• Suspected network performance issue on VirtualBox Ubuntu guest on Win7 host

  I set up Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox on the Win7 machine I was allocated on my new project. I am running Java, Eclipse, Tomcat to develop a large data-intensive application and I noticed that this application runs at half the speed of my colleague's identical machine, where he runs it all under Windows. I think I have narrowed down the performance issue to the network, after comparing and equalising all the Java VM settings with my colleague. Is there a ping test I can do or some other network diagnostic test to flag up any problems? To give some background, the network performance is confusing. Running a network speed test to my colleague's machine with iperf shows speeds of 6 Mb/s from my Ubuntu guest, and 90 Mb/s from the win7 host. Large downloads, e.g. the Java SDK, come down at about 1.2 MB/s on both the guest and the host. Pings are sub-1ms on the host, but 1.5ms on the guest. I also did a broadband speed test, and got 10Mb/s download speed on both, but the host has an upload speed of 10Mb/s but the guest only uploads at 3Mb/s. I've been trying to diagnose any MTU problems with ping -M do to identify any kind of packet fragmentation problem but it's progressing very slow because I don't have much experience in this area. From what I read on other people's networking issues with VB and Linux guests on Win7 hosts, I should be able to get the speed on the guest up to the same level as the host. I installed a fresh VM with Ubuntu again to see if I'd foobar'd it somehow, but I'm getting the same readings with iperf on the virgin installation. • Staggering java linux process startup to prevent OOM

  I am running a number of java processes on a single Linux machine. From a memory and computing standpoint, everything is fine when things are static. However, periodically we use a configuration management package up upgrade the jar or war files, and restart the java process. The problem is, that is restarts them all relatively quickly, and so we get 10 or so java VMs restarting all at the same time (we use daemontools for the service stops/starts), which wreaks havoc on the machine, in terms of OOMs or just really slow. This is because it's spawning the JVM 10x at the same time. Other than trying to stagger the startups, is there a smarter way of handling this? Maybe a sysctl tuning performance parameters, or a JVM parameter?

  I had git working before on /var/html/projectfolder and realized it was a security risk so I made a new folder /projects from the root folder and tried to replicate what I did and now it doesnt work. • Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

• Monitoring User Login time

  Hi, i have recently been given the task of trying to work out why the login time (not machine boot time) for some of our users seems slow. The vast majority of clients (95%) are running on XP sp3, Windows 2003 domain controlers. Most users have the same model of machine. I would like to be able to see how long each of the polices are taking to load (if possable split user and computer) and any other info that might help (services starting etc) I changed the userenvdebuglevel reg option to generate the userenv.log file but it did'nt contain very much info Thanks Luke

  On my Debian Linux machine Ctrl+Alt+F1 is bound to a virtual terminal. I can see the corresponding entry by running xmodmap -pke keycode 67 = F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 F1 XF86_Switch_VT_1 Per this thread, which I might add is consistent with what I've read elsewhere, the columns on the right hand side of = correspond to key, Shift+key, AltGr+key and Shift+AltGr+key. Given that, I don't understand how the keycode mapping for F1 (above) works for Ctrl+Alt+F1. It seems it should really be either Shift+F1 or Shift+AltGr+F1? • Is LSB's init script function "start_daemon" really used for real daemons or should I stick to start-stop-daemon?

  In the context of init scripts, according to the LSB specification, "Each conforming init script shall execute the commands in the file /lib/lsb/init-function", which then defines a couple of functions to be used when using daemons. One of those functions is start_daemon, which obviously "runs the specified program as a daemon" while checking if the daemon is already running. I'm in the process of daemonizing a service app of mine, and I'm looking at how other daemons are run to try to "fit in". In the process of looking how it's done elsewhere, I noticed that not a single daemon on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine uses start_daemon. They all call start-stop-daemon directly. Same goes for my Fedora 14 machine. Should I try to play nice and be the first one to use start_daemon, or is there really no point and start-stop-daemon is the way to go since everybody is already using that? Why is there no daemons using LSB's functions?

• Changed array composition, mdadm --detail still shows the old array size

  I have a machine with 8 disks. I installed it with my hoster's install automation (it's OVH, I don't have physical access to it). The machine installed correctly, but it made an array that I wanted to change. It created a raid5 array across 5/8 disks and I've changed it to raid10 across 8 disks. I've done this by first --stopping the old array and then --creating the new array. It warned me that a previous array was there, but I chose to continue. So it created the array, spent 10ish hours syncing it and now that it's ready I get this strange behavior: When I fdisk p on it, I see the correct size. But when I mdadm --detail it I see the old array's size even tho I get the new composition and level. When I try to pvcreate on it, i get the old size again for some reason. Did I have to do something else? Did I miss something?

• Mount "Macrium Reflect" on a partition, boot from there?

  Can Macrium's Reflect recovery CD be mounted/used with GRUB ? If the cd can be 'put' (loaded/mounted/...) in a partition, then the only disc needed would be the actual recovery disc, which could be on an external hard drive, or even on the same machine in another partition, thus allowing on to recover using only what's on the machine itself. I have WXPpro and Xubuntu8.04 double mounted, really happy with them together, use each right now to fix problems with the other when they come up. Also have a partition for the Reflect CD, but I just can't get it to load from Grub, which would be great... Thanks for any thoughts, probably someone has already done this I know !

  Hi Folks, I've started a new job at a house where they've got an amazingly unruly patchwork of Linux, xBSD, and OpenSolaris boxes. Every box has its own user auth using local /etc/passwd, etc. Users/Groups have differing uids/gids on each machine, and each machine has its own /home/ tree. (no central NAS /homes) My job is get get everything into an LDAP directory and use that for login auth. How do I get LDAP to deal with the differing uids/gids? Thanks.

• Can't boot into XP after setting up dual boot with Win 7 vhd.

  I set up a dual boot for win 7 from vhd on 2 xp machines. One of them everything went fine, and I get the option to choose the os when I turn the machine on. The other was slightly different in that rather than seeing the current OS disk (the one with XP on) as the c:\ when I was setting up windows 7 vhd during install it saw the disk as d:. I didn't think anything of it and went ahead and created a vhd on the d: drive. Now when I turn this machine on, it boots straight to win7 and I never get the option to choose xp. When I look at the boot option in msconfig, I only see Windows 7. How can I go about adding the old XP drive as a boot option at startup again? Edit: Strangely when I rebooted this time (perhaps the first time since I removed the install DVD) it boots to XP. I suppose I'll just have to reinstall windows 7 again in a new vhd...

• Understanding ESXi and Memory Usage

  Hi, I am currently testing VMWare ESXi on a test machine. My host machine has 4gigs of ram. I have three guests and each is assigned a memory limit of 1 GB (and only 512 MB reserved). The host summary screen shows a memory capacity of 4082.55 MB and a usage of 2828 MB with two guests running. This seems to make sense, two gigs for each VM plus an overhead for the host. 800MB seems high but that is still reasonable. But on the Resource Allocation Screen I see a memory capacity of 2356 MB and an available capacity of 596 MB. Under the configuration tab, memory link I see a physical total of 4082.5 MB, System of 531.5 MB and VM of 3551.0 MB. I have only allocated my VMs for a gig each, and with two VMs running they are taking up almost two times the amount of ram allocated. Why is this, and why does the Resource Allocation screen short change me so much?

• Raid recovery in gigabyte GA-8I945 Pro

  This was a working machine until a few days ago. And now it won't boot into the OS, during startup if makes clicking sounds (I think from one of the drives). Installed OS: Windows 2003 Web edition Hardware: Gigabyte GA-8I945P Pro , 2*160G Sata in RAID1 configuration , 2 Volumes – 25G and the rest. When I installed windows on it, during setup, I pressed F6 and used ICH7DH drivers of RAID. The manual for the MOBO says: Step 1: After the POST memory test begins and before the operating system boot begins, look for a message which says "Press to enter Configuration utility" (Figure 4). Press CTRL+ I to enter the RAID BIOS setup utility. But the machine never shows this message. BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI Mode is set to RAID. Any ideas or pointers on what I can do to recover my data? • Windows 7 RC sleep on Thinkpad R51?

  I have an old Thinkpad R51 and Windows 7 just doesn't give me a Sleep option. I suspect it's because it's running the default VGA driver. The machine has an Intel 855 GME graphics adapter but there doesn't seem to be a WDDM driver available publicly. Lenovo's driver download page just says that drivers for Vista are bundled with the OS. Apparently, they aren't bundled with Windows 7 as it always defaults to a generic VGA driver. Is there a reliable way to get Sleep to work on this machine?

• Access VirtualBox-ed server from behind the router

  I'm having the following configuration: Windows 7 hosting VirtualBox and it's guest: Ubuntu The machine (physical) which runs VirtualBox is behind the router and has the address of 192.168.0.110 VirtualBox runs the Bridged network, and the IP of VirtualBox-ed Ubuntu (eth0) is 192.168.0.200 Host (Win7) is running HTTP service on port 80, while guest (Ubuntu) is running it's service on port 9000 I can access both services from inside the network by typing the ip_address:port and this works fine. Both ports are forwarded on the router to their's respective IPs: 80 -> 192.168.0.110:80 9000 -> 192.168.0.200:9000 Unfortunately, accessing the router's external IP doesn't work as expected. While external_ip:80 works correctly, external_ip:9000 - doesn't I believe the problem is VBox - related, since the same network is running also other physical machine with Ubuntu and http service on 8000 and this one is forwarded correctly.

  Hi I want to use paltalk, which is a kind of chat software, but the ports that this applications uses are closed in my country. What I need to do is to use a proxy server. Unfortunately the software itself does not provide a proxy setting. I though it would be possible to run paltalk on an O.S. installed on a virtual machine (say virtualbox) and configure the network setting of virtual machine to direct all its traffic through a proxy on host Operating system, but I could not find a way to do so neither. can anyone please help me?

  Hello! I have a domain, that is registered at a service provider but my site (wordpress blog) is hosted in a shared account with a friend in another other host service. I want to become seperate from this friend because I'm tired of boring him with my blog downtimes. Now, my problem is that I signed up to Amazon EC2 service and I created a instance (a virtual machine) to host my wordpress blog and now I'd like to redirect mydomain.com to this instance at Amazon EC2 and I don't know how to proceed in order to achieve that. The instance at Amazon EC2 is up and running (it's a 64bit linux machine) but I couldn't redirect mydomain.com to this instance at my host service webpanel. Could someone help me please???

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student?

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • X11 forwarding from one server to other

  I have a setup where I need to forward X11 from my local machine (laptop) to a Virtual machine. The server hosting this VM cannot be reached directly from my laptop. I need to first login to a gateway and from this gateway, I can access the VM. How can I forward X11 from my laptop to this VM? I have tried following but these do not work: [laptop # ] ssh -X [gateway] [gateway # ] ssh -X [VM] [laptop # ] ssh -tX [gateway] ssh -X [VM] I could forward X11 only till the gateway. (DISPLAY variable gets set on gateway)

• Aventail VPN connection doesn't work

  I installed the Aventail VPN client on both the Mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get this page: It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless.

• Should I, and how do I incorporate microdata into my asp.net website with 47 pages?

  I have an asp.net (vb) with 47 pages. The problem is that it's in 10 different languages, although 98% just use English. I have 5 master pages. I've read Google Webmaster Tools, but I'm still confounded. I'm reading about how microdata is the way to go. Does this mean I should put itemtype and itemprop span and div tags in my master pages, or should I do all of my 47 pages (.resx resource files) separately? The main key phrase I want throughout search results is "machine vision". For instance, the first couple sentences on my "about.aspx" page are: <span itemprop="name">USS Vision Inc.</span> (USS) is a privately-owned company with headquarters in <span itemprop="locality">Detroit, Michigan, USA</span>. • Network print to brother MFC-7420

  I am trying to pint to a Brother MFC-7420 from my ubuntu 10.04 machine. The brother is attached to a windows XP machine and is shared. This is what I have tried: System-Administration-Printing, Add, Expand Network Printer, Windows Printer via SAMBA, Browse (I can find the printer no problems here), Foward, Choose Driver Dialog, Brother, My printer is not in this list So the next thing I tried was to download the printer driver from here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html The driver installed fine but my printer still does not appear in the list. I also tried installing the cups wrapper but that gave the following error. Restarting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd [ OK ] cp: cannot stat `/usr/share/cups/model/MFC7420.ppd': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing cupswrappermfc7420 (--install): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: cupswrappermfc7420 I tried connecting the printer directly but even though I have installed the driver, when I go to printers and click on the printer (it shows up fine as a USB printer) then it say searching for drivers and then gives me a list, this is the same list as before which doesn't have my printer. It really shouldn't be this hard. on window you don't have to installing anything it just works and the same is true for my brothers Mac. How do I print to my printer?

• Why has my Mac been running fsck_hfs for two days now?

  I first noticed that fsck_hfs was running, taking up 50-75% of a CPU, yesterday. It continues to run today. ps shows that it is doing /sbin/fsck_hfs -f -n -x -E /dev/disk3. Only problem: I don’t think I have a /dev/disk3. Why is it running? Will it ever finish? Can I kill it? What is /dev/disk3? Could it be my Time Machine volume, which is not mounted at the moment? System Info: MacBook Pro (2008). It has two disks installed—the internal disk (/dev/disk1) and a PC Card SSD (/dev/disk0, surprisingly). It connects to a remote Time Machine volume attached to an Airport Extreme base station.
