  • Recommendations or advice for shared computer control

    Basic scenario: we are a school (overwhelmingly Mac, some Windows machines via BootCamp), and we are considering using DeepFreeze to guard the state of our shared machines. We have roughly 250 machines that are either shared laptops (which move around quite a bit) or common desktops in public spaces. Obviously, we spend a lot of time maintaining the machines and trying to reverse the inevitable drift as people make changes to the computers. We would like to control the integrity of the build we initially put onto the machines without handcuffing users and especially without using Mac's Parental Control software. (We've had nothing but bad experiences with it.) We've been testing DeepFreeze, and so far it's very impressive. But I'm curious to hear if people who have used DeepFreeze or any similar software have any advice or tips. To get things started, I will post my own pros and cons. Pros: The state of the machine is frozen in our chosen state. All changes made to the machine after that disappear upon restart. (This frozen state really appears to cover everything. I have yet to do something to a test machine that isn't instantly healed.) Tons of trivial but time-consuming maintenance is gone in an instant. Also, lots of not-so-trivial breakage should be avoided. There are good options, however, that allow you to create storage spaces either globally or per user. (Otherwise, stored files disappear upon reboot. For some machines, this is a good option itself. Simply warn people: save externally or else; this machine is a kiosk, not your storage space.) Cons: Anytime we actually need to make a change (upgrade basic software, add a printer or an airport permanently, add new software), the process is a bit more complex. Reboot into a special mode (thaw state), make changes, reboot back into frozen mode. If (when?) we forget this, we will end up making changes that disappear after the next reboot. Users will forget to save files correctly (in the right place or externally), and we will have loud, unpleasant conversations explaining that we can't recover the document they worked on all afternoon yesterday. The machine rebooted. The file is gone. These are my initial thoughts, but I would love to hear from other people who have experience with DeepFreeze or any similar software. What should we be careful about? Do the pros outweigh the cons? What gains or problems am I not seeing? Thanks.

I would like to control the amount of decibels in my speakers and to have a visual speaker in my top panel which indicates the amount of decibels in my computer at each given time How can you solve at least one of the problems?

  • Install Windows control panel applet in Wine

    I want to add the bthprops.cpl dll (The bluetooth control panel applet) to my wine install under Ubuntu 10.04 since it is required for Dolphin Emulator. http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/ I copied the file from my windows install into the System32 folder in .wine and into the folder where the application I am trying to run is, but wine still fails to load it. Is there anything else I need to do to make the dll accessible for wine programs? (Please don't suggest the native linux Version of Dolphin as a fix - it is not working for me)

  • Windows 7 sound control is not flexible.

    I would like to be able to listen to music on both of two audio output devices, but Windows 7 seems to only allow me to select one or the other as the Default device. When device A is the Default device, device B is muted; and vice versa. This seems to be stunningly inflexible. Since Windows 7 is unable to do this, can anyone recommend any add-on software that would control the hardware more flexibly and thoughtfully?

Scan an IP address range -- This method allows you to specify the starting address and ending address of an IP address range. The wizard will then scan all IP addresses in the range and inventory only those computers. Note: This option can perform poorly, if many IP addresses aren’t being used within the range. Manually enter computer names and credentials -- Use this method if you want to inventory a small number of specific computers. Import computer names from a files -- Using this method, you can create a text file with a list of computer names that will be inventoried. 4. On the All Computers Credentials page, enter the accounts that have administrator rights to connect to the discovered machines. This does not need to a domain account, but needs to be a local administrator. I have entered my domain account that is an administrator on my local machine. Click Next after one or more accounts have been added. NOTE: The MAP Toolkit primarily uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to collect hardware, device, and software information from the remote computers. In order for the MAP Toolkit to successfully connect and inventory computers in your environment, you have to configure your machines to inventory through WMI and also allow your firewall to enable remote access through WMI. The MAP Toolkit also requires remote registry access for certain assessments. In addition to enabling WMI, you need accounts with administrative privileges to access desktops and servers in your environment. 5. On the Credentials Order page, select the order in which want the MAP Toolkit to connect to the machine and SQL Server. Generally just accept the defaults and click Next. 6. On the Enter Computers Manually page, click Create to pull up at dialog to enter one or more computer names. 7. On the Summary page confirm your settings and then click Finish. After clicking Finish the inventory process will start, as shown below: Windows Azure Readiness results and report After the inventory progress has completed, you can review the results under the Database scenario. On the tile, you will see the number of Windows Server machine with SQL Server that were analyzed, the number of machines that are ready to move without changes and the number of machines that require further changes. If you click this Azure VM Readiness tile, you will see additional details and can generate the Windows Azure VM Readiness Report. After the report is generated, select View | Saved Reports and Proposals to view the location of the report. Open up WindowsAzureVMReadiness* report in Excel. On the Windows tab, you can see the results of the assessment. This report has a column for the Operating System and SQL Server assessment and provides a recommendation on how to resolve, if there a component is not supported. Collect Performance Data Launch the Performance Wizard to collect performance information for the Windows Server machines that you would like the MAP Toolkit to suggest a Windows Azure VM size for.     Hello. I'm really interested in learning really advanced features of WPF to learn how to create advanced controls, but apparently I'm running out of resources, and possibly, imagination. I have these 4 books: WPF Control Development Unleashed Experiences Pro WPF 2008 Presentation Professionals Programming WPF Chris Sells WPF in Action Visual Studio 2008 One finished, two other half way, the other one just started. I sort of expected more from the "WPF Control Development Unleashed" one. Anyway, do you know any more books about advanced WPF features, and control building? Or even about how WPF works internally. Let me know what are your favorite WPF books, maybe I've overlooked some of them. Thanks!

    Hi, in my current project I used a AsyncFileUpload control from AJAX Control Toolkits. After I got the async file upload part working, I needed to filter the file type so users can only upload image files. I found the following code off web and it worked well: function uploadStarted(sender, args) { var filename = args.get_fileName(); var filext = filename.substring(filename.lastIndexOf(".") + 1); if (filext == "jpg" || filext == "jpeg" || filext == "gif" || filext == "bmp") { return true; } else { // force uploading cancel args.set_cancel(true); // set reason of cancel args.set_errorMessage("Invalid File Format Selected"); return false; } } The problem is : I don't understand this javascript. What is the type of args parameter? Where are the methods such as "get_fileName()", "set_cancel()" defined? I went to the homepage of the AsyncFileUpload control but couldn't find any documentation regarding the "args". Can someone help me out explaining this Javascript? Thanks

  • Winform custom control in WPF

    Hi, I'm inserting a custom winform control in a WPF/ XAML window, however i'm realising that the sizing seems to be very different, what i designed in winform to be 730pixels wide for instance, when placed via a WindowsFormsHost, in a container 730pixels (or at least i think they're pixels..) wide, the control looks much larger and doesnt fit in the host and results in clipping from the right and bottom. Would anyone know how to make these sizes match or something? I'm really at a loss and its very difficult to fix a custom control to make it look as it should off hand on WPF! Please help!

  • Why is my CalendarExtender getting overlapped when rendered?

    I'm working on a .NET web application and I'm using a CalendarExtender control within it to have the user specify a date. For some reason, when I click the icon to display the calendar, the background seems to be transparent, shown below: I'm using the extender on other pages and do not run into this issue. I'm not sure if it is worth mentioning, but the calendar is nested within a panel that has a rounded corner extender attached to it, as well as the panel below it (where the "From" is overlapping). Within that panel, I do have a div layout setup to create two columns. EDIT: The other thing to note here is that the section that has the name and "placeholders" for nickname are all ASP.NET label controls, if that matters.

    How do you enable actions like Goto line number Find(/Replace) There don't appear to be default triggers for these actions. There are a bunch of methods on the control, but I'm missing the first step of how to get the 'events' that would trigger these. For instance, how does one hook ctrl+f or F3/Alt+F3 in the control and make them do a find? Should I be looking at each key using EVT_STC_KEY? Would also like any examples of using this control with Custom language definition (say something similar to C++, but not C++) Auto completion (basic keywords to start, or including variables)

    Hello, I have an asp.net user control, userControl1.ascx, and another user control, userControl2.ascx. userControl2 is inside userControl1. userControl1 is inside an UpdatePanel control. userControl2 has a button in it then I want to have do a normal post back when pushed. I want to use ScriptManager.RegisterPostBackControl(button). I have a ScriptManager on a master page. I don't know how to access the ScriptManager in userControl2 to register the button in the Page_Load event. So, How can I do this?

    Hi, I am trying to create a wpf control that will display a map image using google maps. I want to be able to centre the map on a longitude and latitude specified by the application. Ideally, the control will then allow the user to move a map marker and store the latitude/longitude of the marker in the application. The only way I can think of doing this is to use a WebBrowser control and create a HTML string at runtime that shows a map of the desired location. This seems like an awkward solution and won't allow me to easily retrieve the marker location. Does anyone know of a better way to accomplish this?

    How do you set the visibility of a (fileupload) control from ASP.net code (I need to hide a fileupload control in a webuser control from server site, otherwise hasFIle is always false). Also setting the "Visible" property to false does not work (as is confuses the AJAX panel so the fileupload forgets that it has a file). theFileUpload.Visible = false = does not work so I want to try to set the CSS style visibility to hidden or display to none. The main problem is I want to do it from the server side (I know how I could do it on client). Is there a safe way to overwrite theFileUpload.Attributes["styles"] in case I modify other CSS styles in there, also throwing a whole CSS class at it (by moidifying the CSSClass property) seems like overkill. thanks in advance Axel

    Hello All: I am creating a web application using Asp.net dynamic data. I am using GridView to show data from the database. In the grid view I am having following code for columns <Columns> <asp:DynamicField DataField="UserId" UIHint="Label" /> <asp:DynamicField DataField="Address" UIHint="Address"/> <asp:DynamicField DataField="CreatedDate" UIHint="Label" /> </Columns> But, before displaying I want to do some processing in C# code for each row. In normal ASP.net grid view we can handle OnRowDataBound method, and using FindControl("controlid") we can get the control instance, but in case of dynamic data, I am not getting any id attribute for columns, so I am not able to get the control instance to show updated data in that control depending on some conditions.     I am looking how to approach following problem: We have application that displays text with audio recorded material. We use Browser Control (Internet Explorer) in Delphi App to do this. We respond to events in Delphi code setting innerHTML for elements if we have to update the style ... Now, request is to add option to dynamically move the cursor or dynamically highlight the words spoken from the paragraph. It doesn't need to match absolutely the exact word spoken so we will have to dynamically update the content of position of highlighted word based on some timer or something (because it is not text to speach). What should be the most practical and easy approach to this kind of problem, all answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
