• KDE not loading without nomode tag in grub and bad resolution [migrated]

  I recently installed Linux Mint 13 KDE but it's not working fine. At first I had to use failsafe mode to boot because normal boot takes to a textual login. If I use normal boot and text login I'm not able to run KDE nor with kdm start neither with startx. kdm says that's already running. Instead X is not able to run because can't connect Xserver to display. If I stop kdm and starx again doesn't change anything. Now I edited the grub to load in nomode. In that way KDE loads but resolution is wrong and xrandr doesn't help, because if I do this: cvt 1366 768 it changes it to 1368: # 1368x768 59.88 Hz (CVT) hsync: 47.79 kHz; pclk: 85.25 MHz Modeline "1368x768_60.00" 85.25 1368 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync I also installed bumblebee and nvidia drivers because of optimus technology.. It worked just to have fun with glxspheres but there isn't any gain on KDE.. • ubuntu 12.04 not responding after software update

  Yesterday, I did a software update and since then the system became unusable. To be more precise, I login and then I see only the background image without any bars, images etc.. This happened after updating the system. Please find here the relevant part /var/log/apt/history.log. I'm running 64 bit 12.04 distribution on nVidia. The 2-3 first restarts after the upgrade it was complaining about compiz/unity crashes and then the situation is as described above. I would be the most grateful of you could help me on this. • Open source vs commercial game engines

  How commercial game accomplsih stunnning graphics with smooth game play? I am a huge die hard fan and follower of GNU Stallman and his philosophies and other Libre people Cmon how wud I miss Linus. but I got to admit commercial games does excellent jobs. One such good example is Assasin's Creed from Ubisoft. It has good quality graphcis and plays smoothly in my Dual core CPU with Nvidia Geforce 8400ES. Rockstar GTA4 has awesome graphcis but it's slower than AC considering the graphics quality tradeoff. Age of Empires from Ensemble studios, does include Massive crowd AI simulation, yet it plays so smoothly with eyecandy graphics and very large weapon sets and different techtree elements on the other hand. Open source games like Glest, 0A.D(still in alpha :) are not so smooth even though they have very restricted abilities? Coming to question: how do game companies achieve such optmizations, or the open source community is not doing optimizations, or there are any propriarity technological elements that benefits only the companies exists huh?? e.g the OpenSubDiv from Pixar just released open to community?? something like that. and why it is hard to implement optimizations? are there any legal restrictions???

• Ubuntu 12.04.2 won't boot after bumblebee instalation

  First of all sorry for my English, it's not my first language. Here is what I have done: I had a working ubuntu 12.04 with all updates and working bumblebee, so I could do optirun command and battery life was better than without bumblebee. Than I decided to reinstall both my systems installed windows 7 and ubuntu. Reinstalled Windows 7 all working as expected, than on other partition installed ubuntu 12.04. All worked perfectly. Than I installed bumblebee according to the procedure written here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee same steps that I used before. But now after I install drivers and do all written in procedure and I reboot my notebook system won't boot, it is simply stuck at black screen after short showing of start screen. I reinstalled ubuntu many times already and tried everthing, but when I try install nvidia drivers it won't boot after shutting down notebook and only thing I can do is reinstalling system. I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 and processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3210M CPU and graphic cards are Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia geforce gt630m After clean install without bumblebee, terminal command lspci| grep VGA is showing: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0de9 (rev a1) Can you suggest a sollution??   I'm trying to compile using the llvm-3.1 package. I'm running 12.04 x64 (3.2.0-26 kernel) && 12.10 (3.5.0-4) x64 backported llvm-3.1 from quantal, then debian experimental. • Writing files in a sub folder of the web folder (apache security)

  I need to save session data for a dynamic web page script by writing to file. I have two questions: Are there any security preferences as to whether to save the data UNDER the web folder, or OUTSIDE the web folder? I attempted to write to the folder an (unsuprisingly), I had a 'file permission refused' type error. Should I set the folder ownership to the apache user (600, 640 or 644?) [[Edit]] core <- 'OUTSIDE' web folder (php script live here) data <- 'OUTSIDE' web folder (session data and other misc data resides here) web <- web root folder js <- any folder below is 'INSIDE' the web folder css html For example, in a php script (i.e. a dynamic PHP page), I can attempt to write to a file using something like fput('../data',data) yet (as I understand it) ../data should not be accessible - for security reasons. Could someone please provide a simple example that shows how to provide access to ../data/ in the example given above?. What are the actual SPECIFIC steps required? BTW, I am running on a LAMP stack.

• IOS OpenGl transparency performance issue

  I have built a game in Unity that uses OpenGL ES 1.1 for IOS. I have a nice constant frame rate of 30 until i place a semi transparent texture over the top on my entire scene. I expect the drop in frames is due to the blending overhead with sorting the frame buffer. On 4s and 3gs the frames stay at 30 but on the iPhone 4 the frame rate drops to 15-20. Probably due to the extra pixels in the retina compared to the 3gs and smaller cpu/gpu compared to the 4s. I would like to know if there is anything i can do to try and increase the frame rate when a transparent texture is rendered on top of the entire scene. Please not the the transparent texture overlay is a core part of the game and i can't disable anything else in the scene to speed things up. If its guaranteed to make a difference I guess I can switch to OpenGl ES 2.0 and write the shaders but i would prefer not to as i need to target older devices. I should add that the depth buffer is disabled and I'm blending using SrcAlpha One. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Cheers

• After force-installing a 32-bit deb failed, how can I install the 64-bit version?

  I tried to dpkg -i --force-architecture google-earth-stable_i386.deb and it failed. But now when I try to install the amd64.deb it fails saying dpkg: error processing google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb (--install): google-earth-stable: 6.2.2.6613-r0 (Multi-Arch: no) is not co-installable with google-earth-stable:i386 6.2.2.6613-r0 (Multi-Arch: no) which is currently installed Errors were encountered while processing: google-earth-stable_current_amd64.deb somehow it thinks the i386 version is installed. No google-earth files or directories even exist. sudo dpkg --configure -a outputs: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of google-earth-stable:i386: google-earth-stable:i386 depends on lsb-core (= 3.2). dpkg: error processing google-earth-stable:i386 (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: google-earth-stable:i386 so it does exist in some capacity. sudo apt-get -f install does nothing out of the ordinary: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded. The weird thing is that synaptic doesn't show any google earth package available let alone installed, nothing under the broken filter either. I have also tried sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean So, my question: How can I get rid of this issue?

• Installation failed with a Blank Screen

  Blank Screen, no Fix I've tried works... Hardware conflict maybe? First I tried AMD64 Ubuntu desktop. I got into the boot screen, however selecting install returns 1-2 seconds of code then blank screen no-idle. Then I tried the alternate install. Worked, some additional software installs failed. Go to boot for first time, I see BIOS load then black/blank screen. No flicker or cursor... screen turns off. (I am also having issues installing any 64bit OS legit WIN 7 64 Ult., WinXP 64 PRO ISO, also WinXP 32 Legit, WinXP 64Pro ISO returns BSOD on install. All win 7 builds return with CD/DVD driver error. The only OS that installs is beta build 7000 win 7.) Please help! • How to start gnome-shell?

  I successfully installed the gnome 3 gnome-shell from the launchpad ppa on my fully updated Natty test system. However, nothing I tried could get it to actually run. If I selected it in the startup options, I got a plain light blue screen with absolutely nothing on it. If I tried to start it using "gnome-shell --replace", I got: gnome-shell --replace & [2] 3251 tim@nattytest:/usr/lib$ Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/gnome-shell", line 705, in normal_exit = run_shell() File "/usr/bin/gnome-shell", line 293, in run_shell if shell is None: UnboundLocalError: local variable 'shell' referenced before assignment /usr/bin/compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager. [2]+ Exit 1 gnome-shell --replace I also tried preceding that with metacity --replace, as suggested at ubuntuforums.com. But, I got the same failure. I also linked /usr/lib/libmozjs.so to /usr/lib/xulrunner-2.0b12/libmozjs.so, which did not help either. No matter what I try, I get the same error messages. Thanks.

• Crash after plugging in the Logitech H600 wireless transmitter

  I recently bought the Logitech H600 Wireless Headset. When I plug in the USB wireless transmitter, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS crashes. How does that come and what do you suggest me to do? Same problem here, as soon as the H600 headset is plugged in 12.04 crashes. • Ubuntu 13.10 Installing MariaDB

  I have tried everything to install MariaDB on this clean Ubuntu installation but I keep getting this error, Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mariadb-server : Depends: mariadb-server-5.5 (= 5.5.33a+maria-1~saucy) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I have followed this guide to try and install it, http://www.unixmen.com/install-lemp-server-nginx-mysql-mariadb-php-ubuntu-13-10-server/ And I have also followed the "official" guide on the MariaDB downloads page for 13.10 https://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/repositories/ But nothing seems to be working. Edit 1 I have tried both How do I resolve unmet dependencies? and How to install MariaDB? but it still gives me the error I posted above. It's a fresh Ubuntu install with hardly anything installed. Edit 2 All the check boxes are ticket in Updates. • Keeping multiple root directories in a single partition

  I'm working out a partition scheme for a new install. I'd like to keep the root filesystem fairly small and static, so that I can use LVM snapshots to do backups without having to allocate a ton of space for the snapshot. However, I'd also like to keep the number of total partitions small. Even with LVM, there's inevitably some wasted space and it's still annoying and vaguely dangerous to allocate more. So there seem to be a couple of different options: Have the partition that will contain bulky, variable files, like /srv, /var, and /home, be the root partition, and arrange for the core system state — /etc, /usr, /lib, etc. — to live in a second partition. These files can (I think) be backed up using a different backup scheme, and I don't think LVM snapshots will be necessary for them. The opposite: putting the big variable directories on the second partition, and having the essential system directories live on the root FS. Either of these options require that certain directories be pointers of some variety to subdirectories of a second partition. I'm aware of two different ways to do this: symlinks and bind-mounts. Is one better than the other for this purpose? Is there another option? Do any of the various Ubuntu installation media/strategies support this style of partition layout?

• how do I write a functional specification quickly and efficiently

  So I just read some fabulous articles by Joel on specs here. (Was written in 2000!!) I read all 4 parts, but Im looking for some methodical approaches to writing my specs. Im the only lonely dev, working on this fairly complicated app (or family of apps) for a very well known finance company. I've never made something this serious, I started out writing something like a bad spec, an overview of some sorts, and it has wasted a LOT of my time. Ive also made 3 mockup-kinda-thingies for my client so I have a good understanding of what they want. Also released a preview (a throw away working app with the most basic workflow), and Ive only written and tested some of the very core/base systems. I think the mistake Ive been making so far is not writing a detailed spec, so Im getting to it now. So the whole thing comprises of An MVC website (for admins & data viewing) 2 Silverlight modules (For 2 specific tasks) 1 Desktop Application Im totally short on time, resources and need to get this done quick, also, need to make sure these guys read it up equally quick and painlessly. So how do I go about it, Im looking for any tips, any real world stuff, how do you guys usually do it? Do you make a mock screenie of every dialog/form/page? Im thinking of making a dummy asp.net web forms project, then filling in html files in folders and making it look like my mvc url structure. Then having a section in the spec for the website and write up a page for every URL Ive got with a screenie. For my win forms app, Ive made somewhat of a demo Win Form project, would I then put in a dialog or stucture everything as I would in the real app and then screen shot it?

• Please recommend a patterns book for iOS development

  I've read several books on iOS development and Objective-C, however what a lot of them teach is how to work with interfaces and all contain the model inside the view controller, i.e. a UITableViewController based view will simply have an NSArray as it's model. I'm interested in what the best practices are for designing the structure of an application. Specifically I'm interested in best practices for the following: How to separate a model from the view controller. I think I know how to do this by simply replacing the NSArray style example with a specific model object, however what I do not know how to do is alert the view when the model changes. For example in .NET I would solve this by conforming to INotifyPropertyChanged and databinding, and similarly with Java I would use PropertyChangeListener. How to create a service model for my domain objects. For example I want to learn the best way to create a service for a hypothetical Widget object to manage an internal DB and also services for communicating with remote endpoints. I need to learn the best ways to do this in a way that interface components can subscribe to events such as widgetUpdated. These services should be singleton classes and some how dependency injected into model/controller objects. Books I've read so far are: Programming in Objective-C (4th Edition) Beginning iOS 5 Development: Exploring the iOS SDK The iOS 5 Developer's Cookbook: Expanded Electronic Edition: Essentials and Advanced Recipes for iOS Programmers Learn Objective-C on the Mac: For OS X and iOS I've also purchased the following updated books but not yet read them. The Core iOS 6 Developer's Cookbook (4th edition Programming in Objective-C (5th Edition) I come from a Java and C# background with 15 years experience, I understand that many of the ways I would do things in these languages may not fit to the ObjC way of developing applications. Any guidance on the topic is very much appreciated.

• Installed on a machine with EFI and after installation, it says the disk is not bootable

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and the installation runs through fine. It then says reboot, and the machine says 'inserts a boot disk' which means the hard disk isn't bootable. The primary hard disk is an EFI device, and nothing seems to work. The machine in question is an Acer Aspire M3970 desktop. Core i5 2300, with 8Gb Ram. Main boot drive is an SSD (Vertex 2E 60Gb). I am trying to install the 11.10 x64 version. The installation I have tried from CD and USB stick. It goes through the install, allows you to partition the drives then installs all the packages. At the end it goes for a reboot, and asks you to remove the installation media. The PC then restarts and says no bootable disk. I tried it many times. In the end I have installed Fedora 15 x64 which works straight away with no messing. Unless this issues is fixed I have to drop 11.10 as a viable option. From my experience F15 isn't quite as polished as Ubuntu, but in this case - it works!! Is this a widespread problem or am I unique?
