• Moving webshop storage to NoSQL solution

  If you had a webshop solution based on SQL Server relational DB what would be the reasons, if any, to move to NoSQL storage ? Does it even make sense to migrate datastores that rely on relations heavily to NoSQL? If starting from scratch, would you choose NoSQL solution over relational one for a webshop project, which will, after a while, again end up with a bunch of tables like Articles, Classifications, TaxRates, Pricelists etc. and a magnitude of relations between them? What's the support like in .NET (4.0) for MongoDB or MongoDB's support for .NET 4.0? Can I count on rich code generation tools similar to EF wizard, L2SQL wizard etc. for MongoDB? Because as what I have read so far, NoSQL's are mostly suited for document storage, simpler object models. Your answer to this question will help me make the right infrastructure design decisions.

• DataContractAttribute with Shared Assembly

  Hi All, Is it necessary to decorate custom objects with [DataContract] and [DataMember] when using shared assemblies (as opposed to auto proxy generation)? The reason I ask is that I have encountered the following scenario: Suppose the following object is implemented in my service: public class baseClass { Guid _guid; public baseClass() { _guid = Guid.NewGuid() } public Guid ReturnGuid { get {return _guid;}} } public class newClass : baseClass { int _someValue; public newClass {} public int SomeValue { get {return _someValue;} set {_someValue = value;} } } [ServiceContract] public IService { [OperationContract] newClass SomeOperation(); } In my client (with shared assemblie) I can happily recieve and use a serialized newClass when SomeOperation is called - even though I have not marked it as a DataContract. However, as soon as I do mark it with DataContract and use DataMember then it complains that set is not implemented on ReturnGuid in the base class. Could somebody explain why it works fine when I do not decorate with DataContract and DataMember. Many thanks.

• Multicast File copy with Unicast responses

  I'm trying to do some multicast big file copies over to remote clients on the other side of a satellite link. The idea is to minimize the amount of traffic going up to the satellite. I tried using uftp without luck. The problem is that, even though we can reach clients via multicast from our central Hub, they aren't able to respond to a multicast address (it's not supported by the return link). As uftp needs to respond to a multicast address in order to report any missing packets I'm out of luck. So does anyone have any recommendations or alternatives I can use to do the trasfers? Any tip or pointer would be appreciated.

• Get OpenVPN clients names to resolve through dnsmasq

  I have a PFSense box running as an OpenVPN server. There are several remote devices that connect through the VPN (as tap devices). The VPN stuff is working, I can access the remote hardware by looking up the IP assigned to each device on the PFSense router. What I'd like is to have it so I can resolve the remote hardware addresses via DNS while on the local network. Note that this is only local-network - remote-device (they're backup boxes). I don't need to have the remote devices resolve using the local DNS forwarding agent. I have the rest of the devices on the network that need to be accessible via DNS report their name during the DHCP process. However, the IP assignment for OpenVPN tap clients, while it is dynamic (which is why I need DNS), does not seem to use the local DHCP server. How can I have my openvpn server add information for it's clients to the dnsmask resolver? Is this setup even reasonable (I'm not familiar with openVPN at all)?

• When resizing Windows Explorer on Windows 8 it crashes?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes. • Group Policy dealing with IE zone assignment not sticking!

  I have a group policy (which ONLY deals with the zone assignment) -that is continually switching on and off with reboots. I thought it was a conflicting group policy but when I run group policy modeling report it doesn't show any descrepancies that I can see. I thought it may be an issue with one domain controller wasn't replicating my policy change to the other one, but this isn't the case. I checked both domain controllers and they show the same information. The assignment is on a user basis and is in: user configuration > administrative templates > windows components > internet explorer > internet control panel > security and is site to zone assignment.

  We had done a PCI scan on one of our servers running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with apache 2.2.22.The scan reported a vulnerability in apache 2.2.22 (Apache HTTP Server Zero-Length Directory Name in LD_LIBRARY_PATH Vulnerability).The report states to updgrade the version to the latest stable release of either 2.2.23 or 2.4.2.How do I upgrade to the 2.2.23 to fix the vulnerability or is there a patch available that can fix this and if yes can you let me know how that can be patched. • How to Check the Performance of VPS?

  I have subscribed to a VPS offered by a hosting provider. The guaranteed performance 1GB RAM, 1M bandwidth. But I found that from time to time the websites can be very slow, so slow that it could take more than 30 seconds to load a simple Joomla website. However the website resumed the usual speed after a few minutes. This created a problem for me when I want to report the performance problem to the hosting provider. They would say to me "see, no problem". Of course there is no problem because the problem is only there for a few minutes , and everything is normal. This ocassionally-slow problem will bug me a few days later and the cycle repeats. Any idea how to solve this problem?

  I am using automongobackup to, well, automate the backups of mongodb. output from the script (to STDERR) has the following exceptions (but the backup completes, and the dump files are created) ###### WARNING ###### STDERR written to during mongodump execution. Why would automongobackup report connection errors, even tho it does create the dump files, yet a straight call to mongodump does not?   im using mvc framework and i have learned some techniques that help me with different parts of RAD. models: doctrine/visual paradigm controllers/libraries: various design patterns now i only need to know what technique/solution i should use for the views so that i can create views more rapidly. cause i don't think it's efficient to code css/html manually, even though i understand it. its the same principle when using visual paradigm to create both my mysql database tables and doctrine model classes. i believe in using right tools will boost up development speed. so what could i use for the views to save time and energy and don't reinvent the wheel all the time? dreamweaver? any css generation tools? 960/blueprint for layout? suggestions? thanks

• What does it mean for a computer to be an "IBM Compatible PC"?

  A couple questions about this: 1) Is this term even relevant any more? 2) Does this mean anything from a developer's stand point? It is not exactly clear to me if this is a BIOS, architecture, bus or a combination. A piece of software I'm working on expects to see a "Description" of the system and currently windows machines report "AT/AT Compatible". Having been tasked to port this to Mac, I really don't know what a proper "Description" would be - this will most likely be omitted but I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight on the modern usage of this term.

• 3D framework/library os x

  Does anyone have any advice as to a good framework for simplifying the generation of 3D models? I am trying to construct a parametric program for tasks such as ship design. Actions such as surface modelling, intersections etc are a must. I have investigated openCASCADE and it shows promise but getting it to integrate into a native cocoa interface is not currently achievable (By me at any rate). All ideas and suggestions welcome. Should I just forget it and integrate an X11 window, if so any tutorials for doing this?

• What is causing my wireless problems?

  I have a Dell XPS M1330, since I moved to my new house, the wireless barely works on it, my housemates report no problems, so I guess it's something to do with my laptop. It's eratic in normal mode, sometimes not working for days, usually working on-and-off, forcing me to reload pages a few times before they work, etc. It works perfectly in safe mode, the driver I'm using is the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, version 12.4.4.5, with a date at 26/10/2009, the most recent one I could find, bluetooth is not enabled, and I'm running Vista 32-bit Home Premium, which it shipped with. I also tried disabling IPv6 and resetting the IP stack, both to no avail. Can anybody help me?

• Is there a way to create a copy-on-write copy of a directory?

  I'm thinking of a situation where I would have something that creates a copy of a directory, tweaks a few files, and then does some processing on the result. This wold be done fairly often, maybe a few dozen times a day. (The exact use case is testing patch submissions; dupe the code, patch it, build/test/report/etc.) What I'm looking for could be done by creating a new directory structure and populating it with hard links from the origonal. However this only works if all the tools you use delete and recreate files rather than edit them in place. Is there a way to have the file system do copy-on-write for a file? Note: I'm aware that many FSs use COW at a block level (all updates are done via writes to new blocks) but this is not what I want.

  I'm doing Elgamal Signature Scheme and I need to use the decimal hash value from the message to compute S for signature generation. string hash = md5(message); cout << hash << endl; NTL::ZZ msgHash = strtol(hash.c_str(), NULL, 16); cout << msgHash << endl; There are no integer large enough to contain the value of 32 byte hexadecimal hash, and so I tried big integer from NTL library but it didn't work out because you cannot assign long integer to NTL::ZZ type. Is there any good solution to this? I'm doing this with visual C++ in Visual Studio 2013.

• SVN Checkout error on large repositories

  I wonder if anyone can help me. We have recently migrated our Subversion repository from a VisualSVN Server on Windows to a subversion server on CentOS. The migration was succesfull however we are getting the following error message Error REPORT of svn'/svn/MangoRepository/!svn/vcc/default': Could not read chunk size: Error connection was closed by server (http://servername) Now the workaround for this is simply to perform a update on the repo and it will contine where is left off. Im just wondering if anyone was a permanent fix for this as it can be quite frustrating to repeat my self to 60-70 developers.

• MySQL keeps crashing due to bug

  So about a week ago, I finally figured out what was causing my server to continually crash. After reviewing my mysqld.log I keep seeing this same error, 101210 5:04:32 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 Here is a link to the bug report, http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=35346 someone recommend that you set the max_join_size vaule in my.cnf to 4M, and I did. I assumed this fixed the issue, and it was working for about a week with no issues until today... I checked MySQL and the same error is now back, 101216 06:35:25 mysqld restarted 101216 6:38:15 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 101216 6:38:15 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 101216 06:40:42 mysqld ended Anyone know how I can really fix this issue? I can't keep having mysql crash like this. EDIT: I forgot to mention every time this happens I get an email from linode staying I have a high disk io rate Your Linode, has exceeded the notification threshold (1000) for disk io rate by averaging 2483.68 for the last 2 hours.

• what do you use for storage discovery / storage management?

  I am looking for some ideas on what would be the best way to discover and manage network storage. Discovery: Any good tools that will scan hosts and storage devices and report back their findings? Maybe using SNMP or WMI? Management: I'm currently looking at Storage Manager by Solar Winds, but it is a bit pricey. Any good open source projects like this? Just looking for ideas of how to get better visibility into the storage infrastructure on this network. It includes a HP Lefthand Iscsi san and EC VNX san.   Hi, I am developing a console application. This application generates a self signed certificate and installs it in the current machine's certificate store. The steps invlolved are :- Generate a certificate Create a pfx file Install the pfx file For these steps i would need a password for protecting the private key and the pfx file. However these passwords are used only during the execution of the exe. Should I auto generate a password using some random number generation algorithm or accept the password as input from the user? • Skype audio always goes 'robotic' for the same user

  Someone I talk to on Skype a lot has a very persistent issue, where after a few minutes their voice goes very 'robotic'... still understandable but annoying. We can restart the call and it's fine, but fairly consistently after a few minutes it returns. He experiences this with other people too, not just me - I don't have anyone report problems with my audio quality. This is not an ISP issue - he gets the same problem on multiple PCs in different countries, in fact he's even recently moved to a different continent and got a new internet connection... same problem. It seems somehow to be a problem with his Skype account, which is really quite odd. It's been going on for months of not longer.
