• batch file to disable network share on Windows XP

  Loosely related to this question Network Share causing Cygwin to run slowly after 'ls', I'd like to write a little batch file that I can execute to disconnect the host from any network shares and subsequently another batch file to reconnect. Ideally, this would be something that I can execute from a PuTTY terminal, SSHed into the box running cygwin. I'm pretty sure the batch files can be written easily, but I don't know about executing them from a PuTTY terminal. Regardless, I'd still like the batchfiles anyways. For the sake of simplicity my process would be: Log into server via PuTTY Run batch files to disconnect shares Do what I need to do Run batch files to reconnect shares Exit session, closing PuTTY

• sudo rejects password that is correct

  sudo (Which I have configured to ask for a password) is rejecting my password (as if I mis-typed it) I am absolutely not typing it incorrectly. I have changed the password temporarily to alphabetic characters only, and it looks fine in plaintext, in the same terminal. I have my username configured thus: myusername ALL=(ALL) ALL I am using my password, NOT the root password, which are distinct. Just to be sure, I've tried both (even though I know the root password is not what I should use) - neither work. I have added myself to the group 'wheel' additionally, and included the following line: %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. I don't know what would cause it to act as though it was accepting my password, but then reject it. I have no trouble logging in with the same password, either at terminal shells, or through the X11 login manager.

• How do I know I'm running inside a linux "screen" or not?

  The "screen" refers to a program mentioned in How to reconnect to a disconnected ssh session . That is a good facility. But there is a question I'd really like to know. How do I know whether I'm running inside a "screen"? The difference is: If yes, I know I can safely close current terminal window, e.g., close a PuTTY window, without losing my shell(Bash etc) session. If no, I know I have to take care of any pending works before I close the terminal window. Better, I'd like this status to be displayed in PS1 prompt so that I can see it any time automatically.

• a safer no password sudo?

  Ok, here's my problem - Please don't yell at me for being insecure! :) This is on my host machine. I'm the only one using it so it's fairly safe, but I have a very complex password that is hard to type over and over. I use the console for moving files around and executing arbitrary commands a LOT, and I switch terminals, so sudo remembering for the console isn't enough (AND I still have to type in my terrible password at least once!) In the past I have used the NOPASSWD trick in sudoers but I've decided to be more secure. Is there any sort of compromise besides allowing no password access to certain apps? (which can still be insecure) Something that will stop malware and remote logins from sudo rm -rf /-ing me, but in my terminals I can type happily away? Can I have this per terminal, perhaps, so just random commands won't make it through? I've tried running the terminal emulations as sudo, but that puts me as root.

• Mac OS 10.7 Missing Java Completely

  I'm in dire straights. I was trying to replace my java JDK and downgrade to 1.6 and somehow managed to completely screw up all the previous versions in the process. Bottom line, my Mac has no JDK installed at all. I've tried reinstalling java 1.7 from Oracle, I've tried using Pacifist to manually extract the files from the 1.6 Apple Java... nothing. When I open terminal and use java -version all I get is -bash: java: command not found My real goal is just to get back to java 1.7, but even after running the installer, java is still inaccessible to terminal and other applications.

• Truecrypt on Linux (permission confusion)

  I am pretty inexperienced with Linux... So please bare with me here. I keep running into permission problems when working with truecrypt on Linux. Currently, I run truecrypt as root to mount my encrypted devices and containers. This all works fine, but I have to interact with the mounted volumes in the terminal as root, and I can't seem to use many of my applications on the files... Either because they can't be run as root or I don't know how to use them from the terminal. This seems really inconvenient to me. How do people deal with this? Am I missing something, or is this just the way things have to be? I am on Fedora 17 (KDE spin) now but I have this trouble with any distro I try.

It fails always with following error: svn: OPTIONS of 'http://url/': authorization failed: Could not authenticate to server: rejected Basic challenge (http://url) Here the call out of my script: $(svn $command $url $auth --non-interactive --no-auth-cache .) Running the same command from the terminal works fine. What is the difference between running from shell script and terminal? • cygwin ssh shortcut on windows desktop

  I have multiple servers that I need to remote into. I prefer Cygwin over Putty to do so. Anyhows - the process of opening my cool Mintty window and then typing the following commands takes too long. PS - I am using a "key" authentication to these servers. First, I double Click Cygwin Terminal shortcut from my windows desktop. Then once the terminal session has booted up, from the command prompt I type the following - $ eval `ssh-agent` $ ssh-add $ ssh <username>@<servername> Please keep in mind that my 'servername' is variable. In fact I have about 10 different server names that could potentially be inserted there - Hence my need for 10 different shortcuts. I would prefer to double click on something from my desktop that will fire up my Mintty and automatically execute the above bash shell commands. Does anyone have or can recommend a nice/elegant solution to do this?

  I am trying to allow my laptop (Ubuntu 13.04) to access my PC (Lubuntu 13.04) hard drive through SSHFS. I'm using RSA keys to connect. It works perfectly fine if I type this in the terminal: sshfs my-PC:/a_folder /media/a_folder But I would like it to be mounted automatically when I boot my laptop. So I added myself to the fuse group: sudo adduser mynickname fuse And I added the following line to my fstab file: sshfs#mynickname@my-PC:/a_folder /media/a_folder fuse defaults,idmap=user,_netdev 0 0 When I boot the laptop, a_folder appears in the list of devices, but is not mounted. When I try to access it through Nautilus, it displays the following error: mount: only root can mount sshfs#mynickname@my-PC:/a_folder on /media/a_folder I get the same error if I try mount /media/a_folder in a terminal. If I try sudo mount /media/a_folder I get read: Connection reset by peer I tried to add "allow_other" as an option in the fstab entry, and uncommented the related line in /etc/fuse.conf, but it didn't change anything. The user "mynickname" is the owner of the folder /media/a_folder and has rwx permissions. I looked at many threads on the internet about people with quite similar issues, but nothing worked so far. Usually, people can't even do sshfs my-PC:/a_folder /media/a_folder without getting an error, whereas this works fine on my laptop. Any insight and tips will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

• How to configure Unity/Compiz in 12.04 so that Update Manager opens maximized w/screen bigger than 1024×600?

  In Precise, window auto-maximize is disabled on monitors with a resolution above 1024 × 600 [1]. I have a bigger resolution, but I prefer maximized windows anyway. I want Update Manager to start maximized. What I've tried so far: In Compiz Config Settings Manager, I have Place Windows activated and 'Windows with fixed placement mode' has windows matching the rule "(name=gnome-terminal) | (name=update-manager)" set to 'Maximize'. With this, Gnome Terminal starts maximized, Update Manager does not. In Compiz Config Settings Manager, I have set a Window Rules [2] rule to match "name=update-manager". Irregardless of any rules set or not, activating Window Rules results in not being able to bring out Unity Launcher anymore, Alt+Tab window switching becoming slow or nonfunctional entirely and the screen sporadically freezing completely. Not a viable option apparently. I've installed Maximus [3] and started it. Update Manager ignores it (or vice versa). I've not tried devilspie and would prefer not to. Having to configure something external for this would seem stupidly redundant with (the no-brainer) Maximus and all these Compiz options already available. I just can't seem to make them work. • How to Find Your IP Address in Ubuntu Linux

  In Windows, we use the command-line program ipconfig to find out our IP address. How do you find it in Ubuntu? We will show you two locations easily accessible through the GUI and, of course, a terminal command that will get your IP address in no time. The first location, and the easiest in most cases, is found by right clicking the network icon in the notification area and clicking Connection Information. This brings up a window which has a bunch of information, including your IP address. The second location, which shows you more detail than this first method, is at System > Administration > Network Tools. Select the right network device, and you’ve got a ton of information at your fingertips. Finally, if you can’t tear yourself away from a terminal window, the command to type in is: ifconfig Yes, it’s only one character different than ipconfig. Who would have guessed? As it turns out, you’re always a few clicks or keystrokes away from finding your IP address in Ubuntu. Isn’t choice great? I have been working on something, and I have tons of lines in the current scrollback session and I want to copy everything to a file, how to?? According to the screen home page, looks like you can do this? but when I'm done I do a search for all those files, can't find them. I tried, it, and looked around, can't tell. Ctrl-a ~ - Save the current window's scrollback buffer there's also enter, copy mode, select with space key, and press enter to copy, I do that, the screen displays gibberish for 10 seconds refreshes, done. cat >> ~/log.output << COMM --paste using ctrl a ] I think-- COMM this confirms the copy paste works, but when I press enter, nothing get saved to that log file, I've checked, I do have write privileges in my home directory. lol the select all, from the xfce4-terminal doesn't go far enough, and scrolling back with the mouse, well won't work, no need to try it, I know byobu buffer doesn't work like that.

• Why does my computer crash when I minimise the last window?

  I am runnung Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. If I have a few windows open (say four to six, not a large amount), and minimise all by pressing Ctrl+Super+D, they all minimise immediately with no problems. However, if I minimise them one at a time, by clicking the minimise button with my mouse, the last one often hangs. Usually it will appear as a ghost on the screen for a while, semi-minimised (in other words, shrunk toward the Unity launcher bar, half-size or smaller, and semi-transparent). Usually it will eventually clear; sometimes the computer just freezes and I have to restart it. It doesn’t seem to matter what the window actually is. Just now, I had to restart my computer with Skype* semi-minimised. I’ve seen it freeze before with the Terminal semi-minimised (and the Terminal wasn’t even doing anything at the time). The only pattern is that it’s always the last window minimised which freezes, and that minimising all windows together using the keyboard shortcut works fine. What on earth is going on, and how can I stop it? * I hate Skype, but I need it for work.

• Problem with Mono and .exe file

  I have purchased a piece of software to configure programable radio control transmitters. It says it will run on Linux, see below: Digital Radio runs on: Microsoft Windows 2000/2003/XP Microsoft Windows Vista/Seven/2008, Linux Ubuntu or a distribution with Mono, 32 or 64 bit, also in a virtual machine. Linux requires the Mono package installed, with also the Visual Basic 2005 runtime library. The Linux version is the same executable file of the Windows platform, and can be execute using Mono. You don't need Wine. All the tests have been done on Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 I have tried for weeks to get the drivers for the cable to work in XP or Win7 and I admit defeat. It looks like Ubuntu can run the cable effortlessly but now I can't get the software going. Tried to run in Ubuntu 10.04 with mono, GUI failed and I got the following message in terminal. $ mono ~/Desktop/GigRadioLinux/DigitalRadio/DigitalRadio.exe The entry point method could not be loaded Windows installation requires using a 30 odd character Passkey and a 4.24k text file as a "license" to be entered during running of the exe file. Can someone tell me how I enter the passkey and license into terminal, or is that not my primary problem? I don't understand "entry point method". Tried Wine and that didn't work either. The developer responded to my earlier emails re the cable drivers, but hasn't replied to questions regarding this. If I have left out anything important let me know and I will try to supply more information.

• Cannot get webapps to work after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04. But I cannot use WebApps. In fact there is no sign of them anywhere. Firefox and Chromium are not prompting for integration. I tried re-installing both browsers/webapps plugin of each, but no luck. Out of curiousity, I tried to install unity-webapps-preview through terminal, apt-get reported that this operation is going to need 127mb. After installation, restarting session, nothing. I re-ran the unity-webapp-preview in terminal and SURPRISINGLY it again asked me that this operation is going to need 58mb. After Installation, nothing. Firefox is showing the unity-webapp plugin in Extensions but in Preferences there is noting like Unity settings or options for exceptions in General tab (as I seen in some threads). Chromium is not even showing the plugin in Extensions nor in the settings. Really need help. I know there is a reported bug but it is mostly about the complains that the webapps are not working as they should but in my case they don't seem to exist.
