  • Career Choice in JEE, are EJBs standard?

    I have chosen to go the JEE route for a career path but I have been having a hard time determining which core technologies that I need to be most familiar with. I'm at the point I can write web apps without a problem with JSP's and regular servlets using JDBC or some basic Hibernate stuff (I know, HTML, CSS and have used MVC extensively on a number of different platforms). What I'm trying to find out is if there is some standard as far as J2EE technologies go. When I look at most of the Job listings, occasionally you will see someone mention Struts or Spring but rarely do I see any mention of EJB's. So my question is really, are EJB's basically required by most JEE employers? Or are most of them working with POJO's? Is it a mix? I have a hard time figuring out if I should put the majority of my time into Struts, Spring/Hibernate, EJB's, etc. And if I do need to master EJB's what version should I learn? 2.1 or 3.0. 3.0 has some obviously better features but I figure a lot of companies probably chose to write their apps in 2.1 just because it was the standard of the time and now migrating would be a big deal. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

  • JTA or LOCAL transactions in JPA2+Hibernate 3.6.0?

    We are in the process of re-thinking our tech stack and below are our choices (We can't live without Spring and Hibernate due to the complexity etc of the app). We are also moving from J2EE 1.4 to JEE 5. Tech stack JEE 5 JPA 2.0 (I know JEE 5 only supports JPA 1.0 but we want to use Hibernate as the JPA provider) Hibernate 3.6.0 (We already have lots of hbm files with custom types etc. so we doesn't want to migrate them at this time to JPA. This means we want both jpa/hbm mappings work together and hence the Hibernate as the JPA provider instead of using the default that comes with App Server) Now the problems is that I want to stick with local transactions but other team members want to use JTA. I have been working with J2EE for last 9 years and I've heard time and again people suggesting to stick with local transactions if I doesn't need two phase commits. This is not only for performance reasons but debugging/troubleshooting a local transaction is lot easier than a distributed transaction. My suggestion is to use spring declarative transaction management + local transactions (HibernateTransactionManager) I want to make sure if I am being paranoid or I have a valid point. I'd like to hear what the rest of the JEE world thinks. Thank you.

  • How to setup Eclipselink with JPA?

And indeed: there is no Entity class in the javax.persistence package from Eclipselink. How do I have to setup Eclipselink with Maven?

But it throws an "IllegalArgumentException - container should be canvas" like that. How to solve the issue?

Within the Standalone Application a web browser needs to be opened, going to a page within the Web Application. This page is for authorized users only. Could anyone tell me if there is an easy way to automatically login within the Web Application via the Standalone Application? Besides using cookies or providing a token in the url. Thank you.

However, when I right click on the project node and select Test RESTful Web Service, the browser pop up, and supposedly my project would be listed on the left, and supposedly I would be able to select it, and test against various function that listed on the right. However, I dont see any of that. Any idea why?

    Is there a way to speed up the population of a page with GWT's UI elements which are generated from data loaded from the datastore? Can I avoid making the unnecessary RPC call when the page is loaded? More details about the problem I am experiencing: There is a page on which I generate a table with names and buttons for a list of entities loaded from the datastore. There is an EntryPoint for the page and in its onModuleLoad() I do something like this: final FlexTable table = new FlexTable(); rpcAsyncService.getAllCandidates(new AsyncCallback<List<Candidate>>() { public void onSuccess(List<Candidate> candidates) { int row = 0; for (Candidate person : candidates) { table.setText(row, 0, person.getName()); table.setWidget(row, 1, new ToggleButton("Yes")); table.setWidget(row, 2, new ToggleButton("No")); row++; } } ... }); This works, but takes more than 30 seconds to load the page with buttons for 300 candidates. The problem I am having right now is that, if I am on A, constructor of A will load, but it will also load constructor of bean B. This make my page load twice as slow. What would be the best way to solve this problem?
