• Unable to Upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10

  Following is what I get as error Error during update A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Restoring original system state I am using command line "do-release-upgrade" I have changed my dns to google public dns and verified that using nslookup and host -v could not find bg.archive.ubuntu.com in any of the source list files. not only in that in another tab I have ping google running just to verify that network is not down. Network has no issues.

• Absorbtion 2d image effect

  I want to create a specyfic 2d image effect. It consists in modifying a sprite so it looks like it is being zoomed to a point or "absorbed" by that point. I'm not really sure what is the technical name of this effect so I cannot explain it correctly.   Hi Guys, few days back I needed to install few DLL  assemblies to GAC, since I hardly knew about this topic, so googled on the internet and here is what I learned; There is a utility named ‘gacutil.exe’ which is delivered with Visual studio and .NET framework ( search in your PC for gacutil.exe) or you can also download  from internet. Before installing the DLL to GAC , ensure that the DLL you want to install has a strong name. To assign a strong name follow these steps::   1) Open the visual studio and open your C# project 2) Right click on the project/Solution and click on properties. 3) Click on the ‘Signing’ tab 4) Select the check box Sign the assembly and select a strong key file . 5) You can also create a new key file by selecting new, click on new to create a key file, provide the name of the file and password 6) Now build your solution, the dll file generated has a strong name.

  This question is not focussed on video games but games in general. I went to a boardgame trade fair yesterday and asked myself if there is a way to calculate the fairness of a game. Sure, some of them require a good portion of luck, but it might be possible to calculate if some character is overpowered. Especially in role-playing games and trading card games. How, for example, can the creators of "Magic: The Gathering" make sure that there isn't the "one card that beats them all", given the impressive number of available cards?

• How do engines avoid "Phase Lock" (multiple objects in same location) in a Physics Engine?

  Let me explain Phase Lock first: When two objects of non zero mass occupy the same space but have zero energy (no velocity). Do they bump forever with zero velocity resolution vectors or do they just stay locked together until an outside force interacts? In my home brewed engine, I realized that if I loaded a character into a tree and moved them, they would signal a collision and hop back to their original spot. I suppose I could fix this by implementing impulses in the event of a collision instead of just jumping back to the last spot I was in (my implementation kind of sucks). But while I make my engine more robust, I'm just curious on how most other physics engines handle this case. Do objects that start in the same spot with no movement speed just shoot out from each other in a random direction? Or do they sit there until something happens? Which option is generally the best approach?

• Allow sudo on specific file from active directory group

  I have an Ubuntu Server 12.04 box that has active directory integration running on it. I want to allow a certain active directory group access to execute a script as sudo. I want to do something like this: %programmers ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/createSambaShare.php When I log in with my active directory user and issue groups I do not see the group programmers, but I am a part of the programmers group within active directory. I've set up the group under the Unix attributes tab and given it an id of 1000 and added my user to it. My first thought was that I needed to add the group to the Ubuntu box. When I tried to do that, it told me that the programmers group already existed. What am I missing here?

• Setting primary internet connection and network on notebook

  I have installed Ubuntu on a notebook that I have configured to connect to the internet using an Iburst USB modem. This works 100% after a bit of configuring. I now have a desktop pc that I have installed ubuntu on, and would like to connect the two with a router. I bought a router with wifi, and would like to connect my notebook to the other computer using wifi, while still keeping the internet working with the usb modem. The problem is that as soon as the wifi connect, the internet connection dies. Is there a way to force ubuntu to get internet access through the usb modem, but use wifi to connect to the network? I am pretty new to ubuntu so any help would be appreciated. I also have a samsung galaxy tab that I would like to connect to the internet through usb modem via the wifi, so is there also a way to share that internet connection with the other computers on the network?   Should I be using WAI-ARIA in my website builds? Will it have any benefit? Is anyone adding 'role' to their code at the moment? The tab, link, checkbox and slider roles, plus many more, aren't available yet for HTML5. From looking at the list of what is available (see below), and what will be coming in the future, it looks like we might be applying roles to a huge amount of tags on our pages. Its not an issue especially if it brings benefit to users using readers etc Also, a side question, will search engines give any benefits to sites using WAI-ARIA? • How likely are IE9 jumplists to be useful?

  Having installed the Internet Explorer 9 release, I've experimented with the jumplists feature available in Windows 7 - drag a site tab down to the taskbar to create a jumplist. Works for Facebook and Twitter, anyway. I have my suspicions about the utility of this feature - it's a neat and possibly useful feature, yet is limited to the combination of IE9 and Windows 7, plus sites implementing the appropriate code. Given the relatively small audience at this point, is there any value in adding code to support this feature? And would it likely be more useful for a web application (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) than a typical website?

  I am used to use the numeric keypad for navigation (e.g. : [KP7] - Start, [KP1] - End, [KP4] - Left, etc... ). I am also used to use it for selection (e.g. : Shift+[KP7] - Select from cursor position to beginning of line, Shift+[KP1] - Select from cursor position to end of line, etc...) With the keyboard configuration installed with Ubuntu, though, Shift+[KP7] prints the character "7", Shift+[KP1] prints "1", etc... How can I change this so that Shift+[KP-key] is not mapped to [key], but to Shift+[KP-key] ?

• How to use American English spelling dictionary in Firefox?

  My Firefox spellchecker was complaining this morning that I spelled 'neighbor' in the American English style, not the British English style ('neighbour'). Same is true for color (colour), analyze (analyse), etc. I've checked in the edit-preferences-content-language tab, and en-us is selected. I also found this link here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1013043 Suggesting that there's some kind of system panel I can use to ensure that I've got the right language, but I can't see where that is (I guess that's for an older Ubuntu that let people get to system settings). So either the dictionary for Firefox for en-us is corrupted, just a copy of the British English dictionary, or somehow the setting isn't propagated properly. How can I get the American dictionary back?

• Huwaei Modem working fine!

  yesterday I installed Ubuntu 12 in my sony vaio lappy. I have Huwaei E173 3G modem, simply inserted that modem into usb slot, after a few seconds modem started blinking finding as activated. I opened network profile and created a new network under 'Mobile broadband' tab everything was automated and I felt awesome, infact I used net for a while. Next morning, I placed modem into usb, nothing happened, no sign of modem presence even but modem is blinking, I tried creating a new connection once again but attained no luck.   I'm starting a website, that is meant for a non-English region, using an alphabet that is a bit different than that of English. Current plan is as follows. The website name, and the domain name, will be in the local language (not English); however, domain name will be spelled in the English alphabet, while the website's title will be the same word(s), but spelled properly with accents. E.g.: 'www.litterat.fr' and 'Littérat'. Does the difference between domain name and website name character use influence the site's SEO? Is it better, SEO-wise, to choose a name that can be spelled the same way in the English alphabet? From my experience, when searching online, invariably, the English alphabet is used, no matter the language, so people will still be searching 'litterat' (without accents and such).

• How to convert .avi video to .mp4(for Motorola Milestone, Android 2.3.4) with Avidemux

  I open .avi video with Avidemux and I set Video format to MPEG-4 AVC(under Configure, Bitrate tab I choose "Single Pass - Bitrate (Average)" and Target bitrate to 256 kb/s, under Filters I choose MPlayer resize to 480x360 and I also add a subtitles) audio format to AAC (Faac)(Under Configure, I choose Bitrate 96) and format to MP4(like a image below). When Avidemux convert video to .mp4 format I can play the file on my copmuter, but on my phone I can't. When I want to play it on my phone with native video player, it just show the error something like "Can't play this video". So the question is how to convert .avi video to .mp4 with Avidemux(because I want to have subtitles inside movie) to be playable with android phone(Android version 2.3.4) with native player. Any help will be highly appreciated. :)

• Running an old version of some software

  I don't want to mingle in any backstory, but all that needs to be known is that I have a computer with Ubuntu on it and I am trying to install Windows 8 from an ISO. I am using the guide that can be found here which is a little more than four years old. Now, I've been able to accomplish everything up to Step 2, at which point I am stuck. I have downloaded the file found on that page, which can be found here, and have attempted to use it, as directed, quote; "right click the downloaded Unetbootin file, select Properties and on the "Permissions" tab, check the "Allow executing file as program" box. Then simply double click it and it should open." But, after having set checked the specified box and double clicking the file, nothing happens. Nothing is launched and nothing changes. I've been stuck here for several hours now, having failed to find a solution via Google.

• Upgrade from 10.10 to 11:04 to 11.10. X starts, Unity desktop not there

  I upgraded my Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 system to 11.04 and then 11.10. Now, when I start Ubuntu, the Unity desktop doesn't start correctly. Here's what I do: Start computer I log in via the GUI login screen The X Window System starts. I can see an arrow icon for the mouse, and can move it around the screen. Nothing else starts. There are no desktop icons, no launcher, no taskbar, etc. Right clicking on desktop does nothing. I've tried some common keyboard shortcuts ("Alt-tab" "Ctrl-Alt-T" "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace") but nothing happens. If I go to another Virtual Console, and run the command unity, the Unity desktop will start on my primary X desktop. However I'm seeing many problems like windows which are only half-drawn, some applications run without the familiar "Minimize, Maximize, Close" What's happening here? It seems that the X Window System started, but Unity did not start? How can I debug this?

• Do CDNs work with POST operations?

  I'm using a CDN (Level3) for the first time and I'm a bit confused. I'm accessing dynamic URLs such as http://cdn.mysite.com?getItem=1234 that return text data. Do CDNs work with HTTP POST operations? When i issue a HTTP POST operation, my "real" server receives this request every time, so I'm wondering if the CDN has a problem with POST operations. If i use HTTP GET it seems to work, i call the URL once (from my application), i can see my server receiving the request. If i call it a second time, the CDN delivers it directly, my server doesn't get anything. However if i open same the link manually from a second browser tab, my server is asked to deliver again, shouldn't it be cached by now? Many thanks.

• How to disable Alert volume from the command line in Natty?

  There is an option in the Sound Preferences dialog, Sound Effects tab, to toggle Alert volume 'mute'. It works and suffices for my needs to disable the irritating system beep/bell. However, I reinstall systems a LOT for testing purposes and would like to set this setting in a shell script so it's off without having to fiddle with a GUI. But for the life of me I can't seem to find where this can be toggled via a command line tool. I've scanned through gconf-editor, pulseaudio's pacmd, grepped through /etc, even dug through the gnome-volume-control source code, but I am not seeing how this can be set. I gather that gnome-volume-control has changed since a few releases ago. I'm using Natty fwiw. Ideas?
