• performance monitoring tools for multi-tenant web application

  We have a need to monitor performance of our java web app. We are looking for some tolls which can help us with this task. The major difficulty is that we are SaaS provider with multi-tenant server architecture with hundreds of customers running on the same hardware. So far we tried commercial products like DynaTrace and Coradinat but unfortunately they don't get the job done so far. What we need is a simple report which would tell us if we had performance problems on each customer site in a specified period of time. Mostly it will be response time per customer but also we will need some more specifics based on the URLs. please let me know if someone had any experience with setting up such monitoring. Thanks!

• Why doesn't GCC produce a warning when assigning a signed literal to an unsigned type?

  Several questions on this website reveal pitfalls when mixing signed and unsigned types and most compilers seem to do a good job about generating warnings of this type. However, GCC doesn't seem to care when assigning a signed constant to an unsigned type! Consider the following program: /* foo.c */ #include <stdio.h> int main(void) { unsigned int x=20, y=-30; if (x > y) { printf("%d > %d\n", x, y); } else { printf("%d <= %d\n", x, y); } return 0; } Compilation with GCC 4.2.1 as below produces no output on the console: gcc -Werror -Wall -Wextra -pedantic foo.c -o foo The resulting executable generates the following output: $ ./foo 20 <= -30 Is there some reason that GCC doesn't generate any warning or error message when assigning the signed value -30 to the unsigned integer variable y?

  Passing messages around with actors is great. But I would like to have even easier code. Examples (Pseudo-code) val splicedList:List[List[Int]]=biglist.partition(100) val sum:Int=ActorPool.numberOfActors(5).getAllResults(splicedList,foldLeft(_+_)) where spliceIntoParts turns one big list into 100 small lists the numberofactors part, creates a pool which uses 5 actors and receives new jobs after a job is finished and getallresults uses a method on a list. all this done with messages passing in the background. where maybe getFirstResult, calculates the first result, and stops all other threads (like cracking a password)

• Git history cleanup doesn't seem to have an effect

  Hi, i ran the following 2 commands to clean up .pbxuser and .mode1v3 files from my git repository, but afterwards when i e.g. fire up gitx i can still see them in the history. git filter-branch --tree-filter "git rm -rf --cached --ignore-unmatch *.pbxuser" HEAD rm -rf .git/refs/original/ && git reflog expire --all && git gc --aggressive --prune What did i misunderstand here? The commands seem to do the job but why is gitx still viewing the diffs in its history? Regards, Erik

  Naming things well is arguably Job 1 for professional programmers. Yet we have all suffered from some bad naming choices from time to time. So just to vent a little, what are some doozies that you may have run across? Just to get things started: One of our original developers wasn't sure what to call a secondary key - on what turned out to be a primary table for this app - so he called it: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs. Unfortunately this system generates entity mappings from the XML, and attributes defined there result in classes, methods, and constants that are referenced through-out the app. To this day it is very hard to find a source file that does not reference this, er, thing! • Moving ordered elements and adding arbitrary text in Deliverance

  Using the following XPath derived rule, I am able to select a list of events from a Plone site (similar to Plone Community events) and display them in my Deliverance themed site: <replace content="//*[@id='parent-fieldname-title' or @class='explain' or @id='parent-fieldname-location' or @id='parent-fieldname-text']" theme="#center-content-to-replace-one" /> However, two separate, but related, problems now rear their heads. I can't work out how to: Re-order elements within the replaced theme, such as moving images originally held within #parent-fieldname-text to before #parent-fieldname-title Put arbitrary text before elements. Such as 'Page Title:' before #parent-fieldname-title I could do both if I was just dealing with one record, as place holders(1) or text before place holders(2) could be specified in the template - but I can't see a away for that template behaviour to repeat across multiple items in one page. (if that is indeed the solution) Is this a job for pyQuery?

• How can I transition from a front-end career to back-end career?

  Hello, In 2004, I received my B.S. in Computer Science using mostly Java for programming. Since then, I have been hired for purely front-end positions in large companies through recruiters, doing primarily HTML/CSS, Javascript/jQuery, and OOP Actionscript 3. While I definitely have respect for the front-end, and have learned much, I feel very unfulfilled and would love to move into back-end for the more complex programming I was doing in school. My target platform of choice is ASP.Net 3.5 (C#). With a resume that has absolutely no .Net or back-end experience, how can I transition into a junior back-end job? I am currently freelancing a .Net e-commerce site, and plan to build a portfolio showcasing some apps (e-commerce mvc, blog, etc), while learning the technology. Is having a Bachelors in CS enough or should I look into getting .Net certified? Is showing course-work still relevant to an employer even though it was from 6 years ago? Thank you

  hi folks, I asked a question a few days ago about how to customise the calendar extender of the ajaxcontroltoolkit library and got a response saying I should ditch the control kit for jQuery. I have to say I've heard jQuery being mentioned quite a bit and more importantly I've seen it as a requirement for an increasing number of web development job vacancies. I do like the ajaxcontroltoolkit with its simplicity and integration with Visual Studio. Does anyone have an opinion on the two of these? We need reliable messaging between our clients and the server, preferably over HTTP protocol. Besides the multiplayer functionality, we’ll also need a content delivery service. • Overriding PEAR error handler

  Hi everyone, I'm currently working on an application that requires lots of external libraries. My job right now is set a unique error handler that will manage every error. So far, I found 7 different types of PEAR errors: PEAR_ERROR_RETURN: PEAR_ERROR_EXCEPTION: PEAR_ERROR_CALLBACK: PEAR_ERROR_EXCEPTION: PEAR_ERROR_PRINT: PEAR_ERROR_TRIGGER: PEAR_ERROR_DIE: I want to handle only the serious error (like the native E*_ERROR). The only problem is I have absolutely no idea about PEAR error criticity ! Those names are more related to the way of handling them than to their seriousness... Is there a real documentation about it ? I guess a better solution would consist in using their pushErrorHandling, but I just don't understand how to use it... Multiple instances of the service may be running at the same time, so it is important that they do not step on each other. I realize that an SFTP folder does not make an ideal queue, but that's what I have to work with. • XSD traversal in VIM

  I use VIM as my text editor and I edit a lot of XML and WSDL files. WSDL files have an XSD section. Is there some VIM plugin I can use to traverse the XSD types? i.e., if I have the following line and the caret is where the '|' sign is: <xsd:element minOccurs="0" name="FooName" type="Magic|FooType"/> and I press Ctrl+Alt+Foo (or some other magic combo) it will get me to the definition of MagicFooType, i.e.: <xsd:complexType name="MagicFooType"> I couldn't find how to use ctags for this and all the other plugins that I could find are for imperative languages (i.e. Java). Is there some plugin/script to do the job?

  I am working on windows. I am building a twitter application which periodically checks for new tweets as well as allows users to update their status. I have written separate PHP files for reading (reader.php) and writing tweets (writer.php). The only problem is how do I periodically read the tweets. There are a few ways which I can think of - 1) Use a time-based job scheduler (like Cron) to periodically run the reader.php. How do I do this? 2) Use multithreading to run both reader and writer.php and use a timer function in reader.php Suggestions?

• Why does Perl's Crypt::SSLeay timeout on Intel Mac OS X machines?

  A have a Perl cron job that recently started having its HTTPS connections start failing with an error of "500 SSL read timeout". I've tracked that the error is being thrown as part of an alarm in Crypt::SSLeay, but I don't know if this is simply something taking too long to respond. So far, I've adjusted the timeout from the default 30 seconds to 10 minutes and it still times out. I've moved the script to other machines, and those on Intel Mac OS X systems all time out, while those under Linux, or on PPC Mac OS X systems run fine, so I don't think it's changes on the network or remote server. When the process started having problems does not coincide with any software updates or reboots on the machine, and I've contacted the server I'm connecting to, and everyone claims that they haven't changed anything. Does anyone have recommendations on trying to debug HTTPS, or have you ever seen this behavior and give recommendations on something I might've overlooked at that could've caused this problem?

So far I have looked at Umbraco, which looks good but the help is poor and the getting started video section is empty, and dotnetnuke, which again looks good but I get the impression its aimed at non developers, plus to has much more than I need and want. In my last job I created a basic custom CMS system that worked by simply adding values into the database, the application called the text from there. it worked fine but I don’t have the source code. what I'm after is a simple CMS system that really just controls text and images, I dont need all the fancy stuff thats in umbraco and dotnetnuke, all the design and CSS i can do myself. also as im working with MVC (which is awesome, and such a breath of fresh air compared to the web forms/telerik crap I have to put up with at work) it needs to be compatible. I've recently finished a web app with fully handwritten raw php code and it's absolutely hard to be done again for another project. even though I have the recent project code snippets to be used again, but due to their non-structural arrangement (not object oriented), i have no passion to use 'em again. I have no experience with common frameworks like ZF, CakePhp, CodeIgniter, so I think to get my hands on a multipurpose OO library for my web app and the framework learning will be the next step! any suggestion?   It has been suggested on Amazon docs http://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ among other places, that you can backup your dynamodb tables using Elastic Map Reduce, I have a general understanding of how this could work but I couldn't find any guides or tutorials on this, So my question is how can I automate dynamodb backups (using EMR)? So far, I think I need to create a "streaming" job with a map function that reads the data from dynamodb and a reduce that writes it to S3 and I believe these could be written in Python (or java or a few other languages). Any comments, clarifications, code samples, corrections are appreciated.

  hi, i need to send a request to a website when a user submits their url, i tried using curl but it uses server ip which i dont want i have seen a website that is doing a similar job by using applet, users need to open a popup which contains the applet after they leave it open allow it to run it uses a port and then uses the localhost ip like so 127.0.0.1:64653 to send request and basicly curl by the user ip. i decompiled the applet the website was using and they were using java.net.ServerSocket and some other java code but i do not know anything about java. I would to know how this can be done.

  I need to write a temporary Web-based graphical front-end for a custom server system. In this case performance and scalability aren't issues, since at most 10 people may check the system simultaneously. Also it should be PHP or Python (server) & JavaScript (client) (can't use Flex or Silverlight for very specific non-programming related issues). So I know I could use YUI or jQuery, but was wondering if there is something even more high-level that would say allow me to write such a little project within a few hours of work, and get done with it. Basically I want to be as lazy as possible (this is throw-away code anyways) and get the job done in as little time as possible. Any suggestions?

I'm new to Wcf ,but what looks me strange is that ,the same application was working in my job environment ,but not on my home PC .... I have same VS2008,NET3.5 with service pack 1
