• New Xming Windows Doesn't Grab Focus

  I do my day-to-day work on Windows 7 (no, that's not going to change) and often need to work with Linux running on Parallels. Switching between Windows and Linux desktops is a pain, so I've installed Cygwin+Xming (less complicated than CygwinX). I open a Cygwin command line using mintty, then do ssh -Y to get a Linux command line. Doing "vim" on the Linux command line causes the vim window to appear on my Windows desktop. This is great, except that the new vim window doesn't automatically grab the focus, which stays with the mintty window. Years of habit cause me to start typing immediately without clicking on the new window. Having to switch manually is very jarring. Any way to make it automatic?

• Lucene and .NET Part I

  I’ve playing around with Lucene.NET and trying to get a feeling of what was required to develop and implement a full business application using it. As you would imagine, many things are required for you to implement a robust solution for indexing content and searching it afterwards. Lucene is a great and robust solution for indexing content. It offers fast and performance enhanced search engine library available in Java and .NET. You will want to use this library in many particular scenarios: In Windows Azure, to support Full Text Search (a functionality not currently supported by SQL Azure) When storing files outside or not managed by your database (like in large document storage solutions that uses File System) When Full Text Search is not really what you need Lucene is more than a Full Text Search solution. It has several analyzers that let you process and search content in different ways (decomposing sentences, deriving words, removing articles, etc.). When deciding to implement indexing using Lucene, you will need to take into account the following: How content is to be indexed by Lucene and when. Using a service that runs after a specific interval Immediately when content changes When content is to available for searching / Availability of indexed content (as in real time content search) Immediately when content changes = near real time searching After a few minutes.. Ease of maintainability and development Some Technical Concerns.. When indexing content, indexes are locked for writing operations by the Index Writer. This means that Lucene is best designed to index content using single writer approach. When searching, Index Readers take a snapshot of indexes. This has the following implications: Setting up an index reader is a costly task. Your are not supposed to create one for each query or search. A good practice is to create readers and reuse them for several searches. The latter means that even when the content gets updated, you wont be able to see the changes. You will need to recycle the reader. In the second part of this post we will review some alternatives and design considerations.

  On some random afternoon I figured I could do better than the boring yellow icon; After a vain attempt at trying to change it to no avail I realised that now whenever I open a folder it opens in a "search" window. This happened because when I go to the "(file folder)" type, the only option in there is "find" that is not supposed to be the default; upon saving this form XP tries to do me a favour and sets this as the new default. Now whenever I try to click a folder it opens the search window. great.

• Bing brings Twitter aggregation to search results

  I read with interest today a post on the Bing blog Get the Latest on Twitter with Bing Social Search which describes how tweets are soon going to show up in Bing search results. On the surface that isn’t very interesting, Google has been doing this for a while, but of particular interest to myself was the following screenshot: We can see at the bottom of a search result for “TMZ” that Bing is showing us the most popular TMZ stories as determined by the number of tweets that contain links to them. This is great. Bing are applying a principle that those of us in the Business Intelligence (BI) trade have known for ages: a piece of data in isolation is not very interesting but when you aggregate a lot of that data you find the trends that actually matter and when you surface that data in a meaningful way then people can derive real value from it. That sounds obvious but this new Bing feature is the first time I have seen the principle applied in a useful way to tweets and I applaud them for that; its certainly a lot more useful than the pointless constant tweet scroll that you see on Google. • Attend my GTC sessions

  The last GTC conference in the US was 2 years ago and I was there as an attendee. You may recall from that blog post that we were running UX studies at the time. It really feels great 2 years later, to be back at GTC presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress that includes input from those early studies. If you are attending GTC (in person or virtually later), be sure to watch my two-part session. Part 1 is S0242 on Wednesday 5pm and part 2 is S0244 on Thursday 10am. Here is the shared abstract for both parts: Harnessing GPU Compute with C++ AMP C++ AMP is an open specification for taking advantage of accelerators like the GPU. In this session we will explore the C++ AMP implementation in Microsoft Visual Studio 11 Beta. After a quick overview of the technology understanding its goals and its differentiation compared with other approaches, we will dive into the programming model and its modern C++ API. This is a code heavy, interactive, two-part session, where every part of the library will be explained. • MS Word 2007 Mail Merge fails on ZIP codes with leading Zeros (eg. 01234)

  I have an Excel Spreadsheet with a ZIP code column. For some dumb reason the original spreadsheet I got had all the zip codes stored as numbers, so a ZIP code like 01234 was stored as 1234. Easy to fix with "Format Column" as "Special = ZIP Code". All values like 1234, show up as 01234. Great! When I import it into Word via Mail Merge (to print address labels), the ZIP codes on all the addresses starting with a leading zero (like 01234) revert to their old form (1234). How do I fix this?

• FTP upload stalls at same point every time on FileZilla

  On two different FTP accounts, I am having problems uploading files. I can login and see the contents of the dir, and start an upload. Using Filezilla the transfer seems to always stall at either 0.9% or 1.2% (always those two numbers) and may simply hang, or keep restarting and then again stop at the same point. WindowsXP FTP is not great but I get similar types of problems there... it starts uploading and after a short while I get a timeout error. FTP used to work fine, and I don't know if it's these accounts in particular (both have the same service provider although purchased on opposite sides of the world) or if "FTP is broken on my PC"... can that even happen?!

• Problem running mercurial against symlinked .hgrc file under Cygwin/Windows 7

  This is not a question about handling symlinks in the mercurial repository. I have this setup at work where I keep my dotfiles in a separate directory (.configuration) that I can use to synch my dotfiles between cygwin/windows and linux, then use symlinks instead of dotfiles in the home directory. So, I have the symlink ~/.hgrc -> .configuration/.hgrc in my home directory. After setting this up, mercurial complains thus: $ hg st hg: config error at C:\Users\aaf\.hgrc:1: '!<symlink>ÿþ.configuration/.hgrc' Removing the symlink and replacing it with the actual file works, so the contents of the .hgrc file are not at fault. I can live with that, I suppose, but I'd like to know why this happens. All other tools I've configured the same way work great with symlinked dotfiles.

• How can I track down what part of pfsense is blocking website access?

  I've got a PFSense firewall/gateway on our network. Everything works great except for the fact that I cannot access one specific website. Pfsense is running the following packages Country Block LightSquid nmap notes squid squidGuard Strikeback I can access every single website I've ever tried aside from one that we need for business use (http://bridalnetwork.ca) here's the traceroute frodo:~ chase$ traceroute bridalnetwork.ca traceroute to bridalnetwork.ca (192.197.103.73), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 rohan (192.168.5.1) 6.618 ms 1.662 ms 9.207 ms 2 * * * 3 * * rohan (192.168.5.1) 7.225 ms !H 4 rohan (192.168.5.1) 5.314 ms !H 5.701 ms !H 7.573 ms !H frodo:~ chase$ How can I figure out what the reason behind the blockage is? note: this has been tested on every computer on the network with the same results. ps: the pfsense box is 'rohan' (192.168.5.1) Here's what I get with Squid enabled and here's what I get with Squid disabled

• Smart card authentication to a Cisco switch?

  We have our Cisco network devices configured to authenticate network administrators using their domain accounts via RADIUS running on a Windows 2008R2 server with the network protection role. This works great for logging into the switch via SSH when configuring the devices. We are now in the beginning stages of deploying smart cards for logins. Does anyone know of a way to login to a Cisco switch using a smart card instead of a domain username and password? The SSH client we are using is Putty. Workstations are Windows 7. RADIUS is running on Windows 2008R2. We are running our own certificate authority on Windows 2008; network is not connected to the Internet. We prefer to not have to purchase additional proprietary devices for this functionality.

  …I’m becoming more of an addict of writing about my experiences, here in Kolkata! Today we started a bit of late at around 8 AM, did our breakfast and reached in class a bit late at around 9:50 AM, and here goes the surprise…. Today we had two lectures on “Managing Self” and two lectures on “Sustainable Development and Climate Change” (SDCC). Some of us got few self discipline lessons the moment they entered class and asked to “get out” :D So frankly speaking it was a nostalgic moment, which reminded us of Collage ;) We did a FIRO-B test as and got very good tips on managing ourselves and differentiate between “manager” and “leader” After the lunch we had our session on SDCC, in which the prof started by explaining “Credit Crisis”, and moved on to Sustainable Development and few great examples from industry and life~! After the class we went for shopping at Garihat Market, we ate Pani Puri and Moodi :P ..one more surprise…my room got flooded with lot of my new ePBM friends to take the copy of the pictures and we did lot of chit chat around anything and everything :D …so far so good…it’s an amazing experience for me and hopefully for others….who came out of their daily chores and went back to the nostalgic lanes of friendship, learning and most importantly “Happyness” ~~~ Cheers, ram :) EPBM 14 pics : http://epbm14.shutterfly.com/pictures

• Dryad and DryadLINQ from MSR

  Microsoft Research (MSR) researches technologies, incubates projects which many times result in technology that looks like a ready-to-use product (but it is important to understand that these are not the same as products built by the various… actual product teams here at Microsoft). A very popular MSR project has been DryadLINQ, which itself builds on Dryad. To learn more follow the project pages I just linked to and I also recommend this 1-hour channel 9 video. If you only have 3 minutes, watch this great elevator pitch instead. You can also stay tuned on the official blog, which includes a post that refers to internal adoption e.g by Bing, a quick DryadLINQ code example, and some history on how DryadLINQ generalizes the MapReduce pattern and makes it accessible to regular programmers (see this post and that post). Essentially, the DryadLINQ framework (building on the Dryad runtime) allows developers to re-use their LINQ skills for creating/generating programs that process large multi-gigabyte/terabyte datasets across 100s-1000s of machines. One way to think about it is that just as Parallel LINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple cores from a single process on a single machine, DryadLINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple machines for their data parallel algorithms. In the former scenario the motivation was speed of execution, in the latter it is speed of execution AND processing large datasets that simply don't fit on a single machine. Whenever I hear about execution of parallel code on multiple machines on the Microsoft platform, I immediately think of Windows HPC Server. • Wire Framing WP7 Apps With Cacoo

  While looking for a free alternative to Sketchflow I landed on the Cacoo web site.  Any developer who decides to use the free Visual Studio tools may find themselves doing the same search.  The base functionality of Cacoo is free although there are certain features that have fees attached to them such as extended stencils and templates. Cacoo doesn’t seem to have a template for WP7.  It does have templates for iOS and Android development so I started with the Android template and started modidfying it for WP7.  Funny thing is since Android has the same hardware vendors as Windows Phone the basic frame looks just right (I would swear I was looking at my Samsung Focus). Below is the start of a new mockup for the user group that I help run. I found that while Cacoo doesn’t have all the icons I need I am able to insert them from the Windows Phone Toolkit folder.  If I put them off to the side as you can see above.  I can simply copy and paste them into the appropriate place as needed.  Beyond that I have customized the main frame frame so I can have my base to work from.  In the future I intend to create this as a stencil and if it looks good enough I would consider making it public. My use of this product is still in it’s early phase, but it seems like a great way to start.  Maybe if you use this to get going you can earn enough from your resulting apps to pay for something with more bells and whistles in the future. del.icio.us Tags: WP7,Windows Phone 7 development,design,Cacoo,wire frame

• DC Comics Identifies Krypton on the Star Map

  This week Action Comics Superman #14 hits the stands and DC comics reveals the actual location of Kyrpton, delivered by none other than beloved astrophysicist Neil Tyson. Phil Plait at Bad Astronomy reports on the resolution of fans’ long standing curiosity about the location of Krypton: Well, that’s about to change. DC comics is releasing a new book this week – Action Comics Superman #14 – that finally reveals the answer to this stellar question. And they picked a special guest to reveal it: my old friend Neil Tyson. Actually, Neil did more than just appear in the comic: he was approached by DC to find a good star to fit the story. Red supergiants don’t work; they explode as supernovae when they are too young to have an advanced civilization rise on any orbiting planets. Red giants aren’t a great fit either; they can be old, but none is at the right distance to match the storyline. It would have to be a red dwarf: there are lots of them, they can be very old, and some are close enough to fit the plot. I won’t keep you in suspense: the star is LHS 2520, a red dwarf in the southern constellation of Corvus (at the center of the picture here). It’s an M3.5 dwarf, meaning it has about a quarter of the Sun’s mass, a third its diameter, roughly half the Sun’s temperature, and a luminosity of a mere 1% of our Sun’s. • 11gr2 DataGuard: Restarting DUPLICATE After a Failure

  One of the great new features that comes in very handy when databases get larger and larger these days is RMAN's capability to duplicate from an active database and even restart a duplicate when it fails. Imagine yourself the problem I had lately; I used the duplicate from active database feature and had to wait for an hour or 6 before all datafiles where transferred.At the end of the process some error occurred because of the syntax. While this error was easily to solve I was afraid I had to redo the complete procedure and transfer the 2.5 TB again. Well, 11gr2 RMAN surprised when I re-ran my command with the following output: Using previous duplicated file +DATA/fin2prod/datafile/users.2968.719237649 for datafile 12 with checkpoint SCN of 183289288148 Using previous duplicated file +DATA/fin2prod/datafile/users.2703.719237975 for datafile 13 with checkpoint SCN of 183289295823 Above I only show a small snippet, but what happend is that RMAN smartly skipped all files that where already transferred ! The documentation says this: RMAN automatically optimizes a DUPLICATE command that is a repeat of a previously failed DUPLICATE command. The repeat DUPLICATE command notices which datafiles were successfully copied earlier and does not copy them again. This applies to all forms of duplication, whether they are backup-based (with and without a target connection) or active database duplication. The automatic optimization of the DUPLICATE command can be especially useful when a failure occurs during the duplication of very large databases. If a DUPLICATE operation fails, you need only run the DUPLICATE again, using the same parameters contained in the original DUPLICATE command. Please see chapter 23 of the 11g Release 2 Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide for more details. B.w.t. be very careful with the duplicate command.   Question: Can I deploy BES and BES Express with Exchange 2010? Any tips for doing this if possible? Background: We have a lot of users with personal BlackBerry's and we would like to allow them to start using their devices for receviing corporate email. We don't need full BES features for these users, just the ability to enforce passwords and remotely wipe. Plus users have never wanted to upgrade their data plans to the more expensive BES plans. So BES Express is a great fit. We already have an existing BES, for corporate owned BB's. We want to keep this as is allows us to enforce several policies, not available on BES Express.

• Mac Mini's internet very slow, every other device fine (PC, iPhone, Xbox 360)

  I recently haven't used my Mac Mini for about 5 days (however it was left on). I seem to be able to connect and get great download / upload speeds through my PC, Xbox 360, iPhone and parents' laptop. However, my Mac Mini is very slow. OS X's Mail.app is downloading mail at 0.4kbps and then dropping to 0. Skype file transfers are doing the same. Browsing the net is a terrible experience. It is taking 30 seconds or more to download basic pages. All of my devices connect wirelessly to a Netgear router / modem. I have tried giving the Mac Mini a manual IP, and renew DHCP lease, as well as flush DNS in Terminal. I have also rebooted the router / modem twice, and the Mac Mini twice. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks

• how do I match movement of an object from 2d video into a 3d package ?

  I'm trying to add objects in a 3d package(Blender) using recorded footage. I've played with Icarus and it's great to capture the camera movement. Also the Blender 2.41 importer script works in Blender 2.49 as well. The problem is I can't seem to get 3d coordinates for objects. I have tried Autodesk(RealVIZ) MatchMover 2011 and gone through the tutorials. Tutorial 3 shows how to link a vertex from a 3d mesh to a 2d trackpoint, but the setup is for camera movement. Tutorial 4 goes into Motion capture, but it uses 2 videos of the same motion taken with 2 cameras from different viewpoints. I've tried to bypass that using the same footage twice, but that failed, as the 3d coordinate system ends up messed up. What software do you recommend for this (mapping 3d coordinates to 2d tracked points and importing them into a 3d package) ? What is the recommended technique ? Any good examples out there ?
