• Cross-platform configuration, options, settings, preferences, defaults

  I'm interested in peoples' views on how best to store preferences and default settings in cross-platform applications. I primarily work in Perl on *nix and Windows but I'm also interested in the bigger picture. In the *nix world "dotfiles" (and directories) are very common with system-wide or application default settings generally residing in one path and user-specific settings in the home directory. Such files and dirs begin with a dot "." and are hidden by default from directory listings. Windows has the registry which also has paths for defaults and per-user overrides. Certain cross-platforms do it their own way, Firefox uses JavaScript preference files. Should a cross-platform app use one system across platforms or say dotfiles on *nix and registry on Windows? Does your favourite programming language have a library or module for accessing them in a standard way? Is there an emerging best practice or does everybody roll their own?

• How many parameters in C# method are acceptable?

  I am new to C# and have to maintain a C# Application. Now I'v found a method vaving 32 Parameters (not auto-generated code). From C/C++ I remember the rule of thumb "4 Parameters". It may be an old-fashioned rule rooting back to old 0x86 compilers, where 4 Parameters could be accomodated in registers (fast) or on stack otherwise. I am not concerning about performance, but I do have a feeling, that 32 parameters per functions are not easy to maintain even in C#. Or am I completly not up to date? What is the rule of thumb for C#? Thank you for any hint!

• Need help using ThemeRoller

  Hi - I'm using DataTables to dress up a table I'm using to display XML results based on an XSL transformation. I have everything working from a technical sense (paging, sorting, filtering), but I'm trying to figure out to use a ThemeRoller theme to make it look like they have on their website. So far, I have added the following file to my project with its reference: <link type="text/css" href="css/custom-theme/jquery-ui-1.8.7.custom.css" rel="stylesheet"/> and enabled ThemeRoller themes using the following as per the DataTables website: $(document).ready(function() { $('#mainTable').dataTable( { "bJQueryUI": true, "sPaginationType": "two_button" }); }); The table gets styled, but it doesn't look right with the header rows being too wide and things being on multiple lines that should be on one line. Any indication as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks very much in advance.

• how can I send messages to/from a Websphere Message Broker from an embedded C client (no JVM)?

  What are my options for pubsubing (or point to point but pubsub is better) messages to and from an IBM message broker from an embedded headless C/C++ linux client that doesn't have a JVM? Ideally we want large file transfer (2GB once per day off of the client) encryption (SSL) reliable ('assured' delivery / QoS2, maybe QoS1 would do) The client in question currently only has exes and some bash scripts, I've been playing with MQTTv3 and RSMB, but for that I'd have to chomp the large files up (and reassemble back home) and I don't want to get into that if there's a transport that will do this for me? I've looked at MQTTv5 (but our client's got no JVM); JMS (no JVM) and XMS? which again looks like it gives me a C API but then needs the JVM to be installed on the client (or am I wrong?) any clues or hints would be appreciated, cheers

• XNA or C# Pop-up progress bar for the LoadContent() method

  Hey people, We wrote a small game using Microsoft's XNA Game Studio 3.1. The LoadContent() takes a long time because, other than loading models, and config files, we're also running some one-time (per run) terrain analysis. We are not C# or XNA programmers... we're Java programmers, and want to be able to give the user some feedback that the system is loading. Preferably, this will be through a simple pop-up with a progress bar that will say something simple like "loading please wait". The progress bar doesn't have to be a 0 to 1 progress bar, it can instead be one of those 'back and forth' progress bars. I was hoping for some quick copy-paste ready code to just do that - as it is not a central piece of our project, nor do we have a need to delve into too much documentation.   I find that even if I just declare an element like $this->addElement('textarea', 'txt1'); I find that it already has decorators set Zend_Debug::dump($this->getElement('txt1')->getDecorators()); http://pastebin.com/7Y24g62w I want to test that I didn't set decorators using setDecorators() or using something like $this->addElement('textarea', 'txt1', array( 'decorators' => array(...) )); If I didn't set any decorators then apply default decorators, how can I do that. I want to apply default decorators per element basis, not using Zend_Form#setDisableLoadDefaultDecoraotrs()

• iPhone / NSArray : How do I format a text file to be read in using arrayWithContentsOfFile

  I have several large word lists and I had been loading them in place in the code as follows: NSArray *dict3 = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"abled",@"about",@"above",@"absurd",@"absurdity", ... but now it is actually causing an exc_bad_access error weirdly, i know it seems implausible but for some reason IT IS causing it. (trust me on this I just spend the better part of a day debugging this crap) Anyway, I'm looking to get these humongous lines of code out of my files but I'm not sure what the best approach is. I guess I could do a plist but I need to figure out how to automate the process. it be easiest if I could just use the text files I've been compiling so if anyone knows how I can format the text file so that the myArray = [NSArray arrayWithContentsOfFile: @"myTextFile.txt"]; will be read in correctly as one word per element in the array it would really be appreciated. • "Cleanly" Deploying an ASP.NET Application with LINQ to SQL Server

  In my development environment, my SQL Server is PHILIP\SQLEXPRESS. In testing, it's ANNIE, and the live environment will have a third name yet to be determined. I would have assumed that updating the following statement in web.config would have been enough: <add name="MyConnectionString"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" connectionString="Data Source=PHILIP\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=MyDtabase;Integrated Security=True" /> When using SqlConnection, SqlCommand, SqlDataReader and friends, that's all it took. Using LINQ, it doesn't seem to work that nicely. I see the servername repeated in my .dbml file as well as in Settings.settings. After changing it in all of those places, I get it to work. However if I'm doing a few deployments per day during testing, I want to avoid this regimen. My question is: is there a programmatic solution for LINQ to SQL that will allow me to specify the connection string once, preferably in web.config, and get everybody else to refer to it?

• View of nodes and their translations

  I'm trying to create a view of nodes and their translations. Specifically, I want each row to show the node title for each language. The way I'm doing it right now is by filtering the view by a specific language, then adding one relationship of type "Node translation: Translations" for each language on the site. I can then choose the "Node: Title" field, once for the original language and once per relationship. The problem with this approach is that the nodes that don't exist in the filtered language, but exist in other languages, are not included in the view. That's what I need help with.

  I'm not sure it's even possible, but my command line usecase goes something like this: do svn update do a svn log -l {how many times since my last commit - 1} do a `svn diff -rHEAD:{my last commit revision + 1} and try to get an overview of what happened since last time I touched the code. I get a lot of valuable information from this, and would like everybody in my team to get the same feeling of control and overview of the code base. Not everyone in my team is comfortable with the command line but like the hudson interface. So; is there a way to the the commit diff since last build (we do a build per commit) in the individual build page?

• Are indivisible operations still indivisible on multiprocessor and multicore systems?

  As per the title, plus what are the limitations and gotchas. For example, on x86 processors, alignment for most data types is optional - an optimisation rather than a requirement. That means that a pointer may be stored at an unaligned address, which in turn means that pointer might be split over a cache page boundary. Obviously this could be done if you work hard enough on any processor (picking out particular bytes etc), but not in a way where you'd still expect the write operation to be indivisible. I seriously doubt that a multicore processor can ensure that other cores can guarantee a consistent all-before or all-after view of a written pointer in this unaligned-write-crossing-a-page-boundary situation. Am I right? And are there any similar gotchas I haven't thought of?

  How do I count the number of records in a MySQL table based on a timestamp column per unit of time where the unit of time is arbitrary? Specifically, I want to count how many record's timestamps fell into 15 minute buckets during a given interval. I understand how to do this in buckets of 1 second, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day etc. using MySQL date functions, e.g. SELECT YEAR(datefield) Y, MONTH(datefield) M, DAY(datefield) D, COUNT(*) Cnt FROM mytable GROUP BY YEAR(datefield), MONTH(datefield), DAY(datefield) but how can I group by 15 minute buckets?

  Hi all. Basically, I was doing some testing using apache bench. The file i was testing takes 2 seconds to execute (its optimised, it connects to an external server hence the slowdown) Basically I found that the more concurrent useres i emulated, the more executions of the file i could do per second. Is there anyway that i can do something like this in php? : <?php execute_file('file.php'); execute_file('file.php'); execute_file('file.php'); execute_file('file.php'); execute_file('file.php'); ?> That would execute the file 5 times but would NOT wait for the files to finish downloading so the above example would quickly call the 5 functions then exit. Im assuming somesort of timeout would be used?

• Any way to have delayed_job execute some run-once code at startup and use across all jobs?

  So I've got a delayed_job task that pushes some info to an XMPP server. Ideally you create a connection to XMPP once and then constantly push data to it, rather than creating a new connection every time you have some data to send. Is there any kind of facility in delayed_job for running a sort of 'setup' method when a worker starts, have it set some instance variables (like the XMPP connection object) that can then be used by all the jobs that come up? It's okay if each worker runs its own setup method. I just don't want every job (thousands per day) connecting to the XMPP server from scratch every time. Thanks for any help!

My question is how in the hell do I define a default value as per the documentation's description. Here's the code: <%@ attribute name="visible" required="false" type="java.lang.Boolean" %> <c:if test="${visible}"> My Tag Contents Here </c:if> Obviously, this tag won't compile because it's lacking the tag directive and the core library import. My point is that I want the "visible" property to default to TRUE. The "tag attribute is not required," so the "tag handler should provide a default value." I want to provide a default value, so what am I missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Pretty much, I have 8 sound files laid out in an array.xml file and I need to play a randomly chosen file ONCE per or onClick or onShake. First off, what technique should I use to achieve this? ARRAY-RANDOM- STRING-PLAY? RANDOM INT-PLAY? RANDOM INT-STRING-PLAY?   As per the documentation link given below: When a lock wait timeout occurs, the current statement is not executed. The current transaction is not rolled back. (Until MySQL 5.0.13 InnoDB rolled back the entire transaction if a lock wait timeout happened. You can restore this behavior by starting the server with the --innodb_rollback_on_timeout option, available as of MySQL 5.0.32. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/innodb-parameters.html#sysvar_innodb_lock_wait_timeout Does it mean that when a lock wait timeout occurs, it compromises the transactional integrity? "roollback on timeout" was the default behaviour till 5.0.13 and I guess that was the correct way to handle such situations. Does anyone think that this should be the default behaviour and the user should not be asked to add a parameter for a functionality that is taken for granted?

• Canonicalizing XML in Ruby

  I'm working on a SAML gateway using Ruby/Rails and I'm attempting to write some code that validates the xml digital signature of the incoming SAML response against the x509 cert of the originating service. My problem: the signature depends on a canonicalized version of the XML that is hashed and then signed and I'm having trouble finding a ruby lib/gem that will canonicalize XML per the spec. I found a super old gem on rubyforge that is a mess but I'd be more interested if something like nokogiri supported this kind of functionality (from the nokogiri docs, it doesn't). I've googled extensively but thought I'd ask around here to see if anyone has any good insights before I go and try to write my own version or rework the existing c14n-r library.
