  • pam_tty_audit and non privileged users

    I'm working on a cents 6.3 box and am trying to log all commands executed from a bash shell and came across pam_tty_audit. I've added the appropriate line to my /etc/pam.d/system-auth file: "session required pam_tty_audit.so enable=*" The problem is that it does not appear to capture commands unless a user is root. For example, if i ssh in as root it logs everything to the audit log, but if I ssh as a regular user it does not start logging anything until after I have su to root. Any ideas?

  • Which hardware to VM ratio for Build-Server virtualization?

    Let's start with saying that I'm a total noob wrt. to server virtualization. That is, I use VMs often during development, but they're simple desktop machine things for me. Now to my problem: We have two (physical) build servers, one master, one slave running Jenkins to do daily tasks and build (Visual C++ Builds) our release packages for our software. As such these machines are critical to our company, because we do lot's releases and without a controlled environment to create them, we can't ship fixes. (And currently there's no proper backup of these machines in place, because they do not hold any data as such - it just would be a major pain to setup them again should they go bust. (But setting up backup that I'd know would work in case of HW failure would even be more pain, so we have skipped that until now.)) Therefore (and for scaling purposes) we would like to go virtual with these machines. Outsourcing to the cloud is not an option, not at all, so we'll have to use on-premises hardware and VM hosts. Each Build-Server (master or slave) is a fully configured (installs, licenses, shares in case of the master, ...) Windows Server box. I would now ideally like to just convert the (two) existing physical nodes to VM images and run them. Later add more VM slave instances as clones of the existing ones. And here begin my questions: Should I go for one VM per one hardware-box or should I go for something where a single hardware runs multiple VMs? That would mean a single point of failure hardware wise and doesn't seem like a good idea ... or?? Since we're doing C++ compilation with Visual Studio, I assume that during a build the hardware (processor cores + disk) will be fully utilized, so going with more than one build-node per hardware doesn't seem to make much sense?? Wrt. to hardware options, does it make any difference which VM software we use (VMWare, MS, Virtualbox, ... ?) (We're using Windows exclusively for our builds.) Regarding budget: We have a normal small company (20 developers) budget for this. ;-) That is, if it's going to cost a few k$ it's going to cost. If it's free - the better. I strongly prefer solutions where there's no multi-k$ maintenance costs per year.

  • Icons in windows 8 changed automatically

    The icons of my folders in Windows 8 have changed automatically ! Now it is similar to that of the Unknown File Type icon. My C: drive icon and some icons in the Explorer-Home menu had also changed, but they became normal after a restart. But the folder icons (Medium Size) don't change.   • What is the best way to make a test duplicate of an AD DC?

    I have a production Active Directory Server running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. I would like to make a duplicate of this machine with all setting the same, except the domain would be a slight variation of the current domain (think winnet to winnet2). Would it be easiest to try to clone the hard drive while the machine is running and change the domain on the clone in a different machine or export the data and import it on a different box?

  • How can I control when Microsoft Security Essentials Updates Itself?

    I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on a Windows Vista SP2 box. Every day in the 4 PM hour MSE updates itself: The green fortress icon in the notification area displays an animated download arrow, and my computer becomes unusably sluggish for five minutes (or more). I'm generally forced to take a coffee break or read a magazine. How can I control the time of day when this update occurs? Sometime after 9 PM would be ideal. Thanks.

It has windows 2008 x64 standard The SQL install is SQL 2008 standard The virtual machine has 12gb of RAM, and 4 virtual CPU The box is suffering from near 100% CPU a lot of the time I enabled the AWE- but SQL server only seems to use 3-4gb of RAM Is there a way of making it use more available ram more effectively? cache results for example..?

    Besides switching the default audio device, how can I send the audio from one app (say x-box music) to one audio device, and another (say the video app) to another audio device?     I'm thinking of getting a budget color laserjet. Will I need to buy four toner cartridges at the same time I get the printer, or do they come with starter toner cartridges? If there is toner with it, any idea how many pages I can get on what's in the box? The Samsung CL-315 or the HP Color LaserJet CP1215, both under $200, are good examples of the class of printer I'm looking at. Thanks!

  • VNC connection through machine with only SSH port open

    I would like to make a VNC connection from home to a Windows machine at work. The Windows machine is not accessible from the outside, but there is a Linux box that does have port 22 open, so it would seem that this can be done. I suspect it's just a command that "forwards" connections to port 22 on the Linux machine to the Windows machine? Just can't find an example that does exactly this though Thanks in advance!

    I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

There is no lines with COMMAND string for this user. It performs some type of hostname lookup, which I can not determine. If I ssh to another host: $ssh [email protected] Last login: Wed Apr 7 21:14:51 2010 from 123-234-321-123-some.cal.isp.net.example hi there, you are on box 456 line 1 is my command line 2 is again, where my question comes from line 3 is from /etc/motd *The dash'd IP address is not reversed On this remote host, I have ~/.ssh and it's corresponding keys set up, so there was no password request Where is the "Last Login:" coming from, where does the date stamp come from, and most importantly, where does the hostname come from? While on [email protected] (box 456) $echo hostname remote.location.example456.com Or with dig, to make sure I have rDNS/PTR set up, for which I am not authoritative, but my ISP has correctly set... $dig -x 123.234.321.123 PTR remote.location.example456.com or $dig PTR 123.321.234.123.in-addr.arpa. +short remote.location.example456.com. my previous hostname used to be 123-234-321-123-some.cal.isp.net.example, which I set with hostname -s remote.location.example456.com, because it was obnoxious to see such a long name. That solves the value of $echo hostname which now returns remote.location.example456.com. Mac OS X, 10.6 is this case, does seem to honor: touch ~/.hushlogin If leave that file empty, I get nothing on the shell when I login. I want to know what controls the host resolution of the IP, and how it is all working. For example, running last reports a huge list of my logins, which have obtusely long hostnames, when they would be preferable to just be remote.location.example456.com. More confusing to me, reading the man page for wtmp and lastlog, it looks like lastlog is not used on OS X, /var/log/lastlog does not exist. Actually, none of these exist on 10.5 or 10.6: /var/run/utmp The utmp file. /var/log/wtmp The wtmp file. /var/log/lastlog The lastlog file. If I am to assume that the system is doing some kind of reverse lookup, I certainly do not know what it is, as it is not an accurate one.

  • Application that will identify percentage of your system disk bandwidth used on a user-application by user-application basis?

    I always (subjectively) feel my computer is far too slow (however fast it is), and so I'm always looking for ways to measure and understand what my computer is actually doing, that is making it seem "slow" to me. It has been my observation that my software-developer workload is most often disk-bound (I am waiting for Disk I/O) more than CPU bound. What has made it worse, is that I am using a corporate PC that has in-memory active-scanning anti-virus software that I do not have control over, and also some IT department mandated services that seem to suck up a lot of available hard-disk bandwidth. The best tool I have seen (in Windows 7) is the Resource Monitor which I usually acess from the button in the task Manager. The disk IO page, however, seems to label Disk Activity at a very low level (for example, showing the Volume Shadow Storage, which is flushing information obviously written by something ELSE other than VSS itself, and then writes to Pagefile.sys, which are obviously due to Virtual Memory faults in some application). What I would like to know is if a utility exists that can add up all direct disk input and output by user-level process, or find the process or service that caused VM or VSS activity. In that way, I hope, you could establish a real idea of how much of your computer's precious disk subsystem bandwidth is attributable to a particular application. here's a scenario: MyApp.exe writes 100k/s and reads 100k/s directly. VSS ends up writing another 100k/s. pagefaults caused inside MyApp.exe cause another 100k/s of writes. So the total "cost" of MyApp.exe running, during a period of time (let's say 1 second) is 400k/s, whereas you can only directly observe half of that, in Resource Monitor. Is there a smarter disk-IO watching piece of software I can use?
