  • Backing up locally modified and new source files

    I'm wondering how other programmers are backing up changes that are not under source control yet, be it new files or modified ones. I'm mostly referring to medium size jobs - hardly worth the effort of making a private branch, but taking more than a day to complete. This is not a vendor-specific question - I'd like to see if various products have different solutions to the problem. I'd appreciate answers referring to SVN and distributed SCCs, though. I'm mostly wondering about that latters (Mercurial, GIT etc.) - it's great that you have your own local repo, but do you back it up on a regular basis along with your source files? Note - I'm not asking about a general backup strategy. For that, we have IT. I'm seeking the best way to keep locally modified stuff backed-up before they are checked back into the main repo.

  • WndProc(ref Message m), Prevent minimize Games, Send key strokes.

    Overview: I am going to create a touch application that interfaces with games and other apps. This concept is similar to the app found on touch-buddy.com but I will be using C# and WPF instead of how the application is written in Perl. I have a few challenges I would like to evaluate. The touch-buddy app uses two approaches while interacting with games; 1. Client mode (Same machine runs both game and touch-buddy). 2. Server / Client mode where a separate box sends commands to the game machine. The reason I believe for this method was to circumvent the issue with games minimizing. In Client only mode I am faced with the issue where I touch a screen OTHER than the main screen where the game is viewed and then the game minimizes. Not all games have this behavior but I would like to conquer the games that do minimize and prevent it. Is it possible to keep a game front and center Focused and prevent minimizing utilizing C# WndProc(ref Message m)? I have been experimenting with WndProc(ref Message m) where I created a win form and when I press minimize on my own Win form and it will close an instance of notepad. This proves to me that I can capture a message, prevent that message from bubbling up and then send a message to another application. I then tried to click on notepad with my touch screen and keep my win form application in focus and not minimize. At this point I am unsuccessful. I need more time understanding message codes. Is this the right approach? Can it be done? Should I look at other libraries such as Windows Automation? Key input is my other concern. What is the best way to send key strokes to other apps/games. Should I tap into DirectX, use some kind of send key, Automation Framework? Can any of these handle the multiple key strokes that some simulation games require? I appreciate any links and or insight you may have. If you have gone down this path for any reason I would love to hear your comments. Stan

  • Reverse massive text file in Java

    What would be the best approach to reverse a large text file that is uploaded asynchronously to a servlet that reverses this file in a scalable and efficient way? text file can be massive (gigabytes long) can assume mulitple server/clustered environment to do this in a distributed manner. open source libraries are encouraged to consider I was thinking of using Java NIO to treat file as an array on disk (so that I don't have to treat the file as a string buffer in memory). Also, I am thinking of using MapReduce to break up the file and process it in separate machines. Any input is appreciated. Thanks. Daniel

  • Algorithm to distribute objects in a box (like InDesign, Illustrator, Draw!)

    I have a set of rectangles with their corresponding positions and a big rectangle which serves as the 'bounding box' for these rectangles. I would like to know of an algorithm that would 'distribute the free space' evenly among the rectangles. Some of you may be familiar with the Distribute Spacing option in Adobe InDesign and similar layout-oriented apps. That would be what I'm looking for. I did try looking it up, but I'm not familiar with 'graphical' algorithms terminology and trying only terms relating to 'distribute' mainly yields results about Distributed Computing. So, even the names of the algorithms or better terms to look up would be a big help. Finally, the algorithm doesn't need to be rigorously the same as InDesign's one: pretty much any algorithm that 'distributes' objects inside a region will work fine. In fact, since I'm striving for visual appeal mainly, the more suggestions the better. =D

  • Is there a language designed for code golf?

    I am not really a fan of code golf, but I have to wonder, is there an esoteric language designed for it? I mean a language with following properties: Common programs may be expressed in very short amount of characters It uses ASCII character set effectively (for example, common operators are not identifiers, so they don't have to be separated by whitespace, character usage is distributed more or less evenly because we cannot use Huffman coding and so on) Except the terse syntax, it should have very expressible and clean semantics (like, let's say, Python or Scheme); it shouldn't be difficult to program in It doesn't need features for large scale programs, such as OOP, but it definitely should allow custom functions and data structures It should have a large standard library, identifiers in this library should be as short as possible Maybe it should be called CG? Languages that can be a source of inspiration are Forth, APL and Joy.

    im moving from a c# VS2008 world into the mac world and I just wanted to know how I can create a quick little command line based application so that I can write many little objective-c apps without worrying about creating an iPhone app or whatever. Which projects do I create in xcode? I can see the Command Line Tool under "Mac os x" but the only options for the type is "C", "C++", "Core Data", "Core Foundation", "Core Services" and "Foundation" but no simple objective c project? I thought of SOLR because: It's got a bunch of tokenizers and performs a lot of NLP. It's pretty use to use out of the box. It's restful distributed app, so it's easy to hook up I've spent some time with it, so using could save me time. Can I use Solr? Although the above reasons are good, I don't know SOLR THAT well, so I need to know if it would be appropriate for my requirements. Ideal Usage Ideally, I'd like to configure SOLR, and then be able to send SOLR some text, and retrieve the indexed tonkenized content. Context So you guys know, I'm working on a small component of a bigger recommendation engine.

    I'm using will_paginate in a facebook application and when i click on the next button or a page number i get the url below. This is fine if everyone was using safari, but it breaks on ie and ff. Anyway, I'm really interested in OpenID and I would like to implement OpenID authentication and maybe some Sreg stuff in a Rails app. All of the research that I have done has come up with articles that are out of date or just don't work for me.   • RVM: how can I dynamically export gem executable directory in my path?

    I installed rvm as root to setup an Ubuntu LTS 8.04 as a web hosting server for my rails apps. rvm is installed in: /usr/local/rvm Everything works fine, gems installation included and users are able to use ruby and gem commands. sudo gem install rails My problem is that the gems EXECUTABLE DIRECTORY is not included in my PATH and thus I cannot use rails command. Is there a way to dynamycally include gems executable directory in my PATH? Can it be done directly through rvm?

When the user takes a picture, the phone plays the familiar camera shutter sound. How can I replace this with my own custom sound? As far as I understand native xml databases might form a proper solution for my case. They obviously store xml documents in highly efficient way. It would be great to learn your experience.
