  • SAP or Navision? Career Path

    This could be tricky to ask; I may or may not ask this question here but I thought to give it a try. I've been in Software Industry since 2002 and now it has been a time that I'm at Senior level where I normally code, lead and define the architect; giving technical solutions to the management is one of my asset that I've earned during my services. Now it is the time to define the road map for the future, $$$. I am not in favor of Project Management roles. I've been thinking of going through the ERP and my current company does provide me an option to go for Navision/ Microsoft Dynamics. They are currently on 4.0 but they are planning to move for 2009 and also to build one of their own plug-in. Indeed the option is good because Microsoft is trying to accomplish the market for Dynamics products. However, they have less success in Australia. Now, Another option is with SAP where person can go with 200 K $ a year. Where as I'd doubt that if the same kind of growth, financial, is available for Microsoft geek. What is your opinion on Navision or SAP? If I try to completely move to SAP it could be bit challenging as market will consider me a fresher. However the return is quite good. Where in case of Microsoft, I think technology changes so fast that there is a less chance to grow in, within, the same experience; in other word, if any new framework comes in .net then market look for that person who knows this new framework and not .net But in case of SAP, where the base remain same and chances are to grab more money from the market. What would you do if you were me? In stackoverflow - Navision questions are 20+ where in SAP 200+///?? :-)

I'm trying to write an error handler to wrap around my script.  Part of the error handler is dumping out some variable settings.  I spent a while trying to do this and couldn't google a complete solution so I thought I'd post something. I want to display the $myinvocation variable. That code works most of the time without any problems, but sometimes the document is not imported into the document-library and i get this nasty exception instead.   • MOSS2007 tries to use ActiveDirectory when I have configured an alternative membership provider

    I've got a MOSS site that I am trying to configure using Forms authentication and absolutely any kind of membership provider whatsoever. Thus far ActiveDirectory has proved obstructively difficult so I've just whipped up a simple stub membership provider and put it in the GAC. It's a very basic and simple provider but it works fine with an ASP.Net site, I just can't make it work with Sharepoint. I've made sure I reset IIS and even restarted the server to see if either of those helped but they made no difference.

  • PC freezing when used to print labels

    Hi I have a windows XP machine that is used to print labels from a Zebra label printer. It is connected a member of the domain. I am getting reports that when people try to use the computer it will sometimes be frozen to the point where they have to physically shut the machine down and boot to get it responding. (this happens about once a day). IronRuby for Rubyists IronRuby is Microsoft's implementation of the Ruby language we all know and love with the added bonus of interoperability with the .NET framework — the Iron in the name is actually an acronym for 'Implementation running on .NET'. It's supported by the .NET Common Language Runtime as well as, albeit unofficially, the Mono project. You'd be forgiven for harbouring some question in your mind about running a dynamic language such as Ruby atop the CLR - that's where the DLR (Dynamic Language Runtime) comes in. The DLR is Microsoft's way of providing dynamic language capability on top of the CLR. Both IronRuby and the DLR are, as part of Microsoft's commitment to open source software, available as part of the Microsoft Public License on GitHub and CodePlex respectively… And Metaprogramming with IronRuby The art and science of metaprogramming — especially in Ruby, where it's an absolute joy — is something that could very easily span an entire article. I checked the log and the 1st error referred to Microsoft Security Essentials\Support\Applications.etl: Appears incomplete. The other 5 errors referred to the Microsoft SQL Server.....\MSSQL\log_...trc: Appears incomplete. Is this a problem that can be solved by reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials? Or wht else?   • Nginx alias or rewrite for Horde Groupware ActiveSync URL does not process the rpc.php file

    I'm trying to setup a Horde groupware with Nginx. The webinterface works but I do not get the ActiveSync specific URL to work. The Horde Wiki explains how to use it with an Apache Webserver here. My problem is, that I setup a rewrite (tried an alias too) to serve the location /horde/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync via the /horde/rpc.php script. But with my current configuration nginx does the rewrite and returns a 200 status code. But it looks like that the php file is not executed. If I go to /horde/rpc.php directly it opens up the login dialog. So this seems to work correct. Firstly I was googling about the problem but could not find a working solution. So now I would like to ask you. The configuration should allow to access the ActiveSync part via the URL /horde/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync. The horde webinterface is already accessible via /horde.   • Leveraging .Net 4.0 Framework Tools For Encrypting Web Configuration Sections

    I would like to share a few points with regards to encrypting web configuration sections in .Net 4.0. This information is also applicable to .Net 3.5 and 2.0. Two methods can work perfectly for encrypting connection strings in a Web project configuration file:   1-Do It All Yourself! In this approach, helper functions for encrypting/decrypting configuration file content are implemented. Program would explicitly retrieve appropriate content from configuration file then decrypt it appropriately.  Disadvantages of this implementation would be the added overhead for maintaining the encryption/decryption code as well the burden of always ensuring sections are appropriately decrypted before use and encrypted appropriately whenever edited.   2- Leverage the .Net 4.0 Framework (The Way to go!) Fortunately, all needed tools for protecting configuration files are built-in to the .Net 2.0/3.5/4.0 versions with very little setup needed. To encrypt connection strings, one can use the ASP.Net IIS Registration Tool (Aspnet_regiis.exe). Note that a 64-bit version of the tool also exists under the Framework64 folder for 64-bit systems. The command we need to encrypt our web.config file connection strings is simply the following:   Aspnet_regiis –pe “connectionstrings” –app “/sampleApplication” –prov “RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider”   To later decrypt this configuration section:   Aspnet_regiis –pd “connectionstrings” –app “/SampleApplication”   The following is a brief description of the command line options used in the example above. Aspnet_regiis supports many more options which you can read about in the links provided for reference below.   Option Description -pe  Section name to encrypt -pd  Section name to decrypt -app  Web application name -prov  Encryption/Decryption provider   ASP.Net automatically decrypts the content of the Web.Config file at runtime so no programming changes are needed.   Another tool, aspnet_setreg.exe is to be used if certain configuration file sections pertinent to the .Net runtime are to be encrypted. I felt that way before, having been to most of them. The breadth of people and disciplines make it a really exciting event that pushes it well beyond the "Redmond bubble," as I like to call it. You should go.In any case, there's an Open Source Fest happening the night before Mix starts, on Monday, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be people there representing a ton of great projects, some as enormous as Umbraco, as well as people doing SDK's, controls and other neat stuff. Best of all, you get to vote for your favorites. Unless your favorite is Orchard, because Microsoft is sponsoring that directly. Or if it's POP Forums, not because Microsoft is sponsoring it, but because that's where I work in my day job. No prizes for me! Come by and say hello. I think the app will be nearly final by then, and it's already running on MouseZoom, one of my little side projects.The quality and diversity of open source projects around the Microsoft stack just keeps getting better. Our platform is also pretty great at running stuff we don't make. This will be a pretty exciting Mix. Can't wait!

    I have connected my Windows live account(Microsoft account), Facebook account and Google account with Windows 8. On "People" Windows 8 app it shows as connected to Microsoft, Facebook, Google, whereas in "Messaging" app its connected only to Microsoft and Facebook. While I can chat with Facebook online contacts and messenger's, I cant find my Google online contacts only on Messaging app. Seems like Google supports only sharing of contacts and not chat as of now. Does anyone knows how to get Google chat on Windows 8 Messaging?

    THE STORY: I've installed Apache 2.2.17 , PHP 5.2.16 , MySQL 5.5.8 . The PHP woks great, the phpinfo() works on the localhost. THE PROBLEM: The thing is that in phpinfo() there is no mysql mentionened. I've done the following: moved php.ini to C:\windows removed the ";" in front of the mysql extension line ( extension=php_mysql.dll ) copied the libmysql.dll to php folder & windows\system32 checked the extension path in php.ini to be " C:\php\ext" searched the internet for a solution for about 2 hours... ADDITIONAL INFO: In the Apache Enviorment path I have the following: C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\OJI\MinGWStudio\work\mingw\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\; I think the Microsoft SQL path should be replaced with the MySQL one, but I don't know where to change that...

  • Windows 7+ desktop apps - what's the best UI toolkit for a new project?

    I'm trying to make a decision for a new Windows desktop app: what to use for the UI. (This is a desktop app that needs to have compatibility with Windows 7. It won't be distributed on the Windows Store.) This application is going to be cross-platform. I intend on writing the core in C++, and using each platform's native UI toolkit. I feel this is preferable to using a cross-platform toolkit like Qt, as it allows me to keep the native look and feel of each platform. On the Windows side, the UI situation isn't exactly clear. I'm getting the feeling that Microsoft is slowly abandoning .NET, particularly as their preferred toolkit for desktop apps. Indeed, the Getting Started chapter for Windows 7, as well as the rest of Microsoft's documentation, seems to be more suited for C++. I have a few options here: C# with WPF - This sesms like this might be the best Microsoft has to offer for Windows 7 desktop apps, even if it isn't their "preferred" toolkit. I'd need to use P/Invoke to call my C++ code. C++ with Direct2D - This is what Microsoft used in one of their examples. This feels like it's too low-level. Part of the appeal of a higher-level UI toolkit is the consistency with the native look and feel of the platform, so doing this would just feel strange. C++ with a third-party UI toolkit, like Qt There might be some other options I'm missing, which I'd love to hear about. So, if you were starting a new Windows 7+ desktop app today, what would you use?

    I am trying to sort out caching in IIS for my site. Basically, I want nothing cached, except for .png, .js, and .css files. At my site level, I opened the HTTP Reponse Headers and used the "Set Common Hedaers..." to set content to expire immediately. I have no Output Caching profiles set at any level in IIS. I clear my browser cache then try accessing my site.   • The year ahead, 2011.

    When I look back at last years look at 2010 my blogging rate has not changed much (I suspect this is largely down to using Twitter a lot) but my interests this year have developed a lot further. My view on 2010 would be that Microsoft would commit more to OSS, while I wanted to see more hires from that audience and more projects on Outercurve foundation instead there has been support for JQuery and Gems (aka NuGet). I would love to see more from Microsoft on the OSS front in 2011, Outercurve could become like the Apache foundation with enough support. Staying on the Microsoft front I predict that 2011 will bring the following. C# 5.0 will go RTM (still no MOP though) The next release of VS will go alpha or early beta MS MVC 4.0 (I think by Mix time) and maybe this release will get a command line. I also suspect that Microsoft will want to target the tablet market with WP7 in 2011 (Mix 2011 maybe...). I also predict the following Java will fork with Apache\Google. Oracle will then take them to court and the whole thing will boil right through 2011 (Java have had enough court cases, come on guys). Java and the JVM will sadly not move forward at all in 2011. Android will cause Apple a serious headache, both the smartphone and tablet market will see figures cut from Apple share. By the end of 2011 the current 70% apple market share will be 40-50%. As the features, performance and price of Android devices gets ever better Apple will be left out in the open. Lastly after 7 years I intend to move this blog away from weblogs. In 2011 I will be exploring Java, Ruby\Rails and Android and such subjects don't make sense to talk about it here. See you in 2011.

    I'm writing a small batch file to replace users' themes and charts in Office and I have the below batch file that works just fine. cd c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\templates echo Y|rmdir charts /s mkdir charts echo Y|del "c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\templates\document themes\*.*" net use o: \\servername\sms copy "o:\ppt themes\charts\*.*" "c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\templates\charts" copy "o:\ppt themes\Document Themes\*.*" "c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\microsoft\templates\document themes" c: net use o: /delete Now what I want is the above to only run if it hasn't run before as we'll be pushing this out to all users for around 2 weeks to catch people that aren't in every day. Is there any way to begin the command with something to look for one of the new themes/charts already pushed down, and if it's present, then have it not run? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty new to these batch files.

    I would like to know how to change my the location my $profile variable points to. [D] Do not run [R] Run once [S] Suspend [?] Help (default is "D"): According to Microsoft, the location of the $profile is determined by the %USERPROFILE% environment variable.
