• Stop chkdsk when Windows 7 on one drive and Windows 8 on another

  I installed Windows 8 (retail) on a new drive with my Windows 7 drive unplugged. So each Windows has no idea about the other one and I use the BIOS boot options to select which drive hence OS to boot into. Now whenever I boot into Windows 8 then boot into Windows 7, Windows 7 runs chkdisk presumably because Windows 8 messed with it. Is there anyway to stop this? (In hindsight I should have installed Windows 8 with Windows 7 drive plugged in so I could use the Windows dual boot options).

  Possible Duplicate: Ubuntu OpenLDAP and Mac OS X Roaming Profiles I've installed slapd on Ubuntu 12 after a long long day of trial and error. I've added the apple.ldif schema, and the samba.ldif schema, plus a test user. Last week, I had installed slapd on Ubuntu 11, and was able to authenticate against it from OS X Lion after finding the following blog post: Fixing OpenLDAP Authentication on OS X Lion This suggests running the following commands to fix the authentication problem /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "add ':module options:ldap:Denied SASL Methods:' string CRAM-MD5" /Library/Preferences/OpenDirectory/Configurations/LDAPv3/yourldapserver.plist /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "add ':module options:ldap:Denied SASL Methods:' string NTLM" /Library/Preferences/OpenDirectory/Configurations/LDAPv3/yourldapserver.plist /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "add ':module options:ldap:Denied SASL Methods:' string GSSAPI" /Library/Preferences/OpenDirectory/Configurations/LDAPv3/yourldapserver.plist However, I ran these commands on OS X Mountain Lion, and I am still unable to authenticate. • Understanding Windows 8 Recovery options

  Background: I am preparing a PC that I am sending to a relative abroad, who has little or no internet access, and next to no sensible options for getting IT support should anything go wrong. As such I am trying to provide a full set of recovery options such that they are able to reinstall the OS with minimum fuss or assistance if required. The PC is a brand new Acer laptop that came with Windows 7 pre-installed (and an associated recovery partition) and a free upgrade to Windows 8. I have installed Windows 8 from scratch performing a format and clean install from media I burned from the official download. The existing Windows 7 recovery partition is still there, and I can still boot from it. I have created recovery DVDs of that in case it is ever lost. Here are my recovery options so far. I can perform a factory reset of Win 7 via the recovery partition I can perform a factory reset of Win 7 via burned recovery DVDs I can re-install Windows 8 cleanly from a DVD All of these are useful, but not what I want, because the first 2 methods use Win 7, and still fill the machine with crapware, and the latter doesn't provide for any post-install customisation and software installation. So, I am looking to see what other options are available to perform a Windows 8 recovery that will be more than a simple install. I am aware that Win8 comes with some useful refresh tools: Refresh your PC - Re-install Win 8 over the top of your existing installation, recovering from any Windows corruption etc. I can run this from my current install, although it says some files are missing that will be provided by me install or recovery media, which seems to be code for stick your install DVD in, and it starts after I do that - unfortunately for this particular laptop you need to specify a particular WIFI driver or the install bombs out part way through with IRQL errors, and this refresh method skips the part where you can load a driver, so it's no use to me. I think I can fix this by creating a custom recovery image using the recimg.exe command but it takes hours to complete so I haven't tried it yet. Reset your PC - Perform a full install and lose all your files. Again it needs my Install media inserting before it will do anything, but then it provides an error (will include later when I recreate it...) Now, these recovery options look useful (in principal, although both are fail for me) but they rely on having a working system to access the tools, which leads me to the last option, of making a Recovery USB drive. I have made a recovery drive, and it should perform loads of useful things, including copying my WIN7 recovery partition to the drive, providing the above refresh and reset options, providing other troubleshooting options and also the ability to restore from a custom image, only none of them seem to work for me. Creating the Recovery Drive - the option to include my recovery partition is greyed out. The partition exists and works fine, why will it not copy it? Refresh - I imagine this would have the same issues as I described before, but this is moot because when I try it says that the "drive where Windows is installed is locked, please unlock the drive and try again" with no info on what that means and how to do it. Restore - Again, probably pointless as I can just use the DVD, but it also errors: "unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing" System Restore - should let me roll back a bad driver etc as per normal in Windows, only it simply says "To use system restore you must specify which windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and select system restore" ?!?! System Image Recovery - this seems to be offering to restore from a Windows system image, but this is deprecated in Windows 8, although you can still make one if you use the Windows 7 Backup tools, however the resultant file is too large to put on the USB stick as it's FAT formatted, and would be a massive stack of DVDs anyway. So useless. It would be nice it it would work with the custom recovery image you can use with the refresh command, but there seems no option to do this. Automatic Repair - some diagnostics, which seem useless as it happily tells me it can't fix my problem, even though I have none. Command Prompt - yay, this works! What on earth do I want to use it for... Had any of the above worked, it might be useful, but as any form of install still requires you to have the DVD, and any form of custom recovery image also requires you to have either a massive stack of DVDs or an NTFS formatted backup device in addition to the recovery drive, it sort of ruins the point. It doesn't seem rocket science. I want to create a bootable USB drive that I can refresh Windows over an existing install with, perform a clean reinstall to a bare system, or recovery a customised image with existing apps installed. If anyone can point me in a direction that allows me to make a single recovery drive do these all these things, I would appreciate it. I have a 32Gb USB3 thumb drive that I bought for this very purpose, but it's seems to be fighting to let me do anything useful. At this rate I will be making a DriveImageXML recovery stick and dumping the OS with that, which I know works, but isn't so elegant as using the proper tools..

• Ubuntu Studio Audio Issue with Alsa - No sound

  Spec: OS: Ubuntu Studio 13.10 64bit CPU: AMD FX 4100 Quad Core Memory: 6GB DDR3 Video: Radeon HD 4250 (embedded on the mobo) Sound: Delta 66 PCI Issue: I just installed Ubuntu Studio and found out that the streaming audio on a few common website such as Youtube had no sound, and also my CD/DVDs via a player. Thus, in the terminal, I entered: sudo alsa force-reload It actually worked but the sound/audio output was MONO and NOT Stereo (the sources are set to stereo stereo), and it seemed I was not able to locate any settings that can switch the output sound to stereo at all. I went through many forums and eventually "autoremove" pulseaudio since many said I would not be able to utilize both pulseaudio and alsa in this case. Now, I have no audio whatsoever. Does this version of Ubuntu only offer mono sound/audio no matter what I do? Then, I may just need to ditch the whole thing and go back to Windows, which I don't want to since Ubuntu Studio offers many great apps, soundfonts etc.. I have also installed restricted extra, but even after rebooting, it did not resolve the issue. In the terminal mode, I pulled "alsamixer" and unmuted almost everything. But still no sound after a reboot. Just an FYI, I have no saved data under this version of Ubuntu Studio yet, so please feel free to let me know whether I need to install Studio 12.10 instead or mess with some installing/uninstalling apps/plug-ins, etc... If it breaks at some point, all I need to do is to re-install it, which I do not mind at all. Or, if you can provide me a step by step instruction to get this work, I do not mind clean install the Studio 13.10 then wait for your instruction AT ALL!

• HFS for Windows by Paragon BSOD

  Installed HFS for Windows 7 yesterday. Did a reboot. Copied some files from my internal drive to external hfs drive. Did another reboot and rebooted to Mac. Mac worked fine. Then yesterday the battery went dead on my mac and the computer switched off. This morning tried to boot into windows but got a BSOD as soon as I moved my mouse in the login screen. BSOD refeers to an error with service HFSPLUS.SYS Now when I try to boot into mac (pressing alt while restarding) the mac drive isn's shown and I can only boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode. Cannot uninstall HFS for Windows the uninstaller in control panel says: "THE WINDOWS INSTALLER SERVICE COULD NOT BE ACCESSED. THIS CAN OCCUR WHEN WINDOWS INSTALLER IS NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED". SETUP: Intel Core 2 Duo, P8600 @ 2.40GHZ, 4GB RAM, WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE 32 BIT

• After installing Meld on 32-bit Karmic on 64-bit machine: "Meld requires pygtk 2.8.0 or higher."

  I got this error after installing Meld on a new Karmic installation: ~$ meld No module named pygtk Meld requires pygtk 2.8.0 or higher. I installed the latest version of python-gtk with aptitude but I'm not sure what version is actually installed. My python version is 2.6. This is weird because I have another machine that runs Karmic and Meld without a problem. The only difference between the two machines is the one with the error is a 64-bit machine running a 32-bit installation of Karmic. Could that be the problem?

  Question: What is the way to determine, ahead of time and without doing a full install of 64-bit Debian Testing NETINST, when Debian Testing has 32-bit libraries available and fully working and installable so that the following command works without broken package errors?: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk The errors that occur when 32-bit libraries are not available, still in some broken state, or whatever is broken are detailed below. I already have concluded that "Just install Stable" is my stop-gap measure for now, but I would like to know the answer to the above question so as to avoid a lengthy installation process only to run into these problems at the very end. Details: I downloaded the 64-bit Debian Testing netinst a couple of days ago. This was "Jessie" built 20131014-06:07 via http://tinyurl.com/lejpa. This is weekly testing build. Yes, I know I should expect problems, and I did. I managed to get it completely installed and was able to invoke into GNOME, but not get past the 32-bit library problem. The problems starts when I attempt to install the 32-bit libraries via: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk that returns: root@breath:~# apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed.   I'm having a great problem, I've installed Linux mint debian edition (LMDE), and following this tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/161 I did installed the network driver. The available connections appears to me, but when i try to connect to my connection at first time, I got this message: "(4) Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." And the following tries, I got this another message: "(32) Insufficient privileges." I'm accepting ideas. Thanks.

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 box and I want to make it a RDS server and connect with thin clients. I don't want to do VDI with hyper-v, as this box is already virtualized. RDS is installed and I've installed an RDS CAL. I've browsed the Technet articles, but navigating technet is worthless. Can anyone point me to a concise get-me-started guide to terminal services/remote desktop services? If I can just get aimed in the right direction I can probably figure it out myself. Thanks.

• Error message during installation of Windows XP Professional

  During installation of Windows XP Professional the installer had an error which points to a bad CD, so I got another one and tried it, but the same thing happened. What can I do? It says: One of the components Windows needs to continue could not be installed.. The component is called: sys.dll D:/i386/asms/1000/msft/windows/gdiplus/gdiplus.man. I tried running chkdsk /f to fix the errors on the disk. I've searched the internet all day, and I don't know what else to do. I get this error message: SYS.DLL Syntax error in manifest or policy file D:/i386/asms/1000/msft/windows/gdiplus/gdiplus.man on line 4 Error Installation failed d:/I386/asms Error message Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) Fatal error One of the components Windows needs to continue could not be installed. • CLI way of uninstalling a Windows update?

  Basically, what can be achieved by going to Control Panel Uninstall a Program View Installed Updates Right Click Uninstall, but through the command line? Looking for a way that works across the Windows platform but if (and according to my reading, most likely) it's version dependent so be it. Maybe something like: C:\command /uninstall "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2705219)" Looks like using the KB would be great but wusa.exe works for the above example update but not for say "Security Update for Silverlight (KBXXXXXXXX)". Not much consistency. I'm really surprised there isn't much documentation on this. How does an app like WUInstall do it? Follow up question is how is that list of "View Installed Updates" populated? I've searched the registry like crazy hoping for an "UninstallString" or equivalent but only found references to the regular Add/Remove Programs list. Thought I would reference a StackOverflow question for another perspective.

I installed on a Vista x64 machine Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (with integrated SQL from the installation package) and when I try to add an MDF file to a project or to the App_Data when working with web, I get the following message: Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URl: http:go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=49251. Just to make sure: SQL 2005 express is installed and I connect to it via SSMS. Update: I am 90% sure that this is a Microsoft bug with x64 machines.

• Recovering drivers from previous installation?

  Yesterday I bought a new computer and I've been setting it up since this morning. The hard drive came with windows 7 home premium (x64) installed, but I decided to instead install windows 7 ultimate (x64) - this is what I'm currently using. Unfortunately, there were some drivers that were installed that I need in this installation. I only notice because the computer doesn't have the ethernet drivers, so I'm only able to connect to the internet via wireless. There are other drivers missing as well, but I'm not yet seeing the effects. I still have the Windows.old folder with the previous installation, which has the drivers. Is there any way to copy the necessary ones over? I tried the options for updating driver software through device manager with the path set to System32\drivers of the old installation, but it didn't find anything.

  Hello all, I am trying to connect to a SVN server in order to import my project into it with svn+ssh authentication method. I am using the NetBeans IDE (6.8) with subversion plugin installed on Windows XP SP2. I have plink installed with its path set in the Windows PATH env variable. When I use the similar looking repository URL (XXXX and YYYY replaced with sensible things) svn+ssh://XXXX@YYYY/home/dce/svn/trunk along with this external tunnel command plink -l <myUserName> -i C:\\privateKey.ppk I keep getting this error: org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException: Network connection closed unexpectedly I searched about it on the Internet and tried many things but didn't work out. Please help if anybody has some idea what may be going wrong. Thanks a lot in advance.

• Nano suddenly putting in weird characters when I type

  I am using a shell and editing a file in nano (similar to pico). A short while ago, it started doing this thing where if I type: $query = "select" * from topics where id='' "; and then I hit Backspace and try to stick the letter 'a' into the id='' part, it changes it to: $query = "select * from koala_topics where id='a='' "; and the cursor jumps around to a few spaces before. Also if I type print At the start of a new line, and then I think "Oh I should have added a tab" and I go back and try to add a tab, it adds a tab AND 2 spaces, and if I put the cursor through the word print, it turns into printnt. Some other weird things have happened too. I uninstalled nano using yum (which is how I installed it), and then re-installed it, thinking that would get me clean preferences (in case that was the problem) but it doesn't fix it.

• 2 ATI Radeon HD 5870 (crossfire): Intermittent loud fan and non-functioning secondary card

  Installed 2 5870s. Left off the left side panel of my case(cooler master haf x), started my computer, installed the drivers and set up the crossfire... yada yada yada... everything worked fine. Then turned off computer, put left side panel back on, turned on computer, and heard a very loud buzzing (asssuming it was a gpu fan). Checked status of cards (in Windows 7) and the secondary card did not appear. Turned off the computer, took off left side panel, jiggled power connectors into secondary card, then turned the computer back on, and it worked again. Put the panel on, turned on computer, worked. Sometime later, turned on computer, and there's that loud fan sound again. What gives?

• Blurry Digital TV Signal in Media Center

  I recently reformatted my box and I reinstalled XP Media Center 2005. My TV signal is perfect if I plug it directly into the tv; and at any rate even shows I recorded previous to the reformat are blury. I have installed all updates (including Media Player 11) and I have installed a codec pack for different file types. I have no clue why it wouldn't display right. When I play the previously recorded shows in VLC they come out perfectly clear... Any ideas?

  I am using IIS7 on Windows Server 2008r2. I have recently installed php and IIS. I am trying to browse to the index.php but it returns a blank page. It loads the favicon and the header of my page. When I load an info.php file it is not blank. If I disable Anonymus Authentication it the same index.php returns IIS 7.5 Detailed Error - 401.2 - Unauthorized. What is strange is I installed this exact code onto another fresh IIS install I just did and it loads fine. Permissions for the directory are the same for both.

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to. • Install Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790

  Does anybody have experience installing Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790? When I connect to the machine with the Hyper-V Manager Administrator snap-in, and try to create and run a virtual machine, I get the error "The Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running". I've disabled the Execute Disable functionality in the BIOS as was requried for other Dell models, but no matter what combination of security and virtualization settings I use on the machine, I can't get this working. EDIT: I've installed Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790, and I'm trying to install and setup a guest VM on the Hypervisor EDIT 2: The Hyper-V role is installed and configured, without any errors in the event log. Hardware-assisted virtualization is also enabled.

• Monitor-Specific Color Profile Results In Yellow Grayscale Images

  I recently purchased a new Acer S201hl monitor. Many lay reviews compliment its color accuracy with people noting only a bit of a blueish tinge. After a little time, Windows found, and I installed, the Acer drivers via Microsoft Update. During the installation process, the software installed an ICC profile for the monitor from Acer. I recently noticed that when I view photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the colors are wrong. For example, grayscale document scans appear with yellow backgrounds instead of white backgrounds. This happens with both my external monitors and my ThinkPad's built-in screen. When I removed the monitor-specific profile from the list of profiles associated with a monitor (for example, removing the Acer profile from the Acer monitor), the problem went away for that screen. I checked with Microsoft KB939395 and though it says "an incorrect color profile [...] is used for the monitor," the profile associated with my ThinkPad's screen seemed to be correct, based on its name.

• Installing Windows 7 destroyed my dual boot setup

  I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate Windows XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" Windows XP with Office etc. (unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice). Normally I would be presented with two Windows XPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal" installation on disk 1 (C:). Selecting the first in boot order would give me D:\ (disk 2) with the barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added Windows XP disk D:. The options now show up, but selecting Windows XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started.
