• Does a modern PC require a graphics card to run?

  As I can remember, on old systems (Pentium II or III) it was not possible to boot and run the PC if the graphics card was missing (AGP cards were used in those days). Many years from then, I'm using motherboards with integrated graphics and I have no experience related to this subject, the "graphics card" always was present. Currently I intend to build a home/private "server" for my purposes and most of the motherboards I want to buy have no integrated graphics (AMD 870 or 970). I can take a normal graphics card from my firends for a few hours/days and use it when installing the necessary software. The question is: can I boot and run the PC without problems after I install everything I need and the graphics card is removed? if a general answer cannot be given, at least some examples of manufacturers/MB series/MB models will be helpfull I think it's obvious, but for completeness: I mean cheap desktop components, not real servers.

• Survive a Software Audit

  I received a letter from Autodesk asking for a "License Assessment". I understand it as a software audit. They plan to do it remotely. The thing is, I'm a freelancer, I don't use any Software Asset Mangment software, and I just recently swap out my hard drive for a new one, and did a complete clean install, and then I received this request from Autodesk. There is almost nothing on my hard drive now. What do software auditors do when they experience this? Will they (are they allowed) to contact my clients (that info is all over the web..) to get information since they found nothing here?

• Couchdb failing test suite on Linux

  Hi I've been trying to install CouchDB on my webfusion virtual server. I followed the latest instructions from the webfusion forum (see: http://forum.webfaction.com/viewtopic.php?id=2355 ) and it runs (just) Futon is very sluggish and I get 502 errors. Anyway when I run the test suite it fails on multiple tests. Webfaction support have been great but don't have erlang experience to interpret the error logs. Can anyone help me know what might be wrong? Test suite result: basics, all_docs, attachments, attachments_multipart, attachment_names, compact, config, conflicts, delayed_commits, design_docs, design_options all the errors are: Exception raised: {"error":"unknown","reason":"\u000d\u000a502 Bad Gateway\u000d\u000a\u000d\u000a<\h1502 Bad Gateway\u000d\u000a nginx\u000d\u000a\u000d\u000a\u000d\u000a"} except for 'compact; which also has: Assertion failed: xhr.responseText == "This is a base64 encoded text" Assertion failed: xhr.getResponseHeader("Content-Type") == "text/plain" I'm stumped. • Started an application through SSH, command line now gone, what happens next?

  Context: This is a very basic question Using Putty and SSH for the first time to do some serious server setup and run into the situation where I have started a process that I do not want to stop. The process is the gunicorn WSGI HTTP Server (running on Centos 6.3). The command I used to start the process is (as per their Quick Start): gunicorn -w 4 myapp:app At this point in the work session, I have lost the command prompt. This must be such a non-issue that it doesn't even enter into an experienced user's consciousness. But unfortunately at my level of experience, I am left with several fundamental questions: Does the fact that I have lost the command prompt mean that the process is still running? How do I get back to the command prompt without killing the process? How do I come back and monitor the process later? How do I eventually kill the process? Any help is appreciated, thanks so much!

• Disable address bar in Internet Explorer 9

  I'm trying to disable the address bar in IE9. I've done a significant amount of searching on this and just can't seem to find a way to make it happen. A lot of web resources discuss how to do it in IE8, but not IE9. The reason you might ask? I have an application being hosted in a remote desktop farm that links to web pages outside of the application into Internet Explorer. I need to ensure users are limited to just going to the pages the program pushes them to. I realize I could use a proxy server to limit where they can go, but I'm trying to find a really simple way to just disable the address bar instead. I can't use Kiosk mode because it puts the browser into full screen mode. This won't work for my situation as I need to give users what appears to be a regular browsing experience without an address bar.

• zune - how do i make the PC zune download a movie, not stream it?

  As the title suggests - I have bought a tv show series season on PC Zune. My gf watched the show, and now i'd like to be able to watch the show too. The catch - i'm going to go overseas on a trip soon, and i'd like to be able to watch the show from outside the US. Given that Zune won't let me stream things overseas (past experience, anyway), I would like to download the show to my computer and watch it that way. The problem is that although the full season has been "watched" it appears it was only streamed, not downloaded. Or rather, that one episode was downloaded, and the rest streamed. I bought a season pass (so all the episodes at once) and the show was bought, not rented. How do i make Zune download, not stream, a show?

• Debian: Give users permission

  I have a www-data that was automatically set up when I installed Apache. I have a ftpuser that I configured myself to use with ProFTPd. I use a MySQL database with users that use this user to log on. The problem is that Apache with PHP is working as it should, but I cannot add files with FTP. I tried to do chmod 777 mysite.com, and it worked, but now Apache gave me a 500 internal error. I suppose chmod isn't the correct way to go. I deleted my folder and made a new one. How can I give ftpuser permissions to read and write, while www-data should not loose its permissions. I don't have much experience with Linux command line. Thanks!

• sql server: losing identity column on export/import

  Recently I started dealing with SQL Server, my previous experience was in MS-Access. When I'm doing an import/export of a db, from the server to my computer or even in the server, all column with primary key loose the key. Identity is set to false and even bit is not set to the default. How can I can I use an import/export job to make an exact copy of the db and its data? I don't want to have to perform a backup and restore every time I want the same db somewhere else, for another project, etc. I have read about "edit mapping" and the checkbox but that did not helped with the identity specification... and what about the primary key of the tables and the rest of the things?

• Router for Infrastructure Network

  We have an HPC operation that down the years has grown to several racks of gear at three sites, hooked up via Gigabit fiber and Catalyst 2960s (we control the links and switches). Thus far all machines have been on a flat RCF1918 10/8 but we are looking to segment the network in order to streamline matters for iSCSI and generally keep infrastructure equipment away from our end-users. We have now reached a point where we need to consider introducing VLANs for specific subnets and are wondering if it would be worthwhile in the longer run to acquire a small router to keep to keep track of all this stuff and cut down on the complexity of netmasks and routes on host machines, etc. Has anyone here had a similar experience? Suggestions as to suitable equipment would be welcome.

• how to actually install PHP etc on a windows 2003 server

  We're just purchasing a dedicated windows 2003 server (in fact I think it's a VPS) How do we actually go about installing software on to it? Simply searching for "installing PHP5 on windows server" just produces material about installing it as if one had access to the computer with a keyboard and mouse. Am I being thick? I've had experience managing a linux server before but that had everything pre-configured and we accessed it via Web Hosting Manager. I don't get the actual concept of connecting to a remote PC and...downloading files? If there's any good books available please point me in the right direction.

  Recently I wanted to create a bootable USB of Linux mint. I found that there was a lot of conflicting advice/experience about whether the 'dd' command could be used to create a bootable USB. I decided to download an ISO and try. While dd definitely put the image on the USB stick it was not bootable. So my question is what is the magic ingredient that will make this work or why has this approach persisted if it does not work? • Can a RAID disk setup crash if only 1 hard disk fails?

  I am a web developer. I have not much experience in hardware. For this reason, I use managed servers. This morning, one of the drives in our setup failed. However, the full site went down. I asked my web host what happened and he replied that the hard disk failed in such a way that the RAID controller couldn't work properly. Do you guys ever seen that before? Is it possible?   Every morning I receive an automatically generated e-mail from a server, it includes a spreadsheet attachment. I made a rule in outlook that captures these emails. Now, I would like to make a macro to rename the attached file (. Xls) to =today() and saves it in a folder on a network drive. This macro must run every weekday at 8:00. I've made a lot of VBA in Excel, but have no experience in outlook. Might this be possible? And does anyone know how to do it? Kind regards Staal

• How to maintain VPS server?

  Assuming I have no experience in running them, what would be called a good maintenance routine for a VPS server running mail server and LAMP with a couple of sites. I've got one for quite a while now, but was doing what I feel is right without any guidance. It's ubuntu server and the only thing I do is ssh in there once a month and apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. Last year it suggested to update the distro, which I did. Waded through a bunch of diffs, broke mail server in the process and fixed it later on. So it turned out fine. Was this a right thing to do or should I stick with the old version just updating the packages? Is there a difference in the routine if it will be Fedora?

• Our company has 100,000s+ photos, how to store and browse/find these efficiently?

  We currently store our photos in a structure like this: folder\1\10000 - 19999.JPG|ORF|TIF (10 000 files) folder\2\20000 - 29999.JPG|ORF|TIF (10 000 files) etc... They are stored on 4 different 2TB D-link NASes attached and shared on our office network (\\nas1, \\nas2, and so on...) Problems: 1) When a client (Windows only, Vista and 7) wishes to browse the let's say \\nas1\folder\1\ folder, performance is quite poor. A problem. List takes a long time to generate in explorer window. Even with icons turned off. 2) Initial access to the NAS itself is sometimes slow. Problem. SAN disks too expensive for us. Even with iSCSI interface/switch technology. I've read a lot of tech pages saying that storing 100 000+ files in one single folder shouldn't be a problem. But we don't dare go there now that we experience problems on a 10K level. All input greatly appreciated, /T

• Accessing large log files on a unix machine with textpad

  Hi, I'm interested to access large log files on a unix server with textpad. (textpad for history reasons, i personally prefer ofcourse less awk grep etc) but I have many personal who rather be using textpad they have years of experience with it and can tweak it to do whatever they want. The problem is that if i connect for example with winscp to get the log files to textpad it first fetches the full log and user needs to wait and it bloats etc. I would rather the textpad to somehow access the unix machine and get only the relevant segment of the log file (large log files could be GB) anyone knows how can this be achieved?

  Basically I want to create a file which will automatically install a bunch of files without having to manually install each of them (i.e. Flash, Adobe Reader, MS Office, etc.). I'm guessing the easiest way to do this would be to create a batch file but I don't have much experience with the scripting side of things. I remember seeing a website at one point that would do this sort of thing for you but I'm not sure if that could be used offline or not. For example: My setup (usual Apache server - tomcat server) and I have two domains configured using virtual hosts directive in httpd.conf www.domain-one.com www.domain-two.com If tomcat is down, I wish to display different 503 error page for two different domains. Also, should the User name be my email or something else? • FreeBSD Jail own network stack with vimage

  I want to throw all services from the host system and put them in jails. Unfortunatly this doesn't work for file sharing (e.g. nfsd) because the jails don't have there own network stack by default. I know read something about vimage which would solve this issue.   I want to learn to use the command prompt better on Windows to have more control over what I do and just for the learning experience. The main annoyance I have right now is all of the typing. If I want to perform an operation on a file with a large path I'm sitting there typing it out for a minute at least, and if I make a mistake I have to press the up arrow key and scroll through the entire thing and find what I did wrong. • How to "get" a reliable parallel port on a laptop without a PCMCIA slot?

  Usb-Parallel port (for an old, but reliable matrix printer that has its special use) connections (cables) are unreliable. They sometimes work, sometimes don't - and since I installed Windows 7 I can't get neither of my old ones to work properly. PCMCIA is usually considered (and it is) a much more reliable solution, but unfortunatelly, none of my new laptops has a PCMCIA slot. So, all ideas are welcomed. What should I do? I'm open to all suggestions as long as you have some experience that they work more reliably than USB-Parallel cables and their wicked drivers.

• Asus V1S screen dimming randomly

  I have an Asus V1V, which is the same as the Asus V1S except for the video card. I have a problem where the screen will randomly lose brightness or flicker between being lit and not lit. The picture below is of the left hinge, with the cover removed. Pressing one of these cables affects this behaviour, and pressing it in place will resolve the issue for a few hours. My guess means the inverter cable is damaged, based on previous experience. As the picture shows, there are two cables, an LCD cable and what I assume is an inverter cable. I purchased an LCD cable for my model of laptop, but have been unable to find an inverter cable. It seems not to exist. I would like some input on if an inverter cable actually exists, if it is likely the problem, or solutions in general to resolve this problem permanently.

• Hipchat 2.2.1080 on ubuntu 64bit 12.04 flashes webcam on startup

  I recently updated to hipchat version 2.2.1080 and everytime I start it up it flashes the webcam. By this, I mean the light on my cam flashes. It flashes only for a second then turns off. Does anyone experience this? Does anyone know why this happens? It is rather unerving because other applications that support video chat, like skype, do no such thing.
