• Does any know fix/cause of USB drives that lose connection

  I have been having significant problems trying to copy files to a USB drive (G0-Flex 1.5 tb) No matter what I use to try to copy the files (python code, Windows copy and paste or Drobo Copy utility) I ultimately get a failure. The failure is always some indication that the device is not ready or able to be written to. I am pretty sure the problem is that the drive is losing its connection. I have done everything I can find so far including setting the USB Root hub to never turn off the power, I updated some usb drivers etc. I have found references to this problem primarily with Win7-64 bit. I have also had USB connection problems with other devices- we kept losing a connection to our Bravo Disc Publisher when we went to Win7 and finally bought a newer model and have not had problems since. Any pointers about diagnosing and or understanding the problem would be appreciated.

• Can't Shut Down computer with windows 8 Release Preview

  I downloaded Release Preview and installed it. I have a problem when I shut down the computer. After I press windows key + I Power Shut Down, a box pops up titled "Winlogon.exe - No Disk. Then under that is the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into Drive G". After hitting the retry button a couple of different times the screen finally goes dark. When I was going to turn it back on, I noticed the Power Button was still list. The only way to do a complete Shutdown is to hold in the power button directly. How do I fix this problem?

• Recovering portion(s) of file with CRC (cyclic redundancy check) errors in Robocopy

  Is it possible to recover portions of files with CRC errors? If so, how? I have a partially damaged hard drive (2.5" SATA) that I have partially recovered using Spinrite 6.0 (took 2 weeks to run!). I have been successful in getting many of the files off of the drive using Robocopy . /V /S /E /COPY:DAT /R:1 /W:0, but some of the files get to +/- 90% in Robocopy and then fail with a CRC Data Error (cyclic redundancy check). • Using an SSD with no AHCI [ICH7 base] - Windows 7 hangs frequently

  I have a Shuttle Intel G31 + ICH7 (base -- not M/R etc) system. I just bought an OCZ Vertex 3 120gb [VTX3-25SAT3-120G] which includes the Sandforce 2218 firmware. The ICH7 does not support AHCI. I understand that this can be a problem. What I don't understand, is if it's necessary to have the proper performance of this drive. I know that without AHCI I may get a limited read/write speed -- this is fine. What my concern is, is the constant freezing/hangs I'm getting with Windows 7 on any disk activity. The 'Highest Active Time' flip-flops from 0 to 100% every minute or so regardless of large or small files. EDIT: The threads/processes with the highest response time is the kernel. I've been reading about other people with Shuttle SG31G2s, and they seem to be using SSDs no problem. Is this the controller's fault? The fact that I do not have AHCI enabled? It makes sense to me that if this SSD requires AHCI features that it would cause Windows to hang, but I would like to fully determine my situation before returning things/reformatting. To initially have my drive recognise the SSD at all, I had to change the BIOS option to Force Gen II instead of Auto for the SATA controller. I then installed Windows with no problem. There were no errors in the event log related to disk usage, but watching the perfmon I could see the highest active time and the processes (usually pagefile.sys being written to, or chrome/firefox caching) which was correlated to the hanging. So now what I need answered is: should I be returning this SSD and getting one with a different controller, or returning the SSD all-together as it will never work out and I will continue to get these hangs. • Simple Workstation Imaging Solution?

  I need a fairly cheap imaging solution for Windows XP corporate desktops. Ideally, I'd be able to set up a desktop exactly as we want it, create an image, deploy this image to a server, then boot a new desktop to a CD/USB Drive/Network and quickly set up the workstation. Ideally, each computer would also have a unique workstation name. Any ideas? Right now I'm using a custom built Linux DD solution, but it's slow, not network-based, can't image multiple computers at the same time as there's only one copy on a USB drive, and can't uniquely name the computers. • Windows does not detect any modems anymore[HSPA]

  By an accident i uninstalled my Connect manager (ZTE). but when i re-install it the virtual CD drive is detected but it does not detect the drivers. When i direct to the folder containing the relevant drivers(.sys files) still it doesnt detect. Then i tried a modem of a different brand Huawei the same problem presists As i understand it is not a device(brand) driver specific issue as it does not detect modem(dongles) of any brand. when i plugged in a different USB device(a pen drive) the driver is detected and it works perfectly. Please help me with the issue i have tried system restore but it doesnt work. I want a repair that works without re-installing windows [Edit] I tried Karan's suggested method with usboblivion it didnt work. now im sure that the issue does not deal with the registry

• Can't write to file - 'Operation not permitted' WITH sudo

  I am having trouble writing to a few files on an external HD. I am using it to store media files as well as my time machine backup. The drive is formatted as HFS+ Journaled, and other files on the drive can be written successfully. Additionally, the time machine backup is working perfectly. • Auto-detect proxy settings on network

  I am having problems trying to run web browser software on the local network through the proxy. When running off the profile drive which is on a network share, the system is unable to auto-detect proxy settings. When running off the local C drive, the browsers are able to correctly autodetect the settings. The error from the browser is about it being unable to fetch the proxy configuration file. Is this some form of authentication preventing it retreiving the settings when running of the network location? PS. Would this be better off on superuser?

• ADMIN$ and other shares not working remotely on XP machines

  I'm trying to use ADMT to migrate several XP machines to a new domain and the utility (nor command line) is able to access the admin$ share or any drive share. I've added the required registry key (HKCurrent\Services\LanMan\Param) for both servers and workstation admin sharing, rebooted the PC and still am unable to access it. How can I access the admin share on these PCs? If it helps, this machine used to have McAfee installed, and the Windows firewall enabled. I stoppped both of them and the machine is still not allowing me to access it remotely by a drive$ share.

• Cannot boot to HDD or Optical when Motherboard in AHCI mode

  I have an Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard and am trying to swap over to AHCI mode. I have an existing Windows 7 installation which was installed under IDE mode. I have set the msahci registry setting to 0. When I try to boot in AHCI mode I get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I have tried booting with my Win 7 DVD in the optical drive. There is 1 SSD (System), 1 HDD (Data) and 2 optical drives connected via SATA If I switch back to IDE mode everything boots fine, either from the SSD or from a CD or DVD in the optical drive. Why can't I use AHCI mode?

  As the title says, I'm trying to find how to run adb commands through a pre-written script (such as how .bat and .vbs files work) so I can make a semi automatic program to pull some files from my android phone whenever I click on the launch.bat which launches a line of program to go through the phone and find certain files. I know the script line: adb pull /data/data/kik.android/databases/ %drive%\All\Database This copies all the files in this specific database into the flash drive's folder "Database" under the "All" folder. But, how could i make it so that the adb program looks through the phone and finds other files, and how could i pull the specific files, rather than pulling the entire folder?

• 3ware RAID in Windows 7

  Just moved a 3ware 9500S-8 raid card and a few drives from my linux box into my win7 box. Windows Updates picked up the 3ware driver and installed it. After a reboot I checked Disk Management and it shows the array as one solid drive with the correct size. The only issue is that its not assigned a drive letter and when I right click on it my only option is to Convert to Dynamic Disk... From what I've read this is not something I want to do. What are my options?

  Answer: Parts of the hard drive are corrupted. All of my user's code was checked in, so I'm just going to format the box. One of my users has an HP DV5-1235dx laptop running Windows Vista Professional x64. Last night, our WSUS server pushed out a few updates including "Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB960859)". When we try to boot the laptop today, a black screen with white text comes up displaying: xxx/169894 (something) Where xxx increments rapidly and something is some dll or registry key. Eventually that stops and the screen displays !! 0xc01a00d !! 35566/169894 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedDat...) No other computers that received this update are displaying the same error. So far I've tried running CHKDSK off of HBCD. It repaired a thing or two, but the computer still doesn't boot. I tried repairing the Windows install from the Vista CD, but I get a black screen with white text displaying something along the lines of: 0 No Emulation System Type 00 1 No Emulation System Type 00 Select one of the above Booting in Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work. Booting in Safe Mode freezes at Loading Windows Files [snip] Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys Please wait... My next step is trying to boot Safe Mode with Command Prompt and try to run rstrui.exe. While I do that, does anybody have any guidance? Edit: Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt will not work. See Booting in Safe Mode above. Edit 2: I managed to boot from the Vista DVD. • Possible to restore Windows Partition disk image?

  I have a machine that was dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. I used the Disks program in Ubuntu to make a disk image of my windows partition which I saved on an external disk. I then reformatted the main drive and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I created a spare partition and restored that Windows disk image to that partition. Is it possible to boot Windows? I have run boot-repair and Grub now gives me both Ubuntu and Windows options but when I select Windows I get only a black screen with blinking cursor. I ran a Windows recovery disk and ran startup repair but still no luck. I also tried running lilo inside Ubuntu but still can't boot Windows. Any other ideas? PS, I'm on a Netbook with no DVD drive so I can't just reinstall Windows though if that is my only option I can borrow a DVD eventually.

• Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

  I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?

• What would happen in a Software Raid 1 of one HDD and one SSD?

  Hi, I'm running my Windows 7 installation and all of my apps from an SSD for performance reasons. Since SSD's can instantly die at any moment, I'm looking for some kind of data backup strategy. Right Now I regularly backing up the drive image on a hard disk, but that only happens once per day, which is not enough for my taste. So I got an idea: What if I created a software raid 1 of the SSD and partition on my Hard disk? All data would be mirrored on both drives, making this a lot safer. But what about performance? Will Windows 7 detect that the SSD is faster than the hard drive and always read from the SSD? Or will it randomly read from both, thus reducing read performance?   I just bought a new SSD, and installed a fresh copy of Windows on it. I didn't see any noticeable difference in boot times, app start-up times, so I decided to benchmark it. Asus P7P55D-E Intel i5-760 Samsung 830 256GB SATA III Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit The Windows experience index gave the drive a 7.3 rating, but real-world performance is not particularly impressive. Any ideas why the numbers are so low? UPDATE: It turns out that SATA III support is turned off by default on the P7P55D motherboard. After enabling it in BIOS (Tools - Level Up), the scores went up: Read Write Seq 325 183 4K 16 49 IOPS 32K 28K It's an improvement, but still far below what they should be for this drive.

• Lenovo Ideapad Y480 can't reinstall windows?

  Alright, so here's the deal... For a while, I wanted to mess with Linux. I don't know why, but I wanted to. So, what I did was use WUBI and install Ubuntu. Because of some unknown reason (Intel Rapid Start? Half the drivers being on a Lenovo-installed SSD [separate from the main hard drive]?) it wouldn't dual boot. So, I decided to use Linux Mint instead, and install it in a partition. Since Windows 7 Home Premium won't make partitions any more if you have a certain number already, I just shrank my system drive and left empty space for the installer to claim. When I installed Mint, it worked, but left my Windows 7 installation unable to boot and eventually it corrupted. I tried to use a system repair disc I burned earlier but it didn't find the Windows installation, so I assume the partition corrupted. I used this link:http://www.pcworld.com/article/248995/how_to_install_windows_7_without_the_disc.html to try and reinstall Windows. What happened was that originally it said that the partition I was trying to reinstall from had been locked down by the OEM (Lenovo). So, I went into GParted, wiped EVERYTHING, and selected 'Construct new Boot record' or whatever that function is, and now the error is: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information." Does anyone know how to see the log files? Can anyone help? This system is a month old but the warranty only covers hardware failures, and I would need to pay around USD$60 for them to fix it. Please help. Any ideas? this is my main machine... Extra information: I have at my disposal: System Repair Disc (Burned myself) Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 installation disk (burned from the pcworld links) Gparted Live CD Linux Mint 13 live cd A system backup (from the morning before this catastrophe) made using the Windows Backup and Restore. I put it on an external drive...that should be safe for now.

• Unable to map to web folder using WebDAV client on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a client running Windows Server 2008 R2 on several servers. One of the servers is also running SharePoint 3.0 and my client has created a web folder to map to. I can map to the web folder from all Server 2008 R2 boxes that have the WebDAV client (part of Desktop Experience feature) installed, except for the server the folder resides on. When I attempt to map to the web folder on the server which the folder resides, I am repeatedly prompted to enter my credentials. I am using the same account that I used to map the web folder on the other servers. I have also tried mapping from the command line and receive 'Access Denied' What may be causing the problem? I would think that if I can map to the drive from one server, I should be able to map the drive from the rest as long as the WebDAV client is installed, especially on the server where the folder is located. • Why would only the cpu fan not spin and no video displayed?

  I just built a new computer and when I first powered it on I got a continuous beeping which according to the manual means a power failure. After moving the voltage switch to the left a little I was able to get the beeping to stop. Even after the stopping though the CPU fan doesn't spin, and there is no display on the monitor. All the other fans and lights come on in the computer though, the DVD drive is working and ejects the tray, and the hard drive sounds like it spins up. Has anyone seen this before and know what is wrong or what has failed?

• Linking FreeNAS Boxes

  I have two different FreeNAS boxes that are being used for storage. It is possible to link them in a manner that the linked connection can be presented as a single storage destination for clients? For example, I have one FreeNAS installation that has 6 TB of storage and another one that has 4 TB of storage. I would like to be able to present or have a single mapped drive for clients that would be able to span across both of them; however, the client would only see it as one drive. Is this possible? If not, is there a different way I should be approaching this problem? Is there a different OS distribution that would work better for this?

• SQL Server 2000 msdb database loading/suspect

  My SQL Server recently suffered a raid controller/hard drive crash. After getting my hard drive problem corrected I soon found that some of my databases were (suspect) namely msdb. I am not a DBA by any means however am somewhat familiar with the daily SQL activities that happen on my server. So I restored from backup, and tried to bring my msdb database online. It is now forever stuck in (Loading\Suspect) and I am unable to script backups for my important databases. I can recreate all of the backup plans etc if i can somehow get a working msdb.
