• Should tests be self written in TDD?

  We run a project, which we want to solve with test driven development. I thought about some questions that came up, when initiating the project. One question was, who should write the unit-test for a feature. Should the unit-test be written by the feature-implementing programmer? Or should the unit test be written by another programmer, who defines what a method should do and the feature-implementing programmer implements the method until the tests runs? If i understand the concept of TDD in the right way. The feature-implementing programmer has to write the test by himself, because TDD is procedure with mini-iterations. So it would be too complex to have the tests written by another programmer? What would you say, should the tests in TDD written by the programmer himself or should another programmer write the tests that describes what a method can do?

• jQuery/Javascript framework efficiency

  My latest project is using a javascript framework (jQuery), along with some plugins (validation, jquery-ui, datepicker, facebox, ...) to help make a modern web application. I am now finding pages loading slower than I am used to. After some js profiling (thanks VS2010!), it seems a lot of the time is taken procesing inside the framework. Now I understand the more complex the ui tools, the more processing needs to be done. The project is not yet at a large stage and I think would be average functions. At this stage I can see it is not going to scale well. I noticed things like the 'each' command in jQuery takes quite a lot of processing time. Have others experienced some extra latency using JS frameworks? How do I minimise their effect on page performance? Are there best practices on implementation using JS frameworks? Thanks

  Hello, does the Java Compiler optimize a statement like this if (a == true) { if (b == true) { if (c == true) { if(d == true) { //code to process stands here } } } } to if (a == true && b==true && c==true && d == true) So thats my first question: Do both take exactly the same "CPU Cycles" or is the first variant "slowlier". My Second questin is, is the first variant with the cascaded if considered bad programming style as it is so verbose? (I like the first variant as I can better logically group my expressions and better comment them (my if statements are more complex than in the example), but maybe thats bad proramming style?) and even slowlier, thats why I am asking... • Why is Django reverse() failing with unicode?

  Here is a django models file that is not working as I would expect. I would expect the to_url method to do the reverse lookup in the urls.py file, and get a url that would correspond to calling that view with arguments supplied by the Arguments model. from django.db import models class Element(models.Model): viewname = models.CharField(max_length = 200) arguments = models.ManyToManyField('Argument', null = True, blank = True ) @models.permalink def to_url(self): d = dict( self.arguments.values_list('key', 'value') ) return (self.viewname, (), d) class Argument(models.Model): key = models.CharField(max_length=200) value = models.CharField(max_length=200) The value d ends up as a dictionary from a unicode string to another unicode string, which I believe, should work fine with the reverse() method that would be called by the permalink decorator, however, it results in: TypeError: reverse() keywords must be strings

  I'm using minidom to parse through an xml document. I took the data with yum tags and stored them in a list and calculated the frequency of the words. However, its not storing or reading them as strings in the list. Is there another way to do it?   Hi, I have the following class: public class Item { public Dictionary<string, string> Data { get; set; } } and a list of it: List<Item> items; I need to filter and order this list dynamicly using SQL-Like strings. The catch is, that I need to order it by the Data dictionary. For example: Order By Data["lastname"] or Where Data["Name"].StartsWith("a"). I thought to use the dynamic linq library, but is there any way that my clients can write without the Data[]? For example: Name.StartsWith("abc") instead of Data["Name"].StartsWith("abc") ? • Regex only retrieves the first necessary element but not all of them

  Can anybody help me with retrieving some elements from the following example text: sdfaasdflj asdfjl;a AB-12/34 BC-/85 CD-//8 DD-77 DE-78/9 EE-78-98 asdf; asdjf It is necessary to get the following elements: AB-12/34, BC-/85, CD-//8, DD-77, DE-78/9 When I'm using a regular expression like this: \s*(?<elements>\b[A-Z]{2}-[/0-9]+\b) everything works fine - all the necessary elements are being retrieved (except for the EE element are amonth them, but it doesn't matter). The problem is that this line is a part of a more complex regex, so when I'm trying to apply a regex like this: (?s).*\sas.*? \s*(?<elements>\b[A-Z]{2}-[/0-9]+\b)*.* .*as It only returns me just the first AB-12/34 element and nothing else. How to correct the regex to get all the elements? TIA.

  I am using Unity with MVC and NHibernate. Unfortunately, our UnitOfWork resides in a different .dll and it doesn't have a default empty .ctor. How I can setup the RegisterType for this Interface in order to pass the two parameters retreived from the web.config? Is it possible?

  Hello, I'm using Eclipse IDE + remote Xdebug. EclipseIDE is listening 9000 port for some kind of Xdebug information. There are some php scripts running by cron on server. So, every cron execution xdebug is sending information to my workstation and EclipseIDE is trying to find this file in my project. But file couldn't be find because cron running scrits do not relate to the project I'm working with. So, every cron run Eclipse IDE is alerting this message http://img2.pict.com/22/fc/86/3299517/0/screenshot2b142.png I've tried to add to cron executed php scripts some strings... if (function_exists('xdebug_disable')) { xdebug_disable(); } ... but it didn't helped. • FxCop CA2000 Warning in UserControls

  Running FxCop on a WebProject that contains a UserControl will result in a CA2000 Warning (Call System.IDisposable.Dispose on object) for every ServerControl (Label, TextBox,...) in that UserControl. I understand why this would happen. Replacing the 'offending' ServerControls with a PlaceHolder and then adding the Controls in code (Using...End Using) might be a way around that, but it is not always an option.But, if they are not 'kosher' why have ServerControls you can drop in your ascx/aspx in the first place ?Am I missing something ? If, like in my case, you inherit a sizeable collection of fairly complex UserControls, do I now add every 'offending' Control to the GlobalSupperssions file (that's a lot of mind numbing right-clicking) ?I do not want to suppress all CA2000 warnings since it makes perfect sense to fix them, but not in the case of ServerControls in UserControls.

  Hello everyone, I am designing a chat applet. In this, a user will append his name to the beginning of the message that he sends to the other user. In the window of other user, I want to retrieve the appended user name from that string. How do I do that? The message sent by the user is as follows : final_msg = user_name + ": " + user_message Hence I want to know how to retrieve the user_name string only. Is there a function that can retrieve a substring upto the first ":"? I dont want to use final_msg.split(":"), because there is a possiblity that the user_message contains ":", which will then give me an array of strings.

• How can I specify the character encoding to be used by OLEDB when querying a DBF?

  Is it possible to specify which character encoding should be used by OLEDB when querying a DBF file? A possible work-around would be to encode the query string before the OLEDB call to the DBF file's character encoding and then encode all the results when they are returned. This will work but it would be nice if OLEDB or possibly ADO.NET could do this for me. UPDATE The suggestion by Viktor Jevdokimov does not seem to work automatically. But it made me investigate manual conversion of the strings. It is possible to use the TextInfo property of CultureInfo to find out the OemCodePage and the WindowsCodePage and use those to get the corresponding Encoding instances to perform manual conversion. But I can not get ADO.NET use these encondings to perform the conversion for me.

I would like the string to have the same information as my floating point variable contains, since I use the output for further processing (even if it means that the string will be very long and readable).   Okay, I have been looking into MVVM pattern, and each time I have previously tried looking into it, I gave up for a number of reasons: Unnecessary Extra Long Winded Coding No apparent advantages for coders (no designers in my office. Currently only myself soon to be another coder) Not a lot of resources/documentation of good practices! (Or at least hard to find) Cannot think of a single scenario where this is advantageous. I'm about to give up on it yet again, and thought I'd ask to see if someone answer the reasons above. I honestly can't see an advantage of using this for a single/partner coding.   I am doing stock market prediction using ANNs in c#.net. I am using NeuronDotNet for the neural part. I have to give eight inputs to the network, with a hidden layer consisting 8 nodes and a single node output layer. Can anybody please give me some coding ideas for this???? This project was not a AI course assignment, but my major project. I have studied about the stocks and found various factors that affected the future value of stock of a company. Now I have to use these factors as input to the neural network. I am not getting into how to implement these factors in the neural network. I have just decided to use those eight factors as eight nodes in the input layer but things are going complex. My concern is to use these factors as input and train the neural network for output as next day's stock value. What major things should I have to care about??

• Practical non-Turing-complete languages?

  Nearly all programming languages used are Turing Complete, and while this affords the language to represent any computable algorithm, it also comes with its own set of problems. Seeing as all the algorithms I write are intended to halt, I would like to be able to represent them in a language that guarantees they will halt. Regular expressions used for matching strings and finite state machines are used when lexing, but I'm wondering if there's a more general, broadly language that's not Turing complete? edit: I should clarify, by 'general purpose' I don't necessarily want to be able to write all halting algorithms in the language (I don't think that such a language would exist) but I suspect that there are common threads in halting proofs that can be generalized to produce a language in which all algorithms are guaranteed to halt. There's also another way to tackle this problem - eliminate the need for theoretically infinite memory. Once you limit the amount of memory the machine is allowed, the number of states the machine is in is finite and countable, and therefore you can determine if the algorithm will halt (by not allowing the machine to move into a state it's been in before).

  How do you parse your user agent strings? I'm looking to get: Browser Browser Version OS OS Version from a user agent string. My app is written in perl and was previously using HTTP::BrowserDetect. It's a bit dated and is no longer maintained. I'm in no way tied to using perl for the actual lookup. I've come to the conclusion that automagic parsing is a lost cause. I was thinking of writing a crud type app to show me a list of unclassified UA's and manually keep them up to date. Does such an resource already exist that I can tap into? It would be awesome if I could make an HTTP call to look up the user agent info. Thanks!

• PInvoke or using /clr:pure to compile

  I have a set of numerical libraries in C++ and I want to call them interactively in a interpretive language like F# or IronPython. So I have two choices now: Compile the library in native DLL and use PInvoke to call functions in it. Compile the C++ library to .Net dll using visual c++ (/clr:pure compile option). The advantage of 1 is that it is very fast, however there are more work in it, e.g. I cannot PInvoke double pointer (e.g. float **), I must write another wrapper in the C++ library to make the interface friendly to .Net. The advantage of 2 is that I don't need to do know Mashaling strings, arrays, etc. However, the .net dll is slower compared to the native one. What others factors should be considered when choosing between the two?

  I am getting this exception from a MySqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(): Index and length must refer to a location within the string. I tried manually adding this data in the table from MySQL GUI tools, and it worked perfectly. I see no "out of range" problem in these strings. Does anybody see something wrong?

The problem is that WPF ignores the property changed event that is raised by it's own update. This results in the user not seeing the text they typed converted to lowercase. How can I change this behaviour so that the TextBox updates with lowercase text? Note: this is just an example I have used to illustrate the problem of WPF ignoring events. I'm not really interested in converting strings to lowercase or any issues with String.Equals(string, string).

  Hi All I have been using spring for a while as my IOC. It has also a very nice way of injecting properties in your beans. Now I am participating in a new project where the IOC is Guice. I dont understand fully the concept how should I inject properties in to my beans using Guice. The question : Is it actually possible to inject raw properties ( strings , ints ) into my guice beans. If the answer is no , than maybe you know some nice Properties Framework for java. Because right now I wanted to use the ResourceBundle class for simple properties management in my app. But after using spring for a while this just dont seem seriously enought for me.

  Hi, I have a version number of the following form: version.release.modification where version, release and modification are either a set of digits or the '*' wildcard character. Additionally, any of these numbers (and any preceding .) may be missing. So the following are valid and parse as: 1.23.456 = version 1, release 23, modification 456 1.23 = version 1, release 23, any modification 1.23.* = version 1, release 23, any modification 1.* = version 1, any release, any modification 1 = version 1, any release, any modification * = any version, any release, any modification But these are not valid: *.12 *123.1 12* 12.*.34 Can anyone provide me a not-too-complex regex to validate and retrieve the release, version and modification numbers?
