  With GDC 2011 wrapping up there were a LOT of great interviews and posts with and about XNA and XBLIG and some of our more notorious developers. Definitely worth spending many, many hours watching, listening and reading all those. Very inspiring! Also, don’t forget to get signed up for Dream Build Play! And just as an early warning reminder do NOT, I repeat do NOT wait to submit your game the last day. There are major issues submitting the last day every year and you do not want all your hard work to be hanging on whether your entry actually went through in that last day. • Microsoft Business Intelligence Seminar 2011

  I was lucky enough to attend the maiden presentation of this at Microsoft Reading yesterday. It was pretty gripping stuff not only because of what was said but also because of what could only be hinted at. Here's what I took away from the day. (Disclaimer: I'm not a BI guru, just a reasonably experienced BI developer, so I may have misunderstood or misinterpreted a few things. Particularly when so much of the talk was about the vision and subtle hints of what is coming. Please comment if you think I've got anything wrong. I'm also not going to even try to cover Master Data Services as I struggled to imagine how you would actually use it.) I was a bit worried when I learned that the whole day was going to be presented by one guy but Rafal Lukawiecki is a very engaging speaker. He's going to be presenting this about 20 times around the world over the coming months. If you get a chance to hear him speak, I say go for it. No doubt some of the hints will become clearer as Denali gets closer to RTM. Firstly, things are definitely happening in the SQL Server Reporting and BI world. Traditionally IT would build a data warehouse, then cubes on top of that, and then publish them in a structured and controlled way. But, just as with many IT projects in general, by the time it's finished the business has moved on and the system no longer meets their requirements. This not sustainable and something more agile is needed but there has to be some control. Apparently we're going to be hearing the catchphrase 'Balancing agility with control' a lot. More users want more access to more data. Can they define what they want? Of course not, but they'll recognise it when they see it. It's estimated that only 28% of potential BI users have meaningful access to the data they need, so there is a real pent-up demand. The answer looks like: give them some self-service tools so they can experiment and see what works, and then IT can help to support the results. It's estimated that 32% of Excel users are comfortable with its analysis tools such as pivot tables. It's the power user's preferred tool. Why fight it? That's why PowerPivot is an Excel add-in and that's why they released a Data Mining add-in for it as well. It does appear that the strategy is going to be to use Reporting Services (in SharePoint mode), PowerPivot, and possibly something new (smiles and hints but no details) to create reports and explore data. Everything will be published and managed in SharePoint which gives users the ability to mash-up, share and socialise what they've found out. SharePoint also gives IT tools to understand what people are looking at and where to concentrate effort. If PowerPivot report X becomes widely used, it's time to check that it shows what they think it does and perhaps get it a bit more under central control. There was more SharePoint detail that went slightly over my head regarding where Excel Services and Excel Web Application fit in, the differences between them, and the suggestion that it is likely they will one day become one (but not in the immediate future). That basic pattern is set to be expanded upon by further exploiting Vertipaq (the columnar indexing engine that enables PowerPivot to store and process a lot of data fast and in a small memory footprint) to provide scalability 'from the desktop to the data centre', and some yet to be detailed advances in 'frictionless deployment' (part of which is about making the difference between local and the cloud pretty much irrelevant). Excel looks like becoming Microsoft's primary BI client. It already has: the ability to consume cubes strong visualisation tools slicers (which are part of Excel not PowerPivot) a data mining add-in PowerPivot A major hurdle for self-service BI is presenting the data in a consumable format. You can't just give users PowerPivot and a server with a copy of the OLTP database(s). Building cubes is labour intensive and doesn't always give the user what they need. This is where the BI Semantic Model (BISM) comes in. I gather it's a layer of metadata you define that can combine multiple data sources (and types of data source) into a clear 'interface' that users can work with. It comes with a new query language called DAX. SSAS cubes are unlikely to go away overnight because, with their pre-calculated results, they are still the most efficient way to work with really big data sets. A few other random titbits that came up: Reporting Services is going to get some good new stuff in Denali. Keep an eye on www.projectbotticelli.com for the slides. You can also view last year's seminar sessions which covered a lot of the same ground as far as the overall strategy is concerned. They plan to add more material as Denali's features are publicly exposed. Check out the PASS keynote address for a showing of Yahoo's SQL BI servers. Apparently they wheeled the rack out on stage still plugged in and running! Check out the Excel 2010 Data Mining Add-Ins. 32 bit only at present but 64 bit is on the way. There are lots of data sets, many of them free, at the Windows Azure Marketplace Data Market (where you can also get ESRI shape files). If you haven't already seen it, have a look at the Silverlight Pivot Viewer (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/06/29/silverlight-pivotviewer-now-available.aspx).   Hi all, I'm having a problem with a WCF Service and Java Client, I will try to give as much information as i can, thanks for your time. The Endpoint of the server is BasicHttpBinding, I tried hosting the server as a Windows Service and in IIS but nothing changed. The weird thing is that the Client works great if I use a simple class, in the moment I switch the class to an JApplet I get the problem mentioned. I'm using Eclipse as an IDE, I tried Axis and Metro to generate the stub with the same bad results.   Basically, what can be achieved by going to Control Panel Uninstall a Program View Installed Updates Right Click Uninstall, but through the command line? Looking for a way that works across the Windows platform but if (and according to my reading, most likely) it's version dependent so be it. Maybe something like: C:\command /uninstall "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2705219)" Looks like using the KB would be great but wusa.exe works for the above example update but not for say "Security Update for Silverlight (KBXXXXXXXX)". Not much consistency. I'm really surprised there isn't much documentation on this. How does an app like WUInstall do it? Follow up question is how is that list of "View Installed Updates" populated? I've searched the registry like crazy hoping for an "UninstallString" or equivalent but only found references to the regular Add/Remove Programs list. Thought I would reference a StackOverflow question for another perspective.

  All, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for resources to answer my question, and I realize that speculation about this kind of thing is highly subjective. I need help determining what class of server I should purchase to host a MS Silverlight application with a MSSQL server back-end on a Windows Server 2008 platform. It's an interactive program, so I can't simply generate a list of URLs to test against, and run it with 1000 simultaneous users. What tools are out there to help me determine what kind of load the application will put on a server at varying levels of concurrent users? Would you all suggest separating the SQL server form the web server, to better differentiate the generated load on the different parts of the stack?

• Unable to browse some pdfs and docs.

  I have a web site that uses Microsoft Indexing Service to index and query a directory that holds various documents of type pdf, rtf, mht, and doc. The indexing and querying works well (for the most part); however, some files will load while others will not. This is a Windows Server 2003 box running the site using IIS 6. The indexed directory is a sub directory off of the site's root directory (i.e. http://my.domain.com/files/). The file paths are accurate in the URL; however, I can only access some of the files of each file type. The files that I cannot access give a 404 File Not Found. I am able to open all files via windows explorer;however, attempting to open them via a browser over http is hit and miss. Has anyone experienced this issue and know how to resolve it? Anyone have any idea why I could access some files but not others? Does anyone have any recommendations on what to look into to try this (i.e. does owner matter or something like that?)?   Considering a machine with IIS 7.5/PHP 5.2/asp.net and mysql/MSSQL available, which webmail would you pick? Don't think it's relevant but the mail server is installed on localhost, and is hmailserver. If it's one using asp.net it'd be a bonus, but PHP is ok as well and probably offers more choices. "Client side" look and feel definitely needed, flash/silverlight/ajax not a problem. I have also seen this question, but being asked almost 2years ago and being focused on php webmails, I thought that some better option could've been released in the meantime.

I have no idea how or why this has happened, but I suspect it might be linked to the Browser Choice Screen that Microsoft was recently forced to display by EU law. However, many web sites will not display correctly in IE8 x64 (eg. sites that use Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight). I have the 32-bit version of IE pinned to my taskbar and if I launch it manually, everything is fine. But when I click on a URL from another program and IE is not already running, then the 64-bit version gets launched. This really messes with programs like BBC iPlayer which rely heavily on Adbobe Air and Flash. So, how do I get IE8 32-bit version to be the default version again? I've tried using the "default programs" control panel and that doesn;t make any difference (in fact, it doesn't give the choice between x84 and x64 versions, it just lists "internet explorer").

• Why is my Output distorted after encoding with Expression Encoder?

  I'm a "n00b" when it comes to re-encoding files. I'm trying to re-encode an AVI into a silverlight container via Encoding Video using Expression Encoder 4.0. As you can see in the video, the left is the input and it looks/sounds fine. The right is the output and it... doesn't. I'm unsure of where to go from here. I'm not sure why the output is jacked up, since the input looks fine. Input Video properties: AVI 2.49GB 22:34 809x605 Video: TSCC 809x605 15fps [Stream 00] Audio: PCM 22050Hz mono 352kbps [Stream 01] Choice of output doesn't seem to matter, they all end up distorted like the picture shows.

  I have my subject .net acedemically. I also learned core-java and did a project as well. I took training from a java firm. Now, as a skill I do have knowledge as both language. But, it is creating a large problem to me that, which field I should chhose? Even if having better OOP funda, will it be easier for me to transfer from one-another in future ? Please suggest me a way. Also, we do have may technologies available at both side, like JSP, JSF, J2ME, Share Point, SilverLight etc. Which is better as per their reliabity point of view? Which are fast growing and useful technologies used mostly in current IT corporate world ? Are they easier to learn at fresher's point of view? Please answer. Perhaps, this answer may help me mostly to create my way to learn them and go further.

  Hello everyone! I'm building a silverlight application hosted on ASP.NET Web App. / IIS7 / SSL-enabled website. For security, I put my silverlight page inside a Members folder in the ASP.NET Web Application, and restricted access from anonymous users.(see web.config below) when users try to access pages under Members folder, they get redirected to https://www.ssldemo.com/authenticationtest/login.aspx. • Is there any way to remotely configure a Microsoft Lync account?

  There are no perl modules for Lync. No open source clients. Windows Powershell can do some things with it, but only on the server on which the server software is installed. It would be useful to be able to forward a certain desk phone number (we use Lync for voip) to a personal cell phone. We can do this from our own desktop machines, but only using the Lync client. It would be nice to be able to have a cron script run that just did rotations, I wouldn't have to carry around the lousy on-call phone with me. communicator.exe doesn't take any useful parameters. Nor are there any obvious function names in the DLLs that would let me just use rundll32.exe to accomplish this. There is a Lync SDK, but no examples of changing phone forwarding, and my Windows 7 machine refuses to install the Silverlight SDK dependency for some reason I can't fathom. Does anyone have any other ideas how I might accomplish this?

When I loop through the container to add panels and buttons, the first add() throws the OOB exception. • How can I watch full size video on 1 monitor and work on another?

  Here is my situation. I have 3 monitors hooked up to my new PC running off 2 video cards. When I watch a video on one of the monitors and make it go full screen on that monitor it is great, however as soon as I click anywhere on one of the other 2 monitors, it makes me lose the full screen mode of the video and makes it go back to it's original size. This happens when watching a flash or silverlight based video in Google chrome as well as when I watch video from a player such as iTunes. Is it possible to make a video play fullscreen on one of my monitors and still work in the other two screens without loosing my full screen mode on the one monitor?
