  • Driver for the Intel GMA X4500HD

    I have a Dell Vostro 220s with the built-in Intel GMA X4500HD graphics adapter. I am using Maverick (10.10). My Philips 190CW 1440 x 900 pixel monitor is connected via the analog path. After a fresh installation of Maverick, this works on various resolutions but 1440 x 900 is not one of the available options. I may need a hardware specific driver. Does a GMA X4500HD driver exist that will work on Maverick?

  • Handy Generic JQuery Functions

    I was a bit of a late-comer to the JQuery party, but now I've been using it for a while it's given me a host of options for adding extra flair to the client side of my applications. Here's a few generic JQuery functions I've written which can be used to add some neat little features to a page. Just call any of them from a document ready function. Apply JQuery Themeroller Styles to all Page Buttons   The JQuery Themeroller is a great tool for creating a theme for a site based on colours and styles for particular page elements. The JQuery.UI library then provides a set of functions which allow you to apply styles to page elements. This function applies a JQuery Themeroller style to all the buttons on a page - as well as any elements which have a button class applied to them - and then makes the mouse pointer turn into a cursor when you mouse over them: function addCursorPointerToButtons() {     $("button, input[type='submit'], input[type='button'], .button") .button().css("cursor", "pointer"); } Automatically Remove the Default Value from a Select Box   Required drop-down select boxes often have a default option which reads 'Please select...' (or something like that), but once someone has selected a value, there's no need to retain that. This function removes the default option from any select boxes on the page which have a data-val-remove-default attribute once one of the non-default options has been chosen: function removeDefaultSelectOptionOnSelect() {     $("select[data-val-remove-default='']").change(function () {         var sel = $(this);         if (sel.val() != "") { sel.children("option[value='']:first").remove(); }     }); } Automatically add a Required Label and Stars to a Form   It's pretty standard to have a little * next to required form field elements.   • JS closures - Passing a function to a child, how should the shared object be accessed

    I have a design and am wondering what the appropriate way to access variables is. I'll demonstrate with this example since I can't seem to describe it better than the title. Term is an object representing a bunch of time data (a repeating duration of time defined by a bunch of attributes) Term has some print functionality but does not implement the print functions itself, rather they are passed in as anonymous functions by the parent. This would be similar to how shaders can be passed to a renderer rather than defined by the renderer. A container (let's call it Box) has a Schedule object that can understand and use Term objects. Box creates Term objects and passes them to Schedule as required. Box also defines the print functions stored in Term. A print function usually takes an argument and uses it to return a string based on that argument and Term's internal data. Sometime the print function could also use data stored in Schedule, though. I'm calling this data shared. So, the question is, what is the best way to access this shared data. I have a lot of options since JS has closures and I'm not familiar enough to know if I should be using them or avoiding them in this case. Options: Create a local "reference" (term used lightly) to the shared data (data is not a primitive) when defining the print function by accessing the shared data through Schedule from Box. Example: var schedule = function(){ var sched = Schedule(); var t1 = Term( function(x){ // Term.print() return (x + sched.data).format(); }); }; Bind it to Term explicitly. (Pass it in Term's constructor or something). Or bind it in Sched after Box passes it. And then access it as an attribute of Term. Pass it in at the same time x is passed to the print function, (from sched). This is the most familiar way for my but it doesn't feel right given JS's closure ability. Do something weird like bind some context and arguments to print. I'm hoping the correct answer isn't purely subjective. If it is, then I guess the answer is just "do whatever works". But I feel like there are some significant differences between the approaches that could have a large impact when stretched beyond my small example.

  • How can I prioritize wireless networks with network-manager

    Mostly I use my laptop in an environment where different wireless networks are available and I would like to preferably connect to one of those and only fall back to the other one if that one is not available. Is there any way of prioritizing which wireless networks network-manager preferably connects to? The only workaround I found so far was unchecking Connect Automatically in the options and re-enabling it when my preferred network is not available.

  • Displaylink USB show "Logo / Loading" on monitor

    I tried with this problem for 2 years already. LOL, today, I install Ubuntu for I have to resolve it or I will back to stupid Windows 7. First, I have 3 monitors. My graphic card is support dual ( ATI Radeon ), so I have no problem on extend those multi monitor on VGA and DVI. The 3rd monitor is Displaylink USB. After installed everything required, when I reboot, the displaylink monitor show "Ubuntu ...." like logo / loading screen. I go to System Display , Detect monitor, it only show my 1st and 2nd, NO 3RD Displaylink. I can move my mouse between those 1st & 2nd, but the 3rd is only show the Ubuntu Screen. I press Ctrl+Alt+1, then screen switch to Displaylink USB 3RD monitor, but its "Terminal" not a desktop. Then I press Ctrl+Alt+7 , the screen switch back to my 1st, 2nd, and the displaylink 3rd is witch back to Logo / Ubuntu again.     Google Analytics has a Multi-Channel funnel analysis feature that we’d like to use to understand assisted conversions and how each channel has impacted on conversion beyond just last interaction attribution. My current understanding is that the impression tracking part of this feature works really well when playing within Google’s search and display networks. Outside of Google’s network I suspect that impression tracking will no longer “just work” and feed back into GA appropriately. What our options are for tracking display impressions on other advertising networks so that we can be attributing value correctly with GA?

  • Dual-boot computer won't boot without external hard drive

    I have Ubuntu loaded on my external HDD. I tried to unplug the external drive so that this way I could run Windows as the default OS to boot when the computer turns on, but it gives me an error. I need to know how I can make it so that when my computers boots it stops saying Error: no such device: (a whole bunch of numbers and letters) then it says grub rescue>_. If I plug the external HDD in, and I let Ubuntu run the boot process, then it gives me a list of OS's/ HDD's to choose from and Windows 7 is there. The only problem is that I want Windows be my default OS, not the other way around. P.S. I have found that I dislike Ubuntu because I can't even figure out how to install the necessary programs to learn how to start writing Ruby On Rails. So installing it was a waste of my time, in my opinion. Now that I have it on the external hard drive, I will leave it installed though. I just dont want to have to keep that external drive plugged in to my computer all the time. Thank you a ton to whoever can help me! Thank you for the detail'd instructions. I am doing my best to follow you and it makes sense when I read it but, Rescatux is not doing what you said it would. None of the options you said would appear are not there. On my screen there is 4 options when MBR run's none look familiar and when I picked the best possible option based on my educated guesses it said success. I tried to restart my computer and it said Please insert windows recovery disc and hit enter. Problem being I don't have the windows recovery disc. I bought my computer from a local Computer tec and he loads windows on it for you. I have no time to run my compute over to him as sunday is my only day free. I think that I just wrecked my computer in the process of this attempted fix windows refuses to boot now WITH or WITHOUT the HDD. Please help this is getting out of hand

    Even though I've selected "Copy folder content locally for offline operation" on my inbox and "Automatically synchronize account locally" in my account options, Evolution still only downloads headers for my inbox. When I click an email, its downloaded from the server. I want all my emails to be available to read offline - As far as I know this should be possible, so is my configuration that's wrong, or is it a bug?

    Is it possible to as a developer using a shared hosting site such as bluehost, hostgator, and the like, to view your site without making it public. Or do the files you upload always go live immediately? Is the best way to test a site (if using shared hosting) to just set up some apache/mysql/php service on my machine?   • But what version is the database now?

    When you upgrade your system to SQL Server 2008 R2, you’ll know that the instance is at that version by using the standard commands like SELECT @@VERSION or EXEC xp_msver. After an upgrade, you always want to make sure that the compatibility options (which have much to do with how NULLs and other objects are treated) is at what you expect. For the most part, as long as the application can handle it, I set my compatibility levels to the latest version. For SQL Server 2008, that was “10.0” or “10”. You can do this with the ALTER DATABASE command or you can just right-click the database and select “Properties” and then “Database Options” in SQL Server Management Studio. To check the database compatibility level, I use this query: SELECT name, cmptlevel FROM sys.sysdatabases When I did that this morning I saw that the databases (all of them) were at 10.0 – not 10.5 like the Instance. That’s expected – we didn’t revise the database format up with the Instance for this particular release. Didn’t want to catch you by surprise on that. While your databases should be at the “proper” level for your situation, you can’t rely on the compatibility level to indicate the Instance level.   • Using SOUNDEX and DIFFERENCE to Standardize Data in SQL Server

    My client wants to standardize address information for existing and future addresses collected for their customers, particularly the street suffixes. The application used to enter and collect address information has the street suffix separated from the address field, but it is a textbox instead of a drop down list therefore things are not standardized. I know there are some options out there to standarize data, but they would like a less expensive alternative. Are there any functions in SQL Server that I can use to standardized data?
