    Friends-- Cannot connect reliably to ethernet nor at all to Internet: Symptoms: About 2 weeks ago did an upgrade. Have not been able to connect to ethernet nor Internet. Today, for example, boot up this System76 laptop and there was no network connection.   • Integrated webcam in lenovo t410 not working with 12.04

    I have a Lenovo T410 with an inbuilt webcam and I haven't been able to get the webcam working. I tried skype, cheese, both just give me a black window. The microphone works fine with skype, by the way. Can anyone provide any clues please? The webcam is enabled in the bios, but there is no light indicating the webcam is on (not sure if there should be, though). I tried this on Kubuntu 11.10 and have upgraded to 12.04 with the same results. The Fn-F6 keyboard combination doens't seem to do anything either. EDIT: I got the webcam replaced, it looks like it was a hardware problem, because it works fine now.     One of the ExpressKeys on my Wacom Bamboo Capture graphics tablet is mapped to Bamboo Preferences, so that I can quickly access the tablet settings and view the battery level (I have the Wireless Accessory Kit installed). However, when I connect the tablet to the computer, in wired or wireless mode, and attempt to open Bamboo Preferences, the Wacom consumer tablet driver service may crash, most often when I try to do so after resuming the computer from sleep. There is usually no direct indication of the crash (although I once did get Tablet Service for consumer driver stopped working and was closed), only that the cursor shows that the system is busy for a split second. When this happens, the pen no longer tracks on the screen when in proximity of the tablet (even though it is detected by the tablet itself); however, touch continues to function correctly. To recover from this condition, I need to restart the tablet driver services. I got tired of having to go through Task Manager to restart the service every time this happens, so I ended up writing the following command script, with a shortcut on the desktop for running it with elevated privileges: net stop TabletServicePen net start TabletServicePen net stop TouchServicePen net start TouchServicePen Is there something I can do to prevent these crashes from happening in the first place, or do I have have to deal with this issue until the driver is updated?     Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life? I am normally on stackoverflow.com, please excuse me if this question isn't appropriate here. I am working on a web project. We send out emails. I work locally on a linux box. When coding I use my local mailboxes to check what's been sent. Emails sent out to valid email addresses are not arriving at my official mailbox; they might be stopped by the provider's mail servers (gmail, yahoo). Now, we are sending out HTML mails too. I need to check how they look like. Is there a GUI frontend to the standard linux BSD mailbox? Or should I install some IMAP/POP server for this? Will such server get the emails sent to username@localhost ? Thanks for any suggestion

  • Why does ATI 5570 HD video card driver installation cause Windows 7 To Blue Screen?

    This one is for the hive mind. I have a brand new Dell Optiplex 760 workstation with 4 gigabytes of RAM running Windows 7 Professional (32bit). This is a new box with nothing installed other than what was provided for directly by Dell. I installed a Saphire ATI PCI Express 5570 HD. Upon trying to install the 10.4 Catalyst drivers the system will blue screen. It blue screens during the hardware detection phase of the installation process. I have already performed the following trouble shooting steps: Changed system RAM Installed only 2 gigabytes of RAM Installed different versions of Catalyst drivers (10.4 - 9.12) Tried to install video only component of driver (vs entire Catalyst suite) Made sure Windows 7 was fully updated Flashed mother board BIOS to current version Removed and re-seated video card Contacted ATI Support (We all know how this went......) Verified supply outputting properly The blue screen error (via Windows BugCheck entry in event log) is a 0x000000CA and refers to a plug and play error most likely caused by a bad driver. The problem is that the driver installation process never gets far enough to actually install a driver. The resolution center in Windows provides a solution of installing the 10.4 Catalyst driver to resolve issue (which fails). Looking for some alternate views to resolve.

    Recently I've been having an issue with my CentOS 6 test server running Apache and Webmin running on port 10000 where when I try accessing any part of the server - SSH/FTP and even my domains (I have two - both keep getting timeout errors) when I try accessing from any computer on my home network. However when I access via tethering or via my office networks everything loads fine. While the firewall is the first issue at mind, my router never was set to block any special ports, and even after adding port 10000 as a specific exception I'm having no luck. Also, I doubt this is an IP blacklisting issue because I have websites on other servers using CloudFlare for security and I haven't gotten any warnings. Any assistance is greatly apprecaiated. UPDATE: Just some extra details about the issue: My ISP to my knowledge only blocks off ports 25 and 80 for residential users to prevent them from running web servers - however this issue has only come up a day or two ago, before that I was using the server successfully for months. Also the server is not physically located in any of my workspaces - it's a VPS housed in a datacenter

I would like to be able to run two server VMs on this laptop with Win2K8 and Ubuntu (preferably 64 bit editions). Windows 7 will be the Host OS since that is the one that ships with the laptop. I am thinking of using VMWare player to run the two server OSs. Is this laptop good enough to run the two VMs side by side or do I need to go for a better configuration? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    I've been searching and reading through documents all morning and understand that I need to use some combination of chown and probably 'jailing' to securely give programmers access to directories on my centos webserver. Here's the situation: I have an apache web server that has any number of virtual sites located in /var/www/site1 /var/www/site2 etc.. I have different developers that need full access both ssh and vsFTP to only the site they are working on. What is the best way to create and maintain security in this scenario. My thought would be to create a new user for each coder, jail that user to the website directory they are allowed to work in, add their user to a group and set the webroot's owner to that group. Any thoughts? Good, bad, ugly? Thanks!

  • Benchmarks relevant for a Visual Studio .Net development workstation

    I am developing a system with Windows 7-64, Visual Studio and Sharepoint on a virtual workstation on some kind of VMWare server. The system is painfully slow, with VS lagging behind when entering code, Intellisense lagging, opening and saving files takes ages when compared to a normal budget laptop. As far as I can see the virtual machine has OK specs and does not seem to be swapping etc., and the IT dept also says that they can't see anything wrong when they're monitoring the system. As long as the problem is not well-documented, the IT dept and management does not want to throw money (=upgraded laptops) at us, so I need to show some sort of benchmark. It has been many years since I did any system benchmarking, and I don't know the current benchmark software, so my question is which benchmark will be most relevant for Visual Studio performance? Not just for compiling fast, but also to reflect the "responsiveness" of the system. Cheers, user30715

Is a set of basic scripts a good means of attack? I was thinking about just having a ton of scripts, such as: setup_dev_env [install|uninstall|reinstall] setup_nfs [...] setup_nfs_share [...] setup_http [...] setup_memcache_node [...] Is there any better method? It would be nice to be able to "upgrade" an installation script too, for example, to change common development settings.

  • Should I switch to Linux for development?

    Is there any advantage to use a Linux machine to develop instead of Windows? Everyone at work tells me to switch to Linux, since I'm developing hard-core on linux anyway. I manage 40 servers, and do everything from DB to data-backend to developing web services. I don't find anything wrong with Putty. I"m just too lazy to install another OS... What do you guys think?
