with both the row and column offsets to the lowest neighbor (uses the numbers -1, 0 and 1). Border pixels are given 0 offsets for both the row and column, since they do not have neighbors. Here is what I think the general plan for this function should be: For each point, find the eight nearest neighbors. If the neighbor is lower than the point, return -1 If the neighbor is at the same elevation as the point, return 0 If the neighbor is higher than the point, return +1 Store these offsets in two matrices. I am at a complete loss as to where to start, so any advice or questions are welcome!

  Hi all, I'm trying to plan a series of websites that all share many of the resources such as css/jscript/images/content etc. For this reason I wanted to run all of the websites under the same application and IIS profile, but depending on the URL being used change the masterpage and theme/skin. The ASP.NET membership database seems as if it was designed with this goal in mind because it allows you to setup multiple applications, however I believe the purpose for which this was built was to allow applications to be run under virtual directories/fodlers, not on seperate urls. Each GPS device daily data quantity is: 24 * 60 * 2 = 2,880 10 000 10,000 GPS devices daily data quantity is: 10000 * 2880 = 28,800,000 Each GPS data approximately 160Byte, the amount of data per day is: 28,800,000 * 160 = 4.29GB We need hold at least 3 months of GPS data in the database, My question is: 1, whether SQL Server 2005 can support such a large amount of data store? 2, How to plan data table? (all GPS data storage in one table? Daily table? Each GPS device with a GPS data table?)   Hi, I am working for a project on disaster management sponsered by World Bank, under this project i have assigned work on CMS. and my senior has asked me to make a ASP.NET webpage where those logged with administrator privilege will be able to edit the page. like:- <div id="mydiv"><pre>+++++++MY CONTENT+++++++++++++++++++</pre></div> now if if the admin clicks on mydiv he should be able to edit the pre contents. for this i got many options such as WYSIWYG editors (but they work on textboxs only and further more they cant save the data back to server replacing the previous content) then I came to know about Webparts , but its editing capabilities was so low that my plan for implementing a WYSIWYG editor went in vain. so I m seeking help from u all is their any way to achieve the motive, it would be better if u can suggest something like incorporating WYSIWYG into webpartmanager editor...
