  • .NET app - Should we use SQL Server and duplicate some reference data from an external Oracle DB? Or use Oracle and have a DB link?

    We're looking to migrate some existing Excel/Access processes into a new system which will provide the users with a Silverlight frontend to run and view the reports instead of using MS Access. The initial idea was to have SQL Server 2008 as RDBMS. The problem is that we've got some static data such as country codes, counterparties, etc which live in an existing Oracle DB. Since we do not want to duplicate that data (if possible), we were thinking of having a DB link between SQL Server and Oracle, but our firm does not allow that. So the options are either duplicate the data or use Oracle as RDBMS - surprise, the firm does allow DB links between Oracle databases. The initial idea was also to use WCF RIA Services, Entity Framework, etc which we're not sure they play well with Oracle, that's why it was decided to go with SQL Server in the first place. Would you advise to go for Oracle so that we can just link the static data? Or use SQL Server 2008 and replicate it because it's "safer" to stay within the Microsoft land? To use or not to use Entity Framework and WCF RIA Services at all? Regards. UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your answers. Nothing is set in stone yet. We'll try to import the data instead of linking, as if the other DB goes down, our system can still carry on. We're likely to use SQL Server just because most developers are more experienced with it. Even if we used RIA Services, we can swap out the Data Access Layer and use other frameworks such those mentioned below.

    Are there any free solutions for automatically migrating a database from MySQL to SQL Server Server that "just works"? I've been attempting this simple (at least I thought so) task all day now. I've tried: SQL Server Management Studio's Import Data feature Create an empty database Tasks - Import Data... .NET Framework Data Provider for Odbc Valid DSN (verified it connects) Copy data from one or more tables or views Check 1 VERY simple table Click Preview Get Error: The preview data could not be retrieved. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: ERROR [42000] [MySQL][ODBC 5.1 Driver][mysqld-5.1.45-community]You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '"table_name"' at line 1 (myodbc5.dll) A similar error occurs if I go through the rest of the wizard and perform the operation. The failed step is "Setting Source Connection" the error refers to retrieving column information and then lists the above error. It can retrieve column information just fine when I modify column mappings so I really don't know what the issue is. I've also tried getting various MySql tools to output ddl statements that SQL Server understand but haven't succeeded. I've tried with MySQL v5.1.11 to SQL Server 2005 and with MySQL v5.1.45 to SQL Server 2008 (with ODBC drivers 3.51.27.00 and 5.01.06.00 respectively)

    Hi all, In the MSDN is writen about TreeNode that: "By default, a node is in selection mode." "To put a node into selection mode, set the node's NavigateUrl property to an empty string." "When a node is in selection mode, use the SelectAction property to specify which event or events are raised when a node is selected." "Setting TreeNodeSelectAction value TreeNodeSelectAction.Select Raises the SelectedNodeChanged event when a node is selected." Please see TreeNode Here is the problem and possibly a bug in the control: When I set the TreeNode object PopulateOnDemand value to true and call the Collapse() function on that node. Then the TreeNodeExpanded event is raised in addition to the SelectedNodeChanged event. This is in complate contradiction to what is writen in the MSDN. According to the MSDN this sould happen only if TreeNodeSelectAction Property is set to TreeNodeSelectAction.SelectExpand value. Does some know whats the cause for that?     I am f...fed up with Subversion. Need a version control that: Can be used without affecting the sources with embedded files (like the Subversion .svn-directories), or having to check in and then check out (If you want to version control live web-site files for example). It should always be possible to bring the repository quickly up to date whatever I have done (Without resolving conflicts or adding files first etc.) Ideally it should be possible to merge repositories starting out as separate. I thing it should be a distributed one, I think GIT is the Lingua Franca, but there is also Mercurial and Bazaar, which should have some advantages since they exist :-)

    I have about had it with this tool, I check the save password box at the login dialogue but it just doesn't work. Sometimes it will for a few days, and then the password will just be gone. Nearly every time I load this thing up I have to track down the password again and type it in. Is there some password rule in the database that would be causing this? This is driving me absolutely crazy.

    I'm currently starting a project which is going to be developed on a few different computer and I'm keeping in sync with bzr. In the project I'm using a couple of 3rd party libraries, like SDL. In the past I've just pushed a copy of the compiled library to my version control, but that usually seems to massively inflate the size of the branch and generally seem like a bad idea. Is that the normal practice, just pushing the required libraries, or is there a better way of added libraries to distributed version control like bzr or git? (I know on svn you can use svn:external to do something similar to this)

    This is the deal: I have more than one blog (not running yet) that I want to install in subfolders for one of my domains. Each blog will obviously have its own look and feel and content. I could just have a set of control panels and administer them individually or I could somehow manage them form a single control panel. Issues I've come across are: Some plugins offer this functionality while suppressing other features like auto draf saving, in-post category and tag creation, image upload etc. I'm not necessarily looking for a ready solution, more like some guidance on how to approach this particular problem in the best possible manner. I'm looking for a fully working scenario, not some plugin that allows me to more or less simulate the one-blog-administration experience.

    I'm trying to drop a constraint on a db table, something like: ALTER TABLE MyTable drop CONSTRAINT FK_MyTable_AnotherTable But the execution just runs and runs. If I stop it I see: Msg 3727, Level 16, State 0, Line 2 Could not drop constraint. See previous errors. Web search throws up various pages but note that the constraint is properly named and I am trying to remove it using the correct name

  • How do you get the ID of a control in ASP.NET

    I am attempting to loop through an array of numbers, match them to the checkbox they they are associated with, and checkmark that box. My checkbox is set up like: <input type="checkbox" runat="server" id="someID" name="somename" value="1234" /> My code when the page loads currently looks like: foreach (string interest in interests_Var){ foreach (var c in Page.Controls) { } } interests_Var is my array containing different numbers. We'll assume one of them is 1234. While looping through the page controls, I want to compare the value of the control to my number. If it equals my number, I want to then apply the attribute checked="checked". I'm assuming I have to find the ID of the control I am using, then use that ID to add a new attribute. Or is there a way I can add the attribute using the c variable? I'm not dead set on this setup, so if you know a better way, I'm all ears. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Basically I'm looking for a way to create a query that is essentially a WHERE IN LIKE SELECT statement. As an example, if I wanted to find all user records with a hotmail.com email address, I could do something like: SELECT UserEmail FROM Users WHERE (UserEmail LIKE '%hotmail.com') But what if I wanted to use a subquery as the matching criteria? Something like this: SELECT UserEmail FROM Users WHERE (UserEmail LIKE (SELECT '%'+ Domain FROM Domains)) Is that even possible? If so, what's the right syntax?

    Hi, I have a SqlServer2005 table "Group" similar to the following: Id (PK, int) Name (varchar(50)) ParentId (int) where ParentId refers to another Id in the Group table. This is used to model hierarchical groups such as: Group 1 (id = 1, parentid = null) +--Group 2 (id = 2, parentid = 1) +--Group 3 (id = 3, parentid = 1) +--Group 4 (id = 4, parentid = 3) Group 5 (id = 5, parentid = null) +--Group 6 (id = 6, parentid = 5) You get the picture I have another table, let's call it "Data" for the sake of simplification, which looks something like: Id (PK, int) Key (varchar) Value (varchar) GroupId (FK, int) Now, I am trying to write a stored proc which can get me the "Data" for a given group. For example, if I query for group 1, it returns me the Key-Value-Pairs from Data where groupId = 1. If I query for group 2, it returns the KVPs for groupId = 1, then unioned with those which have groupId = 2 (and duplicated keys are replaced). Ideally, the sproc would also fail gracefully if there is a cycle (ie if group 1's parent is group 2 and group 2's parent is group 1) Has anyone had experience in writing such a sproc, or know how this might be accomplished?     We are having a problem in our test and dev environments with a function that runs quite slowly at times when called from an .Net Application. When we call this function directly from management studio it works fine. Here are the differences when they are profiled: From the Application: CPU: 906 Reads: 61853 Writes: 0 Duration: 926 From SSMS: CPU: 15 Reads: 11243 Writes: 0 Duration: 31 Now we have determined that when we recompile the function the performance returns to what we are expecting and the performance profile when run from the application matches that of what we get when we run it from SSMS. It will start slowing down again at what appear to random intervals. We have not seen this in prod but they may be in part because everything is recompiled there on a weekly basis. So what might cause this sort of behavior?

    Hello, I have developed a browser using the standard WebBrowser control in my application that is built against CF 3.5. Google search is not working in the browser. That is when i navigate to www.google.co.in and type a keyword and click on the serach button nothing is happening. Outside the application from the device if i try the same thing in IE am getting a security warning dialog box and if ok is clicked search results are shown.     There are two master databases and two read-only copies updated by standard transactional replication. It is needed to map some entity from both read-only databases, lets say that A databases contains orders and B databases contains lines. The problem is that replication to one database can lag behind replication of second database, and at the moment of mapping R-databases will have inconsistent data. For example. We stored 2 orders with lines at 19:00 and 19:03. Mapping process started at 19:05, but to the moment of mapping A database replication processed all changes up to 19:03, but B database replication processed only changes up to 19:00. After mapping we will have order entity with order as of 19:03 and lines as of 19:00. The troubles are guaranteed:) In my particular case both databases have temporal model, so it is possible to fetch data for every time slice, but the problem is to identify time of latest replication. Question: How to synchronize replication processes for several databases to avoid situation described above?
