• Multiple problems using BOINC in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Berkeley's BOINC software in Windows and I loved it, however I'm having the following problems using it in Ubuntu 12.04: 1) The software doesn't appear in the systray, only in the Unity dock (left side) 2) I can minimize BOINC to the dock but when I open and close other program it maximizes again, wich is very annoying 3) The software can't be closed, it only minimizes to the Unity dock, and nothing happens using right click and close either 4) The software doesn't start at startup or as a startup application 5) It doesn't have a screensaver like in Windows I know it's a lot a problems, but I hope they can be fixed, because I love to use this software, and knowing it's open-software it would be a shame it didn't run on Ubuntu like it should.

• Canon MG6100 series USB printer receives job but doesn't physically print

  Printer MP6150 driver installed itself upon plugging in the printer. Printer is recognized (lsusb shows it) but does not mount. If the printer is recognized, the driver must be working (or?), but something is blocking the system from mounting the printer. • Will using two different tracking codes affect my SERP

  Hello everyone and thanks for your time! I am now facing a problem after a site migration. New site is basically an improved version of old site, with the same content and some extras. After pointing the domain name to the new site, the old site was still online for a while but didn't get any traffic. The new site has its own tracking code. So, old tracking code has age (something like 7 years) but no visitors for a month, but new tracking code is a month old with an acceptable traffic. How to you think google will react if I add old tracking code to new site? Thanks by advance!

• Exalogic 2.0.1 Tea Break Snippets - Creating and using Distribution Groups

  By default running your Exalogic in a Virtual provides you with, what to Cloud Users, is a single large resource and they can just create vServers and not care about how they are laid down on the the underlying infrastructure. All the Cloud Users will know is that they can create vServers. For example if we have a Quarter Rack (8 Nodes) and our Cloud User creates 8 vServers those 8 vServers may run on 8 distinct nodes or may all run on the same node. Although in many cases we, as Cloud Users, may not be to worried how the Virtualisation Algorithm decides where to place our vServers there are cases where it is extremely important that vServers run on distinct physical compute nodes. For example if we have a Weblogic Cluster we will want the Servers with in the cluster to run on distinct physical node to cover for the situation where one physical node is lost. To achieve this the Exalogic Virtualised implementation provides Distribution Groups that define and anti-aliasing policy that the underlying Virtualisation Algorithm will take into account when placing vServers. It should be noted that Distribution Groups must be created before you create vServers because a vServer can only be added to a Distribution Group at creation time. Creating A Distribution Group To create a Distribution Groups we will first need to select the Account in which we want the Distribution Group to be created. Once we have selected the account we will see the Interface update and Account specific Actions will be displayed within the Action Panes. From the Action pane (or Right-Click on the Account) select the "Create Distribution Group" action. This will initiate the create wizard as follows. Distribution Group Details Within the first Step of the Wizard we can specify the name of the distribution group and this should be unique. In addition we can provide a detailed description of the group. Distribution Group Configuration The second step of the configuration wizard allows you to specify the number of elements that are required within this group and will specify a maximum of the number of nodes within you Exalogic. At this point it is always better to specify a group with spare capacity allowing for future expansion. As vServers are added to group the available slots decrease. Summary Finally the last step of the wizard display a summary of the information entered.

• Why is it taking so long to open the Ubuntu Help Center?

  When I click on the Help Center Icon in the 'System' menu, it takes more than a minute to launch the program. More than a minute, for a text only program seeming like a website! All my other programs work fine, and I saw this problem also on other computers. Is there a reason for this? Will it be fixed? I think it is an important issue for beginners. • What can I do to prevent my user folder from being tampered with by malicious software?

  Let's assume some things: Back-ups do run every X minutes, yet the things I save should be permanent. There's a firewall and virus scanner in place, yet there happens to be a zero day attack on me. I am using Windows. (Although feel free to append Linux / OS X parts to your answer) Here is the problem Any software can change anything inside my user folder. Tampering with the files could cost me my life, whether it's accessing / modifying or wiping them. So, what I want to ask is: Is there a permission-based way to disallow programs from accessing my files in any way by default? Extending on the previous question, can I ensure certain programs can only access certain folders? Are there other less obtrusive ways than using Comodo? Or can I make Comodo less obtrusive? For example, the solution should be proof against (DO NOT RUN): del /F /S /Q %USERPROFILE%

• Set-and-forget Windows backup software with NAS-support?

  I am looking for set-and-forget backup software for Windows (Vista & 7, and if possible XP/2003). The idea is that it runs in the background on the clients, and does its thing towards a network-share. In case the HDD of one of these clients spontaneously combusts, all I want to have to do is: replace the drive, insert a USB-stick, boot from it, and restore the machine. It should support drives which use [ICH]-RAID. What are my options here? It looks like WHS meets all the requirements, but I am curious about my other options here.

  I know that I can create a simple little Qt based application that adds and read png metadata, using the QImage.setText(...) and QImage.text(...). That metadata can then be read with a linux command called pngmeta. But what other image software can I use to read out the png metadata? Please note that I'm seeking image programs for the common platforms, so please specify if your application is for Windows or Linux. • How to force WinXP to ask for password before software installation/uninstall?

  I really like some of the linux security measures it uses. So what i'd like to do is have WinXP Pro SP3 ask for my user password everytime i try to install/remove software. I know I can't make windows be as secure as linux, but i'd love to adopt some of the great ideas and measures used, as possible, to make windows more secure. Any suggestions? P.S. Are there other people out there, who try to make their windows feel more linux like? Just curious.

• How does the "Steam" platform work? Is it DRM? Can I trust "Steam"-powered software? [closed]

  So – I just bought the new game Supreme Commander 2. This question is not about the game, but about the online software installation platform that it seems to require. I haven't bought a game in a long time, and I'm puzzled: Apparently, SC2 is a "Steam"-powered game. When I went to install the game, it asked me to either create a new Steam account, or log in with an existing account. I clicked "Cancel" because I don't plan to play online and I don't want anything unnecessary installed on my computer, since I only plan to play single player! However, after clicking "Cancel", the installer asked for my confirmation that I indeed wanted to cancel installation of the game! I thought I was just canceling the "online" portions! So I really want to know: How do "Steam" powered games work? Is this essentially a form of DRM (Digital Rights Management)? Can I trust this software platform? Has anybody done any independent verification on how this platform works? (I'm very leery of any DRM after the Sony BMG CD copy protection scandal. Thank goodness for Mark Russinovich.) Does the "Steam" platform install anything particularly nasty or unwanted on my computer? High-rep users: Please vote to reopen this question. It is not about the game, but about the software update platform / updater / DRM. Imagine if the software in question were a productivity application. The issues remain the same.

• Open-source training class/room/instructor resource management software?

Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point. • Are mobo raid controllers based on Intel ICH10R southbridge still considered software Raid?

  So do you still need specific software/drivers (intel matrix?) installed to manage the raid controller, setup the array. If the raid chipset is on-board the motherboard and it uses the CPU, and say I am using a Core 2 Quad Q9550, would a hardware based card still out perform the motherboard chipset? This is for a home workstation and I could spend $300 on a areca ARC-1210 PCI-Express x8 SATA II but I want to be able to justify the money for the raid card. • Does it actually matter whether you have open applications when installing new software?

  It seems the norm these days is for installers/setup programs to request that you close all open applications before initiating the install process for a piece of new software. I used to obediently follow these directions without fail, even though it could sometimes be frustrating having to close open documents and stop working on things just to get a new, seemingly unrelated application installed. Then at some point I simply stopped bothering. Nowadays if I have a lot of stuff going on I might even run multiple installers at the same time; I can't even recall a time it has ever posed a problem. Why do setup programs even make this request in the first place, then, when it appears to be unnecessary? Is this just to simplify troubleshooting for companies' support people? Has anyone else ever run into problems as a result of trying to install an app while other apps were open?

• What's the best external hard drive configuration for a software developer laptop?

  I've got a Dell laptop that I use as a software developer box at work and find that the drive is usually the bottleneck. I'd like to hook up two 10k RPM drives that are striped for performance. I've looked for drive cases with RAID but there don't seem to be very many choices and I'm worried about compatibility with the drives (preferably SATA 2). Also I don't have a SATA connection on my machine so it'll have to USB 2.0 for now. Am I headed down the right path or am I missing a much simpler configuration?

• How do I get rid of Adobe Download Akamai software on a Mac?

  I installed Adobe's Download Manager Software when I was downloading a CS4 trial. It was called Akamai. I can not seem to get rid of this pesky thing. I have Little Snitch installed so I was annoyed that it showed that this app would phone home for updates every login. I felt this was an unnecessary process I wanted rid of. I've uninstalled it using App Cleaner. Now on login the Akamai app does not produce any Little Snitch prompts. "SoftwareUpdateCheck" does. SoftwareUpdateCheck wants to connect to a950.gi3.akamai.net on TCP 80. SoftwareUpdateCheck is /System/Library/CoreServices/SoftwareUpdate.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck. • What virtual machine software for fail-over and snapshots?

  We're looking to virtualize a few machines with the hope that we can: a) Take "snapshots" of a machine to use as backups b) Implement a system where if the software/hardware fails, we can quickly and easily load up an recent snapshot on new hardware and replace the failed machine with a new one. • Hosting discussion forums on Windows 2008 Server / IIS, what software to use?

  A plan to look into hosting discussion forums related to our product, on our own servers, has arisen, and I can't seem to find any pure .NET or Windows-based discussion forums. Since we're a pure Windows-based company, installing something that requires MySQL or Linux is going to require administration knowledge we don't currently have. What are our options? Every site I find that shows how to set up discussion forums on IIS involves just taking one of the many LAMP-based ones and tweaking IIS to run PHP or similar to run it. Isn't there a .NET-based discussion forum software? Free or not doesn't matter at this stage, right now we're just looking for options.

• Is Dell's server software bundle necessary? (Poweredge 2950 in my case)

  Hi all, Dell includes a fair amount of software with its servers, but I'm having a hard time determining from the documentation what each of them does, and whether or not I should install it. Dell's support site (unless I'm doing it wrong) seems fairly opaque to me and its offerings fairly unstandardized in terms of their usage, so if possible I'd like to stray away from them. Specifically, I'm curious if any of the features offered are duplicated in something like Microsoft System Center. For additional background information, I'm working with a Poweredge 2950 that was just rebuilt with an expanded raid-6, but initially I just installed Server 2008 R2 directly instead of using the Build and Update utility. There's nothing of use on it at the moment so I'm totally open to wiping it again.

• Palm software that can turn the Palm IR keyboard into a Bluetooth keyboard for PC?

  I had this kooky idea this morning. I love my foldout palm keyboard, but it only speaks IR to my Palm Treo. But it also has a Bluetooth radio so I thought wouldn't it be just keen to have a program that runs on the Treo that reads from the IR the keyboard and exposes it as a Bluetooth keyboard for a PC. I realize I'm way late to the game because there's so little information about the Palm anymore. I was thinking of writing this software if it wasn't too big of a deal, but I figured I'd see if anybody knew of such a project already in existence or something like it that I could piggyback off of. Not even sure if I can get the Palm OS Developers' kit anymore....

• Presentation software requires admin rights to install - any way to remove this requirement?

  I have some wireless presentation software which I use in a meeting room in order to allow end users to hold presentations here and wirelessly have their laptop screens showing on the TV on the wall. Unfortunately the .exe file requires admin rights to install therefore requiring that either the user requests temporary admin rights beforehand, I install it using my admin account or that we use a VGA/HDMI cable. Is there a way to remove the admin right requirement from a .exe or a .msi file so that it can be installed freely by any user? We are using XP for now but will be moving to 7 soon. Thanks James

• Can I fully disable my PCIe Video/Graphics Card per BIOS/Software?

  Because of a quite noisy fan of my HD6700 I was wondering, if I could fully disable my video card through BIOS or even some Software/Windows. Switching to Intel I7 2600 internal video helped already with the noise, but it would be great to have the HD6700 only build in, but not activated/powered. So that the fan could stay compleatly off. Of course, I could just remove the video card, but I would like to avoid that. Is there any way? My Mainboard is an ASUS P8H67-M Pro, with Intel I7 2600 and ATI HD6500

• Is there a software package that safely allows SSH via web on simple web host?

  I want to be able to use a secured web page on my shared web host to make SSH connections out to any destination. A shared web host is cheap and easy to maintain, and usually allows ssh to the web server. There are times I'd like to ssh into my web server, but don't have direct ssh connectivity. I'm aware of consoleFISH, Ajaxterm, and Anyterm. The problem is consoleFISH is a man-in-the-middle by design, and Ajaxterm/Anyterm require running a daemon process on the hosting server. Web hosts can usually support cron jobs, but not continuously running daemon processes. Additional Apache modules are usually out, too, as they require reconfiguration of the server and affects all other customers. Are there any software packages out there I can run on my shared web hosting account that provide a true ssh experience with these limitations?
