• Plesk 9 VPS - Doesn't reply to NameServer requests (nslookup, etc)

  Hi, I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with a new VPS i'm setting up. The VPS is running Plesk 9 on a CentOS 5 system. Everything works fine, except it doesn't serve dns requests. If I try something like nslookup [somedomain.com] the.ser.ver.ip to test a DNS query, i get the following error ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached I can't telnet to it on port 42 either.. I'm guessing something is blocking the requests.. firewall maybe? the plesk firewall module is installed and the nameservers entry is green. Any other way I can check what's blocking it on the server? Any help/tip greatly appreciated. Note: http works, i can telnet to the server on port 80 and i can also ping the server Thanks

• What am I doing wrong in my config for MySql?

  I know this has been asked before...but I have a spin as I have been trying out varying free software offerings. I want to rid out department of DiffDoc the problem is that I am having trouble locating something that will do what we need. WinMerge has been the latest attempt... The problem is simple. One Word doc...one PDF with a portion of it containing the text to be compared against. Compare them and be done. Raw text, ignore whitespace, ignore carriage returns, etc... Just compare the text and give me the results in some sort of report. NOTE: Have tried ExamDiff, kdiff3, Tortoise, and a few others...

• configuring USB modem( Huawei EC156) in ubuntu 13.10

  I am facing difficulty in installing my USB modem in Ubuntu 13.10. Contrary to what many have suggested,it does not get detected automatically, nor does setting a new connection help. USB Device is listed in lsusb, but not under network manager or Devices, it is detected as a CD-ROM, what I understood from the web was that usb-modeswitch can be used to switch it to a USB device. Even 'Enable Mobile Broadband' option is not shown in network manager. What was interesting is when I start laptop with windows 7 and use the USB modem and after that restart with Ubuntu, both Enable Broadband and the mobile broadband connection can be seen. Sadly, internet connection could not be installed. I tried using USB-modeswitch command as suggested somewhere, but it does not seem to work. Following is the message. • Remove Live ID authentication from user account

  I've just run in to a really annoying issue with Windows 8.1 - it seems I cannot remove the need to use Live ID credentials from an account without completely deleting that account. I know the process to do it - use the Disconnect link from the Accounts-Your account screen. The trouble comes when you get to the Switch to a local account screen, it will not let you enter the current account for the user name, instead you must enter a new one thus creating a new user account. Can I revert back to using just a local login without having to recreate the account? It seems quite retarded that I have to recreate the account, as deep down the only change required is which credential provider is used to authenticate the login. (Note that this Live ID linkage was created by using the Windows Store, not as a result of an upgrade from 8 to 8.1).

• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. The sessions were as follows: Overview of news in Visual Studio and Team Foundation server 2010 Ensuring Quality with VS/TFS 2010 Releasing products with VS/TFS 2010 No More No Repro with VS/TFS 2010 Performance Testing and Parallel Programming with VS/TFS 2010 Migrating to VS/TFS 2010 Tips, tricks, news and some best practices with VS/TFS 2010   In the coming days, I will post up examples from the demos too, with explanations of how they are intended to work. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. • Algorithm to infer tag hierarchy

  I'm looking for an algorithm to infer a hierarchy from a set of tagged items. E.g. if the following items have the tags: 1 a 2 a,b 3 a,c 4 a,c,e 5 a,b 6 a,c 7 d 8 d,f Then I can construct an undirected graph (or graphs) by tallying the node weights and edge weights: node weights edge weights a 6 a-b 2 b 2 a-c 3 c 3 c-e 1 d 2 a-e 1 <-- this edge is parallel to a-c and c-e and not wanted e 1 d-f 1 f 1 The first problem is how to drop any redundant edges to get to the simplified graph? Note that it's only appropriate to remove that redundant a-e edge in this case because something is tagged as a-c-e, if that wasn't the case and the tag was a-e, that edge would have to remain. I suspect that means the removal of edges can only happen during the construction of the graph, not after everything has been tallied up. What I'd then like to do is identify the direction of the edges to create a directed graph (or graphs) and pick out root nodes to hopefully create a tree (or trees): trees a d // \\ | b c f \ e It seems like it could be a string algorithm - longest common subsequences/prefixes - or a tree/graph algorithm, but I am a little stuck since I don't know the correct terminology to search for it.

• Reverse bash console text flow

  Hi, This is a bit of a weird question and I'm not sure that there is any easy answer to it but I am very interested in finding a solution. So when I work on a linux machine via a console I find that I am constantly staring at the bottom of the screen, as once you have executed a bunch of commands text fills toward the bottom. Now I find that this is decidedly not good for my neck and it would be far better if instead of scrolling to the bottom, the text would scroll to the top instead. So does anyone out there know if there is a way to reverse the direction text appears in a console? • Ad-hoc String Manipulation With Visual Studio

  Visual studio supports relatively advanced string manipulation via the ‘Quick Replace’ dialog. Today I had a requirement to modify some html, replacing line breaks with unordered list items. For example, I need to convert: Infrastructure<br/> Energy<br/> Industrial development<br/> Urban growth<br/> Water<br/> Food security<br/> to: <li>Infrastructure</li> <li>Energy</li> <li>Industrial development</li> <li>Urban growth</li> <li>Water</li> <li>Food security</li> This cannot be done with a simple search-and-replace but it can be done using the Quick Replace regular expression support. To use regular expressions expand ‘Find Options’, check ‘Use:’ and select ‘Regular Expressions’ Typically, Visual Studio regular expressions use a different syntax to every other regular expression engine. We need to use a capturing group to grab the text of each line so that it can be included in the replacement. The syntax for a capturing group is to replace the part of the expression to be captured with { and }. So my regular expression: {.*}\<br/\> means capture all the characters before <br/>. Note that < and > have to be escaped with \. In the replacement expression we can use \1 to insert the previously captured text. If the search expression had a second capturing group then its text would be available in \2 and so on. Visual Studio’s quick replace feature can be scoped to a selection, the current document, all open documents or every document in the current solution.

• HP Rapid Deployment - Change Data Store Path

  I am running HP Rapid Deployment (Altiris eXpress Deployment Server 6.9 - Build 164) on an inherited Windows Server 2003 SP2. I need to change the Data Store Path as the default is pointing to the C: drive and there is not enough space there. I would like to set it to the D: drive where there is plenty of space. Reading the documentation: Data store path: Specifies the path to stored packages and files and other DS functions (such as license verification). The default path is C:\Program files\Altiris\express\Deployment Server. Note: Do not use this setting to change the path to the Deployment Share. Modifying this setting does not automatically allow you to use another shared directory other than the express share. To change the Deployment Share shared directory, run a Custom install to establish another location for the Deployment Share. Is there any other way I can change the path as I do not have the install media?

• Character creation using spritesheets

  I am currently creating a 2D fighting game and have implemented a system where upon starting a new game, the player is presented with the option to create a custom character. I have a set of string arrays set with values that correspond to hair, headgear, chest, lower body and shoes. When done selecting a variety of items from the lists, a code is generated based off the index of each item (i.e 01123), which is then used to assign the correct Spritesheet to the player character. This has already presented a lot of work as I have had to create quite a few spreadsheets based of possible combinations, but I am now looking at a massive amount of work to implement each variation. I have started to look into setting layers for each item to reduce workload, but I am also looking at having different stances for the character - Depending on the currently equipped weapon - so this may present a lot of work either way. My question is, do I have any alternatives or am I stuck creating masses of Spritesheets to cover all combinations? As a side note, how much impact will assigning layered items have on overall performance?

• How to set up wireless access on a Cisco router

  Hi, I've set up my 877W according to the configuration listed in this forum post: IPTV over Cisco 877 (It's the working configuration at the bottom of the post) Note that I have an 877W, so it also has a wireless radio. Now, I've gotten the whole setup to work, so IPTV is working, and I can access the internet via the ethernet ports. Now I'm trying to figure out how to allow access via the dot11radio interface. I've gathered that I basically need to create a bridge group, and bridge the radio to the internet VLAN. However, when I add a bridge-group 2 command to VLAN1, it seems to take down the whole internet VLAN. (The IPTV continues to work.) This makes the router itself inaccessible (I've got a laptop, so no serial) and I end up having to reboot the router. Can anyone tell me how to a) Allow wireless access to the internet (preferably with WEP, to match my old router) b) Determine what makes the router inaccessible when I add the new bridge group c) Forward the IPTV traffic onto a machine on my internet VLAN

• Managing Kindle Fire with on 12.04 via Micro-USB

  To begin, I have read both Is there a way to get a Kindle Fire to work with 12.04? and How can I transfer files to a Kindle Fire with a Micro-USB cable? My problem is that I am unable to mount my Kindle Fire in order to add books to it. I have installed calibre, but it is unable to manage any devices until the computer itself has recognized it. The latter post had an excellent answer (provided by @jeremiah) that was making some progress. Unfortunately, I think I don't know enough about the -t flag used with mount. This is what I've done... Ran dmesg to locate the device: [ 3.920886] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk Confirmed it's location: $ sudo ls -l /dev/disk/by-id lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 18 15:52 usb-Amazon_Kindle_3C6C002600000001-0:0 -> ../../sdb So we know that my Kindle is recognized on /dev/sdb. I then used the mount command suggested by @jeremiah: $ sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb/ /mnt/kindle/ mount: no medium found on /dev/sdb The same error occurs for sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt/kindle. Note: I have created the 'kindle' directory in 'mnt' Any suggestions?

• How to prepare WiFi for an on-stage demo?

  Today at WWDC, Steve Jobs gave his keynote and ended up having a failure on-stage when connecting to WiFi. Google had a similar issue a few weeks ago in the same conference center. Note that the network will be closed, and will not require internet access. What steps can I take to prevent interference from existing WiFi, Bluetooth, etc? How can I best prevent curious/malicious people from trying to intrude on my WiFi network? I am open to recommendations on specific models of routers.

• Why is IIS 7.5 flushing file cache very often?

  We're running a Win 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 for serving image files. It's only used for static content, and file caching has been set up to cache files for 10 minutes. However the IIS frequently completely flushes the cache (seen by using Perfmon) It's not application pool recycling, it's not because the TTL has expired, so now I'm at a loss :-( I've included a screenshot of the perfmon graph where you can clearly see the issue. Is there anywhere I can see WHY it's doing these flushes ? (Note: I'm aware I could maybe detect it by attaching a debugger to the process, but that's not an option because it's a production server, and it cannot handle the slowdown a debugger would cause)

• Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • Can I grant permissions on files in windows 7 using a security identifier from another machine

  I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup). Existing certification holders should note that these retirements suspend the delivery of any further exams, but do not affect your certification. If you currently hold a certification earned by one of these exams, your credential remains fully valid.   We are happy to announce that AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is now available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.   AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is a minor release within the 20.2 product family that is specifically targeted for users of Agile PLM 9. AutoVue 20.2.2 brings a number of improvements, including support for SolidWorks 2013, AutoCAD and Inventor 2014, SolidEdge ST5, and Cadence Allegro 16.6.   It also includes support for Adobe Illustrator CS4 and up.   Another improvement involves bringing our support for Oracle Linux and Java Virtual Machine versions in-line with Agile's support. • Excel removing leading leading zeros when displaying CSV data

  I have a CSV text file with the following content: "Col1","Col2" "01",A "2",B "10", C When I open it up with Excel, it displays as shown here: Note that Cell 2A attempts to display "01" as a number without a leading 0. When I format rows 2 through 4 as "Text", it changes the display to ...but still the leading "0" is gone. Is there a way to open up a CSV file in XLS and be able to see all of the leading zeros in the file by flipping some option? I do not want to have to retype '01 in every cell that should have a leading zero. Furthermore, using a leading apostrophe necessitates that the changes be saved to a XLS format when CSV is desired. My goal is simply to use Excel to view the actual content of the file as text without Excel trying to do me any formatting favors.

• Screen flickers after resuming from hibernate with Intel GMA 3600 (Acer D270 with Intel N2600)

  Fresh system install, with correct display driver from Intel (8.14.8.1065). Clicking "Update driver" merely results in a message saying the driver was already up-to-date. After resuming from hibernate the entire screen flickers. This is especially noticeable while using IE9 (which has hardware acceleration enabled by default) on Google maps, in particular while typing in an address in the map search field (the flickering is much worse under these circumstances). Note that sleep worked fine, only hibernate causes this issue. Restarting "fixes" the problem temporarily until the next hibernate-resume. Aero is enabled. This is on Windows 7 (Pro) 32-bit, on an Acer Aspire One D270-1998, with the Intel N2600 (which has the Intel GMA 3600 built-in).

• Why FreeBSD won't reboot after kernel crash?

  Once in a while I get my server running FreeBSD 8.0 amd64 fail due to bad memory (incompatible with motherboard) modules. Each time it happens, the box stalls with the last note saying that it will automatically reboot in 15 second, but it never does. How do I fix this? I need computer to reboot after kernel crash, unattended. (Please do not recommend to replace memory, as soon as I get the modules, I will, but I need a quicker solution that will not require me to stand still next to the box just to press the reset button each time it crashes.)
