• Can you install ubuntu on xp and then uninstall xp? how?

  I have a problem with my pc, you can read about it here if you like http://yhoo.it/qIQyMw anyway, I might go for ubuntu, the thing is I'm in Lebanon and here few, very few people use linux, most of them never heard about ubuntu lol, therefore you'll be really lucky if you can buy an ubuntu cd or even if you find someone can find someone capable of installing it. So when they fix my pc, they might install xp coz they don't have a linux operating system, and i hate win 7 and vista so I'll have to download ubuntu and install it by myself, I don't want to dual boot coz i don't have a super computer lol, i have used ubuntu on my vps, never on desktop before so i would like to know if you can download ubuntu, install it, on a xp pro, then remove xp pro? is there any tutorial? thank you

• Why Clonezilla needs to reinstall grub?

  By default CloneZilla Live will reinstall grub after restore. In my particular case I am restoring a disk image to same phisical disk without any partitioning/size change. I am expecting to have exact same state as I had right after backup. However, reinstalling grub will render my system to unbootable. If I remove that option [-g] then everything is fine. My question is in what cases and why CloneZilla ever need to re-install grub when restoring disk image?

• Apache Not Accepting a Path in My Home Folder

  I have trying to set up an Apache site to use a folder in my home folder without any success. I exactly followed the steps in this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP yet I did not succeed; I keep getting error 403, which says that the server doesn't have permission to access the requested page. I searched forums and many suggested changing the permission of the folder. I went straight away and set the permission to 777, but that didn't solve the problem. I made another search and somebody gave me a clue, which is that it could be because my home folder is encrypted. I believe this could be the problem, but: What is the relation between encryption and Apache? I suppose Apache server is requesting the file from the system, rather than trying to access the file bytes! Is there anyway to solve this problem? I don't want to move the folder to /var/www because I am using this Apache for testing, so I want whatever change I make to be immediately reflected, rather than having to copy files which is error prone.

• Canon Pixma 432 network scanner

  I have a problem with a Canon Pixma MX432 Printer/Scanner. I just removed Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 14.04 8/17/2014 on an older desktop that I built (The computer is an AMD build with an ASUS motherboard). The printer/scanner is an all-in-one unit that is networked in my house via WiFi. All of the computers in my house can access this printer/scanner. My Macbook, my wife's Windows 8 laptop, and my kids mini iPads. I am giving Linux a test-drive with some success as far as setting devices up. But, for the life of me I cannot figure out my scanner issue. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Make/Model: Canon Pixma MX432 PPD Driver: I have no idea how to get this info. Supported?: no, from the information I gather from old forum posts. Works?: the printer works via WiFi perfectly, but not the scanner. The Simple Scan program sees the scanner, but produces an error when I attempt to scan. I also tried XSANE, but that program does not even detect the scanner. NOTE: THE PRINTER IS WORKING OFF OF AN UBUNTU DRIVER AND NOT A CANON DRIVER. Linux Version: Ubuntu 14.04 I tried the steps in this post, downloaded the "scangearmp-mx430series-1.90-1-deb.tar.gz" file, but could not get the scanner to work. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2096430.html any suggestions?

The PPA upgrades the default nautilus package and there is no separate "nautilus-elementary" package as of now. When I try to log in my Github account, I get a "net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE" error. I tried with Chrome, Firefox and Opera. In Firefox, if a clean the cache and offline data, it works for a while. Then I can log in, but I still can't create a Github repository, even if I clear the cache again. My friend, in the same network, with Windows, can do whatever he wants on Github's web site, but I can't. I tried many DNS servers, I tried not to set it (my friend doesn't), but it's still not working. My OS: Ubuntu x64 12.04 Ideas, please. And thanks. Also, I can clone any repo but I can't push. I had to change to https://codeplane.com/ due to this problem, but I want to understand why it happens. • Some problems with the keyboard layout

  When I press some keys, sometimes some letters are replaced by others. For example e is replaced with "0we" and c with "x9a". Also other keys are changed. My keyboard layout is actually German. But whenever this problem occurs, it changes to English and I cannot change it back. Occasionally everything works fine. How do I find out whether the keyboard is damaged or just some settings are not right?

• 13.04 Gnome - removing icons from lower panel

  I use the stripped down Gnome UI for 13.04 (Gnome-no effects) and on the bottom there is a panel where you can put icons for app launchers, by dragging them from applications menu. This is probably a really dumb question, but I can't figure out how to REMOVE a launcher icon from that panel once I put there! How is this done? Note - I saw another answer that said click alt-super and right click on top panel - I clicked remove launcher and now my top Application and Places menus are gone! How do I get them back - all screwed up now.

  I think that my printer stopped working with the switch to gnome 3 or unity. Yes I have tried 32 and 64 bit os's. • C or assembly code to find current cpu core speed

  How can my application efficiently determine the following information peroidically while it executes: 1: current speed of each of the 8 CPU cores. 2: which core the code is currently executing on. My application is C and assembly-language, so any solution in either C or assembly-language is fine. This code needs to execute quickly, so creating, reading and processing a file generated by "cat /proc/cpuinfo" is much too slow. The cores slow-down and speed-up automatically, probably to keep CPU temperature under control. Therefore, a one-time measure is not sufficient for my purposes. My application already reads and subtracts the cpu cycle counter in assembly language to determine number of clock cycles, but my program cannot compute elapsed time in nanoseconds unless it knows the current clock frequency of the cpu cores (and which core the code is executing on). • Ubuntu Lagging even LXDE freezes

  Laptop, i3, Ram: 2GB. Using 14.04LTS... and it lags like hell. Even if i open more than 4 tabs in Chrome, it freezes, and often I have no choice but to restart and multi-tasking is kinda difficult and at times impossible. Now there's whole thing about Lubuntu and LXDE that are suposed to be super-fast.. installed LXDE.. mind, not lubuntu-desktop. just LXDE. And it too freezes every now and then, and trust this.. when it freezes, it does so worse than Unity.. ESPECIALLY when i start PCManFM... and mount a disk or two... Any ideas as to why this is happening.. The minimum requirements for Unity are supposed to be 1Gig RAM.. and people are running it fine even on 512 MB...

  I have a strange problem. When I copy/paste via ethernet everything is working fine. But when I go to youtube or downloading some files via internet, connection is freezing very often. Just stop downloading and after few minutes continue and than again stop and etc... Could it be hardware problem with network card or motherboard (network is integrated on board)? I am using Ubuntu 14.04 but it happens on live cd distribution of Mint. There is no restrictions cose when I using on same switch my other laptop with linux installed everything working fine.

Is there any way to blacklist appindicators for apps that are Unity-compliant (not old-style indicators) but don't provide a "Don't show in the system tray" option? Any solutions to ban an appindicator from being displayed, GUI- or CLI-based, are welcome. (I'm not looking for a way to just hide them like you can hide system tray icons in Windows.) (New-style appindicators can't be removed from the systray-whitelist.)

  there is program NetLimiter for windows. while I was using windows it was very useful to me to find out the IP address of ther person who was downloading from me, or to know IP address of any person on lan who was using DC++ with some nick. and after that I can easily know the computer name of that person using nbtstat. I was wondering if there is any tool for ubuntu using which I an find out the IP address of person who is downloading from me or from whom I am downloading on lan. I am on university lan and we are using PtokaX and DC++ for file sharing on lan. people sometimes put some offencive stuff on open chat on DC++ using some Nick and I don't know how to trace them while I am using Ubuntu.
