• Cyrus: authentication failure: checkpass failed

  I'm trying to get Cyrus IMAP (v 2.2 on Ubuntu 9.04) setup and working, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting the login working correctly. I've created a mailbox for my test user "nrahl": cm user/nrahl and then created a password: $ saslpasswd2 nrahl I'm attempting to connect to the mailbox using Thunderbird. I'm using the machine's LAN IP address as the host, and "nrahl" as the username. It connects to the server and prompts me for the password. • crontab not executing all lines

  I have a sudo crontab like this to sync time: # m h dom mow dow command 0 6 * * * ntpdate 10.3.3.3 >> /var/mylog/ntp.log 0 7 * * * /var/mylog/backup.sh >> /var/mylog/backup.log The problem I am having is that the first line (ntpdate) never seems to execute. If I run it manually with sudo that line works. cron does run the backup.sh at the 7, but it never executes then ntp sync at 6. The syslog doesn't seem to show anything. System is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

• ubuntu 12.04 not responding after software update

  Yesterday, I did a software update and since then the system became unusable. To be more precise, I login and then I see only the background image without any bars, images etc.. This happened after updating the system. Please find here the relevant part /var/log/apt/history.log. I'm running 64 bit 12.04 distribution on nVidia. The 2-3 first restarts after the upgrade it was complaining about compiz/unity crashes and then the situation is as described above. I would be the most grateful of you could help me on this. • Management Reporter Installation – Lessons Learned Part II - Dynamics GP

  After feeling pretty good about my deployment skills of Management Reporter for Dynamics GP a few weeks ago, I ran into two additional lessons learned that I wanted to share. First, on another new deployment, I got the error shown below which says “An error occurred while creating the database.  View the installation log for additional information.”  This problem initially pointed me to KB 2406948 which did not provide resolution. After several hours of troubleshooting, I found there is an issue if the defaults database locations in SQL Server are set to the root of a drive. You will want to set the default to something like the following to get it installed; C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA.  My default database locations for the data and log files were indeed sitting on the H:\ and I:\ drives. To change this property in your SQL Server Instance you need to open SQL Server Management Studio, right click on the server, and choose properties and then database settings. When I initially got the error, I briefly considered creating the ManagementReporter database by hand, but experience tells me that would have created more headaches down the road. The second problem I ran into with this particular deployment of Management Reporter happened when I started the FRx conversion utility.  The errors reads “The ‘Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0’ provider is not registered on the local machine. I had a suspicion that this error was related to the fact FRx uses outdated technology and I happened to be on a new install of Server 2008 R2.  A knowledge base search quickly pointed me to KB 2102486. • Hard drive failure during a move

  So, odd situation here... I shipped a computer via UPS. The computer was well protected, wrapped in multiple layers of padding and tightly packed to minimize any chance of damage. The package arrived in great condition, no damage to the box at all - it looks like it was handled with utmost care. (And given it was shipped 2nd day express and cost $200 to ship, it had better have been) However, upon unpacking it and turning it on... suddenly the computer is telling us there is no boot device. I've checked everything I can think of and everything points to complete and utter hard drive failure. So - what on earth could cause hard drive failure during shipping?

• Website requests not reaching IIS?

  To start off with a confession, I am not a server admin - just a developer tasked with getting to the root of a problem. Please be gentle! I have an intranet ASP.NET website running in IIS on a virtual machine. The website is not accessed very often (the last IIS log file was modified nearly six months ago). Both the IP address and Host header value are now failing to return the website, and the IIS log still doesn't show any more recent activity. The virtual machine was moved to a different physical location a few months ago, and the IP address for it has changed. Could this be what has broken access to the site? What else should I be checking to solve this? I don't have totally unrestricted access to the building's network settings, structures, etc. I would be grateful for any advice, even if I can't use it myself it'll improve my knowledge of what's going on behind the scenes!

• Filemaker 10 Advanced sending email via script & SMTP

  We are using a windows server box to run the databases but we have found via the headers that the emails are send from the local workstation. We have moved to a new email system and have set up a local linux server to securely send email out of our network to devices that do not support new protocols and encryption. But once we set up the script in filemaker 10 advanced (the local machine os x) we set it to the ip of our local box with no authentication but it does not send out an email. It creates a connection we see in the logs on the linux box but nothing more, additionally you can start a telnet connection with no issues. We have also made sure that there are no additional issue that we can see in our firewall policies. Any ideas where we should start? Does Filemaker 10 advanced log errors anywhere because I could not find any log files.

Can I fool the system into using that file (if I copied it back into the restore point folder)? • keyboard mappings are totally screwed after updating to kde4

  I recently upgraded from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4, and I have been having weird issues with my keyboard. In one of the virtual consoles e.g. when I press ctrl + alt 1 , I can type perfectly, but in KDE, several of the number keys don't work, the left and right arrows don't work either. I'm slowly beginning to wade through the mountains of documentation about the X keyboard model, but there has to be a better way. Does anyone no what it is? Edit: 1234567890 ! after deleting the entire .kde folder. but only until I change the Keyboard settings from the "system settings" applet, then its hosed full time. Regardless of what I set the settings too. (restore to default settings doesn't) 2nd Edit: I'm using Gentoo AMD64, I was upgrading from KDE 3.5 KDE 4.2. I think I had manual settings before, although I didn't change anything. I was originally running KDE without HAL until that stop working a year or so ago. • Hanging page loads every n loads

  Hi Guys I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input. Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either) Thanks in advance!

• Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

  I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging. • Sporadic '.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored' going from OSX -> Linux

  Every now and then when users SSH from their OS X (Snow Leopard) workstation to one of our Linux hosts they receive the message: /usr/bin/xauth: ~/.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored Of course, their X forwarded applications will not work at this point. However, if they log out and log right back in again they do not get the message and everything works as expected. On their Mac they get their home directory via AFP. The Linux machines get it via NFS. Any ideas on what could be going on here?

• SCCM 2012 R2 - OSD Task Sequence failure on physical computers

  I'm trying to deploy windows 7 with SCCM 2012 R2 to physical desktops and laptops. But the task sequence keeps failing, no matter what I try. When I try it on a VM it works fine. However, when I try it on a physical computer it fails. So I think it has something to do with drivers, but I already tried both the "auto apply drivers" + wmi query for model method, and also the "apply driver package" + wmi query for model method. In the link below I added a zip file, containing two other zip files. One is a captured log from a failed osd on a desktop, the other is the export of my task sequence. Download zip-file with log and TS If anyone could resolve the issue, or share their own task sequence for such a task (pure sccm 2012 (R2), no MDT), that would be great.

• The lifecycle of "cool"

  I've been thinking lately about how some programming projects/products become "cool," and in particular, how that trend can later reverse. Here are two examples that might better explain my context: Textmate Whenever someone asks about text editors on OS X, the answer on the SE sites is an automatic "Textmate!" But looked at objectively: Textmate 1.0 shipped October 2004 Textmate 1.5 shipped January 2006 Textmate 2 was announced February 2006 As of September 2010, the currently shipping version is 1.5.9 In all of 2010, there have been a total of three posts on the Textmate blog At what point (if ever) do Textmate fans start thinking about switching to another text editor? When it breaks after some future Apple update? When alpha geeks they respect start recommending something else? Or? jQuery Whenever a JavaScript-related question is asked on the SE sites, the knee-jerk response is "jQuery!" I've seen it happen even when the question itself only required a single line of JavaScript. Or when the question could be better answered by using CSS. Do the answerers understand they're suggesting a blowtorch to light a candle? That they're recommending adding 70K or so of code to do something trivial? Or is it a symptom of "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail"—that is, jQuery is all they know how to do, so that's their recommendation? And do they understand that while they may know jQuery well, that doesn't necessarily mean that they know JavaScript? Is there a way to explain that learning JavaScript would make them better jQuery programmers? My bigger-picture questions: Is this niche focus primarily a trait of programmers? How do you get programmers to not immediately jump to recommending their personal favorites? What can motivate programmers to review their initial selection criteria and possibly modify their choice? Your thoughts?

  Hello, I'm having a strangely difficult time setting up a subdomain (x.example.com). The main site works fine, but I get 404 errors attempting to hit x.example.com no matter how I set up the VirtualHost config. • Permissions for Scheduled Tasks on a Domain Controller

  I'm trying to run a Scheduled Task on a 2008 R2 Domain Controller and all was well until I set it into the production environment. I'm running the task as a Domain User that's defined in the "Log on as a batch job" setting. For giggles I also added the account to "Allow log on locally" after the former failed. When I'm prompted for the password after setting up the task I receive the error: "An error has occurred for the task ########. Error message: The following error was reported: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.." I'm thinking that because this a DC that maybe it needs something else?

• Bad certificate error with RabbitMQ using SSL

  I am trying to get RabbitMQ working with SSL on a couple of Gentoo servers. I get the following error in /var/log/rabbitmq/rabbit@...log when I try to connect to the management console using https: SSL: certify: ssl_connection.erl:1641:Fatal error: bad certificate I followed the instructions here: http://www.rabbitmq.com/ssl.html The annoying thing is that I have 2 cloned servers and it is working on one and not the other. As far as I can tell the machines are configured identically. I wrote a script to generate the certs etc. and have run it on both. I am not using client certificates. Anyone know how I can figure out whats wrong with my certificate(s)? I am using Erlang 15.2, RabbitMQ 2.7.9, OpenSSL 0.9.8k.

  I have exactly the same problem as described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12849986/connection-timeout-when-accessing-github So I'll just copy & paste: I have some weird problems. When I try to log in my Github account, I get a "net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE" error. I tried with Chrome, Firefox and Opera. In Firefox, if a clean the cache and offline data, it works for a while. Then I can log in, but I still can't create a Github repository, even if I clear the cache again. My friend, in the same network, with Windows, can do whatever he wants on Github's web site, but I can't. • Googlebot cant access my site webmaster tools reply Unreachable robots.txt

  When I try to fetch my site as a googlebot in webmaster tools it return Unreachable robots.txt, after investigate I understood google bot can see my server: tcpdump | grep google it return that google can access my server with IP 66.249.81.172 or 66.249.75.111. but there is not any think in access log or error log or other apache logs. cat access_log | grep google or cat error_log | grep 66.249.81.172 Other bot (bing,...) can access apache but google cant. there is not any problem in my robots.txt or its permissions because as you know robots.txt is not necessary so I delete it but again webmaster tools returned Unreachable robots.txt not 404 not found! information about server: Server OS : CentOS 6 Web Server : Apache 2.x Firewall : IPTables is stoped SELinux is Disabled There is not any think else for security on my server. how can I investigate the problem and is there any other command that can help me to find the problem.

• Building optimal custom machine for Sql Server

  Getting the hardware in the mail any day. Hardware related to my question: x10 15.5k RPM SAS Segate Cheetah's x2 Adaptec 5405 PCIe Raid cards Motherboard has integrated SAS raid. Was thinking I would build 2 RAID 10 arrays one for data and one for logs The remaining 2 drives a RAID 0 for TempDB Will probably throw in a drive for OS. Does putting the Sql Server application / exe's on a raid make a difference and is there any impact of leaving the OS on a relatively slow disk compared to the raid arrays? I have 5/6 DBs combined < 50 gigs. With a relatively good / constant load. Estimating 60-7% reads vs writes. Planning on using log shipping as well if that matters. Any advice or suggestions?

• MySql #2002 problem

  when i try to login in apache i get #2002 error. when i try to login via terminal it ask my password mysql -u root and i get ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) i tried to remove mysql and install it again and nothing happen ( i cant even remove it) i try to reboot apache but still nothing. i tried to reboot my pc and of course still aint working. in terminal i put sudo start mysql i got this: start: Job failed to start mysql -ubob -hlocalhost -P3306 -p got me this ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) sudo service mysql stop gave me this stop: Unknown instance: my.cnf * Basic Settings # user = mysql pid-file = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid socket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock port = 3306 basedir = /usr datadir = /var/lib/mysql tmpdir = /tmp lc-messages-dir = /usr/share/mysql skip-external-locking # i tried to find if there is a file in my /var/run/mysqld/ or in /var/tmp/ and dint find the file mysqld.sock .. i looked in /var/log/mysql/ and dont even have anything in it can help me???i try to find help on google for hours and dint help at all... -------EDIT---------- salem : sudo service mysql start i get start: Job failed to start cat /var/log/syslog | grep mysql here http://paste.ubuntu.com/1335984/ /var/run/mysqld/ this folder exist but it dosent have anything in it /var/run/mysqld/ i get total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql root 40 Nov 5 22:31 . drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 860 Nov 5 22:32 .. sorry that i post anything my terminal gives but i am noob at this. hope this information will do.

• VHOST not working in Apache

  I got a LAMP server working in Ubuntu 11.04. Now the problem is that the websites have to enabled and disabled from the terminal. All all of them have to be accessed from http://localhost which is not so much efficient. So I created a VHOSTS, using some tutorials off the net.
