• Windows Server 2008 - Setting Up DNS and Web Server (IIS) to host personal website?

  Okay, I have a server, (Windows Server 2008 R2 to be more precise) and I have installed PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, for web hosting purposes. I have set up a static ip address internally. I have installed the role DNS and Web Server (IIS) role. I now set up my forward looking zone as my chosen domain. I set up the nameservers as ns1.domain.co.uk with my IP address which I found from whatismyip.org. However, when I type my IP address, it times out with an error (Timeout Error). Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? Also I have seen that most websites have multiple nameservers, which are apparently mirror IP addresses which all redirect to one IP address. Also, I can locally connect using the IP address 192.168.0.8, however, I want to put my website online/live on the internet. Can anyone help me with this? -- Regards

• Why is my /dev/random so slow when using dd?

  I am trying to semi-securely erase a bunch of hard drives. The following is working at 20-50Mb/s dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda But dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda seems not to work. Also when I type dd if=/dev/random of=stdout It only gives me a few bytes regardless of what I pass it for bs= and count= Am I using /dev/random wrong? What other info should I look for to move this troubleshooting forward? Is there some other way to do this with a script or something like makeMyLifeEasy | dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda Or something like that...

• Need to scale quickly. Which cloud service should I use?

  Traffic to my facebook app is growing at an insane rate and I need some suggestions on how to scale. I'm probably not going to even be able to keep it running by the day's end, as it's hosted from my already overloaded dedicated server. I need to either move it to its own box or a cloud service like e2c. Something like e2c seems like the way to go, but my server admin skills are terrible. Is there a good front end management UI for e2c or another hosting service that is comparable in cost that is fully managed? I don't mind going with something a bit more expensive now if that means I can get everything switched over and running within 24 hours.

  Do anyone knows any kind of apps or services for "taking care of servers"? (besides managed servers) There are hundreds of ways your server or application can stop working properly. Small things are easy to miss but usually easy to fix. Log overgrouth, configuration issues, etc. Of course there are best practice checklists, but its not a human task to check configuration best practices. Im sure it can be automated: some kind of agent can monitor all system settings, say what is right and wrong and give suggestions on how to make it right. I have to admin several servers and I need some kind of overview of overall situation. As well as a tool, that will fix problems automatically. Can you people suggest something? • Excel - Chart that sums the values in multiple rows for each series

  Suppose I have a spread sheet that looks something like this... Now, I'd like to create a column chart that has 3 series, one for each country. Then, I want series for each category, but I want to plot the total, not each individual order total. So, something like this (excuse the horrible artwork)... The data label placement isn't all the important, the key is that for each Category (Bikes and Clothes) I chart the total for each country, not individual values from the "Order Total" column. Is this possible? Is it possible to do the same idea, but to switch Country and Category around?

• Which handsets work with IP DECT base?

  My workplace uses an Ascom IP DECT base station (IPBS1), and Ascom handsets as well. We're looking to replace some broken handsets; the ones by Ascom, however, are rather expensive, and we're not altogether satisfied with their quality. I've been looking at handsets from other manufacturers, which are much less expensive - however, since I don't know anything about DECT, VOIP, etc, I don't know if they will work with the base. I've perused the base's manual, but found nothing on handset compatibility. How can I find out what kind of handset works with our base?

• Cannot Copy Pictures w/ text or w/o from web pages anymore word in office starter 2010

  This is something new. I had been able to copy text and pictures from websites into a microsoft word office starter 2010. I have gone into advanced settings to no avail. I have verified that under paste special html is selected. I have reviewed the help sections and questions and they all tell me to select html under paste special but again it isn't working either. Also I used to have 3 formatting options under paste and am now only having two options. I did have a problem with my computer last night and I am wondering if something re-set itself..will you help?

• SVNNotify Where is it? how do I find it?

  I am on ubuntu. ok first of all I am running a post-commit script. I need the path to svnnotify to run it. The path the turotial I am reading has it as /usr/local/bin/svnnotify but nothing is in that location on my computer. I tried it anyways and I get something like: Warning post-commit hook failed: not found so I think I need to replace /usr/local/bin/svnnotify with the correct path to svnnotify. Well I do a search (Places>Search for Files) for svnnotify and nothing comes up. I know svnnotify is installed becuase if I open a command line and run svnnotify it tells me I am missing the required path argument. So how can it be installed if its not in the file system anywhere? I don't really know how linux works, its very new to me, so I am confused. Is there something I am missing?

  My laptop (windows 8.1) has a big partition so i would like to spit it into two smaller partitions. I tried hirens boot and jumped into gparted (something i have never used before) I resized windows partition (c:) and created a new partition, reboot, and my laptop cant boot I am seeing in gparted - sda1 ntfs recovery 300MB - sda2 fat32 100MB - sda3 unknown 128MB msftres - sda4 is my original C partition - sda5 is the new partition I tried with Windows 8 DVD there are options to automatically fix but it did not work. I also tried with make PC fresh or something like that and windows told me it cant fix because the drive is locked. Any help would be greatly appreciate. I stop playing with the tool now. • Writing good looking documentation in pdf format on a mac [closed]

  I'd like to write some documentation that will be written in sections (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc). I'd like to use something that will generate the table of contents in the end or at least have it "linked" up so that when I make changes everything is still accurate (if I merge section 2.1 and 2.2 or something). The end result needs to be in pdf. I don't want to pay $350 for Acrobat Pro either... I've got microsoft word, but every little thing is a pain (for example, having one background of a page be a different color than another). Any ideas on how to create quality documentation in a pdf format?

• What Filesystem should be used for a 4TB drive for both Windows and OSX compatibility? [closed]

  Note: I am aware of similar questions. The one's I seen here are for Windows, OSX, and Linux (which I do not need). I also can use Mountain Lion, which the other questions did not mention. I was going to use NTFS, but OSX Mountain Lion can only read that filesystem and not write to it for some reason. I want to use something native between OSX and Windows, as I don't want to risk losing the data over filesystem incompatibilities. I have USB 3.0 and want something that will allow files greater than 4GB. I do not mind installing a small set of drivers on the Windows machine(s), but I would strongly prefer to leave the Mac machine untouched. Thanks!

• Logging in over ssh in a different session?

  I don't know exactly what the correct term is, but I notice if I log in to a remote SSH server, then close the window, open a new one, and log into that server again, my bash history and user processes appear to be different. For instance, if I started a background process I can't get back into it, or something I typed won't show up in my bash history. The problem is for some reason occasionally something happens to my remote session and instead of being disconnected the session just hangs; I have to close the window and open a new one to reconnect. As a result sometimes it means a long running process basically is "lost" since I can't get back into it. Is there any way to set it up so that when I log back in I log back in to the same "session"? This is using OS X Terminal.

• TV Card Problem

  I have DVB-T card (CE9500B1) and it doesn't work. I've tried everything I knew (but I don't know much). It doesn't show any problem, but shows "No Signal". I used another TV card USB, found channels, put mine card again, and again nothing. I don't think it's broken, when I put USB in my laptop, it recognizes it. Also, these little lights on USB are never turned on. OS is Win 7. Help, please.

• Monitoring/logging a malfunctioning internet connection

  I have a mysterious internet connection problem: Every 15-20 minutes, the connection will become very slow, and take 2-3 minutes for anything to load. I've had a technician from the ISP over here to test the hardware, and everything is in pristine condition. They have no other explanation than a configuration error on my machine, a possibility I can exclude 90% because I'm experiencing the same problems with another machine. I will have to monitor the situation now, and I would like to run a program that logs when internet connections become slow. I thought about putting something together using at and wget. Does anybody know of some other tool for this that does this out of the box - maybe something with an adjustable request frequency, logging connection speeds etc.?

  I had a problem with my gVim. I lost some important modifications after I plugged on my machine after a hibernating process. To avoid this kind of problem, I would like to know if it's possible to add something in my .vimrc (or a plugin) that automatically backups all saving made to my files. Disk space is not an issue, I can delete these files after. I'm already using set backup set backupdir=~/.backup/vim set directory=~/.swap/vim This creates a myfile.extension~ in my .backup/vim. ...but I would like this configuration to add ~ to first save, ~0 to second, ~1 to third, ~2 to fourth, and so on - something that keeps copies from all modifications I made to a file. Is this possible? Do you know if there's a plugin for this?

• Adding expire headers to content served from CDN?

  I'm using MaxCDN to serve content to my blog using W3 Total Cache. The problem I'm running into when evaluating my site using Google Page Speed and YSlow! is that expire headers are not being sent on content delivered from the CDN, nor are they coming from a cookieless domain. Is this something that is completely in the hands of my CDN or is it something I can fix using my server configuration? • php apache unknow 500 error

  I currently have an error with my apache/php installation on a centos system. I checked the log files in /var/log/httpd and in my logs directory as specified in my virtual host file, but they are not getting populated with errors. I've also set php to log errors, through the php.ini, to the /var/log/httpd/ but the error file is not getting created. When I setup the display_errors = On in the php.ini all I get is a blank screen. this is a git controlled project that is running off of an ubuntu server that works perfectly, so there is something missing from this server. My question is, is there any way I can get more info on the error that I am getting? I just need something that I can trace back. I am using a codeigniter framework, so for me to trace through the code will take days. Thanks!

• Recommended Free DNS hosting for my webserve on a dynamic IP? [closed]

  I have finished a webserver project (for school) and the professor wants to be able to "test it" from home whenever he is free - this means I need to provide his with the URL to my webserver (which is fine). The only issue is that my IP-Address is dynamic (changes almost everyday) and I would rather not have to email him everytime - nor do I want him to try when it isn't working ... So I was looking into alternative solutions like DNS hosting (I hope that is the right terminology), so I could provide something static for him to connect to ... problem is I have never done this before...
