  • Software that will extract the individual audio channels from a WMA file

    I have a 6 channel WMA file and I would like to extract each of those 6 channels into its own mono WAV file. This is a simple task with AC-3 audio files, but apparently not with WMA. I could re-encode the WMA as an AC-3 then extract the streams, but I want lossless solution. Please only confirmed solutions. I have put a lot of time into searching for a solution and have had my fill of "try this" and "this might work".

  • How do I install automake and autoconf on RedHat Enterprise 5?

    I am attempting to install "uploadprogress" for a PHP application, and have failed on dependencies. Firstly, on phpize, then php-devel, then on autoconf and automake. I have tried yum, and various repositories, with no luck. I think it's to do with the ultra-tight but annoying set up they have on Rackspace Cloud servers. Does anyone know where I can find a repository that I can tell yum to look at that will contain php-devel, autoconf, automake, etc? Thanks ever so much.   • Need for page file with 12 GB RAM

    Hi, I recently got my new PC with 12 GB RAM (running Windows 7 64bit). The default installation suggests a 12 GB page file on the system drive (which I think is both inefficient and expensive on a SSD drive...) I'm wondering if I need any virtual memory at all, 12 GB being more than I had on my previous machine including the page file (I had 3GB RAM + 3GB pagefile).   • Can't access files on external drive after reformatting Macbook Pro

    I recently had to reformat my Macbook Pro, and imported my account and settings from Time Machine via the Migration Assistant. Everything on the Mac itself is fine, but now I don't have permission to access almost everything on my external drive. A number of folders have the little red 'no access' sign on them and I can't rename or move anything. Looking at the info for these files, it appears that access rights were attached only to my old user account. Is there some way to reassign these files and folders to my new user account? Thanks.

  • Is there a compression method for compressing a group of very similar files, without archiving them?

    I want to compress a large nuber of files that have near identical headers, and also some data, however I do not wish to archive them, nor do I wish to zip them individually(because the copression ratio would be much higher if substitutions of similar blocks could be done using a single table). Does a compression method exist to do this already, or should I implement it myself. Note: Don't say "Disk space is cheap", because I may want to use this on an embedded system.

  • Converting PDF eBooks into a Kindle format

    Over the past couple of years I've amassed quite a collection of guides, tutorials and ebooks in PDF format. A lot of these are quite useful for work, especially PDF documentation, and rather than have to be at a computer every time I want to read how to do something in Sitecore or to read through a software testing ebook I'd like to do it on my brand-spanking-new Kindle. However, even though there is now a native PDF reader on the Kindle due to the nature of PDF's they are practically unreadable. The text doesn't wrap due to how PDF's are sized and so far after a bunch of Google searches I've yet to find a viable solution to get my PDF's converted into a readable Kindle format. Sometimes these books have code or pictures/tables in them, but most of the time they're text-heavy and to be honest I'd be surprised if there wasn't a free tool to handle the converting of PDF to one of the (seemingly many) Kindle formats. So, can anyone help me out with this? EDIT: I've tried Calibre, and have checked their forums to play with some of the advanced settings, yet the solutions available seem to be extremely poor, especially if the book you're attempting to read contains equations, code, or anything outside of plain text. I've also tried Amazon's conversion service, which wasn't much help with such documents. The best way I have found so far is to build the entire thing over again in ePub or RTF format and convert to MOBI from there. This works for text-heavy books with tables, but anything technical still isn't covered. Can anyone help with this?

  • Turn computer into DAS (Direct Attached Storage)

    Can we build a direct attached storage by taking a computer/server, adding an HBA, and installing some appropriate software? We would use Debian as a host OS for both the DAS and the server. If so, what software do we use? And do we simply need a HBA for the DAS and the Server? Or do we need more hardware? The goal is to use an older server that does not have enough room for drives but does have ECC memory, server processors, redundant power supplies, dual nics, etc. Then find any boxes, server or not, the key being having enough room for 8-12 drives, fans, etc. and turning them into a DAS; build two of these DAS's and have them connected to the server. Eventually we want to have two servers using DRBD and associated services like heartbeat and pace maker to create an HA setup for our server(s) but that will take a long time to configure since I have no experience with anything related to DRBD (yet) and have a learning curve I have to get past, not to mention the additional cost of more hardware (two servers vs one).

  • importing a mysqldump file does not import triggers due to some permission problems

    Hello, Whenever I try to import a mysqldump export on another server, the triggers are never created, and if I remember correctly, I get an error messages that super user permission is required. IF I remove the definer it usually works but if there is a way I would prefer not having to edit the sql file. When I just simply copy over the mdi, mdy and frm files everything works perfectly. How could I import a mysqldump file so that triggers are created as well?

    Like I know the transfer speeds are vastly different. But I don't understand is why they are faster. And why couldn't they have implemented USB 3.0 when they released 1.0? Like what technical breakthrough was required to get transfer speeds that fast? Was it cost? capacities of computer? like they couldn't read the data fast enough? Although USB is still well below hard drive transfer speeds engineering breakthrough? They found some new material which could transfer at a faster rate? Was this in the cable itself?   • /etc/exports file not read on boot

    I added some entries into my /etc/exports file. But when I boot my system, the file is not read. I check it by sudo exportfs — it returns nothing (also I can't mount the exported folders on other systems). Then I run sudo expotfs -a and then again sudo exportfs — and now all my exported folders are listed (and now I can mount the exported folders on other systems). I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2.6.28-11-generic kernel

  • Ubuntu karmic doesn't have the version file?

    I was following this tutorial: http://articles.slicehost.com/2010/4/23/ubuntu-karmic-setup-part-2 On my ubuntu karmic version (on ec2, ami from elastic) I don't see this file: cat /etc/lsb-release It just isn't there. How can I see the version of the O/S? And shouldn't that file be there? Some people have told me ubuntu isn't really used as a server, is that true or is the trend making it more viable?

    I have a huge folder (over 6GB) with multiple sub-folders that I want to copy onto an external hard drive, however I do not want it to copy any PDF, EXE or ZIP files across to save space. Is there any software that will help me achieve this? I have looked at TeraCopy but this doesn't seem to have any filter mechanism on it. I am using Windows XP (* sigh *). *edit: found the xcopy command, will this do it? Can anyone help me with the syntax?

    Sounds like easy task to some but such a difficult task for me to do... The main requirement for this task is to setup something in offices located on different locations, so (1st question) users are able to log on to the domain without VPN when they are in one of the offices. Additionally, (2nd question)how they can log on to the domain server when they are on the road like in a starbuck, what do they have to do to connect to domain after VPN connection are successful. also it's my understanding that, we can't share resource from computers on different network segments, (3rd question)what is the best solution to bridge/combine two network segments(two office in different locations) so computers of different location can see each other.   • Moving folders take long in windows 7

    What can i do to fix this? maybe drop permission properties? maybe not. I have a large folder with 100k files. I moved it into my archive folder and its taking forever to move. Why is that? I know on XP it takes <1sec but not on windows 7. I am sure its a permission thing, is there a way i can disable it and make it faster?

  • Accessing a shared folder in Windows Server 2008 R2.

    Hello all, seems my involvement with computers has grown and I've found my self in the need to access a shared folder on a server. I've read some documentation and managed to set up the folder as a share, for this I created a local group and for now just one local user that has access to the share, the folder is in the public user folder and it's permissions should be (and I believe they are) read/write. The problem is that I can't connect from a remote machine I mean I don't know how the way it should be accessed, the server has a public IP and we use it also as a host to our website I don't know if that affects it though, the folder will be used as the "keeper" for the QuickBooks company files and has the database server manager installed. I've tried setting up a VPN Connection to the but no success. The server has a domain name a "http://www.example.com" that redirects to our website, I am unsure if it could be accessed that way, also the share has a location displayed when I right-click properties Heres what I've tried Setting up a VPN Connection (Windows Vista and 7) Got to the point where I got asked for credential and entered the user I created (which is not an admin) but I got a "Connection fail error 800" I suppose this is because in the domain field I entered the servers workgroup. right-click add network connection (Windows 7) Went through the wizard until I reached the point of entering the location, tried many things, the name in the share's properties(\\SOMETHING\Share), the http://www.example.com , the IP address I'm quite unfamiliar with this, so I have my guesses: Since the group and user are local they do not have access to the folder. The firewall in the server is blocking my connection. Anyways, any help and guidence is truly appreciated.
