• Storing dates as UTC in database

  I am storing date/times in the database as UTC and computing them inside my application back to local time based on the specific timezone. Say for example I have the following date/time: 01/01/2010 00:00 Say it is for a country e.g. UK which observes DST (Daylight Savings Time) and at this particular time we are in daylight savings. When I convert this date to UTC and store it in the database it is actually stored as: 31/12/2009 23:00 As the date would be adjusted -1 hours for DST. This works fine when your observing DST. However, what happens when the clock is adjusted back? When I pull that date from the database and convert it to local time that particular datetime would be seen as 31/12/2009 23:00 when in reality it was processed as 01/01/2010 00:00. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this a bit of a flaw when storing times as UTC?

• How essential is it to make a service layer?

  I started building an app in 3 layers (DAL, BL, UI) [it mainly handles CRM, some sales reports and inventory]. A colleague told me that I must move to service layer pattern, that developers came to service pattern from their experience and it is the better approach to design most applications. He said it would be much easier to maintain the application in the future that way. Personally, I get the feeling that it's just making things more complex and I couldn't see much of a benefit from it that would justify that. This app does have an additional small partial ui that uses some (but only few) of the desktop application functions so I did find myself duplicating some code (but not much). Just because of some code duplication I wouldn't convert it to be service oriented, but he said I should use it anyway because in general it's a very good architecture, why programmers are so in love with services?? I tried to google on it but I'm still confused and can't decide what to do.

• Do I have to remove VS 2010 beta1 in order to get a web app to work on asp.net 2.0?

  I think the title is enough :). I have VS 2010 beta1 installed, and I wish to run an asp.net mvc application on my local IIS. The problem is, the asp.net 4.0 runtime is selected by default for all the web sites, when I try to change it to asp.net 2.0, I get the following error message: I click yes, then ok, and when I get back to the ASP.NET tab of my site's properties, I see the 4.0 version is selected back again! Do I have to remove VS 2010 in order to get this to work? (hopefully not) Ps: I'm using windows XP and IIS 5.1

• [C#] How to consume web service adheres to the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern?

  I am following the example from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8wy069k1.aspx to consume a web service implemented (by 3rd party) using the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern. However, my program needs to do multiple calls to the DoStuffAsync() hence will get back as many DoStuffCompleted. I chose the overload which takes an extra parameter - Object userState to distinguish them. My first question is: Is it valid to cast a GUID to Object as below, where GUID is used to generate unique taskID? Object userState = Guid.NewGuid(); Secondly, do I need to spawn off a new thread for each DoStuffAsync() call, since I am calling it multiple times? Also, would be nice to have some online examples or tutorials on this subject. (I've been googling for it the whole day and didn't get much back) Many thanks

We chatted about learning Xcode and Objective-C, provisioning devices and the app publishing process. We all have a .NET background and made lots of comparisons between the two platforms/ecosystems/fanbois. They even let me throw in a plug for Christian Radio Locator. Jeff was my first contact with the Kansas City .NET community. It was probably about 10 years ago. He pushed me to talk more (and rescued me from my first talk that bombed) and blog more. One time a group of us took a 16 hour car trip to South Carolina for a code camp and live podcasted the whole thing.   Say my company is going to build a complicated asp.net web form education system. One of the module is web based registration. To make it flexiable, we decide to use user control(ascx) with rule-engine (work flow) regulating all business logic behide them. Thus in future,for different clients, we can simply config basic existing rules or adding new rules.(Rules stored in db or XML per client). Now the question is how to deal with the user controls (ascx)? My opinion is for different client build diffrent user control from scratch. other voice is like reuse existing user controls.

• Blogger Template not saving after Facebook like changes

  I've add the facebook Like button to http://www.goldfishview.com/ and that works great. Its powered by Blogger. Now I want to move it to the end of my posts instead of a the beginning. I move the facebook iframe and the preview looks great, but once I save the template it reverts back to were it was. I've tried in Chrome and Firefox. In Chrome after I click preview the save template button becomes useless and doesn't do anything when I click on it. In Firefox everything looks like it takes, but on page refresh the iFrame goes back to its original position. Am I crazy?

• How to retrieve a bigint from a database and place it into an Int64 in SSIS

  I ran into this problem a couple years back and am hoping there has been a fix and I just don't know about it. I am using an 'Execute SQL Task' in the Control Flow of an SSIS package to retrieve a 'bigint' ID value. The task is supposed to place this in an Int64 SSIS variable but I getting the error: "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::AuditID" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object." When I brought this to MS' attention a couple years back they stated that I had to 'work around' this by placing the bigint into an SSIS object variable and then converting the value to Int64 as needed. • IIS Virtual Directory/Application & Forms authentication

  I've setup and deployed a simple forms authentication website with membership using .NET 4. I've created a virtual directory (now converted to "Application") in IIS7 and setup the web.config file in the virtual directory as follows: <system.webServer> <directoryBrowse enabled="true" /> </system.webServer> Great! I browse to the virtual directory: ../mydomain/books/ and I'm automatically redirected to the login page specified by web.config in my root directory and the url path is placed as follows: ../Account/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fbooks At this point, I login succesfully, but I am not redirected anywhere, and when I manually return to the directory, ../books, I'm sent back to the login page, where I'm already logged in? So I'm confused about what my problem is! I should be successfully authenticated, and than redirected back to the directory, or at the very least be able to view it manually after I log in right?

  I'm in the process of setting up a (one man) company and got to a item on my list "contracts and insurance". I will primary be offering custom software development but may also offer some "open source solutions", install, configure / manage e.t.c. I'm not sure how to approach a contract with a potential customer. I want to be flexible and offer the customer rights over the product (when not using open source of course) but I obviously want / need to be able to reuse code, already written and any future work. Is this possible or is it just something that people do but strictly they shouldn't? Is there a standard freelancing / contacting developer agreement? Going to a lawyer I'm sure is an answer but a very expensive one! If not do you end up with a fresh contract with each job / client and lots of trips to solicitors?

• "./configure: command not found" error when trying to install the JRE

  I was trying to install JRE on my 64-bit ubuntu 10.04 installation. Just to be sure that that is what I really want, I need to run a .jar file. I downloaded java from this link. Then I chose linux x64 and downloaded the tar file, I extracted it and tried to compile the source code but had the error. I don't know whether I downloaded the wrong file or I ran the wrong commands in the terminal After I changed directory using the cd command to the extracted directory, I tried ./configure but I got this error: ./configure: command not found I know that there is an easier way to install java but I just want to understand how to install an application from source in linux as it seems that I will face this problem in the future. • Is there a recommended approach to handle saving data in response to within-site navigation without

  Hello all, Preamble to scope my question: I have a web app (or site, this is an internal LAN site) that uses jQuery and AJAX extensively to dynamically load the content section of the UI in the browser. A user navigates the app using a navigation menu. Clicking an item in the navigation menu makes an AJAX call to php, and php then returns the content that is used to populate the central content section. One of the pages served back by php has a table form, set up like a spreadsheet, that the user enters values into. This table is always kept in sync with data in the database. So, when the table is created, is it populated with the relevant database data. Then when the user makes a change in a "cell", that change immediately is written back to the database so the table and database are always in sync. This approach was take to reassure users that the data they entered has been saved (long story...), and to alleviate them from having to click a save button of some kind. So, this always in sync idea is great, except that a user can enter a value in a cell, not take focus out of the cell, and then take any number of actions that would cause that last value to be lost: e.g. navigate to another section of the site via the navigation menu, log out of the app, close the browser, etc. End of preamble, on to the issue: I initially thought that wasn't a problem, because I would just track what data was "dirty" or not saved, and then in the onunload event I would do a final write to the database. Herein lies the rub: because of my clever (or not so clever, not sure) use of AJAX and dynamically loading the content section, the user never actually leaves the original url, or page, when the above actions are taken, with the exception of closing the browser. Therefore, the onunload event does not fire, and I am back to losing the last data again. My question, is there a recommended way to handle figuring out if a person is navigating away from a "section" of your app when content is dynamically loaded this way? I can come up with a solution I think, that involves globals and tracking the currently viewed page, but I thought I would check if there might be a more elegant solution out there, or a change I could make in my design, that would make this work. • How do Expires headers and cache manifest rules work together?

  I find the W3C's official Offline Web Applications specification to be rather vague about how the cache manifest interacts with headers such as ETag, Expires, or Pragma on cached assets. I know that the manifest should be checked with each request so that the browser knows when to check the other assets for updates. But because the specification doesn't define how the cache manifest interacts with normal cache instructions, I can't predict precisely how the browser will react. Will assets with a future expiration date be refreshed (no matter the cache headers) when the cache manifest is updated? Or, will those assets obey the normal caching rules? Which caching mechanism, HTTP cache versus cache manifest, will take precedence, and when?

• Java app makes screen display unresponsive after 10 minutes of user idle time

  I've written a Java app that allows users to script mouse/keyboard input (JMacro, link not important, only for the curious). I personally use the application to automate character actions in an online game overnight while I sleep. Unfortunately, I keep coming back to the computer in the morning to find it unresponsive. Upon further testing, I'm finding that my application causes the computer to become unresponsive after about 10 minutes of user idle time (even if the application itself it simulating user activity). I can't seem to pin-point the issue, so I'm hoping somebody else might have a suggestion of where to look or what might be causing the issue. The relevant symptoms and characteristics: Unresponsiveness occurs after user is idle for 10 minutes User can still move the mouse pointer around the screen Everything but the mouse appears frozen... mouse clicks have no effect and no applications update their displays, including the Windows 7 desktop I left the task manager up along the with the app overnight so I could see the last task manager image before the screen freezes... the Java app is at normal CPU/Memory usage and total CPU usage is only ~1% After moving the mouse (in other words, the user comes back from being idle), the screen image starts updating again within 30 minutes (this is very hit and miss... sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes no results after two hours) User can CTRL-ALT-DEL to get to Windows 7's CTRL-ALT-DEL screen (after a 30 second pause). User is still able to move mouse pointer, but clicking any of the button options causes the screen to appear to freeze again On some very rare occasions, the system never freezes, and I come back to it in the morning with full responsiveness The Java app automatically stops input scripting in the middle of the night, so Windows 7 detects "real" idleness and turns the monitors into Standby mode... which they successfully come out of upon manually moving the mouse in the morning when I wake up, even though the desktop display still appears frozen Given the symptoms and characteristics of the issue, it's as if the Java app is causing the desktop display of the logged in user to stop updating, including any running applications. Programming concepts and Java packages used: Multi-threading Standard out and err are rerouted to a javax.swing.JTextArea The application uses a Swing GUI awt.Robot (very heavily used) awt.PointerInfo awt.MouseInfo System Specs: Windows 7 Professional Java 1.6.0 u17 In conclusion, I should stress that I'm not looking for any specific solutions, as I'm not asking a very specific question. I'm just wondering if anybody has run into a similar problem when using the Java libraries that I'm using. I would also gladly appreciate any suggestions for things to try to attempt to further pinpoint what is causing my problem. Thanks!   I'm looking for a primary source (or a really good explanation) to back up the claim that the use of autorelease is dangerous or overly expensive when writing software for the iPhone. Several developers make this claim, and I have even heard that Apple does not recommend it, but I have not been able to turn up any concrete sources to back it up. SO references: autorelease-iphone Why does this create a memory leak (iPhone)? Note: I can see, from a conceptual point of view, that autorelease is slightly more expensive than a simple call to release, but I don't think that small penalty is enough to make Apple recommend against it. What's the real story?

  My current project uses JSON as data interchange format. Both Front-end and Back-end team agree upon a JSON structure before start integrating a service. At times due to un-notified changes in JSON structure by back-end team; it breaks the front-end code. Is there any external library that we could use to compare a mock JSON (fixture) with servers JSON response. Basically it should assert the whole JSON object and should throw an error if there is any violation in servers JSON format. Additional info: App is built on JQuery consuming REST JSON services.

• Remove third/nth level domains from google Index

  Somehow google has indexed some third(and fourth!) level domains that I had attached to my server temporarily, eg. my.domain.root.com. I now have these redirected properly where I would like them to go, however with a carefully crafted search one can still find them and I'd rather they not be exposed. My google foo skills have failed me in finding an answer, so I come to you wonderful folks: Is there a way/How do I remove sub-level domains from google search results? I have the site in google webmaster tools and verified, but all the URL removal requests I can perform append the url to the base url, not prefixed. And finally, how can I prevent this in the future?

  I have noticed that this is a frequent issue among younglings from technical areas such as ours. In the beginning of our careers we simply don't know how to sell ourselves to our employers, and random guy #57 (who is a programmer, but not as good as you - technically) ends up getting a raise/promotion just because he knows how to communicate and market himself better than you. Many have probably seen this happen in the past, and most certainly many more will in the future. What kind of skill/ability (either technical, or of other nature) do you think is relevant to point out when doing a job interview or asking for a raise, besides listing all the programming languages and libraries you know?

  I have a website with brandspace theme from pixelentity. Currently, the slider move from right to left ( auto transition) . But, when the slider reaches the last image, it will go back to the first image by making all previous images sliding back from left to right. I want to make the slider to have a normal transition,i.e. going back to first image but still with the image sliding from right to left. • In C#, is there any way to try multiple Regexes on string to see which one matches first?

  Let's say I have an arbitrary list of regexes (IList<Regex> lst; for example). Is there any way to find out which one matches first? Of course there is the straightforward solution of trying each one on the string and seeing which match has the lowest index, but this could be inefficient on long strings. Of course I can go back and pull the strings back out of each regex (Regex.ToString()) and concatenate them all together ("(regex1)|(regex2)|(regex3)"), but I find this to be an ugly solution, especially since it does not even indicate which regex was matched.
